Can I use Macbook Discs

Can I use the OS X 10.4 discs that came with my Macbook to install 10.4 on my PPC iMac 17" G4 (half a white basketball looking one)?

Hi there
No you cannot use the Macbook disks as they are machine specific disks. The disks that came with the Macbook are for that computer only which has an intel processor and your iMac 17" has a PowerPC processor.

  • I want to install a new hard drive on my 2008 MacBook but do not have the instillation discs that came with my computer.  Can I use instillation discs from a 2009 or 2010 MacBook?

I want to install a new hard drive on my 2008 MacBook but do not have the instillation discs that came with my computer.  Can I use instillation discs from a 2009 or 2010 MacBook?  The hard drive I am planning to install is a WD Scorpio Black 500GB SATA 2.5'' internal hard drive.

Sometimes they do work - i've done it before.  I have a late 2008 Macbook Uni and used the install dvd of my 2009 Macbook White and it worked.
Why not just clone your hard drive?  It'll save you a lot of time doing a clone rather than doing a clean install.
Unless you're having issues with your old set up or  your old hard drive is dead.
You can download Carbon Copy Cloner - install your new hard drive in a external usb enclosure (around $10) and clone fromt here then test it before you install it in your Macbook.
Once you've done the swap, you can install your old hard drive in the USB enclosure and use it as a backup drive.
    Good luck

  • I own PSE 10 installed on my MacBook Pro.  Can I use the disc to install it on new iMac?

Have PSE 10 installed on my MacBook Pro.  Can I use the discs to install it on my new iMac?  also considering PSE 11 and Lightroom 4. Comments?

Yes you can install it on your new Macintosh.  If it does not have an optical drive then you can copy the contents of the installation media to a USB drive and then install the software from there.

  • Can I use OS discs acquired with my latest Mac hardware on older Mac hardwa

In our household, I have a Cube 450 Mhz running a very early version of Mac OS X and I have an iMac 2Ghz Intel Core Due running OS 10.4.11. (I'm also running my employer's MacBook which has 10.5.6 on it). It's time to replace the Cube (much as I love it) and we will likly replace it with a Mini. The Mini will come pre-installed with the latest Mac OS and iLife apps. Can I use the discs that will come with my new Mini to upgrade the OS and iLife apps on my iMac? Or am I going to have to purchase some additional licenses?

Can I use the discs that will come with my new Mini to upgrade the OS and iLife apps on my iMac?
    No.
am I going to have to purchase some additional licenses?
Yes. The Mac Box Set is cheaper than purchasing Mac OS X and iLife separately, and it also includes iWork.

  • Can I use MacBook Pro install disc for boot disk on Macbook 4,1?

    Hi,
I have a White MacBook 4,1 running OSX 10.5.8. I'm trying to clone my HD and ran into a filesystem error. Ran Disc Utility and had same errors. Now I need to run Disc Utility from Bootdisc but I can't find it. I do however have my newer DVD from my 13" MBP with 10.6.7. Can I use this to boot from and run disc utility to fix error?
    If not, any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Frank

It might work but it's risky. The MBP installation disks may well not contain the right drivers for the MacBook. It would be better, if at all possible, if you contacted Apple tech support and asked for a new set of disks for your MacBook. They'll send you a set for a reasonable fee. If you can't wait, perhaps there's an Apple Store or other Apple dealer near you that would have a set you could borrow in-store to do the reinstallation.

  • Macbook late 2007 can't use remote disc

Snow Leopard retail disc won't load so I'm trying to do remote install.  I can see remote disc under devices but when I Boot with option key pressed there is no option for the remote disc to boot to.  I'm connected via ethernet to a windows 7 computer with the remote disc app installed and running.  Please help.

    Hello MacDoode,
It sounds like you are trying to boot to a Mac OS X install disc in a Windows computer with Remote Disc set up. According to the following article this is not a supported function of the feature:
DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287?viewlocale=en_US
Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:
Install discs for an operating system such as Microsoft Windows (for use with Boot Camp), or Mac OS X.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Can I use SnowLeopard discs from my MBP to install on old MB ??? Y / N ???

    Hello,
This is simply a question of permissions: Assuming Snow Leopard is compatible with my old MB (2gb mem., 2ghz Intel Core Duo, 80gb HD), can I take the discs that just came with my new MacBook Pro and use them to install Snow Leopard on my old machine (Currently Running 10.4.11 Tiger)? Is that allowable or is it a big NO NO from APPLE's point of view (i.e. am I supposed to buy a separate copy, or do I now own what I've got on one machine outright-enough to install on a second?)...
    Answers appreciated.
    Cheers,
    DB.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, it is a no-no from a license standpoint, as it is only a single-user license.
Also, be aware that disks that ship with your computer are hardware specific and should not be used to try to install on different hardware.

  • Can I use install discs (Snow Leopard) from MBPro to upgrade desktop?

I'm having issues with my iMac (mid 2007) which has been upgraded to Leopard so far (when Leopard came out). I have Snow Leopard discs that came with my Mac Book Pro. If I do a clean install of my iMac, can I use the Snow Leopard discs to do the new install? What worries me is that the discs specifically say "13 inch MacBook Pro" Mac OSX Install DVD. Does this mean I can't use them on my desktop? Are their install discs specifically for laptops vs desktops?

You can not use the disks intended for the MBP on your iMac. Buy a retail copy of SL ($29) or contact Apple for a replacement of the original disks for the iMac.

  • Can I use macbook air for ios app development?

I would like to know if i can use macbook air for ios app development or macbook pro is only option?

Just to reinforce what shldr2thewheel says - be very sure what size memory you want if you get a Macbook Air. There is *no* way to change after purchase. My advice is to go for the 4GB option - especially if you want to do app development.
The internal storage (solid state drive) of the Air can be upgraded if required but it will probably be an expensive option. If you don't think the storage will be enough then maybe using a USB connected drive to hold non-essential files is an option.
As to deciding between the Air and Pro you are basically making a decision between portability (Air) and expandability/bigger screens (Pro). What is more important to you?

  • Can't use macbook after installing 10.7.5

Yesterday I upgraded to 10.7.5 and today I can't use my macbook pro.  It doesn't go past the start up screen.  I can't use the curser.  It's just sits there.  I forced it to restart and the same issue occurs.  Can someone please suggest what to do? I see others are having problems with the upgrade.

I booted from the Lion recovery partition (hold down option at startup), then did restore from Time Machine.  Took a whole day, as it erases the drive and then writes everything back over it again.  Thought about reinstalling Lion from scratch, but if it installs 10.7.5 again then I will probably end up with the same problem and it will take a long time to find out.  I am back on 10.7.4 now and everything is working fine.  Not sure what to do, I may eventually try an upgrade to Mountain Lion and skip 10.7.5.  This is the first time I have ever had a major problem with a system update.
I'm at a loss to figure out how to diagnose the problem, as the boot never gets far enough for me to access anything like console logs that might shed some light on what is going on.  But I have wasted two days on this already so for the moment I am going to give up and just stay with 10.7.4.

  • Can I use MacBook Leopard backup disk to install Leopard on my MacPro?

I have a MacPro desktop and was planning on upgrading to Leopard. I just bought a MacBook that came with a Leopard installation disk. Can I use this disk to install Leopard on my MacPro? I wasn't sure if it was designed to be used only for the MacBook if it crashed and needed to be wiped clean. I don't want to accidentally erase my MacPro.
    Thanks

no. those disks are hardware specific and will not work on the mac pro. it's also against ULA to do this. if you want to install leopard on the mac pro you need to buy a retail copy of leopard.

AppleCare is different for the Macs, so you can't use the MacBook Pro AppleCare in the MacBook Air because it won't be added

CCan I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but computer seems fine

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • Can I use Macbook OS X install disc on old iMac?

I just bought a used Intel iMac and have the OS X Leapord discs from my Macbook. The iMac has OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger). What would happen if I took the discs that came with my Macbook and put them in the iMac I just bought? Could I update to Leapord with now problems? I don't dare until I have talked to someone who knows more than me.
    iMac specs:
    OS X 10.4.11
2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Macbook specs:
    OS X 10.6.6
2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2.5 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Thank you!

Hi - if the disks that came with the Macbook are grey, they are the restore disks that are specific to your Macbook. To install Leopard/Snow Leopard on the used iMac you will need a full retail version of the the OS - a disk with a large X and a picture of large cat that bites on it.
