Can I use my PBook as a display only?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me out please?
I have a PBook 667 (Gbit) which is slow as can be. My Powermac, however, is a Dual 450 with more RAM, and is lots faster. I've tried tons of was of speeding up the PBook, and I can't afford any more memory right now (who hasn't been hit by the economy, eh?).
Anyway, I was wondering if it's possible to use the tower but run it through the Powerbooks's LCD screen.
The reason for this is a physical disability which means it's much easier for me to have the machine on my chest or lap, rather than me being hunched over a desk, which really is not an option for me right now.
I know it's a weird one, but I thought this would be the place to ask.
Really appreciate any help -- thank you!
Pascal

Hi, Pascal. Have a look at ScreenRecycler and see whether it would meet your need.

    I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

    As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

    It is quite safe to use the higher powered iPad charger for other devices, as they will only use the amount of power required for charging, eventhough higher power is available. The Apple store shows all devices that can be safely charged with the iPad charger, see the link below.

    Can i use FCP in 13inch Retina display laptop.
    Hi guys, i have purchased a new mac pro retina disply
    8Gb Ram
    128 Gb flash storage.
    i can use fcp in this or what else is required for fcp.

    About all you can do is google the old specs and look for a copy on Amazon. You said you just purchased the MBP. You do have 2 weeks from the date of purchase to return it and buy a different model if that helps.

  • Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

    Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a  windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

    Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm?  I don't know too much about this stuff.  My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
    Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.

  • Can I use my iMac as a 'display' for my MacBook Pro?

    Hi all, I am really hoping someone can help me here.
    I am wondering if I can use my 24" iMac as a display for my MacBook Pro (both running Snow Leopard).
    It's my father's 80th birthday party in about 24 hours time. I am doing up the music and slideshow (thanks Apple - so easy!).
    My plan was to simply take my iMac and use it. However, I managed to drop the wireless keyboard (darn those dogs) and now my keyboard won't work. I have no backup keyboards here (gave the wired one to Dad to use with his Mac mini). I live in a country area with no access to a Mac store and it will take more than 24 hours to get a new one. Went to my local 'other computer' general store last night: I really don't want to buy an ugly black keyboard..... I have just had a great idea:
    Can I network my MacBook Pro and use it as the source for the slide show and simply use the iMac as a display? I have plenty of DVI adaptors but am just not sure how I would go about the software side of things? Or should I simply buy an ugly PC keyboard (and if I do, will the WIndows button work as an Apple button???)
    Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
    Thanks!

    The imac 24 can't be used as a monitor over a DVI connection or the like, Suzanne, but you may be able to achieve what you want to using "Screen Sharing" by networking the two computers. This lets your MBP effectively control what is running on the iMac.
    See HERE for the basic setup. For information about how to access the "shareable" screen from the MBP see HERE.
    One possible problem may be actually getting this set-up on the iMac if it is not already enabled, however, unless you can borrow a keyboard from someone (your password may have to be entered to enable it). You may be able to get around this, if necessary, using the "keyboard viewer" (which you can place in the menubar using System preferences > Keyboard, if you don't already have it there).
    Cheers
    Rod

  • How can I use WiFi to mirror my Display on my TV?

    Sometimes I would like to use my HDTV as a display to mirror what is on my desktop's or laptops screen's, running 10.6.8. I can do this wired without problems either using an HDMI or VGA input. But it's not convenient
    Is their anyway to do this with WiFI/Airport? It would seem one would only need a WiFi receiver and conversion hardware on the TV.
    I don't want to just stream media, like with Apple TV, but want to mirror what ever is happing on my computer screen.
    ALL suggestions are appreciated
    TIA,
    Bill

    No.
    iCloud and PhotoStream merely "push" you iOS photos to your other devices.

  • Can I use my iMac as a display for a Dell laptop?

    I have a 27" 2011 imac that I would like to use periodically as a monitor for my Dell Latitude E7240. Can I do this? Thank you.

    I don't use windows or have access to a pc with DisplayPort output to test.
    From what I can find on the subject, the iMac can be used as a monitor with some game consoles and pc's that have the correct DisplayPort protocol.

  • Can I use the iPhone as a display or monitor?

    I would like to be able to connect an external camera to my iPhone and have the image displayed on the iPhones display.  I don't know of any application out that do this.  My question is really more of is it possible to do this if I write an application for it.
    Does the iOS frameworks and tools available for developers provide a way to access the iPhone display to show an image coming from an external device?
    Thanks for your help,
    TSoles

    Hellboy254,
    Again I think this is using some wireless connection to use the iPhone as an alternate display.
    What I really am attempting to do is generally the same thing that the Camera icon (software) is doing on the iPhone but I want to use an external connected camera to hijack, temporarily, the display.  There must be some communication taking place between the built in camera and the display in the standard Camera software.  Can I use those same principals (frameworks) to display the image from an external camera?
    Thanks,
    tsoles

  • How can i use both speakers with 2 displays

    i am using 2 27" displays with my powermac but the sound only comes out of one.  does anyone know how i can have the sound come from both display?
    also, does anyone know how i can control which camera is being accessed by iphoto.
    thanks.

    For the audio you most likely need to use Audio MIDI Setup (in your Utilities folder) and create an "Aggregate Device".  This doc might help.
    I don't have an answer for the camera question.

  • How can I use the same thread to display time in both JPanel & status bar

    Hi everyone!
    I'd like to ask for some assistance regarding the use of threads. I currently have an application that displays the current time, date & day on three separate JLabels on a JPanel by means of a thread class that I created and it's working fine.
    I wonder how would I be able to use the same thread in displaying the current time, date & day in the status bar of my JFrame. I'd like to be able to display the date & time in the JPanel and JFrame synchronously. I am developing my application in Netbeans 4.1 so I was able to add a status bar in just a few clicks and codes.
    I hope somebody would be able to help me on this one. A simple sample code would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    As you're using Swing, using threads directly just for this kind of purpose would be silly. You might as well use javax.swing.Timer, which has done a lot of the work for you already.
    You would do it something like this...
        ActionListener timerUpdater = new ActionListener() {
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt) {
                // DateFormat would be better, but this is an example.
                String timeString = new Date().toString();
                statusBar.setText(timeString);
                someOtherLabel.setText(timeString);
        new Timer(1000, timerUpdater).start();That code will update the time once a second. If you aren't going to display seconds, you might as well increase the delay.
    The advantage of using a timer over using an explicit thread, is that multiple Swing timers will share a single thread. This way you don't blow out your thread count. :-)

  • Can I use my tv as a display for my macbook air?

    If i I bought Apple tv and plugged it into my tv, could i then use that tv as a display for my macbook air as if my tv were a mac display?
         I have a macbook air but I dont want to buy a whole new display for it which is why i want to use my tv.

    I am currently running snow leopard, but will update in a heartbeat to lion if needed.

    Connect the Macbook directly through the TV using a Mini Display Port to HDMI ('With Audio' if needed).
