Can i use my old ipod firewire power brick to charge my iphone?

i have a power brick from an old 20g b&w ipod. it looks like a laptop brick, but smaller. it has a FW socket and says it puts out 12v 67a.
i'm going on a trip and would like a spare charger. will this work for my iphone 3g or will it fry it?
thanks!
btw - i did a search on this topic and found similar threads, but none addressed this particular FW charger.

No, the iPhone 3G cannot be charged from a FireWire-based power source.

i'm getting a 404 error on that link for the ipod touch manual. but i looked at p.33 of the iphone user's guide, and it does say that you can't use a FW charger. it doesn't say why, however.
i see that the iphone charger is 5w/1a. what happens if you use a 12w/67a charger with a device that's configured for the former?
according to somebody in this thread, the device being powered "requests" only the power it needs, so you can use a more powerful charger (a MBP charger for a MB, for example) - but you can't use a less powerful charger to charge a device that needs more power (a MB charger for a MBP, for example).
(for instance, can you charge a macbook with a macbook pro brick - i know you can't do the reverse)

The iPod charger is only 5W.
    The iPad 2 needs a 10W charger.
It will charge slower and hotter.

Can i use my old IPOD dock with the new G5 IPOD?

That's really good to know. I thought because it was a different thickness you wouldn't be able to, and the dock adaptor that comes with the new iPods doesn't fit into the old Photo dock.
Do you know if you can use the charger that came with the old Photo iPods? You can plug straight into the power socket, but the cable that goes into the charger from the iPod is the firewire cable, so I was thinking maybe it wouldn't work, and I don't want to try it in case I short out my iPod or something!

  • Can I use my old iPOD as a external Disk

    Hello,
I have an old ipod Touchwheel (firewire) and I thought that it amy be useful as a form of external disk (10Gig).
Do you know if it is possible to use it as an external disk and also clear all the ipod software etc from the ipod so that i can utilise most of the 10Gbyte available?
    THanks
    John

    Hi John,
I don't think it can be used as an eternal disk but you can enable your iPod for hard disk use for storage.

  • TS2634 Can I use my old ipod camera connector with ipad [3]? I keep getting accessory not supported message

I have tried to use my old camera connector and it doesn't work. many posts indicate the new ones don't work either.  Anyone know if the USB camera connector would or should work with my ipad and my rebel T2i camera?  Would buying a new connector work?
    Thanks.

What do you mean by "old camera connector"? Do you mean the one that was put out years ago for the iPod? No, that doesn't work. The current Camera Connection Kit works just fine.

  • Faulty UK USB Power Brick/Wall Charger Drains iPhone Battery

I'm writing this post more from an informative perspective, rather than from a question seeking a response.
I have a genuine Apple UK USB wall charger which is at least 2 years old - it either came with my current iPhone 5 or old iPhone 4 from 4 years ago (both look identical).
Recently on charging my phone overnight, I've woken up (late - as the alarm consequently didn't work) to find that the power had drained from my phone rather than the expected charge happening. Having an old phone, I assumed it was the fault of the phone and booked it in for a genius bar visit. Being annoyed about the 1 week+ delay for the next genius bar appointment, I purchased a new iPhone to use temporarily for a week which would then be returned for a full refund on receipt of a replacement for mine.
On testing out the brand new iPhone with the charger, it appears that the same happens:
On plugging in the new phone to the charger once it has been fully charged (100%), within 5 minutes the charge in the phone has become 97%.
I'm guessing it is quite unusual for a USB brick to fail in this way - to actually drain the phone of charge?

I have the dock connector option for my factory stereo as well and am also seeing it drain the iPhone battery. What's odd is that it used to charge just fine.
Initially the iPhone wouldn't route audio through the dock connector in my vehicle. It would see that it was plugged in and gave the Airplane Mode prompt, but would only play audio from its internal speaker. It did, however, charge as expected. Then the iPhone software update 1.0.1 came out which solved the audio issue and allowed me to get the audio to my deck properly. I can't say for sure if it was still charging the iPhone at that point, but it definitely wasn't /draining/ it. Then, right around the time of the 1.0.2 update I started to notice significant drops in battery power when unplugging it after a drive to or from work (usually around 25 minutes). The audio still works fine, but the battery seems to drop at least 15-20% over that drive, whether I have any music playing or just have the iPhone idle but plugged in.
So, software problem, maybe? I have a hard time believing something suggendly changed with the dock connector in my vehicle...

  • Can i use and old ipod for time machine backups?

i've reformatted the ipod and enabled it for use as a hard drive. will it work with time machine? time machine doesn't seem to be recognizing it...

Generally I wouldn't rely on the iPod for backing up because of how power and caching is taken care of on the iPod. Small files is one thing. But the spin up and down of the iPod can make backups unreliable if done of a system as a whole.

  • Can I use my old iPod 3G dock with my new iPod Touch

I just got an iPod Touch, and I am wondering if there are any reason why I shouldn't use it with the old dock that came with my iPod 3G in 2004. It seems to sync and charge without any problem, but I'm wondering if it could cause physical damage because it's not designed to support that shape, or if there's any other potential issues. The iPod Touch came with an adapter, but it doesn't fit my ancient dock.

I do not understand why a 2G Touch would not charge from an AC connector. I am charging mine with the AC connector which came with my iPod Photo. That may have been the last iPod to include the charger with the device. But yes, it charges the Touch just fine. However, my Bose dock does not work with the Touch at all. I understand that it would not be able to charge it, but I can't even play through it. Two other docks I have are the same EXCEPT that both of them have an auxilliary input and I can play the Touch through a cord going into that input, lying down of course, not in its dock.

  • Using iPod mini Power Adapter to charge iPod 5G ???

    Hi!
I got my new iPod 5G. Now I'd like to use the old iPod mini power adapter. It got a Firewire connection. Does it work? Or do I destroy my new iPod???
    Thanks a lot!

The power adapters can be used with any iPod or iPod Nano, they aren't model specific. A 5th Generation iPod can be charged by Firewire, it just can't use a Firewire cable to update. Updating of any iPod after the 4th Generation or the Mini can only be done via USB.

  • Can I use my old charging cube purchased with and iPod Photo that has international plugs to charge my iPhone 4S?

I have an old charging cube that I purchased with my iPod Photo several years ago.  It has various adapter plugs to use in other countries some of which have 220 volts.  In the USA we use 110 volts.
Can I use the old cube with the proper plug to charge my iPhone 4S in Israel?
    Thanks in advance.

    The power will be okay.
If the dock cannot take adapters, I strongly advise you to not use the dock (if you want to keep it), without creating support for the iPhone. It will break; had this happen to an iHome with my 5th gen iPod, due to the lack of accessories to support the new iPod profile.

  • Can my husband use my old iPod since I have a new one?

I got a new Nano and my husband would like to use my old iPod. How can he do this with his Mac (he currently has a Shuffle and would like to "upgrade"). Someone told me I have to connect my old one to my iTunes library and delete the music.

Just plug it in. No need to delete anything.
It will ask if he wants to sync to the library on his computer. Just click Yes.
