Can i use seagate goflex 3tb external hard drive for 2010 27" imac internal hard drive replacment if i take it out of the goflex case.do i need to format it before installation due to it allready having goflex software on it from manufacturer.
i have 3tb seagate goflex external hard drive.its brand new in package.i took it out of case and deleted partitions that were created by manufacturer.so now i have 2800 gigs.its formatted ntfs.will it work for late 2010 27" imac internal hard drive replacement.i found a apple repair place that will charge me 50$ to swap drives for me assuming i have the drive.i will have to install leopard myself at this price.i dont want to have to pay for anything other than the swap.will this hard drive work with this format or do i need to format it differently.

Yes and no. You cannot connect the mini to your notebook and use its drive as if it were an external drive. But you can transfer data from your notebook to the mini and then burn the DVD. And, if you can set up a VNC (that's what Leopard screen sharing is) you could even control the mini from your notebook. Not as transparent a process as having an external burner. And, considering the low prices these days, if you really need to burn DVDs rather frequently, buying an inexpensive DVD burner is going to be more convenient.

Are you having trouble with the screws because you don't have the right screwdriver, or because you do have the right screwdriver but they're too tight to turn? Or another problem? Trying to understand exactly what the problem with the screws is.
I've taken the bottom off and it was pretty easy, with the correct size screwdriver.
You could force open the bottom, but you'd guarantee that you'd never get it back on, and that would be a bad way to use a laptop. -
Since installing Mountain Lion, Time Machine says says that my Free Agent Goflex (Seagate) external 2gb drive cannot be used as it is read only. I tried disc utility to repair permissions but that block is greyed out. The disc verifies as being OKI What next?
Ok, I solved this problem! I ejected the drive and then disconnected it both from the power supply and the USB connector. I then reconnected everything and powered it up again and Then went into TM preferences and chose the drive as the backup. TM did a new backup (well over an hour) and now works as advertised.

I have a mackbook pro and an iMac if I buy a time capsule 2tb airport, I can use it with time machine and what would be the best way to use it.
There is no particular setup required for TM.. both computers will create their own backup sparsebundle which is like a virtual disk.. Pondini explains the whole thing if you read the reference I gave you.

Up to you.. you can plug the external drive into the TC and enjoy really slow file transfers or you can plug it into your computer and use it as external drive.. which is faster than the TC.. and TM can include it in the backup.

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

I have an Intel Core Duo iMac with a 320GB internal hard drive. I have a 500GB Digital Western external hard drive attached via firewire where I store my iTunes library and iPhoto library. I also use this drive for Time Machine to back everything up, this drive is unpartitioned.
Being stupid, I have only just realised that my Time Machine is not backing up the iTunes and iPhoto libraries as they are on the same drive as my Time Machine back ups. I do however keep a copy of the iTunes and iPhoto Libraries on another external hard drive (WD My Passport 320GB) just in case.
To back everything up, (Both internal and external hard drives) I intend to buy another external hard drive as my sole hard drive for Time Machine backups.
My question is, am I going about this in the right way? What size drive should I get? I was thinking 1TB but at the moment money is tight so 500GB might be all I can afford, will this be enough to back everything up? considering not all the drives are full.

If your intent is to remove the songs from your computer's internal drive you don't want to manually move them because iTunes won't know where they are. The safe way to perform this move is to start iTunes, open iTunes Preferences, and select the advanced tab. Plug in the external drive if it isn't already.
Using the picture above as a guide, (1) click on the Change button and select your external hard drive. (I created a Music folder on my external drive because I keep more than just music on it). 2) Click to put checkmarks in the boxes marked (2) and (3) and then click on the Ok button. This sets the stage for copying the music to your external drive and will make sure all your new music is put there as well.
The last step is to select the File menu, choose Library, and then Consolidate Library. This actually moves the music. Depending on how large your music library is and the speed of your external drive this will take a few minutes to a few hours. -

You have to turn Time Machine "On" for each Mac separately. By default, it is "Off". Leave it off if you do not want to use Time Machine. If by some chance Time Machine is "On", then turn it "Off" -

I've used an external drive for time machine which has important files on it. After trying to back up my computer, it suddenly needed to be "repaired" by utilities. Now it's not being "seen" at all! How do I recover my important files off the drive?
