Can i use my G5 drive in the Mac Pro?

Hi.
I have a 2005 G5 with a western digital serial ata drive with all my audio on it.
I also have an airport card which id like to put in the mac pro.
Can i put them in my new mac pro which i should get in the next few days?
Im not sure if there is a faster airport now and i should buy that?
Cheers, Benji

Sometimes it is okay, but in the end, you are much better off to clone the drive, erase format so it has a GUID partition scheme. Really.
As for 4 yr old WD drive, keep it for an emergency boot drive or something. I'd say put it in USB/FW case but not everything is happy in FW land lately. Pick up some new SATA drives, they are more than 2x faster, and $100 for 1TB.

  • Can you use a VGA monitor on the Mac Pro model?

I'm considering getting a new Mac Pro to replace my beloved PowerMac G4 MDD. I have a ViewSonic Graphics Series 19" CRT monitor (VGA) that I use as a palette monitor, with a 19" SyncMaster LED as my main monitor (DVI). My PowerMac's video card has both DVI and VGA ports.
Will I be able to use my VGA monitor with the basic Mac Pro (MB871LL/A)? Will a DVI/VGA video port adapter work, and if so, will it work well? Thanks.

I had two 19" Viewsonic WS monitors hooked up to my X1900XT on my MacPro and it worked just fine with the VGA/DVI adapters (I got the small 2" white adapters that don't have any "cord" in the middle. I swapped them out for two 22" WS Acer monitors and now use the DVI inputs and I am still happy.

  • Can you use external hard drives with the HP Omni 10 5600US

Since this a Windows tablet, can you use external hard drives with the HP Omni 10 5600US?
I know there is a micro-sd reader for additional storage but can you use the usb for external hard drives like a regular pc?
I tried looking at the spec's for this tablet and it said the usb port was host only. I'm not sure what that means exactly.

Yes you can.  You'll need to purchase a USB OTG (on-the-go) cable.  I recommend using a drive that has its own power supply but I've successfully used small USB powered drives also.

  • Anyone useing an SSD Drive in a Mac Pro? Should it be Sata? or pci..can it be bootable?

    The Title says it all!
But to recap, I would like an SSD boot drive for my 3,1 power Mac.....I can get SSD drives in PCE or SATA configuration, which would work better?
    Thanks for any info
    Jim

EIDE or PATA hasn't been used and of course is way too slow.
SSDs today are "too fast" for the SATA II we have so you don't need SATA 3, SATA II is still hitting the wall with an SSD.
You do know that yours should get 250MB/sec but being small you need to cut down on what you store on your boot drive and use other drives for meda and data.
SATA 3 SSDs can deliver up to 500MB/sec which again is getting close to the max bandwidth of 700MB/sec that the controller chip used in the Mac Pro is capable of, which is shared by all 4 drive bays.
Many users stick the SSD in the lower optical drive bay. Very convenient. I can't remember if you have an SATA optical drive though or they still used EIDE.

  • No airport card easiest way to access wireless can you use a usb wireless on the mac

My mac pro is not equiped wirelessly, what is the easiest way to access internet wirelessly.
CanI purchase a usb wireless to work on the mac pro?

yes, you sure can.usb wifi adapters are availabe for your Mac Pro. try afterthemac.com. I don't work for them, just the first page that popped up. Dlink
makes something, but you may have heard a few stories about how DLink might be
'iffy' (someone else's words, not mine). Oh, and apparently, you can make an antenna signal  booster out of an aluminum can.....
    anyways, best of luck

  • How can I use an SSD in a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 2.66Ghz

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to work out how to use my new SSD in an old 2006 MacPro. Bear with me, I'm not an expert and trying to work out what is best for me.
I recently bought a 1TB Samsung SSD 840EVO to use in my old Mac Pro, not to use as my main machine, but as a network slave to save RAM with sound sample libraries.
I also got an Apricorn SATA III Velocity Solo x2 - Extreme Performance SSD Upgrade Kit to get high speeds
    http://www.apricorn.com/products/desktop-ssd-hdd-upgrade-kits/vel-solox2.html?gc lid=CLOi46bvqMICFVGCMgodPG8AdA
After installing the HD using the SATAIII connector in a PCIe slot, I did a hard drive test and realised I could only get about 160mbps, not 300-500mpbs which I think the SSD should run at. I had my friend test it on his machine too, and we realised the problem is the "Link Width" which says "x1" and not "x4" or something, so that the speed isn't running at full speed.
    So apparently it's not compatable.
Apparently what I CAN do is install it in a regular Hard Drive bay with a sled, which will be SATA II ... will that work?
    I think I can use this: http://www.amazon.com/Mac-Pro-2006-2008-Sled-Drives/dp/B00AN55034
Anyway - is this what I should be doing to get the fastest available connection?
Any advice would be great- thanks!!!

SATA II is generally just fine, no fuss no muss, for the system. Using PCIe to boot adds problems and most if not all such PCIe SSD cards do NOT WORK in 32-bit Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 (and the 3,1 is also sometimes difficult with some cards).
Data uses though are useful, work, and benefit. Lightroom, Aperture, scratch, even iPhoto - all those graphic libraries.
I would rewrite and make it "will the native SATA II drive bays" work, and the answer to that is YES. But not faster.
You have a 4x and 8x slot, so one of those is fine.
It is the reads and zero latency seeks along with queue depth and high 90K IOs per sec that help an SSD shine.
Putting a 250GB or 500GB EVO 840 is the easiest and best return on system improvement you can make for $120-240 (plus $14 for Icy Dock adapter).
Even the 2008 has two 4x PCIe 1.1 slots. The 2009 has PCIe 4x 2.1 slots that share bandwidth and cap out (only learned from stripping SSDs using two PCIe cards and 2-4 SSDs), so they aren't perfect either! ONLY the 5,1 really has the best PCIe design and setup.
Sonnet only supports or recommends their Tempo Pro which is what I bought, so I don't know off hand how well yours works and if it even will. Some cards do require EFI 64-bit, AND 10.8.x or later, and maybe even PCIe 2.0 - but only to work, ie they don't work or not supported in PCIe 1.0... but NOT about the bandwidth.
Booting in 10 seconds is nice. Launching a full dozen apps in 10 seconds (and ready to use) also. Only larger program suites takes 20 seconds now.
250MB/sec is nothing to sneeze at when it comes to boot drive SSD.

  • Can I use an iMac to control a mac pro

I have a 2008 Mac pro that's working well. Since I'm doing a lot a video creation that needs to go to DVD I'm not ready to give it up. but I see the need for a more modern machine for some of the newer software I would like to use. so here is the question.
Can I use a new iMac as my primary machine, and send the video files to the mac pro for rendering, compression, and storage?
also can I boot up an older OS (snow leopard) from a disk on the mac pro?
    thanks

    You can use file share
    iOS: About File Sharing
You can use remote desktop to control hte Pro by another computer
OS X Mavericks: Allow access using Apple Remote Desktop

  • What's he best portable hard drive for the Mac Pro?

What's the best portable hard drive for the MacBook Pro?

    There is no best.
Look at OWC for some options.  http://www.macsales.com/
I am biased against the ubiquitous  low price Western Digital.
I had good luck with DiskGo Edge in the past.

  • I recently bought a new iMac as well as a wireless time capsule and have it connected how can I use this external drive as the location to store all my files for iTunes, or is this even possible?

New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes?  I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.

I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion.

  • How can I use single hard drive for both Mac OS and Windows without changing the formats and reformatting?

I have a windows PC and a Macbook Air and a 1TB external hard drive. They said in order to transfer large files into the hard drive you have to change the format of your hard drive (which would be from MS-DOS to Mac Os extended) so how can I use my external hard drive on my windows PC without reformatting its files? Please heeeelp

Natively Windows can read and write to NTFS, FAT32, and exFAT while the Mac can read and write to FAT32, exFAT, and MacOS Extended.
Option 1: You can purchase driver software for Windows to allow it to read and write Mac's MacOS Extended or you can purchase a driver to allow the Mac to read and write to NTFS.
Option 2: you can format the hard drive for exFAT and use it with both Windows and the Mac without purchasing any special drivers. (Obviously the 4GB file size limit is why you don't want to use FAT32)

  • Can I use 2 Matrox DoubleHead2Go on a Mac Pro 1.1 ?

    Hi there,
I'd like to us 2 dualhead2go in order to use them on a 2009 Mac Pro 1.1 with 2 DVI outputs.
Can a Mac OSX system on a Mac Pro 1.1 with 2 DVI handle 2 devices like that, one on each DVI, in order to have 4 screens ?
Or could I only do 3 screens with an only one TripleHead2Go on one of the DVI available on the MacPro 1.1 ?
Let me know if you have tested that or now a bit more than the Matrox website...
    Regards,
    Julien

If you have a mac Pro 1,1 which can only run up to Mac OS X 10.7.5, your options are somewhat limited.
If you have a 2009 model or any model that can run Mac OS X AFTER 10.7.5, there are many graphics card solutions you can use to support as many as six displays directly from your Mac.

  • Swapping out internal hard drives within the Mac Pro

I'm thinking the answer is a huge NO but was curious to know for sure. Is it safe to switch out internal drives from within a Mac Pro while the machine is up and running? Meaning if the drive is ejected from the machine by unmounting the drive in the finder window can one then physically pull out the drive tray while the machine is still on? The same question applies to popping another Mac formatted drive into an empty slot (say from another mac pro). Kind of like popping in a thumb drive to a USB port. Just curious. Thank you.

Oh, absolutely NOT! Those slots are not designed for hot swapping hard drives. Doing so will most likely damage the drive, the computer, or both.

  • Can I cross-swap every drive in two Mac Pros?

I have a 4 core and an 8 core MacPro, each with 4 hard drives (and boot camp, Windows on each system) - right now the more powerful machine is doing my less demanding work - so I'd like to switch the workspaces between the machines.
I might think I could just power each down, pull and swap all the hard drives - so now my 8 core has the 4 drives and workspace that used to be on the 4 core, and vice versa -- and then reboot -- voila --- BUT I'm hesitant to do it, as I might be missing some risk.
Anyone that could give me more facts on the feasibility (or not) in doing that?
    Thanks for any help,
    Dave

Sorry I left out some detail in my original post -- both machines were 2.8 GHz -- the 4 core was a late 2007 (Aug) and the 8 core a very early 2008.
I did the 'all drives' swap and everything worked quite nicely. On one machine (now the 8 core) I had OSX 10.5+ , Vista 32 (Home Premium) and Vista 64. (both using Boot Camp). The Vistas all looked around for the right drivers and, after a restart or two (as required by the drivers - no crashes) everybody was happy.
The mac on both those systems came up just fine, too.
Now - I've just started using NTFS on all the windows drives/partitions and NTFS-3 on OSX to read AND write everywhere -- things are verrrrry nice.
I love the way the Mac has made 'occasional needs for Windows' so workable.
    Thanks,
    Dave H

You have the original Mac Pro. Just look at your chart for the production line dats and when yours was produced. It is not an early 2008 Mac Pro.
