Can I use my 27" as an external monitor

I've read several answers but they are confusing. In plain English, Can I connect my PC to use my new iMac 27" as a second monitor? If so can anybody tell me if I need any special connector, I already use the mini-displayport to connect a second monitor so I already have a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. Thanks in advance.

The m-DP to DVI adapter will not help you get a signal into the new iMac. It is a one direction adapter for sending the video signal out of the 27" iMac to a video device (display, projector, etc.) that uses DVI or HDMI.
To use your new iMac as a display for your PC, the PC's video output signal must be a DisplayPort signal. You would need one of the converters that will convert a video signal from the PC to the DisplayPort signal required for the 27" iMac. Those converters are new and about US$149.00+. The converters have a m-DP so you can attach the PC+converter to the new iMac with a simple m-DP to m-DP cable.

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • Can I use iMac display as an external monitor with a pc?

I have a Windows laptop with VGA output. Can I connect this laptop's VGA output to mini display port of my 27" iMac?

This can't be done. VGA is an audio signal and there are no converters to turn it into a digital Display Port (DP) or Mini Display Port (MDP) signal. DVI and HDMI are digital signals (with HDMI having audio and a different physical connector) that can be converted into an MDP signal, but doing so requires an expensive converter or an even more expensive converter and scaler if you want to get full resolution on the target display. The cheaper but perhaps more complicated alternative is to replace your PC video card with a DP/MDP card after which you should be able to drive the 27" iMac display without any converter. Apple didn't include DVI/HDMI input capability in the 27" iMac because that would have required additional circuitry that would have raised the price substantially.

  • Can I use my iPad as an external monitor for MBA?

I have a MBA"13 (latest edition) and New iPad (3-d Gen), so I'm wondering: is it possible to get extra working space for my Mac using cables and adapters or wireless solutions (Apple TV 2-d Gen)?

No. There are some apps that allow you to control the laptop remotely from an iPad, however, but that doesn't sound like what you need.

Yes you can. OS X version 10.6.6 and later can read/write exFAT. Windows XP SP3 and later can read/write exFAT. As posted by Radiation Mac, you can do it from Windows or from OS X.
However, I've noticed Windows to be somewhat picky about drives formatted on a Mac. So, if Windows can't read it, try formatting it on the Windows machine, and see how it works on the Mac.

  • I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfully use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme?  Some forums say yes, some say no.

I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme.  Some forums say yes, some say no.  I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC.  Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:
In fact, Apple’s Time Machine Web page touted this very capability as recently as last Tuesday, as you can see from Google’s October 16 cache of the page
Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.
But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

Not plugged in by USB if that is what you were thinking.
You can store files on the TC but you should NOT.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

Or you can use home sharing for free, but it will only allow you to play movies and music from itunes.
Or you can use any remote desktop software

can i use time capsule as a external hard

Yes, if you intend to use it to store back up files that you will leave alone.
But, you should not try to place "active" files on the Time Capsule.....things like an iPhoto Library, iTunes Library, Movies, Music or other files that you will be using actively on a regular basis.
Apple designed the Time Capsule for your backups.  If you use it that way, things will be OK.

  • Hi, can I use my G4 as an external HD connected in anyway?

Hi,  Hope you can help me in this....
Can I use my G4 as an external HD connected in anyway to my imac (intel) but in a way that I can see all the HD's that are in the G4?
Similar to a Raid that it lets you see more than one HD at a time.
Also if I have many HDD enclousures how can I connect them to the same port in my imac to have them working in series from each other ?
Do I need to change any of the HD settings? to what? I have 2 SATA 1TB HD, and many more IDE of different memory storage quantity.
Do I need to change anything on the IDE's?
Thank you for your help in advanced....
    G

Yes and no.  PowerMacs are formatted differently in terms of booting.   So as a repository for data, they can act as that, but not to boot both Intel Mac and PowerPC Mac from the same partition.  If you manage to make one partition GUID, while the other Apple Partition Map, the latter will boot the PowerPC, while the former will boot the Intel. While booted off the PowerPC, it can't see the contents of the Intel though. Target Disk Mode, which means holding the T key down on the QuickSilver at boot, and then hooking it up to the Intel Mac via Firewire is how you will enable the QuickSilver to appear as an external drive.  Note, I don't think that Target Disk Mode will show all internal drives.  It may only show the boot drive, or any on the logic board's  built-in Parallel ATA bus.  It is unlikely it will see any SATA drives on a PCI card, but it can't hurt to try.

I don't understand the question exactly, could you restate it.  Sorry mate, I might just be braindead.
But, as far as the issue, it is by design.  the column is a lookup columns which essentially ties to the external data.  if that data is removed, the column on your simple list becomes invalid and any edits of the simple list item will require
    it to be changed.
are you wanting to make the ECT read only?  that's simple enough.  you can pop open SPD and edit the ECT, then remove the C/E/D operations (create/update/delete).  That will not, however make it read-only in any other systems that access that
external data, as I assume its not just SP or else it wouldn't be external

Can I use Time Capsule as an external HD? In this case to edit movies in FinalCut.

Yes, but it depends on the setup if you should or not.. not everything you can do you should do.
    Are you connected by ethernet?
If you use wireless this can be super slow.. and also subject to corruption of the file.
You cannot use USB to connect.
If you are using a desktop computer, then an external drive is cheap, fast and reliable.
TM can also backup your work.
Using the TC as external drive.. Time Machine (TM) no longer has the ability to backup your work.. it can use TC as a target only.
How is the TC now setup? Did you want to setup in complete isolation to existing networking? If so how are you going to get network connection to internet etc. ??

I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work.  It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).
