Subject:

Hi Bob,
Just go back to this issue. Maybe I have not explained my config correctly.
I have Speedtouch router for Internet access connected to a soho switch with 8 ethernet connections on the ground floor. To this switch there are wired 7 Microsoft devices including PCs on both the ground and first floor) and an airport express Wi-fi hot spot (first floor) . My Macbook is wirelessly connected to the AE for Internet access . An HP printer is also connected to the AE.
I would now like to set up the TC as a wifi back up disk for  the Macbook using Time machine.
Should I a) replace the AE with the TC  or b) can I set TC up seperately ?
If a) can I use the same network Id and password for TC as I had for the AE or do I need to use new ID and password for it?
If b) is there a risk of interference between the TC and AE ?
Probably a) is the best solution as I dont really need the AE if The tC will give me greater functionality but I would like your confirmation of this
thanks
Yvonne

Yes, it will work fine.. at least until the disk starts to fill up, then the expanding size of the sparsebundle can cause issues with the files from windows.. Pondini has made note of the issues..
    http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html
but I have to admit to doing precisely what you are talking about without problems.. as long as you maintain space.. plenty of space. Time Machine is eventually designed to use up all space on the TC.
You cannot partition the TC drive without opening the TC and breaking warranty.. but you can create a disk image and put your windows backups inside it.. that might help to prevent issues.

  • Time Capsule as iTunes Server backed up to another Time Capsule

    Riddle me this:
If I had a Time Capsule that I was using as an iTunes Server, could I back the contents of that Time Capsule to a 2nd Time Capsule via Time Machine?

    Again, thank you very much.
My current TC is 500GBs, not big enough for its current job of backing my my Macbook, which has a 500GB hard drive.
This is why I was considering buying a new TC for backups and using my old TC as a hard drive for iTunes. The Apple sales rep. said this was possible. Everything I've read says that it's not.
That much is possible (but expensive). Backing-up one TC to another isn't.
An Apple genius at my local store recommended (today) I upgrade the hard drive in my Macbook to a 1TB drive and buy a less expensive hard drive and daisy chain it to my TC.
I'm not sure what he means by "daisy chain." You can connect a USB drive to a Mac or a TC, but not both at once. You can move it from one to the other periodically, but if you do that a lot, you may damage the tiny pins in the ports or cables.
It would seem that both options would cost about the same. What would you recommend?
A larger HD in your MacBook probably makes sense if you're going to keep it for a while. If you want to keep the music there, you'd always have access to it, of course; and it will be backed-up; and you could share it over your network with the AppleTV.
Connecting a USB drive to your TC and backing-up to it, instead of the TC's internal HD, also makes sense. You can copy the existing backups from the TC to the USB drive, and continue backing-up to them, if you want. It takes a while, but can be done. See #18 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
Once you do that, you could erase the TC's internal HD and put your music on it, instead of keeping it on your Mac. Then your only problem is backing-it up.
There is a facility that will "archive" the TC's HD to a connected USB drive; it has it's downsides, but would work, even to a separate partition on the USB drive. See [Time Capsule: Using AirPort Utility 5.3.1 or later to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281]. Chronosync might be able to do that better.

  • I just purchased a 3TB Time Capsule.  I live in Italy and have 220V power.  The Time Capsule is rated for that, but the cord says 125V.  Can I use this cord with an adapter, or do I need to buy a new cord at an Italian store?

Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket.

Time Capsule only works for one device at a time, how to make it capable to be used for multiple devices at times.
Please help to set it up, thanks in advance

You need to give more info..
Firstly only works for what.. networking.. backup.. wireless. You need more nouns.. more adjectives... describe what you want and what fails.. then we can figure out why.
Most likely you have bridged it when it should be in router mode..
Most likely you are using Lion or ML which has the airport utility bridge the TC by default.
Change it to working as a router. That might help.
If you press reset button it will default back to router btw.
If you are on Lion.. use a real utility. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1547

  • Can you use two Time Capsules and back up both with Time Machine.

My little iMac hard drive (250GB) is quickly filling up with my iTunes library (180GB). I have a 500GB Time Capsule which I use to back up my system via Time Capsule. I would like to move my iTunes library to an external hard drive. If I add the 1TB Time Capsule and use it as my main system back up and wireless router can I use my 500GB Time Capsule as an external drive to locate my iTunes library? Will I be able to back up both my iMac HD and the 500GB Time Capsule to the 1TB Time Capsule using Time Machine or some other method?
Finally if I can do this can I have both Time Capsules running wireless?

Could I simply make a copy and move it between the two Time Capsule on a routine basis say every two weeks or month?
    Yes
I know I will have to "point" or "map" the new location of my iTunes library to the external hard drive/2nd Time Capsule. Once that is done wouldn't Time Machine then just find the location and back it up along with all the data on the iMac hard drive?
Since this Time Capsule would be connected wirelessly or via Ethernet to your Mac, it would appear as a network drive. Time Machine will not back up data FROM a network drive. Therefore Time Machine will not back up data on this other Time Capsule.

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

  • Can we share our photos in the family on different mac´s with Time Capsule?

Can we share our photos in the family on different mac´s with Time Capsule?

It depends on the size and number of photos you are sharing around.
Nothing wrong with putting a copy of the photos on the TC if that works for you. Each person can access the photo just fine like that.
I am not saying don't.. just beware of the risks so do it prudently..
But if the library is too large, you will steal space on the TC that should be used for backups.. if all the computers in the network are backing up to it, don't use too much of the spare space.
Better to buy a firewire drive (or USB but firewire 800 are much faster) and connect it to a computer that is regularly turned on. Share that drive to the network. It will then also be backed up correctly to the TC although again be careful of the amount of files, and still keep a straight copy backup somewhere else.
I am recent convert so workflow on the Mac is not my forte.. so perhaps some of the wiser heads can also drop in and post a reply.

  • I have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule. Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh? Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?

    Hi,
I  have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule.
    a) Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh?
    b) Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?
    Thanks,
    Paul

You may not need to buy a new Time Capsule.
You can connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, and use it in addition to the TC's internal HD.  You may need a powered USB hub as well.
Exactly what is on your TC?  If it's only Time Machine backups, you may not need to do anything -- Time Machine will delete the oldest backup(s) automatically when it needs room for new ones.  But if you have more than about 250 GB on your internal HD, that 500 GB may not be large enough to keep backups long enough.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, besides your backups, you could back up to the external HD and use the internal for the other data, or vice-versa.  But TM backups cannot "span" two drives, and you shouldn't mix backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.

  • How can I be sure that the back up to my time capsule has backed everything up as when I enter time capsule and interogate the back ups i can't identify individual music or picture files?

How can I confirm that the back up to my time capsule has backed everything up as when I enter time capsule and interrogate the backs ups I can't identify individual photo or music files?

You cannot browse a Time Machine backup with the Finder. To restore individual music files or any other files normally available in the Finder, open your Music folder then "Enter Time Machine" using the Time Machine icon.
Restoring individual photographs is slightly more cumbersome. Apple recommends restoring the entire iPhoto Library, but if you want to locate an individual photograph you could use Time Machine to restore the old Libary. Restore it to an alternate location to avoid overwriting your existing one. Open iPhoto while holding an Option key, open the restored Library, find the photo you need and export it, close iPhoto, re-open it with your usual Library, and import the photo.
Time Machine depends upon a number of sound engineering principles for reliable operation, one of which is "faith"
Your files will remain intact until your Time Machine backup device becomes inoperative.

  • HT1178 Can I install Time Capsule strictly as a back-up to my local devices?

Can I install Time Capsule strictly as a back-up to my Windows laptop and Apple devices without using it as an Airport Extreme Base Station? I do not want to use my Time Capsule as my access to the Internet, just as a back-up. I have U-verse voice and data services and am using their wireless router to connect to the Internet.

    You are asking multiple questions..
The setup of the TC can have a whole bunch of variations. If you followed the instructions to plug in by ethernet and turn off wireless, then all connection is via the uverse modem router.
    TerrenceV wrote:
Thank you.  Since I am not using my TC to connect to the Internet - I have U-verse, so I installed AT&T's wireless router - it was recommended that I put the TC into bridge mode and connect it to the router using the ethernet.  Without wireless, how do I send my backups to the TC?
If you don't use wireless then you use ethernet.. it can be plugged into either the uverse router or the TC..makes no difference.
Should I disconnect the ethernet, re-establish wireless, and let all my Apple and Windows 7 devices use their active wireless connections to backup to the TC?  If so, how do I direct the backups to TC?  I have Airport installed on my Windows 7 primary computer.  Again, thanks for the help.
Why do you want to use wireless if you have ethernet? Ethernet is much better and faster.
If ethernet is not available you can use wireless.. if you turned off wireless in the TC.. then all connections will be via the uverse .. TC .. nothing wrong with that.
If you leave the TC wireless on.. then you can connect to TC instead and use TC. That is also fine.. makes no difference .. use what works.
I think you need to play some more.. you questions show you are not understanding the fundamentals..
In bridge the TC is a dumb hard drive.. plus switch.. plus wireless AP.
Plugged into the uverse router.. it is like the uverse router now has more switch ports.. a secondary wireless AP and a hard disk.. they are effectively one unit. Any connection to uverse is connection to TC.. any connection to TC is connection to uverse..

  • Can time capsule be configured to back up mixed pc mac networks?

Can time capsule be configured to back up mixed mac/pc networks?

That may work, but there are complications to putting Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details and some workarounds.

  • Can you use SQL as a data source for a project in the same way you can in Excel?

Excel allows you to create a data source that executes a SQL stored procedure, display that data as a table in a spreadsheet and have that data automatically refresh each time you open the spreadsheet. Is it possible to do the same thing in MS Project, displaying
the data from the stored procedure as a series of tasks?
Here's what I'm trying to do - I have a stored procedure that pulls task data meeting a specific criteria from all projects in Project Server. We're currently displaying this data as an Excel report. However, the data includes start dates and durations so
it would be nice to be able to display it as a Gantt Chart. I've played around with creating a Gantt chart in Excel and have been able to do a very basic one, but it doesn’t quite fit our needs.

No, You can not use sql as a data source for a project.
You have 3 options to achieve it:
    1. You can create a Sharepoint list with desired column ,fill desired data in that list then you can create a MS project from Sharepoint List.
    2. You can create a SSRS report in which you can display grantt chart Joe has given you that link.
    3. You can write a macro in MPP which will take data from your excel. In excel you will fetch data from your stored procedure. write a schedule which will run every day to update your data or
create an excel report in which will update automatically and write macro in mpp which will fetch the data then publish it so that it would be available to team members.
