No, you can't connect an external drive to the iPad - the iPad doesn't have a USB or firewire port and the camera connection kit only supports the transfer of photos and videos into the Photos app. There are some wifi-enabled drives that can be used to stream content to the iPad e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite

E4200 No Longer Sees My Iomega 1TB External Hard Drive
Hello - I had an Iomega 1TB External Hard Drive connected to my E4200 router. I had shares confgured and they were properly running on the network.
As of yesterday, this all stopped working. The router does not see the drive; it is as though it is not plugged in.
I rebooted the router and it still does not work. I've connected the hard drive directly to my PC to verify that it works there, and it does.
The router is running Ver.1.0.03 (Build 14) of firmware (the latest).
Any suggestions?

I have tried your suggestion of trying another disk. I had an old Maxtor drive that I connected to the router; it works fine!!!
I've since done a chkdsk on my TB drive, and it checked out clean.
I'm guessing here - it appears that the 1TB drive is not identifying itself to the router's satisfaction, but it is OK for Windows XP. What's odd is that this all worked a week ago. The only thing I can think of is that we had some power outages during a recent storm that messed something up (which shouldn't be the case since it is all connected through a decent surge protector).
Any other ideas are appreciated.

I have all my movies on an external hard drive. I want to be able to access them without copying everything to my iTunes. How can I do this?
I think DebinSC might mean using the movies without copying to the iTunes library?
Maybe the solution is to uncheck this box?

i have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?
Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

Hard drive was recognized by my HP Laptop w/ Windows Vista. Replaced it with Pavilion Desktop w/Windows 7 (64 bit).

Have you been able to test any other devices in the ports on the desktop you are trying to using with Iomega? Example, have you tried using a regular usb flash drive or another external hard drive to see if the computer recognizes the device in the same port?

Recording to external hard drives - Firewire 800 problems
Ok so i did post a similar thread on this in the "mac mini" part of the website so im very sorry for double posting but I thought since this problems pertains mostly to recording and specifically recording on garageband, that I would try posting here as well. Heres my deal:
I am a musician working with garageband and I have always been recording to my internal drive until recently. I was unaware until I read some posts here from the good people like you guys, that that is not a good idea to record to your internal drive. So, I got an external firewire 800 drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DGZ05A) and this cable (http://www.amazon.com/2M-Firewire-800-9PIN-Cable/dp/B000XQILWK/ref=pdbxgy_e_imgb). When I received it, I first used disk utility and reformatted it for Mac OS Extended Journaled. Then I proceeded to move a couple sample libraries and my entire "Garageband" folder (with my saved songs in it) to the external. I instantly knew something was wrong. The files were taking forever to get written over. It took about 15 mins for a 5GB folder to be moved over. I was already discouraged. Anyway, I plugged in the USB cable that came with the external (the drive has hook ups for both USB 2 and firewire 400/800) and tried moving the same files and it was MUCH faster. The same 5GB file was moved over in a matter of minutes.
I then tried recording to the drive (using firewire again) and it would hardly even PLAY the song without stopping every couple seconds (too many effects error, and yes ALL the tracks were locked). Tried to record as well and i'd get even less time before garageband would stop the song with the same error. So I disconnected firewire and went USB. Thru USB the song didnt stop once, not on playback OR recording. Then I moved the songs back to my internal and played them (and recorded) with no problem either.
I ran a couple tests on the drive using AJA system test and came back with these results:
Basic test of read/write speed using firewire 800:
write - 14/mb sec
read - 21/mb sec
then, using usb 2.0
write - 18/mb sec
read - 37/mb sec
both these connections seemed to be running slower then they should ..but at least the USB connection would actually let me play a song and record to it without stopping
I manually copied over a 2.04GB file and via firewire 800 connection it took 2 mins and 20 secs. Via the USB 2 connection it was 55 seconds! ..also, while i transfered the files i noticed that the USB transfer was nice and steady with tiny increments of the file being transferred. Firewire, however, was speedy then slow, speedy then slow. Very inconsistant transfer speed throughout the process. kind of choppy
So what gives? I cant figure out if I'm doing something wrong, or if my external HD is bad? Or the cable is bad? Or maybe the firewire port on my mac mini is bad (i've never used it before for anything other than this external drive). Or i'm thinking maybe my processor isnt strong/fast enough to record to the external firewire drive? Im working with a mac mini 120GB internal HD and the 2ghz intel core 2 duo with only 2GB ram (i know thats not ideal for recording and im planning to upgrade at some point, but i have been recording to the internal just fine with the RAM i have now and never had a problem until trying to record to the firewire drive). I was going to go out today and get a new cable and see if that was the cause of it. Anyway sorry for the book-length post! But PLEASE SOMEBODY help me here! ..as i said, im not very computer literate and only just started producing music using computers so please use dummy terms lol ..thanks in advanceStrictly my opinion, and more than happy to be educated with facts and convinced otherwise... but, there are no dangers.
Bottom line is this... does your specific computer setup encounter ANY problems during recording or editing with your chosen software and current workflow? If not, then there is nothing wrong. Simple as that. Further, if you are having problems, then its more than likely dealt with by upgrading RAM amount and internal HDD speed and size. If you have a slightly older machine that is pre FW800, you will find by bench marking your HDD's that an upgraded internal system HDD will significantly outperform any external HDD read/write spec's. Even with FW800, comparing apples with apples, your system HDD will more than likely have better spec's. Please however, do not take my word for this, but try it out for yourself. Make sure you have facts about your own system rather than believing my claims or anyone else's claims. I used Intech's Quickbench http://www.speedtools.com/QuickBench.html to get some facts about my machine.
There will be an argument made that you will be putting strain on your hard drive by recording to the system drive because it not only has to deal with this function but also with other functions related to your audio programs and OS. Apparently you may be working it on the 'hard' side and shorten its life span. Probably technically correct but practically speaking you will more than likely never even notice any such strain. If you are worried about a system HDD crash or death because you are working it too hard then the answer to this is a well planned back up regime. You should have one anyway, regardless of setup. -
My Mac Can't See Files on External Hard Drive

I'm having some trouble with my iMac today. It can't see any files on my NTFS External Hard Drive after a sharing change, I'm using Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX v8.0.0.
Yesterday evening I tried to share the drive over my network by clicking System Preferences / Sharing / File Sharing and then adding the drive as a shared folder. It is since doing this that I cannot see my files on this external HD. I have a second NTFS HD here which I connected and I can see the files on that drive so I don't think it's a software issue.
I have tried a few things to try and fix it but to no avail.
1. I have tried removing it from the shared folder list but that hasn't solved the problem. I tried adding it a second time just in case but that didn't do anything either.
2. I have repaired the disk permissions via disk utility
3. I have tried "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder" to show hidden files but they still don't appear. I have reversed this so hidden files are no longer visible.
If I connect the drive to my Windows 7 laptop I can see and access all of the files.
I hope someone can help out with this issue. If you need any other information just let me know.

Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX v8.0.0I had the same problem but only after I upgraded to Lion. I could see the files on my external drive on other Macs using older software. It seems that Lion wasn't seeing old files on the external drive. So we accessed the files on a Mac using Snow Leopard, copied all the files into one new folder on the same external hard drive and now they're there on Lion. Problem solved! I hope this helps

I have a tricky request from one of my customers : they would like to block any external hard drives (firewire and USB) from mounting on the Desktop, BUT would like to allow USB keys only.
All the clients are unmanaged (local accounts, NOT bound to an Open Directory Master server) and are running OS X 10.4.8 (Intel).
I found the easy way to prevent any Firewire device to show up.
I also found how to disable all USB devices (except for keyboard/mouse) : renaming /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext
Problem is, this method won't make any difference between a hard drive and a key, it will block it, period.
Is there any way to allow some (or all) USB keys only to mount ? My only guess would be to unload some extensions which are listed by the "kextstat" command.
That could only be possible if USB keys and USB hard drives don't use the same kind/brand of controller/bridge and therefore don't use the same kernel extension.
Does anyone have a clue on this ?

There aren't any 3rd party apps or anything. I use PC's and Mac's at school and the only computer connected to a printer at my house is a PC so i need access to both

You may see one folder in there and that's the one you want. If you see more than one, look for the one with the most recently modified files. -

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots. -
I want to use my 1TB Seagate Hard drive for time machine and transferring files from Mac to PC.
For about a year I've been using my 1TB external hard drive for only time machine. To be honest, it wasn't until today that I tried to connect my hard drive to a PC and realize it isn't compatible. I read about partitioning the hard drive so that it can work both for time machine and transferring files between pc and mac. In order to read and write in the external disk on the PC, you have to select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". If you choose any other option, the PC won't be able to read your external disk. Apart from that, note that you can't use files bigger than 4 GB with FAT. If you want to use the external disk with files bigger than 4 GB, you have to format your new partition in exFAT, and you have to do it on a PC -
Having downloaded Mavericks to my IMac two weeks ago, I now find Time Machine couldn't back up to the Time Machine HDD. I am using a WD 1TB External Hard drive. I understand that a number of people have lost data since installing Mavericks on their Western Digital external drives. Has anyone any futher info.
