Can I use new install disks for older computer?

I have a new MBP (which I'm very excited about!). I am going to pass my two-year old MBP to one of my college kids. I would like to wipe it clean as he will be transferring all of his own info onto it from his current MBP (which will then be passed down to another college kid). I can't find the original install disk. Can I use the ones that came with the new machine?

No. The install disks are specific to the model they ship with.
I've read that a Retail copy of Snow Leopard will allow you to essentially do a 'fresh' install of the OS, but it does not include the diagnostics and configuration features of your original system disks.
You can call Apple and order a replacement set of disks for a nominal charge (around $40, I think I've read.) Since you're keeping it in the family, that would be an important thing to have with the Mac in case you cannot locate the originals.

  • Can I use the install disk on two computers?

I haven't actually installed it on my computer yet, I just allowed whatever was going to install itself to come up. If I have another computer, can I use the install disk to put OSX on there or not? If so, can I still use it in case I need a backup load of my computer?

Only if you get a family pack license newer than the installer disk which came with the computer(s) can you install it on multiple computers. Check your license agreement.
You can't use the disks which came with another computer on a second computer. These articles explain more along those lines:

  • Where can I download the install disk for powerbook G4

I recently replaced my hardrive because mine stopped working. Now I have found that somewhere along the line over the past 4-5 years I've lost the install disks for my powerbook. I was wondering how I could get my laptop back up and running by maybe downloading software from somewhere? I'm not super savy on computers, but I was told that I would be able to download the software from a site and then be able to start up and install the operating system from my imac. Is this correct, and if yes then how?
    Much appreciated

  • Can i use new ipad charger for ipad 2 and vise versa

I have ipad 2 and i bought new ipad for my dad. Both ipads charge quickly with ipad2 charger as compare to new ipad charger.
So, my question is.. Is it okay to use new ipad charger for ipad 2 and vise versa...???

The iPad 1, iPad 2 and new iPad all use the same 10W charger.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Also look at The iPad's charging challenge explained http://www.macworld.com/article/1150356/ipadcharging.html

  • How can I make an install disk for iTunes?

I need to update iTunes but I cannot get the download to complete. The connection has been confirmed as stable so it doesn't appear to be a system issue. If I make an install disk for the current version of iTunes on another PC, I should be able to install it. The download doesn't give options to save to a disk. How should I go about this?

The download doesn't give options to save to a disk
Go to the following webpage and click the "Download" button, and then click the "Save" button:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
... once the iTunesSetup.exe (installer) file has downloaded, then copy the iTunesSetup.exe file across to your CD (or even a large-enough thumb drive or something similar). Copy the iTunesSetup to your PC from the CD or thumb, and start the install by doubleclicking on the file.

  • I have a late-2008 macbook that is running 10.5.8. I also have a newer macbook that came with snow leopard. Can I use the install disk that came with the newer macbook to update my older macbook?

Also, when upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard, will I lose all the data that is currently on my hard drive?

No, that SL disk is meant for the computer it came with only.
Upgrading to SL generally will not cause data loss, but you should have a backup of your important files in any case.
You can get a Snow Leopard disk by calling Apple - in the USA it's 800-MY-APPLE.
    Best of luck.

can i use the xp recovery disks from the xp laptop
to downgrade the vista to xp  or is it better to install windows 7 please

    Hi:
You can probably downgrade your Vista notebook to XP, but you don't have a license (downgrade rights) to do that from Microsoft.
Normally, only business notebooks and desktops were given downgrade rights to XP due to the risk of companies operations grinding to a halt because of software incompatiblities with some programs and Vista.
Personally, it would be better anyway to move on up to Windows 7.
Since your notebook came with Vista, it can run Windows 7. For any missing drivers you may have you can normally use the Vista drivers on your notebook's support and driver page.
Additionally, you may want to read through this dv2000 upgrade guide for Windows 7.

  • Can I use Dell install disk containing Windows for Bootcamp & Mac?

The only Windows disk I have is what came on the Dell install disk with the Dell PC. Can I use this copy of Windows after I perform the BootCamp division? I have one small prgm (PC only) and need to figure out a cost effective way. Can I mess up BootCamp or the division easily? I've been warned that it can be tricky dividing up the hard drive. Is this true?

    Hi Donna,
for PC-to-Mac switcher Apple provides a great tutorial with Switch101 http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/ and of course Mac101 http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/
I used both when I made the switch myself 3 years ago.
Microsoft has a so-called runtime version of Access, which can be used if the complete Access program is not needed to run a Database file.
Seems like the program you use comes with this runtime file, so you don't have to use/buy Office.
Since VirtualBox is an OSX application and the installation of Windows is done inside VirtualBox, your OSX system/computer is in no danger, when you try it.
But with all Windows computer, you might consider using a Anti-Virus program when running Windows, regardless whether you use the Internet with Windows or not.
Just the fact that you are im-/export files from/to Windows computer can be harmful, if these files are infected.
    AVG has a good freeware AV-Scanner http://www.avg.de/us.product-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
    Take care

  • Upgrading From Final Cut Pro 5 to 6 - can you use full install disk?

    Hi,
I have one MacBook Pro running Final Cut 6 (with Final Cut Studio 2), and another one running Final Cut Pro 5 (with Final Cut Studio). We're looking to upgrade the second one to Final Cut Studio 2.
Does anyone know if the upgrade can be done with the disks from the full install box of Studio 2, using the product key from an upgrade? We happen to be in the middle of East Africa at the moment, so shipping is an issue...
    Thanks

You CAN install Final Cut Studio with only the upgrade disk set BUT you will need the product key for BOTH the Final Cut Studio 2 AND the previous version.
After you insert the Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade installation disk you will first be asked to input the product key for the upgrade version and then after you will be requested for the product key of the previous version.
After this, the installation process does NOT require any disks from the previous version of Final Cut Studio.

  • Can i use 1 external disk for TM with several Macs ?

    Hi,
is it possible to use 1 external disk with TM for several macs ?
Would it result in something like that in this case:
    Backups.backupdb -> Mac1
    Backups.backupdb -> Mac2
or am i forced to have a single TM disk for each mac ?
    best regards
    fidel

    Hi,
thank you both for the quick reply.
The partition idea is not that bad, but as i am not using TM to do a full-backup, nor do i run it daily the disk-usage is not that important for me.
Till now i have done about 15 backups on my mac pro and the data is < 30 gb
    (based on the excludes)
basicly i want to use TM only for the case that i need to reinstall Leopard (cause of a broken hd or similar) as i assume that i can use the TM-data in this case.
the idea to setup TM for restoring deleted files is nice, but i dont really see a reason in my case
    best regards

  • Can I use same recovery disk for two identical computers?

I own two PCs, model m8034n, which were identical when I bought them. If I order a Windows Vista recovery disk for one of them (specifying the serial number when I order), will I be able to use it to restore the other computer to its factory condition?

I imagine as long as the Vista versions are the same on both computers it would be OK to use it.  No guarantee it will work but you may try.

    Is this possible to do?

Bob, Thanks for the info. I have read different articles that said yes, but I wanted to make sure before I commit to buy. I have an older A1084 which I could not use the Ethernet port. I know at one point I was able to when I was on 10.4. Now that I am on an Intel processor and 10.8 I am going to have to upgrade some of my Apple wireless hardware.
    Thanks Again.

  • Can't boot from Install Disk for Leopard

I purchased the new xeon core dual which only boots in Leopard. I need to put Leopard on an external drive, so I purchased Leopard and tried to install it on an external drive. My computer starts to read the disk but before it even gets to the blue screen, it stops, scrolls down in a dark gray screen and says I need to restart by holding the power button down. The screen kind of looks like a kernal panic with oriental writing under the english.
I have tried by restarting and holding down the "c" key with no luck. I tried again with holding down the "option" key and when the hard drive and disk show up as choices. I chose the disk and still no luck. I disconnected all my external drives and tried again with no luck. I called tech support and they said it may be my optical drive. They set up an appointment with the genius bar at my local apple store. The genius listened to my drive and said there was nothing wrong with the drive and that it probably was a bad disk so they gave me a new one. Went home and tried with the new disk and same problem. Can anyone help?!! Thanks.

I purchased the new xeon core dual which only boots in Leopard.
I need to put Leopard on an external drive, so I purchased Leopard and tried to install it on an external drive.
There's your problem. Macs which ship with Leopard can't boot Leopard retail, unless it is newer than the Mac in question. Check the version of Leopard on the Leopard retail DVD you purchased in the second quote. If it is older than what was installed on your Mac Pro based on the Mac Pro install and restore DVD, then it won't work on your Mac Pro. If you want Leopard of the Mac Pro to be backed up to be an emergency boot volume for the Mac Pro on the external drive, use a cloning software*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Or follow these directions to backup your Mac Pro DVD*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/bootcd.html
If you need an emergency Leopard volume for another Mac, install it directly from that other Mac. If that other Mac lacks a DVD drive, get a Firewire DVD drive to do it.
