Can I use my dvd player with apple tv?

I just got an apple tv unit.  I have dvd's stored to a hard drive and want to stream to the tv through the apple tv unit.  However, the dvd player will not work when I do this.  It works fine if I play on the MacBook, but one of the primary reasons I got the apple tv unit was for streaming.  Is there an app or download to solve this problem?  Or, should I use a different dvd playing program or application?

Yes, you should be able to.

  • Can i use a dvd player with my mac

    Hi,
I would like to know which external dvd/cd would be best for my iMac
    Many Thanks

Any external optical drives will work with a Mac.
The faster transfer drives are the ones that either use the new USB 3 standard, FireWire 800 or Thunderbolt connection.  While USB 2 and FireWire 400 drives will work, they will have slower data transfer speeds.

  • Using dvd player with apple TV and airplay

I am having problems to use the apple TV to see a DVD with the air play mode
I tried to watch a movie using the default DVD player that comes with my iMac and when I activated air play to connect the iMac with the projector through the Apple TV, the video window would go blank
The problem disappears as soon as I disactivate airplay but then I cannot use the projector big screen
Funny eough I do not have this problem when I use VLC to watch .avi files
    Can anyone help?
    thanks
    Valentina
PS I have the latest version of the Apple TV

it happens with remote desktop too it's the DRM copy protection of dvd's which kick in
so the native player is doing the right thing and VLC may be breaking the law as it's compromising the digital material in a way it could be copied

  • IPod classic wont play 3rd party dvd player with apple composite cable

I want to play the videos in my iPod classic 120GB(MB526LL) on my Phillips DCP750 dvd player. I am using the Apple Composite cable which I brought in the spring of 2008 with the Apple Universal Dock (MB125G) and they will not play. When I tried to just use the cable with the Phillips I received the error message “ TV Out Enabled Please Connect Video Accessory “ so I brought the dock Using the dock I do not get the message. Instead the audio comes through the headphones on my iPod but no video on the dvd player nor on the iPod. I have the iPod settings to TV out, screen standard and PAL since I am in the UK. Is it possible that my cables are too old and do not have the chip that I have read about? Should I be using the component cable rather than the composite? I have tried to find the older firmware prior to 1.0.2 but can’t. Is it worth my while to make an appointment with my local Apple store and take cables, player, dock and iPod to the Genius bar? If anyone has had this problem and figured it out could they explain to me step by step what I should be doing. I hate the idea of having to spend more money on cables and will probably just continue to watch videos on the ipod or else on the Macbook if I can not figure out a work around.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm so frustrated that this new iMAC doesn't have a program to do this.

IDVD is included with iLife 11 ON DISK.
For making movies there is no alternative or substitute for iDVD. (Buy it while you still can.)
I've tried Burn and Toast and many others, iDVD is by far the best.

For the best quality, I use iMovie 06 with iDVD 11.

    Michelle,
You can download media components for QuickTime which will enable you to play WMA files through QuickTime on your Mac:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-media-components-quicktime
Alternatively, Get the free VLC player for Mac, which will play almost all media types:

If the interview requires Windows Media Player to be running to conduct the interview, then I fear you may be stuck, there is not a version of Windows Media Player for Mac - It is for Windows.  Your options in this case would be to borrow a Windows PC or install a valid copy of Windows on your MacBook under BootCamp.

but i lack the approprite telly - i am about to buy one for the bedroom so would the one listed below work with apple tv? it says you can connect it to a pc - is it the same thing?
i plan to go audio out to my hi-fi and use it mostly for itunes - but i am looking at it as a long term upgrade to use apple tv - movies and shows MUST be coming to the uk soon...
so can anyone help - am i able to hook this up to the telly listed below - the telly is cheap and cheerful but will be work?

You can only use Component to Scart converters if the scart on the telly is RGB enabled (unlikely on the Venturer). If youonly want to use the ATV as a way of moving music about & are not bothered about nice graphics etc, you can try connecting the ATV green component out plug to any composite video input (the yellow one). This should give black & white playback on your TV. If you have no composite video input, I had no problems using a composite plus audio to scart adapter (yellow red white, connect the green of a component cable to the yellow & you should get black & white)

  • How can I use itunes store credit with Apple TV without the credit card code?

I would like to allow guests in my home to use the credit in my iTunes account to purchase movies and TV shows on the Apple TV in my guest room.
Unfortunately, it seems that in order to make a purchase they will need my credit card security code.  If they have this, then they could purchase an arbitrary number of movies, but I would like to limit purchases to the credit in the account.
Is there any solution here?  How can I give my guests an Apple TV "allowance" (not a monthly allowance, a one-time allowance) and not give them my credit card security code?

You can't really do this with an already existing AppleID from what I know. Now, if you don't have an AppleID, here's the run-down of how to do it:
