Can I use Leopard Server for a few things without a static IP/DNS mapping?

Caveat: I'm pretty capable at setting up and running macs, but not a crack server admin or anything like that. I don't write code and my eyes start to glaze over when you start talking about Kerbos and the like...
Question: I'd like to use Leopard server for a few things on my local network - with some vpn access to the same services:
- iCal server (the most important feature) for 3 users
- File server services for Time Machine (yes, base Leopard can do this)
- vpn access into the iCal server for one user
Do I have to go through the headache of switching over from a dynamic IP to a static IP, setting up DNS mapping, etc? Or is there a simpler way?
Any help appreciated. Thanks

  • HT201371 Can I use touch id for iTunes Store purchases without having a phone passcode turned on?

I really don't want a passcode but I love not having to enter my complex password on the small keyboard.  Why does this option have to be linked to a passcode?  Doesn't make a lot of sense.

    From the article:
You can set up Touch ID in iOS Setup Assistant or by tapping Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. To set up Touch ID, you must first set a passcode. Touch ID is designed to minimize the input of your passcode, but you need a passcode for additional security validation, such as enrolling new fingerprints.
So yes, that's how it's designed. You must have a passcode, though as long as you understand the caveats:
In addition, you will need to enter your passcode to unlock your iPhone in these conditions:
    After restarting your iPhone 5s
When more than 48 hours have elapsed from the last time you unlocked your iPhone 5s
To enter the Touch ID & Passcode setting
    and
You can't use Touch ID for purchases if Require Password in Settings > General > Restrictions is set to Immediately.
you should be able to use Touch ID without needing your passcode. If none of those circumstances is true and you're still being asked for your passcode to make a purchase from the iTunes Store, it would seem that something is amiss with your iPhone.

  • Can i use JEE server for my Android app?

    Hello,
Let me introduce myself,i am Mohith K M from India,Student and beginner in JEE
I am doing a project,Which is combination of Android application,Server and Desktop app (developed in Visual C# )
I am comfortable with Android app side,
Bt, i dont have an idea About j2ee Server side?
    Where should i start studying
What protocol should i use? SOAP?
Wat my project exactly do is
There are many Desktop application (devlpd in visual C#),These app will have database, and these is to be updated to Database @ server side, (MYSQL??)
and Android application will request with some query to J2ee Server; Now J2ee Server have to respond back, after applying some bussiness logic in b'wn
Please help me out,Where should i Start!
    I was planing to use Glassfish server,j2ee;

    You learn the same things as you would learn for any JEE application;
    - learn about EJBs (3.0 standard, not the earlier iterations!)
    - learn JPA (optionally, low level JDBC can also work fine)
    - learn about EJB webservices (and it might not hurt to learn about SOAP in general)
You shouldn't need a web interface as this is all server side, so you don't need to go into JSF or any other web framework. For your purposes, I can recommend the book "Enterprise Javabeans 3.0" by O'Reilly. It will teach you all you need to know. If you want to learn about JPA, I can highly recommend the book "Pro EJB 3: Java Persistence API" by APress.

  • Can I use Leopard Server with Samba instead of Windows Box?

I need to add an admin setup to a clients studio, basically to run a separate network with 4 win XP 32bit clients and a basic file sharing server that has roaming profiles.
So my question is would a Mac Pro with 10.5 server running as a PDC via SMB be OK?
I would much prefer to stay in the OS X world and seeing as its a basic setup it should be fine?
I have read about serious issues with 10.5 and SMB on 64Bit clients (which we will not be using)
Any tips etc really would be much appreciated

Yes, CIFS/SMB services do generally work fine. (Some folks have had some problems here, yes.)
There are various wrinkles with Vista NLTM authentication that are discussed around the forums.
Providing Open Directory (the Mac OS X Server analog to Microsoft Active Directory) is more involved than providing disk services.
You're going to want to read file and disk services and Open Directory materials in the manual set as a start.
And if you're headed down this path, first get RAID configured and working, then get DNS working, DHCP and related, and then get OD working, and then add CIFS / SMB services and other such. Order how you install and configure your services here, as there are dependencies on what (other) services are available.

    Hi
Each time when you start your computer, you need to restart Oracle as well, its only with Windows XP. The process you have to follow each time is:
Start -->Run and then type CMD to open command prompt.
    In command prompt type
    svrmgrl and then press
    connect internal/oracle and then press
    startup force and then press
If you have any problem, then please email me, [email protected]

I agree load balancing part but load balancing should be done in context of subscribing and not in terms of publishing. You can do failover in context of publishing using Multi-point publish.
If you publish directly to origin and then introduce edge servers for subscribing do you still face issue.
I mean if you set up your linux VPS as edge and then subscriber goes through that edge - say like rtmp://linuxedge/?rtmp://origin/live - does this work?
Can you try that out and let me know.

  • Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to use it?

Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to have it work right?

Netboot and Software Update, at its simplest.  Mac OS X Server also expects to have functional IP networking and DNS services (somewhere) on the LAN (and if you're behind a NAT gateway, then the DNS server(s) are on your LAN and not out at your ISP), or things get weird.  SUS (usually) works out of the box, outside of cases where there's an outbound firewall.  Netboot can be more effort to setup, in terms of what you're loading into the clients.

  • Setting up a leopard server for the first time in live office environment

    Hi
After a lot of reading and testing in a small LAN setup, Im going to install and setup leopard server in a small business, with max 10 employees.
Any hints on what I should expect? Any advice on most clever approach?
In the Server Administration Document there is a sample setup in chapter 9. I plan on following this, but will the employess(clients) be able to access the Internet while installation is in progress?
    Any advice is appreciated.

I have to use the servers IP address when accessing iCal or wiki or any other service I guess.
I'm not sure what to do to get leopard.mydomain.com to work in my setup. We have a hosting firm to host our mail and web and they control the dns. Do I contact them to add a record for leopard.mydomain.com?
First (and in general) I'd only use and have publicly-registered domain names here.
I'd avoid use any domains that I didn't have registered.
If you have public static IP addresses for your server(s), then I'd suggest deferring all public-facing DNS services and registrations to your ISP or hosting provider, and to your ISP's DNS servers. Your ISP or hosting provider (specifically for mail or public-facing services) would set the mail MX record and any DNS translation for the public static IP address of your Leopard server box.
If you are using private addresses inside a NAT perimeter (which doesn't work for public-facing service such as mail or non-VPN access to blogs and wikis and such), then you can use Leopard Server or (preferably) Snow Leopard Server DNS to serve up local addresses inside your perimeter, and the "local" DNS server can then forward requests for all zones that it is not authoritative for out to your ISP's DNS servers. You probably don't want to be running "public" DNS until you've a better handle on how DNS works; start with a "local" server and learn.

  • Can I use Wiki Server with a custom build of Apache?

Hi there. For various reasons, I may need to roll my own build of Apache, PHP, and some other web technologies. What I'm hoping to do is use Wiki Server for the collaborative part of our site, but I don't know if it can be set up to run with an Apache build other than the one that comes with Leopard.
Can this be done? If so, how?

That could work, I suppose. I take it it's not possible to configure the Wiki Server to work with a different build of Apache?
I'd just as soon not run two Apache instances on our new system; that's what we're doing now, on our Tiger server, and it's a bit inconvenient to have two sets of web configuration settings to worry about.
If possible, I'd like to use the Wiki server with a custom Apache build. (I need to rebuild PHP, you see...)

  • Snow Leopard server for 10.7 netboot image

    Hi Everyone,
I am trying to create a netboot image of 10.7 using snow leopard server but it is not working. I have already created an image of Lion and then tranfered it over to my server (Snow Leopard). I have scanned the image for restore (not sure if this is needed) and then mounted it using Disk Utility. Now when I lauch SIU then i don't see my pre-created image as image source.
Can i create netboot image of 10.7 using Snow Leopard?
                                            OR
If I created the netboot image using Lion Server and then tranfer the files over to Snow Leopard Server for all my client. Can i do this?
    Thanks,

    Hi Brian,
    Thanks for your help.
So if I create the 10.7 netboot image using 10.7 server and then move the NetBootSP0 folder to SL server then it should be working, right?

  • Leopard or Leopard Server for simple file & print sharing?

    Hi,
Can anyone help? We have all Macs - 3 intel minis, 3 intel mac pros, 1 intel imac, 1 G4 imac, 1 mac book G4, 1 mac book intel, all are running Leopard 10.5.1. We would like for them to connect to our intel xserve to access it's 3 drives. We need to set-up 2 groups - a sales group consisting of 6 users with access to 1 main folder and it's sub-folders on 1 drive and a group for our production department consisting of 4 users with access to all 3 drives and all folders. We have os x leopard & os x leopard server. We can't seem to get either of them to work without a hitch. We installed Leopard 10.5 on the server and could set it up how we needed it on 2 of the drives (with permissions, etc.) however, the third drive when accessed all had folders with the dreaded red circle with a minus. We have exhausted our options....can anyone help? We would be very, very grateful as everything is down and we need to get it up and running ASAP! Thanks

An xserve is designed and is fully optimised to run server software so your best using leopard server.
There is a specific section in these boards for server issues.
However if you have setup your 3rd drive with the correct permissions in the server gui and they don't seem to work then you could try using the terminal to fix the issue.
open your terminal and issue the command
    sudo chown -R owner:group /Volumes/third_drive
replace the owner:group with the respective owner and group name and replace the volume name of third_drive with the actual volume name.
Then if you issue the command
    sudo chmod -R 770 /Volumes/third_drive
this will give the owner and group full read/write permission but will give guests know access.

  • DNS/web-server hosted off-site. How to set up Leopard server for mail?

    Hey Everyone,
Brand new xserve with leopard server 10.5.2. Currently, Our web and DNS server for our domain,"company.com" is co-located off-site with an MX record of "mail.company.com" pointed at the static IP of the office where our mail server is. I want to replace the mail server with the xserve. With that in mind, how do I configure the DNS on the xserve during initial configuration to reflect that? Give it a self-referencing FQDN like server.company.office and see if the mail service can handle the domain hosted elsewhere?
I'm pretty new to servers and would love be able to keep this all in Standard but I'm not afraid to jump into Advanced if need be. I've created a test domain through GoDaddy of "company2.com" with an MX record of "mail.company2.com" pointing at the IP address of the xserve. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • HT4628 My iMac loses its connection with my home wi-fi network when it goes into "idle" mode.  That is, if I don't use the Mac for a few minutes, it goes to idle, kind of like sleep. The wi-fi connection disappears and the clock upper right stops working.

I think it's a Lion problem.  I had this problem with an old Dell True Mobile wireless router, and hoped it would go away with a new Airport Express router.  Same problem.  I checked online and saw a lot of message boards featuring questions from people that suffered the interruption of their wi-fi connection, some with Macbooks others with iMacs like me.  The problem happens when I don't use the computer for a few minutes. It goes into the Idle mode, kind of like sleep.  The connection is severed and the time clock upper right stops.  It's weird.  There was supposedly an Apple update that addressed this issue, so at the Genius bar two days ago I updated to 10.7.3, downloaded and installed the update. Didn't work.  Is it Lion? Is it a wireless card issue?  Very frustrating.  I subitted a genius bar work authorization with another Apple Genius Bar support tech the next day. He ran some tests. Cryptically said he knew that Apple knew about this and was working on a solution but couldn't tell me what it was. Submitted my info and said I'd be contacted by an Apple tech within 48 hours and provided with a link to another download of another update that should "fix" the problem.  I don't know what to do.

    I FINALLY SOLVED THIS ISSUE!!!!
New routers have "mixed" modes for your network; this means that it will automatically choose the best option between wireless-B, wireless-G and wireless-N network modes. I used to experience this issue using the 2.4 GHz. mixed mode wireless network.
Thankfully, my router can create 2 networks: a 2.4 GHz. network and a 5 GHz. network.
When I randomly changed this value to "use only wireless-B and wireless-G" trying to fix an issue with a wi-fi expander, the iMac wi-fi  issue dissapeared! I tried it with wireless-N only, but it didn't work.
So, finally, I have a 2.4 GHz network with only wireless-B and wireless-G modes which works PERFECT with the iMac, and a 5 GHz. network with a mixed* wireless mode for everything else mode.
*PD: by "mixed" mode it means that the router will automatically choose between B, G and N network modes as it fits better.
