Can I use my Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro to drive two displays?

I have a Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro (NOT Retina - I wanted the optical drive...) connected to a 27" Thunderbolt Display. If I get a MiniDisplay Port <-> MiniDisplay Port Cable (and connect it between the Thunderbolt Port on the Thunderbolt Display, and the MiniDisplay Port on the iMac), will the MacBook Pro also be able to drive my 27" Mid 2010 iMac as an external Monitor?
If not, will the iMac be able to drive the Thunderbolt display?
I'm trying to get to documents side by side on the 27" monitor so I can move data between them - Word/Word, Word/Excel, etc.,
It would be nice to know the answer before I go to the store and drop the $ on the cable...
Many thanks,
Chris

After lots of reading, it seems it is possible (thanks for the link, OGELTHORPE), but I haven't been able to figure out the right cable configuration.
Confirmed my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) supports two Thunderbolt Displays
Confirmed my iMac (mid 2010) supports Target Display Mode
Confirmed this is possible based on the below...
6. Can I use an Apple Thunderbolt Display and an iMac in Target Display Mode to act as two additional displays for my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?
Yes. If your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac supports two Thunderbolt displays this is possible. Your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac will need to be connected to your Apple Thunderbolt display and the iMac will need to be connected to the Thunderbolt port of the Apple Thunderbolt display. Not all iMacs support Target Display Mode. See Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for more information. Once connected, place the iMac into Target Display Mode to enable it as the second external display.
Notes:
Make sure the Thunderbolt Display is connected to your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac and is being recognized and used by the Thunderbolt-equipped Mac before connecting the iMac to the Thunderbolt display.
If the iMac is placed in the Thunderbolt chain before the Apple Thunderbolt Display, the Thunderbolt display will work as an external display for the iMac and it will stay active as an external display for the iMac, but it will not function with the main Thunderbolt-equipped Mac using the iMac's display.
To use an iMac in Target Display Mode when connected to an Apple Thunderbolt Display, the iMac must be Thunderbolt-enabled, and a Thunderbolt cable must be used (not a mini-DP cable).
The bulletpoint that worries me is the last one. I have tried with both a mini display port cable AND a thunderbolt cable, but the last bulletpoint seems to suggest that this is not possible if the iMac is NOT a Thunderbolt enabled iMac (which mine isn't). It does however say elsewhere that my iMac acting in TDM mode acts as a Thunderbolt Display, so it's all a bit confusing!!! It seems that my MacBook Pro can't drive both displays; so now I'm trying to figure out how to get the iMac to treat my Thunderbolt display as a second monitor.
Fingers crossed...

  • Mid-2012 retina macbook pro nvidia gpu panics

I bought my mid-2012 retina macbook pro in September 2012. It is 8 months out of warranty. I always look after it and use it carefully. Since 2 weeks ago, I encountered the problems below,
1.turn into black screen after running for about 15 mins, but the system is still running because the keyboard is still functional. After reboot, i record the log as below, it shows that it is a GPU Panic.
    2. display would not turn on after pressing the power button but can still hear the apple start up chime and the system keep running with the screen
    off.
    3. after erased the hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. Under a new installed system, it can run normally for about 1 day, after that especially after a shut down or restart, the problems above came back.
I am currently working in Thailand but I have no plan to go back to the US in a short period of time. I brought the laptop to the local apple service, they said it is certainly the logic board or GPU failure and the parts need to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is around half of the price that I paid for this laptop. I feel really disappointed so I called apple telephone service if there is anything that they can help. However, instead of helping me allocate the cause of these problems, the suggestion I received is to buy a new Mac Book and accept the fact that I am just unlucky in this case. This is the first time in my life to encounter mother board or GPU failure excluding artificial damage, they are supposed to be reliable espeically under the name of Apple. It is just so hard for me to accept it.
Below is the system message of the problem, it would be much appreciated if anyone can give me some suggestion that can help me to fix my problem at the lowest cost. Thank you very much.

Just started getting these too. The only workaround I've found online is disable the discrete graphics card using gfxCardStatus. I can't use my multiple monitors when using just the integrated graphics card, but it's allowed me to limp along until I have time to get into an Apple Store.

  • Multiple hard drive failures on multiple mid-2012 13" macbook pros

I have a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro (500GB hard drive), which is actually the third one I've owned in two years. The hard drive on my first laptop failed and was replaced at least five times (I lost count) before Apple agreed to just replace the machine after about a year and a half. Thinking that was the end of it, I was unpleasantly surprised when the second machine's hard drive failed after just a month. Luckily, Apple was willing to replace it right away since it had only been a month. Now it's been about four months since I've gotten my third laptop, and its hard drive has just failed.
At this point, it seems like the problem is something I'm doing, but I don't see how that's possible - I don't handle my laptop any differently than the average college student, and many of my friends who own MacBooks haven't had this issue. I don't have above average knowledge of computers, and Apple representatives haven't offered any solutions aside from just replacing the hard drive, so I know that that's exactly what they're going to do if I take it to the Genius Bar again. I know enough to see that the issue isn't the hard drive, and I'm so fed up now that I just want to get rid of this laptop altogether. Does anyone know of anything that could be causing the problem, and is there anything else I can do?

The range of reported problems using an external monitor or projector and the mid-2012 MBP is dizzying. The only way I've found to use an external monitor is to shutdown and plug the monitor in prior to rebooting. Any attempt to attach a monitor (or projector) after I'm up and running fails. All the trashing of plist files, resetting PRAM, etc etc. doesn't solve anything.
And turn off energy savings. If my MBP goes to sleep, it won't find the external monitor when waking. I have to reboot again.
Bush league problems. Our only encouragement is that it appears to be a software issue, since booting into Windows solves the problem. So we can hope for a fix. I'm pretty disgusted with Apple here. They've had a lot of time to fix this since 10.8 was released. I've been an exclusive Apple user since 1984. But as they've gotten fat and sassy, their quality control and responsive service has sunk. I can put up with their secretive, non responsive approach if things get fixed. But if they don't, they're headed for the ash heaps.

  • HT2952 Bus power while sleeping on mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro?

I have an external hard drive connected to the Firewire 800 port with a FW800-FW800 cable. It is bus-powered. On my previous Mac, a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro, the drive would remain powered while the computer was asleep - it would spin down, but the lights on the drive would remain on, and it would spin up again when the computer woke up. Perfect. But my mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro cuts off bus power in sleep mode, so the drive no longer wakes up with the computer. Both are running OS X 10.8.3.
The FireWire Ports: Specifications KB article says, "Output power is always available if the Apple computer is connected to AC power or is running (even on battery). Output power can be used to power FireWire hubs and devices such as disk drives and audio break-out boxes that operate within the limits of the computer’s FireWire port." I don't know whether "always available" includes sleep mode.
The reason this is a problem is because when I wake up the computer, the drive remains off, so any applications that had open files from that drive get confused, changes lost, etc. Basically, it's a disturbance.
I have tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC on the newer MBP, but it didn't change this behavior.

Thing is, at least I experience a very similar issue (as have many others) with AC Power. The OP doesn't really state whether on battery or AC power.
I had my 2011 MBP for over 2 years and my MOTU Ultralite audio interface for the same period. For the entire 2 years, my MOTU would be conneceted via FW800 and bus-powered. It would not lose power when my computer went to sleep (default Snow Leopard settings, going more than 24 hours without being touched). A few months ago, a new piece of software asked me to upgrade to Mountain Lion and, since that upgrade, I've had problems with my MOTU losing power when connected via FW800, all while connected to AC power... for no good reason.
At least while on AC power, I would think "always available" means always available regardless of sleep mode.
Like the OP, I have not had succes with NVRAM or SMC resets.
In browsing other threads, I see that some have had some success resetting permissions.

can i use air play with my macbook pro and apple tv

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

  • Can I use 4K monitor with my MacBook Pro Non-retina?

I am considering to use 4k monitor for my MacBook. I have mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro. But I'm afraid that it will not perform as good as standard hd monitor. I'm wondering if any of you have tried using 4k monitor for your MacBook. Thank you.

Won't work - at least not with 4K resolution.
Supposedly, the late 2013 retina machines with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 memory will run 4K resolutions - but only in Windows 8, NOT in any version of OS X, yet.
So you'll just have to buy a new Mac Pro or wait until Apple comes out with an OS that supports running 4K on a new MacBook Pro Retina and buy that.
    Sorry,
    Clinton

I can not use CanaScan N670U with my Macbook Pro. I download Canoscan toolbox 4.1 from Cannon websit. It still keep saying "The scanner plug-in was not found". Please help

There is a solution (I'm running Snow Leopard on a Core2Duo iMac, but this problem arose when I was running Leopard on a G4 PowerBook too).
    Problem:
You download the OS X driver for the scanner from Canon's site. I already had the CanoScan Toolbox (4.1) stored on an external drive.
You unzip the driver and run the VISE installer. After a search it finds your copy of Photoshop (and maybe even the CanoScan Toolbox), and you click to install on that/those location(s).
You get a couple of error messages, which you click through.
You restart your computer and try to run the scanner but you get an error that the driver is wrong or missing and the process will abort.
    Solution:
BEFORE you restart, and with the installer package still open -
    1. Copy the Into_CFMSupport_Login & Into_CMPrefs folders to
    Applications : Canon Utilities
    Applications : Canoscan Toolbox
and remove the prefix Into_ from each folder
    2. Check whether the installer placed N067U_Library.shlb into the top level (not User level)
    Library : CFMSupport
and if it didn't, move it there yourself
THEN restart, and try again. It worked for me (via Photoshop), but whether it will work for everyone, I don't know.

As this thread is marked as solved it won't get the attention your query warrants. It would be a good idea to start your own thread discussing the problem - I'm sure someone here will offer the right advice/help.
Make sure you note what Mac your have and what version of OS X you are running.

My MacBook Pro Mid ´12 comes with 4GB 1600MHz RAM. I upgraded this to 8GB 1333MHz. Does this cause a hot MacBook Pro near the battery?

Can the 1333MHz RAM be the problem for heating?
Not likely.  Usually it will be a function of the stress placed on the CPU/GPU by applications.  Hardware faults may be another source of heat such as the fans.
I will buy Corsair Vengance, what do you think about this brand?
If the specifications are the correct ones, it should work.
    Ciao.

Yes it is possible, as long as the wattage is the same.
