Can i use SDXC card as an external hard drive?

I have a mid 2011 macbook air with 4GB of space. I have to constantly delete things off of my mac because i do not have enough space. I see that i have a SDXC card slot on my macbook i was wondering could i buy a 32gb SDXC card and use it like an external hard drive so i wouldn't have to keep worrying about space on my macbook?

I think you are confused. Your 4 GBs of space refers to your RAM or memory. Your SSD is not the same. If you only have 4 GBs left on it, then you need to start transferring data to an external drive. An SDXC card is storage space like the SSD or a hard drive. It does not expand RAM.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
  1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
  2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
  3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
  4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
  5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
  6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

Not plugged in by USB if that is what you were thinking.
You can store files on the TC but you should NOT.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.

  • Can you use your iPod as an external hard drive?

Sorry if this has been posted before . . .
I have a 160GB iPod and like with most people, my iPod is larger than my laptop and subsequently I am running out of free space on my laptop due to all the movies and music.
I’m not so worried about the music, but I would like to remove the burnt movies from my laptop, but leave them on my iPod. Is there any way of using the iPod like an external hard drive? If I delete the movies from my laptop – the iPod tries to Sync and I lose everything?
    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks Chris,
When I use iTunes through the normal sync window
    Devices > Ipod > movies
and select ‘Sync - selected movies’ and tick the ones to sync it removes the un-ticked items from my iPod. If I tick all of them and sync (and the movie has been removed from my hard-drive) it brings up an error message saying ‘the movie or data file cannot be found’.
I would be happy to use iTunes to store the movies, but I think I am missing a step.
    Appreciate the help,

  • Can I use my iMac as an external hard drive?

My iMac monitor recently gave out. The CPU is working fine (according to a diagnostic test). Rather than investing in a new monitor, I plan on getting a new Intel based iMac. Can I use my old base as an external hard drive and how do I boot it up as a hard drive? Thanks.

    An Apple Support database article:
"How to use FireWire target disk mode"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
This has specific details on how to use FW TDM.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can I Use Disk Utility from an External Hard Drive?

I would like to use Disk Utility to verify and/or repair my hard drive. I am too lazy to run this from my install disk. Can I merely copy the application to my external hard drive and launch it from there? Would this work successfully? Could it damage anything? Thanks!

Hi! You can't repair a disk that you are booted from so you could run the repair disk function IF you are booted from another volume such as a bootable internal or external drive or the install disc. You'll have to clone your boot drive and repair from the clone after booting to it. Tom

  • Can I use NTFS format on an external hard drive?

    Hello all,
I have a Western Digital MyBook 2.0 500GB External Hard Drive that is formatted in fat32 format. The problem is, the files I wanted to back up are all 6-8GB dmg's and fat32 only supports the transfer of files up to 4GB (more like 3.75 in reality...).
Can I reformat the drive to NTFS and still be able to use it on my Mac?
If so, is there a particular way to do so that anyone can recommend?
Or, is there another format that is out there that allows larger file transfers than 4GB and is still Mac-friendly?

I don't need to use it with a PC at all, thankfully I've ditched every remnant of PC's in my life...
    Except for my Xbox 360
So, reformatting to OS Extended (Journaled) will allow me to transfer files that are about 7GB?

  • 1. Can I use Time Capsule as an external hard drive, remove wifi feature?

    Hi there -
My Time Capsule contains my iPhoto library, and I had used it in the past as my wifi router, backup AND external hard drive for the iPhoto library. Now I must use AT&T's wireless router, and would still like to use the TC for the backup and iPhoto library storage.  Is there a way to do that?
Also, the Apple deviced prefer to connect to Time Capsule (which is no longer connected to the internet) as their first choice for the wifi internet connection. Is there a way to change that preference?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Only one setting needs to be checked to make sure that the Time Capsule will connect to your ATT router correctly.
To do that, you need to use AirPort Utility, but we do not know what version that you might have. Please open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Utility menu, and then click About AirPort Utility and post back with the version number that you see there.
My Time Capsule contains my iPhoto library, and I had used it in the past as my wifi router, backup AND external hard drive for the iPhoto library.
Sorry, maybe I do not understand this. If you have your "main" iPhoto library on the Time Capsule, you cannot also have the backup of the iPhoto library on the same Time Capsule.  What would happen when.....not if.....the Time Capsule fails?
For the record, the experts in the iPhoto support area strongly recommend that you do not locate your main iPhoto library on the Time Capsule.....but that is probably another discussion and post in the iPhoto support community.
Also, the Apple deviced prefer to connect to Time Capsule (which is no longer connected to the internet) as their first choice for the wifi internet connection. Is there a way to change that preference?
The Time Capsule will be connected to the Internet when it is configured correctly to connect your ATT router, so your devices can continue to use the Time Capsule wireless if you want.
Or, are you saying that you want to turn off the wireless function on the Time Capsule and use the ATT wireless?
The Time Capsule will run circles around the ATT router as far as wireless performance, but you may have your reasons for wanting to use the ATT wireless.
Please clarify on what it is that want to do.

  • Can you use Time Capsule as an external hard drive?

I want to use it as both a back-up drive and an external hardrive for movies etc that I dont want to keep on my Mac so I can have more free space. I was just wondering if this is possible with this device or if I need a separate portable hard drive/external hard drive to do this.

I have an external HDD that I use for backups once in a while, BUT to be honest with you I last backed up my iTunes stuff (around 30K songs) over a year ago. Maybe it is time for another backup.
In all fairness, the whole time I have been using Mac's (since 2001) I have never had a major crash (knock on wood) so it has not been high on my priority list tbh. This said, how Apple have been acting lately I feel they have become a little too big for them selves and I have started to notice errors here and there, something that was unheard of earlier
Anyway, in most cases it is never the HDD that causes problems and extracting data from these are not a major hinder so I'm good...
EDIT: Oh, maybe I misunderstood the question

  • Can I use old time machine as external hard drive

I just bought the new 2 TB time machine, and I have an old 2 TB time machine.  Can I use the old TM as an external hard drive?  If so,  do I just use a usb cable to connect it to my computer?  Thanks for help.

You cannot use it by USB..
You can use it via the network.. bridge the old TC and plug it by ethernet into the new one.
You can then access it and use it via network the same as the new TC.

  • Can you use TC as just an external hard drive

Can a TC be set up as just an external hard drive?

Yes, as long as you use ethernet or wireless.. not USB.
Then you do have some setup issues. Because for instance if you use ethernet for network, it is much better to put the TC onto the network.. just use bridge modem.. or you can use wireless.. but it is hard to use the same service for both internet and the TC connection if they are separate.
Beaten by Bob.. BBB.. second time this week.. (in Maxwell Smart voice).
Good point he makes.. you can use a straight external disk at half the price. USB direct to the computer is much faster than wireless and not that much slower than ethernet. Maybe even same.

  • Can I use time capsule as and external hard drive ? how ?

I would like to now if I can use my time capsule not juste to back up my mac book pro but also has a external hard drive.
I tried to add a folder in time capsule but it dosen't let me do it ????
    Please help

I was just wondering if it was possible to the TC disk seperate in 2. One for backing up my cumputer and one for storing my movie and musique.
If yes, can I watch a movie from my TC ???

  • Can I use time capsule as an external hard drive

I have a MacBook Pro that came loaded with 500Gb storage and I had another 750Gb storage added and the disc drive removed.  I have now filled both HD's and want to move the data to an external device.  I have a 2TB Time Capsule just sitting here doing nothing at the moment but am wondering if I can just use it as an external HD instead of just backup?  Also, I don't want to backup/sore anyone else's info and we are already running a wireless network in the house that I don't want to itnerfear with...

It is possible to use the TC as a file store albeit a very unsafe one..
If you off load files you will not want to use Time Machine. Either just directly copy the files or use another backup utility.
The reason I say the TC is unsafe,, once you copy the files to the TC. and then delete them from your computer.. you have no backup.. the TC is a backup device NOT a file store. It has only the most primitive backup, via USB connected drive, to manually do a full backup of the TC. In terms of reliability.. TC are very prone to failure after 2years.. they are sealed and no parts are made available.. In Apple's understanding it is a consumable.. when it breaks, buy a new one.. it only has backups on it not your only source of files.
Having said all that,, if you are prepared to use a USB drive and setup some sort of backup software on a computer it can be used. It is slow.. it is dumb.. ie it has no servers other than basic network file serving.. and you should not then use it as Time Machine target at all.. as you will have 1.2TB of files sitting on it.

  • Can i use time capsule as an external hard drive and stream stuff?

hey i am thinking of purchasing a 2TB time capsule because its soo annoying getting stuff from my external putting them onto my mac then putting them into itunes then streaming them from my itunes to my xbox, is their no way i can just put all my films and music onto the time capsule and stream them to my xbox and macbook without all the wires and hassle, i am also wondering if i could do this would i be able to stream music from the time capsule (external harddrive) to my iphone. The main reason why i would like to know this is because my mac is only 150Gb and i have over a 1TB of films would be soo much easier if someone could give me some answers thank you

    Here's my set up:
Mac only>TC is my main router>wired with Cat 6 ethernet cable>set up for wireless also.
My other Macs wired or wireless can detect the 500 gig hard drive so I use it as storage and sync it to my Apple TV for movie watching.
You can do this on PC.

  • Can I use time capsule as an external hard drive as well as a back up?

    Hi
I have a Macbook air and a 3TB Time Capsule.
Can I use this as a hard drive (media storage) as well as for back up?
    Thanks

People do, but it's not a good idea.  There's conflicting needs between Time Machine and other uses for the drive.
The #1 reason why it isn't a good idea is where are your media backups?
