Can I use my iPod to restore iTunes library?

The hard drive on my MacBook Pro recently "died" and I am unable to recover any files from it. I had a new hard drive installed and want to know if there s there any way to use my iPod, which has all of my music and photos on it, to restore my iTunes library?
I am afraid to connect my iPod to my computer now, in case all of the files on my iPod disappear. Any instructions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can I use my iPod to restore iPhoto library?

The hard drive on my MacBook Pro recently "died" and I am unable to recover any files from it. I had a new hard drive installed and want to know if there s there any way to use my iPod, which has all of my photos on it, to restore my iPhoto library? I did transfer photo files from my iPod - a photo database and thumbs - but when i try to open using iPhoto i get a message that the files are unreadable?

When you copied the pics to the iPod did you include the full sized pics? It is a deliberate decision you have to make when syncing with the Library. If you didn't then all that's on your iPod are tiny thumbnails.

  • Can i use a song from my itunes library as a ringtone?

can i use a song from my itunes library as a ring tone?  If so, how do I do is?

Yes you can.  Try this process.  You have to do it in iTunes if you want to do it for free.  Or there are a number of apps you can buy that will do it for you.

  • Can I use icloud to store my iTunes library music in order to free up storage/usage space on my iPhone?

Can I use icloud to store my iTunes music library in order to free up usage space on my iPhone and iPad?

iTunes match is a true streaming service when it comes to playback from your PC. That means, you can load everything into the cloud and stream from the cloud to your PC.
To an iPhone or iPad, it's stream-and-save, meaning it will download and play immediately, but it will be saved to the device.
So yes, you can load everything up (assuming it all loads properly without problems) and stream to your PC.

  • HT1329 Can I use my iPod to move my library with new iTunes 11.0?  If yes, how??

can my iPod still be used to move my entire library from my old PC to my new laptop?  I updated iTunes to 11.0, and the interface is completely new and different, and the previous instructions no longer work...

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Can I use 2 ipods on one itunes account?  I have also used 2 computers.

I'll try to make this clear.
I had one computer and one ipod set up on itunes. The computer ran on Windows XP.
I gave the computer to my niece and left the itunes account alone.
I bought a new computer that runs Windows Vista. I installed a new itunes account.
I bought a smaller ipod to record audio books. I wanted to keep the larger ipod for music.
Now I have the smaller ipod on the new computer. If I decide to download music, I can't use the larger ipod that I want to use for music. How can I own two ipods and use itunes? I am not file sharing. I just wanted two devices for two purposes because I like to keep the audio books separate. Now if I go back to the original ipod (the larger video one)it is not recognized on my new computer. A lot of the music on the original Windows XP computer was from CDs that I owned, not just music I purchased. I probably should have just stuck with one ipod, but I didn't. I am so confused.
Can I put the music on my old ipod, from the old computer, on the new itunes? I would then just use the new ipod. It probably has much more storage than I realized. Then what happens when it syncs? Would I lose everything? Is there a machine that can transfer music from one ipod to another, then I could just sync it all on the new ipod and new computer?

    Hi mverza
Yes you can use as many ipods as you like on differnet itunes libarys. As long as you manually manage your ipods and don't sync. You can put your purchased music on as many ipods as you like (as long as you manually manage your music and you connect to the computer you bought it from). You can transfer purchased music to your ipod for a maximum of 5 computers (so you can play music purchased music on only 5 computers) although apple have changed the rules so there is no file protection)
But see here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420 for more infomation.

  • I can't sync my ipod to my itunes library held on my external hard drive

I'm having trouble syncing my ipod (colour 20GB) to my I-tunes library. I moved to Australia, got a new laptop and brought my I-tunes library from the UK on my external hard drive. I've installed I-tunes on my new laptop here, and linked I-tunes to the external hard drive. All of the songs appear on my I-tunes library as on my previous computer when I open I-tunes, but when I connect my I-pod it does not sync to the I-tunes library. I've updated the software on the I-pod to the latest software, and I'm running the latest I-tunes on my computer. When I right click on the Ipod icon in Itunes and hit "sync" nothing happens.
I don't understand as the songs on my external hard drive are all in Itunes format, I used it at home and it worked without any problems. Is it because my Ipod is somehow still synced to my old laptop?
I have tried copying all of the songs to my local hard drive, and manually dragging and dropping tunes from the I-tunes library to my Ipod using I-tunes but nothing works.
Incredibly frustrating as I can't add or remove any songs to/from my Ipod! Can anyone help me I'm at my wits end!

  • How can I manage 2 ipods on one Itunes library?

I'm sure this must have been answered elsewhere but I can't find a difinitive answer...
I have an ipod which I want to keep at home and am thinking of buying a Nano for when I'm out. How do you manage the two devices when obviously one carries vastly fewer songs?
I read somewhere that you need two itunes accounts but surely there are loads of people now with a large capacity device plus a smaller one - is it not easier than that having two seperate accounts now?

  • Help please i cant figure out how to use 2 ipods on one itunes library

ive just got a ipod mini and i already have a 20 gig ipod and i just want to put music on the mini from my itunes library already on my computer, so i looked at the info on this site and it makes no sense to me now my computer wont work for either ipod when i plug it in it says theres no ipod connected what did i do. also when i plug them in it says that there is a user already usin itunes and to have them log out but how do you log out ot itunes. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

iTunes can only be run in one Windows User account at a time. So yuo can disable fast user switching (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93395)
In order for your iPod Mini to be detected you will need to first update the software if it has yet to be done (http://apple.com/ipod/download). Once this is installed follow this article to restore your iPod (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983).
This should allow your iPod Mini to communicate with iTunes. Since the iPods arrive Mac compatible. If you plug your iPods in and neither say Do Not Disconnect simply reset the iPod holding Menu+Select.

  • Can guests using 'Remote' access my entire iTunes library or just the playlist I am using with iTunes DJ?

I am about to hold a disco for some friends and have created a playlist from appropriate tracks from my iTunes library. iTunes DJ is 'pointed' at this playlist and voting is enabled. It seems to work fine. But ... Are guests restricted to accessing the iTunes DJ playlist (I want this) or can they access the whole library (I do not want this)?
Is there a detailed user guide? I can't see one.
I presume I must transport my iMac to the venue and use one of my airport expresses to create a temporary unprotected wireless network? I say this because I have read that secured networks block voting. Trouble is an unsecured network is exactly that. Any advice appreciated.

if you have all the songs still on your ipod you can put them back on your computer from the ipod... just DONT LET ITUNES SYNC WITH YOU IPOD when you plug it back in. change the settings to manual control for syncing ipods or your itunes will delete all of them. i dont know what to do for the unchecked songs... i had a similar situation and i used a mac program to take the songs off of my ipod. hope this helps.. just google for an application that will let ya take songs off the ipod.

  • Using Time Machine to Restore iTunes Library

Has anyone had success using Time Machine to restore their iTunes library? When I try, I get a message saying that my library is "damaged".
I have tried restoring the iTunes application in addition the iTunes folder in the users/Music folder. Same result. All of the music is there as well as the playlists; however, iTunes thinks it is damaged and creates a new, empty, library.
I know it would be possible to build a new library from the music files but I do not want to have to rebuild the playlists as they are very, very extensive.
    Can anyone help? Please??

I'm having the same problem! I moved from a 2007 20" iMac to a new 15" MacBook Pro, so I bought a new external HD, copied my Time Machine backups to the new HD, and tried to restore my iTunes library from TM to my new MBP. iTunes claims my library is damaged and creates a new library file. My 80 gigabytes of media are clearly there, but they will not show in iTunes and won't play in QuickTime either. Did you happen to get this issue resolved?? It's very stressful. I have essentially lost all the music I have collected over many years.

  • How can i use icloud to synch my itunes library with my samsung android phone?

I want to sync my iTunes Library. MP3 files with my Samsung Intercept Android smartphone. Unfortunately, my HP laptop does not recognize my device when connected via USB cable, or when trying to sync via wireless networking applications from the Android Marketplace.  Any solutions or links to best resources would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
My computer system hardware:                   HP Pavilion dv4 Notebook PC,
                                            Processor:                 Intel Duo-Core CPU T6400 @ 2.00 GHz
                                            Memory/RAM:        4 GB
Operating System:   Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2
                                                                                64 bit
Device to synch:    Samsung Intercept Android Smartphone
also using SansDisk 8 GB micro SD removable media card
Wireless Carrier:    Virgin Mobile USA (running on the Sprint Wireless Network)

So I have iTunes Accounts set up, iCloud enabled and iMatch rolling. Got my library matched (well, vast majority, like many others I do have some songs that have no reason to be 'inelligible' but are not uploading. Don't lecture me on the "rights". I'm a musician with 100s of songs in my library I wrote and recorded. iTunes uploaded about 80% of them. remaining 20% iMatch says are inelligible. BS. its a bug.)
Upon turning on iCloud on my iPhones, I lost the ability to tell iTunes which playlists I want on my iPhone. Instead, I am told to download "songs" from my cloud. Annoying as that's a lot of songs to wade through again. And I have cool smart lists created to auto-sync stuff to taste. Fine.
I go to my playlist and there are no songs at all on myiPhone, even after going to settings (good luck finding that tip!) and enabling viewing "all songs" so I can see the cloud. No songs in playlists. I see all the songs if I go to an artist on the cloud and download it again. Then, back to playlist and just those songs are there!!
There is one playlist that enabled me to "download all" from my phone. Rest don't. Why????
Why can't I dictate playlists via iTunes as before?? When you have over 20,000 songs in your library, playlists are really, really important. It will take hours for me to cherry pick through the cloud to find the songs I want on my phone. The songs I already groomed via the power of iTunes.
Good idea here with iCloud, please help with the usability!!!

  • Can I use two Macs with one iTunes library?

I currently have an iMac with my iTunes library stored on an external drive, and a shiny new MacBook Pro waiting for me at the Apple Store. If I transfer my entire library from the external drive to a new MacBook, can I still access my library seemlessly on my old iMac [possibly using Home Sharing]? I would like to use both computers to access the same content, in an office and then mobile setting.
Also, if I continue to make purchases on my old iMac from Amazon or eMusic, is there a way to automatically store/transfer those on the new MacBook, the same way they are automatically stored on the external drive now?
I do have the capability and plan on connecting my external drive to my AirPort Extreme after the transfer, if that makes any difference.

See I wouldn't want to necessarily make a copy, but rather copy the library itself; so it is no longer stored on the external drive, and it's new home would be the MacBook Pro. I was wondering if I could access the MacBook library from my iMac the same way I access the external drive on my iMac. Or if I'm overthinking the Home Sharing service and really have nothing to worry about.
I do have my entire library in the iCloud, and am a Match subscriber, but it is important that I have the songs actually stored on my MacBook so I can access them when I am without an internet connection.

  • How to use iPhone, iPod, and single iTunes library

I have an iPhone, iPod and a single iTunes library. I wish to be able to plug either of them into the computer and take individual songs out of the library to play on each. How can this be achieved?

Create playlists for each iPod and sync only the playlists you want on each iPod.
    Select the iPod in iTunes.
Clkick the Music tab across the top.
Tick *Sync music* then select *Selected playlists* in the drop down and tick the playlists you want on that iPod.
Do the same for the other.

  • HOW CAN I USE ONE OF MY "PREVIOUS ITUNES LIBRARY" FILES?!

Sorry about the caps lock. I searched for thsi question and got like 10 good results, none of which had answers. iTunes asked me to choose a pervious iTunes library before, but how do I do it now?!

you can hold shift when starting iTunes to force it to ask you to create a new or select an existing library file.
