Can i use my external itunes media folder on mac and windows

Ok, i have moved my media folder itunes to my external drive.
But i also have installed windows 7 on bootcamp
I want to use the same itunes media folder external on my osx and windows is this
possible didn't tryed it because i was afraid that i could damage the data.

Hi
Yes there is a way to use the media folder with both OSX and Windows, however you have to have the drive formatted with windows NTFS and use something like Seagates NTFS for Mac program. If you buy a Seagate GoFlex Drive it comes ready formatted with the software on board to install on your mac, then anything saved on the drive will be readable from both OS.
I use a couple of these drives for just that purpose very successfully, unfortunately I haven't come across an alternative to buying the Seagate drive.
Hope this helps.

  • How can I use my external hard drive on my mac and a windows computer?

    Hello,
Can anyone help...I have recently purchased a new external hard drive for my macbook pro, it is a 1TB hard drive. I use it for time machine back ups which only takes up about 250gb of space so obviously I have a lot more to use. I'm at University and the computers there are Windows so I'm hoping to be able to drag my uni work to my external HD and connect it to the windows computers at my university so that I have my work there as well - however I'm not sure how I should format my HD???
    Thanks

You will eventually use all of that 1TB external for the Time Machine backups, that is if you do regular Time Machine backups (It is NOT a One Time thing). So using that same external for anything else is not a good idea.
You would be much better off buying a large USB thumb drive, like 64GBs in size, and format that to one of the Windows formates that both Mac OS X and Windows can read from and write to. Those would be FAT32 and exFAT. If you are moving file less than 4GBs in size then format it FAT32. You can then copy files to it from your Mac and Read those files on the Windows PCs the school has and just stick that Thumb drive in your pocket.

  • Can I Use a network drive to work with Mac and Windows?

Is it possible to introduce a network drive which can be accessed by both Mac and PC? I manipulate images in Photoshop on my Mac but the software I use to create slide shows is only available in PC format. This software is used more or less universally in the area of photography I am invo;ved with so changing is not an option. Can anyone advise me please.
    TC

Yes sure. Any NAS type drive formatted in any way will work. Both Mac OS X and Windows communicate by Ethernet Packets to a Networked drive and it is up to the NAS device OS to translate those Ethernet Packets to the format used on the drive.
Even if you are using a standard external drive connected to a Router or another computer, which is what a NAS is (A self contained computer with Operating System and hard drives), that router or NAS box does all the translating.

  • Can I use same LR 5.4 catalog across Mac and Windows PCs?

Newb question here. I'm just learning LR, and have installed LR 5.4 on both my Mac and on my Thinkpad (running Win 8.1). Can I create a single LR catalog on a detachable drive, and then use it to edit  my LR work (i.e., moving it between machines) on either PC? I prefer to edit on my Mac, but the ThinkPad is the one that goes with me when I travel for business.  Thanks!

You are permitted two activations; so yes. But you will need an external hard drive formatted for both platforms. Many drives formatted for Windows can't be written to from a Mac.
The alternative is to use a travel catalog, and then export it in order to combine into a master catalog. See this video tutorial:

HI my mac is low on memory and i want to erase some apps that i don't use in the iTunes media folder that i have already eraed from itunes
how do i erase them without going one by one checking names???

There is no way to automatically select the unused apps.  But, you can go go through your apps library and hold the command key as you select each app you want to delete to get them all at once.

  • In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro

In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro?

To do what? Yes you can connect a USB flash drive to the system and if it has the Recovery HD files on it you can boot from it. If it has the OS X install files on it you can boot from it. If it is large enough to contain a Time Machine backup on it you can restore your system from it.
So what do you want to do with the USB thumb drive?

Thanks so much.  I downloaded Acrobat XI.  It's been "extracting" for the past 30 minutes (even with a fast wi-fi).  Hope this is not a problem.

  • HT203167 My iTunes Media folder is missing and I cannot access my music files anymore to back them up.

I back up files constantly to an external drive. I went to back up again & my iTunes Media folder is gone & I can't find it anywhere (including Trash Bin). Will I have to uninstall then reinstall iTunes to get that venue back? I've even tried changing the location in my preferences of where new file should go to & nothings doing.

Compacting is deleting messages marked for deletion. It has nothing to do with trying to squeeze out just a little more space in an already full folder.
Here are some good articles that you could probably benefit from reading.

You could also create folders under Local Folders and move the older message there.

  • Using an external hard drive with a Mac and a PC?

I have an external hard drive that I've used with my Windows PC/ itunes / music that I've copied to the PC. Can I use the external hard drive that I use with my Windows PC on my Mac/ itunes / music I've downloaded to my Mac?

    (1) Any hard drive may fail at any moment. If you don't have a backup for this external hard drive, your pictures are half-gone already.
    (2) If you're trying to make this drive a repository for your music and pics, then its best to format it as FAT32. That's the file system with the widest compatibility, and you'll be able to use the drive with Mac, Win, media players, even TVs with built-in media players. For practicality, it's probably best to keep it attached to a desktop machine and share it on your home LAN for all other devices.

  • How to create shared folder between mac and windows

how to create shared folder between mac and windows

Us ean external drive formatted FAT32 or ExFat. Both OSx and Windows can read/write to the drive and both can use the same data files as long as you have a program that can open and save these files. For example, Word running both on OSx and on Windows will be able to work with the same document on the external drive.

  • External Hard Drive Compatible with Mac and Windows?

So my old laptop is a Dell Latitude and I bought a Western Digital external hard drive and put all my files/pics/music on it. The information the WD came with said its compatible with Mac and Windows, but when I plug it into my brand spankin new Macbook, it doesn't register with the computer and won't show up. What's going on?

I recently ran into that problem. In order to have the hard drive compatible for both PC and Mac it must be in a FAT32 format. In order to do this though all your files will be deleted (in order to reformat). You can do this by plugging in the hard drive into you mac and going under disk utility and there you will find your hard drive and under erase change the format to FAT32 and then you press erase (all will be deleted off the external drive though)

  • ITunes can't locate any music/iTunes Media folder cleared

I ran a few cleaning programs to clear up unceassary files/cashes to get some extra space on my HD. Later, I went onto iTunes to play some music, and it asked me to locate the file. Turns out this is siutation for every file, and after further inspection, my the 'Music' folder in the 'iTunes Media' foler is empty. For over half the music in my library, the only copy of the .mp3 was in this folder. I am not 100% certain that it was removed from using these cleaning programs, but it is the only reason I can think of.
Is there anyway to efficently locate the missing files which I do have in another location? (I have tried the method were you locate one and iTunes does the rest. This was ineffective). Is there any way to recover the files which were lost/could they be anywhere else? Finally, am I able to utilise my iPhone/iPad (which has substancial music on it) to help locate .mp3 files and/or re-add songs which have totally been wiped.
A horrible situation. If there is nothing i will have to restore my computer to its last back up which was 4 months ago .
    Thanks for any help!

Hey, make sure that your extnal hard drive is connected. Start
iTunes. No need to connect your iPod at this stage.Go into
Edit - Prefs, select the advanced tab at the top and
ensure that the path to iTunes music folder location is
set to your ext. hard drive. e.g. E:\exthd\iTunes\music. Always
ensure that your external hard disk is connected before
you start iTunes otherwise iTunes will get confused.
The 4500 songs should now be seen by iTunes.
The odd few albums/songs that are located on your c:\drive
will now have a circle next to them, indicating that the
original files cannot be found. Simply move these to the
external hard disk and re-import the individual
    songs/Albums again.

  • How can I use my external hard drive on both pc and mac, but also being able to use it to back up my mac data?

I want to be able to transfer some of my files from my laptop to my macbook, but not all of them. I have a NTFS external hard drive and I have heard about reformatting it so that it can read/write across both systems, but can I still use this hard drive to back up the data on my macbook? If I can, how should I go about reformatting the hard drive?

    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • Can i use time capsule as external hard drive for both mac and windows

I have a mac book pro, ipad and iphone and ipod and a windows pc
Can i use time capsule as a external hard disk only for all of the above ( including windows ) without the back up activity for mac ?

You cannot access the TC from iOS devices without a browser. eg filebrowser.
Can i use time capsule as a external hard disk only for all of the above ( including windows ) without the back up activity for mac ?
Yes, with the following proviso.. the TC is not able to back itself up.. so if you store files on the TC without backups one day you will discover all your files are gone because of a hard drive failure of the TC. TM also cannot backup TC.. so you will need to buy a proper backup software.
It is also much slower than a real NAS..
And windows can be a bit painful.. especially windows 8.. other versions should work if you spend the time getting everything set right.

  • My wife has her own mac address for her iPhone.  Can she use a different iTunes login to access match and all of our music?

If this is possible to do, what are the steps to get all the music onto her iPhone's iTunes?  She already has her own iCloud login, so just need to know how to add different iTunes login to her phone to access music.

Thank you for your help... I may have mis-stated a little, because she does have an Apple ID that she uses on that phone for the cloud and the app store, etc... She has just never put ny music on there or connected it to a computer with iTunes and set it up.
So with her having her own Apple ID... Can she use a different ID to get music on the phone, while keeping her personal Apple ID for everything else?  If so, how?
