Not as a cellular phone. There are apps that allow you to use the internet for phone calls... VOIP apps. Skype is one.

Though it's important to understand that this is NOT cellular calling. The SIM in the iPad remains usable ONLY for data connectivity. There is still no voice or text capability through the operator network. -

Yes, if you get an iPad 2 AT&T model or a new iPad. Be aware that the new iPad may not use the same frequency for LTE that is used is parts of Europe.

Yes, our domain and email accounts are on a server that does accept IMAP. Also, our mac mini and imacs are all set up for IMAP. Buying an ipad will enable me to work from home during this winter.
Another ?: do you know if you can use text edit with the iPads mail feature? Reason being we have about 100 generic emails that all we have to do is change a few fields before sending out. Can this be integrated in without having to recreate all these messages?

I have recently begun to use Pages and want to transfer a document between the iPad and my PC. I can transfer to the iPad, but not the other way, and am told I do not have sufficient 'privileges'. What does this mean? Also I can't use iCloud with Pages between the iPad and PC, although I purchased extra storage in order to do this.
If you have a PC, you don't have Pages on it. You can transfer Pages presentations to/from iCloud via http://www.icloud.com , however -- you just won't have an app on your PC to deal with Pages documents. Make sure that you have your iCloud account properly configured on your iPad.
