The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. There is no need to charge it before you first use it. You cannot run the battery too low as the system will shut the device off before that happens to protect the battery.
Generally speaking, your Lithium battery will have the longest useable life if you avoid deep cycles. Since you can plug and unplug it as you wish, the best thing to do is just charge it up (however much) whenever it is convenient to do so (whether it is 10% discharged, or 20% or 50% - basically don't pay any attention to the battery level, just plug it in when it is convenient to do so to keep the battery topped up). And try to avoid frequent deep cycles where you run it all the way or very near to the point it auto-shuts off.

do you mean you want to play your videos from your Vixia camcorder on your iPad mini? Well, that may be a little difficut. Because the video came from your camera may not be a very friendly format.
Here you can try install VLC on your iPad mini , VLC should support AVCHD (*.MTS) natively.
If this can't work, then find yourself a free converter;
Handbrake, Any video converter ,ffMPEG etc.
If this can't wrok , or the output quality is jerky.

I'm a bit lost - you first say

In the first statement, aren't you using an SD card in the camera? And what do you mean by "unused SD card"? Cameras put their files in specific folders on a card, and your device only reads photos and video from those folders, not from anywhere else on the card.

Reading the advises on the battery (long) life it looks like the main parameter of interest for evaluating the battery performance are the cycle counts.
This also means there it is better to always keep the battery charged while using the mac in order to never let it discharge consuming cycles.
Is it really advisable? Aren't there some possible drawbacks in doing so?
(Risks due to higher temperature, risk of battery malfunctions..)

In the ~15 years I've been lurking here, there seems to be one recurring theme to posts about battery failure: the statement "I don't understand why my battery died! I never use the computer on battery power!"
As OGELTHORPE points out, use the battery every so often. I try to get 1-2 cycles on mine per month. How you do it depends on your usage pattern. I use mine at a museum where I volunteer one a week and the battery has more than enough capacity to power my MBP through my shift.
Think of your battery in term of human muscles: if we do not exercise a muscle, it will atrophy and become disabled. So it is with your MBP battery.

HT4061 I can't use my ipad mini. All buttons are frozen including the on and off, can't even find the serial number, can't see it on the back, can't find it under settings because no buttons will work. Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

My ipad mini is frozen and won't allow me to use any buttons. I can't access settings to get the serial number for Apple Support and I can't read the serial number from the back. It's too small and shadowy. There is a message that reads "ICloud Backup--This ipad hasn't been backed up in 2 weeks. Back ups happen when this ipad is plugged in,locked, and connected to Wi-Fi."
It won't allow me to shut if off using the on and off button. I stuck a paper clip into the tiny reset button, but nothing happens.

This is the most common "fix" when devices are behaving strangely. It only takes a minute and there's no risk of lost data. This is the reason you'll see this fix being suggested so often.

I found out that it takes between 15 - 20 minutes to update to OS 5.1 over wifi on my iPad 2. While the iPad is downloading the new update can I still use the iPad to play solitaire or listen to Sirius? Once the download is complete and the installation begins I understand I won't be able to use my iPad. Will the iPad download the update in the background? If I play games or listen to Sirius will that affect how long the download takes? Just wondering.

Personally I let mine just get on with the update and didn't use it during that time - using it might slow the update down, especially if you are using an app that accesses the internet. 15 to 20 minutes isn't long to wait until using again.
