Can I use my iPod as a hard drive?

In addition to listening to music and looking at photos, I would like to use my iPod as a hard drive. I was able to set the switch to do this on my Mac Powerbook in iTunes. But I want to transfer some files to my desktop PC. I don't want to put the same music on my PC and Mac! I never use the PC to listen to music. But I would like to use the harddrive feature. I'm afraid that if I try to connect to the PC using iTunes it will erase my music and make me start all over again. Is there any way to set a switch on the PC so it can see the files on the the iPod?

In case your iPod has been used initially on your Mac:
If you want to use your Mac formatted iPod as ext HD on a Mac as well as on a Windows PC you will loose all your iPod content once, as your iPod has to be re-formatted on a Windows PC using the latest Windows-Ipod-Updater.
Having done so - although not supported by Apple - your Windows formatted iPod will work on a Mac as well as on a Windows PC.

  • Is it true? You can't use video iPod as a hard drive?

I can't believe that Apple would reduce the functionality of a new product, but I have heard that due to the absence of firewire, you actually can't use the new video iPods as hard drives.
Does anyone know if this is really true?
Half the reason for buying the 60G is to be able to backup files that are too big for a DVD...

I had reported in another thread that the long and short of it is that USB2 and Firewire 1394a are virtually the same, with differences. See this website for more info than you'll need. http://www.directron.com/firewirevsusb.html
Bottom line is that there is little difference regarding speed.
    Hope this helps!

Can I use a non apple wireless hard drive with time Machine?

Some NAS (network storage) systems do claim to support Time Machine, with varying levels of success. For example, the Synology units have this feature. They're not officially supported by Apple, though.

  • I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme  802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?

I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme  802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

  • Can i use applications from an external hard drive?

Can i use applications from an external hard drive?

Photoshop itself needs to reside inside of it's Applications folder so that it has access to it's Libraries and plugins. So if you are going to attempt to store and run it from an external drive you need to copy the whole Application folder or install it directly to the external drive. Even still I am not 100% positive it will work as I know it still needs to access your Library/Application Support for additional files and licensing.
Why do you want to run Photoshop from an external drive?

  • Can you use time capsule as a hard drive

Can i use timecapsule as a external hard drive to store pictures and access them but not as a back up

Yes it can be mounted as an external HDD in finder and you can drag and drop on and off.

  • Can i use time capsule as another hard drive?

Can I use time capsule as another hard drive?

You can, but it was not really designed for that purpose. Access to files will be quite a bit slower than a drive that is directly attached to your computer.
The Time Capsule's main function is as a back up device using the Time Machine application.
If you are using it already for Time Machine, it is generally not a good idea to mix Time Machine backups and regular files on the same drive as there will be struggle for space when the drive starts to fill up.

  • Using your ipod as a hard drive

Hi there! I am hoping that someone out there who has an ipod can answer a question for me. I am a PC user. I'm looking into buying an IPOD, but I want to use it for more than just music. Essentially I want to use it as an external hard drive. Can you save any type of file on the ipod? can you use it for music at the same time? (so part of it holds and plays music and the other part stores data) if anyone has any information on this I'd appreciate it! thank you!

Yes, you can put any type of file which you can use on your computer onto your iPod, as long as the file is smaller than 4GB. It is possible to use an iPod for data and music at the same time as long as the iPod is in either FAT32 or HFS+ format; all iPods ship in one of those two. More information is available in this article.

  • Can you use RoboSourceControl 3 on local hard drive?

    Hello,
I'm researching how to use RoboSource Control 3 and am not
sure that I'm understanding how to get it set up. I've read quite a
few forum questions and answers, including "Use RoboSourceControl 3
without RoboServer," and spent a good bit in the RoboSource Control
3 help file and I still am missing something. It is my
understanding from what the help states, that you need to have
RoboHelp Server installed to use RoboSource 3. In my readings on
the forum, I saw something that says you don't need RoboHelp Server
to use RSC3. The help instructions state that you need to create a
database and set up a connection to a server, but I know that we
can't work on the server, so would this just be to store the full
project - not just the output? Is it possible to use RoboSource 3
on your hard drive only. If so, how can this work?
The only purpose that our team really needs it is so we can
keep versions temporarily - for instance until we are certain that
the changes we make to a project are going to be released. We have
tossed around the idea of creating backup folders for each, then
deleting them when we are certain we won't need it, but the concern
is that these won't get deleted (too busy and forget) and then we
have oodles of files just sitting there taking up space.
Thanks for any direction on this.
    Michele

RSC3 is a repository database that tracks versions for you.
    It can be installed on
a server (RoboHelp Server not needed) or on a local machine
if that user will be the only one accessing the project.
If on a local machine, you would establish a separate
directory for your RSC database and a separate directory for your
project's "working folder." Also, there's no need to involve your
output files (it's called source control, after all).
    Good luck,
    Leon

  • Confusion: Can I use my TC as external hard drive w/iMac G5 running 10.4.11

    HELP!
I am using an iMac G5 with 10.4.11
I have managed to set up my time capsule as an airport base station, but cannot seem to find any way to use it as a wireless hard drive on which to store my pics/music etc. Although I installed all the airport software etc when I started, I was presented with no options to backup my G5 hard drive at any point and can find no way to do this - I have read the forum responses that seem to relate to this theme that I can find but they dont make sense to me. Please help!

If you have already installed AirPort Utility, go to Manual Setup->Disks->File Sharing->Enabled. You may enter a password. Now you can use your HDD in TC.
You mentioned an option to back up your G5 hard drive. What do you mean by that? If you are talking about Time Machine, that is only available on Leopard. How are you backing up currently?

  • I'm using my iPod classic as hard drive to transfer the music to my reinstalled computer but the file "iTunes" is missing. Where is it and how can I get it back?

I had a virus on my Windows Vista PC so I had to reinstall the whole system. With this I also got an upgrade to Windows 7. Now I want to use the iPod classic to put the music back on the PC. According to the explanations on Apple support you have to drag the iTunes file on the iPod to the My Music file. Unfortunately there is no iTunes file on the iPod. It does work fine though and I can listen to all the music. I have to say that before I deleted the hard drive fro the PC I forgot to switch the iPod to manual sync. It was psooible though to do that with the new installed iTunes without erasing the music on the iPod. Can anybody help? I really wouldn't like to loose the countings and playlists.
    Thank you

  • Can i use my ipod like a hard disk??

As it says can i just copy my files from my computer to my ipod anyway without the itunes hassel?

it says any tunes i add cannot be played
Correct. Any music you add via Explorer won't be playable.
i dont like itunes that much and it is not easy to use with 2 ipods
I currently use 5 iPods with the same iTunes library, and it's very easy indeed.

  • How to use the  ipod as external hard drive???

I went to the windows explorer page and checked under my computer and saw my ipod as the "E" drive. Is the procedure of storing files, be it word or excel or photos as simple as dragging them into the ipod E drive location???
I have tried doing this and they seem to have been copied into the ipod, however when I checked into the ipod they were not there...anywhere. I highlighted the "ipod(E)" drive and created a new folder named "my documents" and then dragged some word files into it. I then detached the ipod from my computer and checked the ipod for the files and the new folder "my documents" and could not find them.
When you use the ipod as an external hard drive are all the documents and files you drag into it hidden???
Is there any way to view word documents?? How do you store them?
When using the ipod, is the only viewable information that comes up onto the ipod screen, info from the "itunes" page??
    cheers

You can't view any of the files on the iPod while using the iPod. You can only see them through the computer. I guess if you want, you can put the files into the "Notes" folder on the iPod and see them using your iPod, but you can only open .txt files up to 4kb big.

  • Can i use time capsule as external hard drive for both mac and windows

I have a mac book pro, ipad and iphone and ipod and a windows pc
Can i use time capsule as a external hard disk only for all of the above ( including windows ) without the back up activity for mac ?

You cannot access the TC from iOS devices without a browser. eg filebrowser.
Can i use time capsule as a external hard disk only for all of the above ( including windows ) without the back up activity for mac ?
Yes, with the following proviso.. the TC is not able to back itself up.. so if you store files on the TC without backups one day you will discover all your files are gone because of a hard drive failure of the TC. TM also cannot backup TC.. so you will need to buy a proper backup software.
It is also much slower than a real NAS..
And windows can be a bit painful.. especially windows 8.. other versions should work if you spend the time getting everything set right.

  • Using the iPod as a Hard Drive- am I doing this right?

I am in the process of transferring files (marked by the years 2005, 2006 etc.) from my iPhoto to my iPod. Will I be able to transfer them back again? How? Is this a good and a wise way of saving my iPhoto collection, so that I can free up iPhoto itself on my iMac?

If your iPod is "enabled for disk use" then when you open it in Finder you'll find a number of folders, Photos, Contacts, Notes etc. Under Photos for instance you will find two depending on how you set your preferences, one will be thumbnails (photos optimised for viewing on the iPod) and if your preferences are set to copy over full resolution versions as well you'll see a folder for those. You just access the folders as you would if they were on your hard drive.
