Can I use my old iPOD as a external Disk

Hello,
I have an old ipod Touchwheel (firewire) and I thought that it amy be useful as a form of external disk (10Gig).
Do you know if it is possible to use it as an external disk and also clear all the ipod software etc from the ipod so that i can utilise most of the 10Gbyte available?
THanks
John

Hi John,
I don't think it can be used as an eternal disk but you can enable your iPod for hard disk use for storage.

The iPod charger is only 5W.
    The iPad 2 needs a 10W charger.
It will charge slower and hotter.

Can i use my old IPOD dock with the new G5 IPOD?

That's really good to know. I thought because it was a different thickness you wouldn't be able to, and the dock adaptor that comes with the new iPods doesn't fit into the old Photo dock.
Do you know if you can use the charger that came with the old Photo iPods? You can plug straight into the power socket, but the cable that goes into the charger from the iPod is the firewire cable, so I was thinking maybe it wouldn't work, and I don't want to try it in case I short out my iPod or something!

  • Have a new iMac.  can i use my old mini as an external cd/dvd drive?

Just got my new imac and have discovered it is without a cd/dvd drive.  Since I have converted from a mac mini can I use the old mini as an external drive, and how do I do that if the response is yes?

    I use LaCie.
My last cd/dvd burner was a LaCie, and it worked perfectly for three years before a bronze sculpture fell off a shelf and landed on it, putting a big dent right in the top of the metal case. I thought that would be the end, but it kept working perfectly, dent and all, for another two years before I finally replaced it.
When my current drive needs to be replaced, that will be a LaCie, too. Same with their external hard drives. And no, I don't work for them.

  • Can i use my old ipod firewire power brick to charge my iphone?

i have a power brick from an old 20g b&w ipod. it looks like a laptop brick, but smaller. it has a FW socket and says it puts out 12v 67a.
i'm going on a trip and would like a spare charger. will this work for my iphone 3g or will it fry it?
    thanks!
btw - i did a search on this topic and found similar threads, but none addressed this particular FW charger.

i'm getting a 404 error on that link for the ipod touch manual. but i looked at p.33 of the iphone user's guide, and it does say that you can't use a FW charger. it doesn't say why, however.
i see that the iphone charger is 5w/1a. what happens if you use a 12w/67a charger with a device that's configured for the former?
according to somebody in this thread, the device being powered "requests" only the power it needs, so you can use a more powerful charger (a MBP charger for a MB, for example) - but you can't use a less powerful charger to charge a device that needs more power (a MB charger for a MBP, for example).
(for instance, can you charge a macbook with a macbook pro brick - i know you can't do the reverse)

  • TS2634 Can I use my old ipod camera connector with ipad [3]? I keep getting accessory not supported message

I have tried to use my old camera connector and it doesn't work. many posts indicate the new ones don't work either.  Anyone know if the USB camera connector would or should work with my ipad and my rebel T2i camera?  Would buying a new connector work?
    Thanks.

What do you mean by "old camera connector"? Do you mean the one that was put out years ago for the iPod? No, that doesn't work. The current Camera Connection Kit works just fine.

  • Can I use an old hard drive as a disk?

I had a hard drive with files and got it replaced at the apple store. i was told I could take the files from the old hard drive and use it as an external disk to import my old files. It was a sata cord, but now I called 1800-myapple and I was told I needed some other apparatus. What is the easiest way to import the files from the old hard drive to the computer?

The "easiest" way is to adapt your old drive to USB.
This can be done in a variety of ways, such as with a full enclosure or just a quick adapter.
The enclosures are usually less expensive, but don't really afford quick swapping to other drives and other drive types. So what you use depends on just what reason you want to keep that other drive. An enclosue usually means you want to keep that drive for continual dependant storage.
Here are two quality units from Apricorn. I have one of the adapters, and it has come in handy on a variety of occasions. I usually use it on smaller drives that I don't care to expend money upon to buy a dedicated enclosure for. As well, a small HDD that was replaced is often nearing useful life if it was well used, and is not something I'd want to entrust to further dependant use.

  • Can I use my old iPod 3G dock with my new iPod Touch

I just got an iPod Touch, and I am wondering if there are any reason why I shouldn't use it with the old dock that came with my iPod 3G in 2004. It seems to sync and charge without any problem, but I'm wondering if it could cause physical damage because it's not designed to support that shape, or if there's any other potential issues. The iPod Touch came with an adapter, but it doesn't fit my ancient dock.

I do not understand why a 2G Touch would not charge from an AC connector. I am charging mine with the AC connector which came with my iPod Photo. That may have been the last iPod to include the charger with the device. But yes, it charges the Touch just fine. However, my Bose dock does not work with the Touch at all. I understand that it would not be able to charge it, but I can't even play through it. Two other docks I have are the same EXCEPT that both of them have an auxilliary input and I can play the Touch through a cord going into that input, lying down of course, not in its dock.

  • Can i use and old ipod for time machine backups?

i've reformatted the ipod and enabled it for use as a hard drive. will it work with time machine? time machine doesn't seem to be recognizing it...

Generally I wouldn't rely on the iPod for backing up because of how power and caching is taken care of on the iPod. Small files is one thing. But the spin up and down of the iPod can make backups unreliable if done of a system as a whole.

  • Can I use my 160GB iPod as an external hard drive for my mp3s???

    Hello.
Just wondering this. I have a little over 52GB of empty space on my iPod and only 16GB left on my iMac where I store all of my mp3s on iTunes. Is there anyway I can keep my iPod the same and not be affected if I where to delete albums from my iTunes???
Any insights and opinions is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you *Manually Manage* your iPod (by selecting that option on the Summary screen) you can delete MP3s from you computer without removing them from your iPod.
However, this is not recommended because if you have to Restore you iPod you will have to manually re-load everything. Also, if you lose, drop or replace it, or it is stolen, then you will lose those files also.
The iPod is subjected to all sorts of abuse (listed above) so it is risky to have those music files only on your iPod.

  • Can I use my old g5 tower as a scratch disk for my Macbook Pro for Photoshop?

I just made the laptop jump away from towers and am a little shocked by how much difference a smaller scratch disk makes. Can I use my old tower as a scratch disk to help out my new Macbook Pro?
Any other tweaks I can do to speed up large files in Photoshop? Should I bump up the ram usage by Photoshop above the recommened percentage?

Hm. It sounds like you know what you are talking about, and apparently I don't. I was just going to plug in a firewire cable to both and hoped that magically scratch disk would appear as an option for my tower.
Cant I somehow boot the tower as using as a hardrive only? Or applesharing or something else?

  • How to use old Time Capsule als external disk

I just bought a new 3TB TC. I want to use the old one as an external disk and I also have some files on there I want to use. the new 3TBTC connected nicely, but the old TC on ethernet cable is not recognized by Mac Pro.
How do i connect the old TC to Mac Pro to use as occasional external disk?
    thanx
    Frank

Factory reset the old TC.. plug it by ethernet into the network.. straight into the new TC is the obvious place.
The Mac should then be able to find it.. if not I can suggest how to do it manually in full isolation from the network.

  • Can my husband use my old iPod since I have a new one?

I got a new Nano and my husband would like to use my old iPod. How can he do this with his Mac (he currently has a Shuffle and would like to "upgrade"). Someone told me I have to connect my old one to my iTunes library and delete the music.

Just plug it in. No need to delete anything.
It will ask if he wants to sync to the library on his computer. Just click Yes.
