Can i use my dads upgrade in december??

Question

my dads phone is eligible for a upgrade in december...his phone is not a smart phine its a samsung slide phone and he just uses it it to make calls and text....i have a smart phone and i am wondering if i can use that upgrade to get me a new smart phone??? or since its not a smart phone i cant upgrade to a new smart phone??? plz help

You: Where would I find this button?
Josh K: If you can't see it, its not there.
You: Am I able to transfer it if I order on the phone?
Josh K: You would not be able to, but let me give you an idea.
You: Ok
Josh K: What you can do is upgrade it for your line and when you get it, you can activate it on the other line, don't worry, no changes are made until the phone is activated.
You: Here is my predicament, my main line with this $50 credit is a normal phone
You: I have no data plan
You: The phone I wish to buy with this $50 credit requires a data plan
Josh K: Its cool, it won't make a difference, you are activating it on the line you want, no changes or extra charges will come to your account.
You: I mean when I upgrade with my line it will force me to get a data plan, will it not?
You: I want to give this phone to another line on my family plan that already has a data plan
You: And I want to keep my normal phone

You: But never have to get a data plan?

Josh K: Well it will, but it will erase when it goes to the other phone.
