Can I use my iMac as a wireless base station

Hi Everyone
I would like some help on using my I5 Imac as my entry point to a wireless system. I have the ethernet connected to my Imac, I have gone to sharing and selected internet sharing so as to use my Imac as the unit sending out the wireless signal. First questions, with LION osx how do I password protect this wieless network I'm setting up?
Next I have 2 airport expresses. On is used to extend the range of my Imac signal and the other connected to speakers. Can someone walk me through the steps in airport utility to A - extend the Imac range using one of the airport expresses and B - connect to my powered speaker.
A lot to ask but any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Al

  • Can I use my imac as an "airport base station?"

I am not able to browse the internet on my iphone when it is set to wi-fi. I am wondering why that is, and if there is anyway to make a connection through my imac?
I do run air tunes and that works fine.

How are you using "air tunes" if you don't have an AirPort Express (AX)?
If you are using an AX then connect your iPhone to the same wireless network that the AX is using. This will work as long as your AX is connected wirelessly to your network or connected via Ethernet to the network.

  • Using iMac as a wireless base station.

Is it possible to have my iMac broadcast a wireless connection through airport to allow computers to join AND to get online, basically using the iMac as a wireless router. The iMac is currently connected through a LAN line.

    Yes. It's a built-in function.
Open System Preferences Sharing pane. With Tiger, click on the Internet tab. Set things there so that you:
    +Share your connection from+ *Built-in Ethernet*
    +To computer using+ Airport
Click the +Airport Options+ button to set up the wireless network. Note (or change) the name of the network. OK out of that dialog.
    Click the Start button.
On the computers using this service, look for the network name you noted above.

  • I am considering using I Pad for a presentation and want to use it in a wireless environment and though a projector not a TV monitor. Can I use Apple TV and apple wireless base,

I am considering using I PAD for a presentation using a projector.  How can this be done.  will Apple TV connect to a projector and if so does the projector have to have an HDMI slot or is there some sort of adapter to convert VGA slot so it connects with Apple TV. I also want to do it wirelessly so does the Apple wireless device work for this purpose, is so what do I need to connect that to the Apple TV  and to projector.  So, ideally I want to be able to operate the IPAD without it being connected to cables and have the image procted on screen using a projector which only has the VGA slot not an HDMI slot. any suggestions will be appreciated.

It can use Apple Tv, but will require a wireless network as well. The Apple TV has an HDMI output, and depending on the projector it may connect directly to it through HDMI.
There are adpaters out there that will convert from HDMI to several other types such as VGA or Composite oir RGB. It would not be directly an Apple product as it would work with the HDMI cable rather than the apple TV or iPad directly.
    Basically your setup should be:
iPad  -> Wifi Network -> Apple TV-- HDMI Cable-->Adapter---->Projector
If the iPad is iPad 2 or above you can mirror the entire display to the projector through the apple Tv.
The Adapter would be something like this for instance:
    http://www.amazon.com/Sanoxy-HDMI-Composite-S-Video-Converter/dp/B0047PDBP0
    Or this:
    http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Component-Converter-Support-Surround/dp/B004F9XVBC
With that said there are projectors that can be used wirelessly from the ipad without the need for Apple Tv or any adapter.
Epson makes one and a proprietary App to use it.

Of course. You can use the modem and router you want to connect your computer to Internet, and you don't need an AirPort

  • Using an iMac as a wireless station

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I did a search and could not find an answer. I am looking into getting an AppleTV and am wondering if it is possible to use my iMac as my wireless station in lieu of buying a base station (whether that be an Express or an Extreme). If so how do I go about setting that up, and what kind of broadcast range should I expect from my iMac? Or should I just buy a base station and use that? If so, any favorites?
    Thanks for your help.

You can set up an Ad Hoc network from an imac and manage without a new base station, in my experience range appears to be reduced when setting up such a network, but I don't actually use an Ad Hoc network so am not realy very well placed to comment on performance.
As to how to set up a network, best wait until you have the equipment in front of you.

Can I use an iMac Bluetooth Keyboard with an iPad1 or iPad2?

I don't see anywhere on the Apple iMac keybaord box that states it is compatible.
I find the 3rd party ipad keyboards to be flimsy in construction.

  • Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
    Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive.

  • Can I use my iMac Install Disc on Macbook Pro?

Hi, all.  I was given a friend's old Macbook Pro and I'd like to put Boot Camp on it, but the Boot Camp instructions say I need an OSX Leopard install disc to do it.  Naturally, I just recently purged my own software binder and threw away all of my OSX discs except the one that came with iMac I recently purchased.  "Why would I need them any more?" said I.  Doh.
I have no idea what cat Apple is up to now, but the Macbook is running 10.5.8 and the install disc from my iMac is 10.6.7.  My questions:
    1) Can I use my iMac install disc on my Macbook Pro, which is about 3-4 years old?
    2) Does OS 10.6.7 qualify as Leopard?  If not, will it work for what I'm trying to do?
    3) Do I need to update the Macbook OS to 10.6.7 to be able to use that disc for the Boot Camp install?
Any information or advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

The only thing I'd add to this is that at one point in time you could go to an Apple store and purchase Lion on a USB stick.
If your MBP was compatible and you could find one of those you could boot to it, install from it then setup bootcamp.
Also if you are thinking bootcamp, also consider VMWare Fusion or Parallels which allow you to run Windows while still in OS X.

  • Can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 Wireless Printer with the AirPort Extreme Base. The printer is NOT connected at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, and is placed in another room. It worked just fine with my previous router (Linksys WRT54G). Help me!

    Hey Guys!
I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
    Can you help me? Please?!
    Thanks Folks!

This must be a tough one, no suggestions at all.

Can i use my imac as second monitor for my  pc / notebook

Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be  posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:
