Can I use Migration Assistant to install Tiger on my old Mac?

I am about to buy a MacBook that will, of course, come with Tiger and I will use Migration Assistant to bring my files over from my Powermac G5 which has just Panther installed. Since I am keeping both machines, can I use Migration Assistant to migrate the Tiger OS over to my Powermac? And can I do the same with the newer versions of software that will come with the MacBook (iLife etc.)?
Dual 2GHz Powermac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The Migration Assistant can only transfer data to a computer which already has the Migration Assistant installed, and it will not transfer the whole Mac OS X setup in any configuration. Furthermore, the version of Mac OS X which comes with a MacBook is not compatible with your Power Mac G5. If you want Tiger on your older computer, you need to purchase a new copy.

  • I am trying to use migration assistant to transfer files from my old mac to a new mac book pro, I have the ethernet wire, but there is no ethernet point on my new mac pro, so how else can i do it?

You can do it wirelessly, but that will take some time... you could also purchase a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter or a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. That would certainly be faster. You should be able to purchase either adapter at your local Apple Store or at the online Apple Store.

  • Can I use migration assistant from a mac with leopard to a mac with tiger?

My old mac was upgraded to leopard, (don't ask me why), and I just got a new mac with tiger, although I ordered leopard up to date. Can I use migration assistant to move stuff from the old mac with leopard to the new mac with tiger, or do I have to wait until I get the copy of leopard? Plus, if I move files over now- like through email and/or network connection, and then when I get leopard and archive and install, what happens to my files?

That is correct. You'll need either an ethernet cable or a firwire cable and a firewire to thunderbolt adapter to connect the two macs together. Here's info on Migration/Setup assistant

  • Can I use Migration Assistant to Copy files from one mac to another, but not delete the original files off of the original Mac?

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro Retina, and I have an old Macbook Pro w/o Retina and wish to use migration assistant. I still want to use the older Macbook Pro and keep all the files on it, but copy them and also put them on my new Macbook. What I'm trying to say is, can I use migration assistant to move files to a new Mac, while keeping the files on the old computer?

You can omit some broad categories, but you can't pick and choose individual items.
See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion (preferred method), or the similar Using Migration Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the gory details.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

  • I used migration assistant to transfer files from my old compaq laptop to MBP but I have no idea where they are??

I used migration assistant to transfer files from my old compaq to Macbook pro but I don't know where to find all my pictures and music in the MBP. Where do they go?

I have now migrated my stuff again - I think the problem is that I clicked skip this user on previous attempts. Now I have 4 different users, one has my photos, one has my music and another has my documents as well as the one that is my usual one. I just need to figure out how to get the pics and music into the one I'm using day-to-day and I'll be sorted.

  • Will migration assistant delete my files on my old mac?

  • Can I use Migration Assistant as a tool to move my iphoto library back and forth from my imac to my MacBook Pro?

I purchased a macbook pro so I can work on my iphoto projects when out of the house. Instead of buying an external and having my iphoto library on that, would I be able to use Migration Assistant to update the iphoto library from macbook pro to imac and imac to macbook pro -- depending on which machine i am using at the time?

    Do this:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • How to recover Mail and Mail Downloads when you can't use Migration Assistant

I have a MacBook 2.4gHz that had a 750GB HD that crashed yesterday. Disk Utility said "This Hard Drive has failed, recover or backup what you can, then reformat." So, I removed the 750GB HD and replaced the original 160GB HD and reinstalled OS 10.7 on that Drive. I put the 750GB HD in an external case and hooked it up by USB (only available hookup with my external case). I can see all my content and tried to use Migration Assistant, but it hangs up at "preparing content to transfer." So, I decided I would have to drag all the old content onto my new user on the internal HD. I moved Movies, Pictures, Desktop, Documents, Music, and Downloads. However, I can't move any of the parts of the hidden User Library, primarily because I can't find or see it.
My question is how to access the User Library in a non-bootable (although having OS 10.7 installed) External HD. I've tried the ~/Library/ in Go>Go to Folder, but it goes to the running HD User folder, not the external. Can anyone tell me how to crack into this folder? I'd like to retrieve preferences, mailboxes, address book, etc.
I realize it could be lost, but literally everything else is still present. FYI: I plan to hang onto the 750 until the replacement HD arrives, so I can be reminded what Applications I had installed. There isn't room for all of those on the smaller HD.
    Thanks,
    Ronda

Update: I managed to get Migration Assistant to move something, but it didn't work out as I expected. Because I've already installed the OS and some applications that I need, as well as copying over most of the user files except the library, there wasn't much room left on the smaller disk. I purchased the firewire 9pin to 6pin cable that would allow me to use the firewire port on the external drive and selected the main user. There wasn't enough room to move all of the user, so I selected only the "Other Files" folder (about 2 GB), not all the items I had already copied. I set that to install last night at 9:32pm. At 4:00am it said there was still 10 hrs and 29 minutes to go. My husband checked it at 6:45am and it said 19 more minutes. When he arrived home at 4:30pm, it was finished. When I arrived home and logged out of the administrator and in to the main user, immediately it showed my desktop with all the folders that I had placed in the sidebar of the Finder window and everything looked exactly like it had on Monday before the crash, then the beachball started spinning and when it finally came up for air, all those folders were gone, my dock appearance was gone and everything was back to the bland new user settings that Mac OS starts with.
My mail file did get moved over with its thousands of messages, but not mail uploads nor the desktop appearance settings and it doesn't appear that any other settings have migrated either. It's difficult to tell, since I can't install my applications on the smaller drive.
The replacement drive from WD arrived, but it is a 2TB "upgrade" and it doesn't even fit in my MacBook, so I have to send that back and wait longer.
I'm still trying to recover my appearance, and combine the various users into one. If anyone has suggestions on how to get the mail uploads folder, preferences, etc. I'd love to hear them.

  • Can you use migration assistant between 10.4 and 10.8

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications and files from a G5 imac running 10.4.11 to a brand new iMac i5 on 10.8.2. Have connected through ethernet cable but machines don't recognise each other!
Is this an OS problem or a PowerPC vs Intel issue?

Be careful about trying to migrate applications from a G5 to an Intel mac running Mt. Lion (10.8.x).  They may not work.  Rosetta is no longer supported, so older applications that ran on your G5 may not run at all on your new iMac.  And even some 'universal' apps that ran on 10.4 (Tiger) will not run well if at all on Mt. Lion.
It would be best if you install current versions of the applications you are interested in, from scrtach, instead of migrating what are now very old versions.

  • Can You Use Migration Assistant to Just Get Files and NOT the Username?

Im wondering this because i don't want to tamper with renaming the home folder and losing permissions. So I'm wondering if I can re-install Leopard on my MacBook and then use migration assistant to import all my files from time machine? Or do i just reinstall leopard and go into time machine after its done and just hit restore.
In the end i wanna take my files from my MacBook to my iMac without having to carry the username over, is this possible? If not then i need to freshly install leopard on my MacBook so its identical to the iMac. so they are both identical.

it's possible but if all you want to do is change username I HIGHLY recommend you follow these instructions:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/132693/2008/03/changeshortusername.html
reinstalling leopard is completely unnecessary for this. Alternatively, you can create a new user on the current install with the name you want. then migrate all your user data from the current user to the new one. when done, delete the old user. see this link on instructions about what to move besides you own files
