  • Where can I find an adapter that will let me use my firewire 800 devices with a thunderbolt only ported macbook air?

Been looking for a way to use my firewire 800 devices with my macbook air - which has only usb and thunderbolt ports.  I've seen internet pages for an adapter from sonnet but have not found anywhere to actually purchase such a thing.  Would love to be able to at least try to use the thunderbolt port - for something - or trade the thing in for something with present day usable firewire 800 ports.  Is this thunderbolt technology already getting shelved?  I see like 5 items on the market that actually use this port...  really?  That's it?   Thank you for any guidance!

Sonnet has an TB-capable expresscard adapter.

  • Using the firewire 800 port for my firewire 400 devices

I will be purchasing, at long last, a new mac mini to replace my faithful and well behaved G4 mac mini. I have a 20" cinema display and an external firewire 400 backup drive with the same form factor that sits below the mini. I would like to continue to use these peripherals as well as my video camera DV out. Ideally, it would be cool to have a FW800 hub that had both 800 and 400 places to plug my peripherals, but I don't see that available. Should I get a hub and adaptors for the fw400 components I want to add, or use the hard drive with an adaptor to the mini, then use the FWports on the drive for the monitor, and whatever else I want, thereby using the drive as a hub...
Any advice to this ignorant question would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Since Firewire 400 devices still operate at Firewire 400 speeds regardless of whether or not they are connected by adapter to Firewire 800 ports, the best thing to do is just get a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter, and attach it to a Firewire 400 hub known to be able to do all the functions you desire.
Note, migrating to Intel Macs from PowerPC Macs is not as easy as the Migration Assistant, as this user tip explains:

  • Is it possible to convert a firewire 800 port to a USB 3.0?

I have a mac-mini from 2011; one generation before they switched to USB 3.  Is there any way of converting the firewire 800 port to USB 3.0, that would allow me to take advantage of newer, high-speed peripherals?

Unfortunately, getting a new computer is cost prohibitive.  The high cost of Thunderbolt peripherals makes that unlikely, as well.  It seems silly to invest in further Firewire products--when you can find them--given the switch by Apple.

  • Can I use my firewire 800 wd hd in my windows boot camp?

I have a my passport studio 1tb hd with usb and firewire 800, i just installed windows 7 via bootcamp on my computer. I partitioned a portion of it to exFat which I plan on converting to NTFS or something. Can I use it with the firewire cable any way? I don't have the usb with me at the moment.

I removed the exfat partition because windows didn't recognize it. I left about 200 gb of free space though. I looked in computer management, under disk management and windows shows my ext hd as being unallocated, even though it is hfs+ and contains about a gigabyte of info. My question is: if I try to make a partition using windows, will it erase the information on my hfs+ portion?

  • Can i use an old car charger with a usb port to charge my iPhone 5s?

Can I use an old car charger for a not smart phone to charge my iPhone 5s through the usb port?

    Usually you can!
check if the specification of charger (USB output) is 5V (very important) and at least 500mA (more power like 1000mA --> 1A allow you to charge greater devices like iPad)
But personally is not good idea, because in short/long time can damage or reduce the life of battery of your iPhone/iPad etc.
    Bye

    Hi Jessica,
No, the SD slot will not work, you need an ExpressCard/34 slot.
I do not know if it works with cameras, but with two or more HDs, if the first one has two FW ports, you can "daisy chain" one or more additional HDs from it.

  • How can I use a firewire hard drive on a new Macbook with one USB-C only?

How can I use a firewire hard drive on a new MacBook with only one USB-C?

kaz-k is correct about FireWire not being supported by any possible connector or adaptor to USB-C and never will.  However, there is no such thing as a FireWire Hard Drive.  There are only SATA (or if it is a really old one, ATA,) drives in a FireWire enclosure.  If you can remove the drive from the case/enclosure - bust it open somehow if it is a glued-up unit - then the drive can be placed into a regular USB3 enclosure. Then it can connect to the new MacBook via any one of the adaptors Apple sells.

  • HT4060 Can I use the power cord (30-pin and USB) that came with iPad 2 to charge it in my car's USB port?

Can I use the power cord (30-pin and USB) that came with iPad 2 to charge it in my car's USB port?  Or do I need to purchase one of those cigarette lighter charging devices?  Thanks!

You'd have to read your car manual but chances are it won't put out enough power for the iPad. The car is likely set up to charge a phone, most of which typically want half the power an iPad wants.
I think your  options are to get a cigarette lighter looking charger, making sure it's powerful enough for an iPad...or you can get power inverters for about $25, where they plug into the cigarette lighter/power point and have a normal household type outlet on the other end. Then you'd just plug your charger  in like you would at home.
Another option would be to look for something like a Zagg Sparq, which is a battery operated charger...plug the Sparq into the outlet at home. Its battery holds a charge and you can use that to charge your device. (zagg isn't the only manufacturer of such a device, Targus has one as well). Just look for portable chargers.
The key to remember is to make sure it's rated for an iPad, which will want more power than a cell phone.

  • MacBook Pro 13'' FireWire 800 Port

    Hey all
I'm quite worried about the FW 800 port in my macbook pro 13''. Any time i connect my camcorder to it, it doesn't show up in iMovie nor final cut pro. However in system profiler Firewire is showing up but all that is displayed is the speed of the port "800MB/s". The FW 800 cable which is a 9-4 pin connector I purchased off ebay does feel quite odd though it feels really stiff and also has various lumps inside the outer skin. I have ran the apple hardware test which the machine past even on the longer running test.
I then also tried Verbose mode at bootup and mentioned the firewire status as being okay, does it sound just like the cable or something more serious. is there any other software type tests I can run to check the port?
tomorrow however I am going to be testing the cable on my mates macs using his FW 800 port to find out. Should i be worried about the FW port?
    regards R Nicholson

    Hi MU&P,
Cables are a very common cause of connection problems under firewire , and yours certainly sounds like it may have problems, so I'd rank that as the most likely issue.
It is not clear from your comments, though, whether you have used this camera with a Mac successfully before.
If it is not a camera that you are familiar with (I say this in part because of the time of the year!) it would pay to check and double check the processes involved in setting up the connection. You have the camera set to play, rather than record or in the confusing named "PC" computer connection mode which appears on some Panasonic cameras and is only actually used for transferring still photos stored on the cameras photo SD card?

    Hello afrmedia,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your FireWire 800 port.  I found an article with steps you can take to troubleshoot an issue like this.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

  • New imac has only one firewire 800 port?

Is there a hub or repeater you can use instead of daisy chaining. Can't figure out why my old imac has two firewire ports and the new imac has one. How are others managing multiple hard drives? I wish to use a hub for my firewire connections. What is the best way. thanks

You can locate Firewire hubs however they are expensive. I have had 3 Firewire 800 external HD's daisy chained together for 3 years that work flawlessly. The drives I have come with 2 FW 800 ports so this is quite easy, there are several top quality external HD's that are similar including:
    OWC Mercury Pro line
Lacie Quadra D2 line (this is what i have)
    G-Tech G series line
All of these drives have similar specifications and are all high quality products. I think you will find them to be the most recommended on these forums.
BTW your old iMac had 1 Firewire port and 1 Firewire 800 port not 2 firewire ports.

  • Adding Firewire 800 ports

    Hi there
Anyone know how I add / install Firewire 800 ports to my mac pro and can recommend the appropriate card to get.
I would like to generate 4 more ports for external hard drives.
If anyone has a video or photo link where I can see how to install that would be fab.
I have trawled for too many hours now trying to find this info-apologies in advance if it's right under my nose in discussions.
    Cheers

First of all... do we speak about °Celsius or °Fahrenheit...?
My northbridge is at 167° F (75° C)... or should I say "was"... of course I installed smcFanControl and boost the minimum fan speed up by +250rpm the heat went down to 127° F (53° C)
Looks like we have pretty same understanding of building up our work space
I have two cable slots installed under my Desktop - one for the power cords and one for the data cords. In fact that my desktop is very large an I have 4 MACs, an A2+ Printer, all external devices, an APC and all the network stuff under it in a line. The desktop is mounted to a wall and the space between the wall and the devices are about 1/2m. At the end of the line I use a large fan which pick up the hot air and transport it into the room... to the inlet of the AC... the outlet of it is blowing right at the front of all devices. It works great.... just like a heat pipe... I checked that with a smoke generator.
