Can I use the 40 gig ipod software on my sons computer w/ my new 4 gig nano

My son has a 40 gig ipod. I just received a little 4 gig nano. I am really not a computer person and my computer doesn't even have sp2 on it (it locked up when I tried to download it years ago when sp2 came out so I took it off and have never put it on my computer) My son's computer has sp2, and he downloads all sorts of things from itunes. Can I just hook my ipod to his computer via a usb port and use his software to put songs on my little ipod or do I need to go thru all the set up that my little 4 gig ipod tells me to do? I realize this is probably a fairly stupid question but I am really new at the whole mp3 world!

You can use your son's computer if you so wish.
Turn the iPod on and choose a language from the list. Now you should see the "main menu" where you can configure your iPod. You may need to charge the iPod first. Most iPods come with a partial charge. The last one I had was almost fully charged, but it will depend on how long the box has been sitting on a retailer's shelf.
Also, all iPods are now supplied Windows formatted.
When you first connect the iPod, you see the set up assistant/licensing agreement and of course you must click "agree" in order to proceed.
Then you'll be prompted to name the iPod and choose a method of auto syncing music to your iPod.
There are various methods of transferring different songs to different iPods with a single iTunes library.
One is to manage the songs manually.
With this setting, you can drag and drop songs/playlists etc onto the iPod from iTunes, and also delete and/or edit songs which are currently on the iPod without affecting the iTunes library.
If you wish to keep the convenience of automatic sync, then you could set the iPods to sync with "selected playlists". This setting can be found in the iPod summary screen under the 'music' tab. With this setting, different playlists can be transferred and later deleted from each iPod without affecting any playlists stored in iTunes or the playlists on the other iPods.
Also, on the 'summary' main page you will see the option to "only sync checked items". With this setting selected, if you remove the check marks from any songs in iTunes, they will not be transferred to the iPod. You can restore the check mark if you want to put the songs back on the iPod at a later date.
Be aware that when playing songs in iTunes, any songs that do not have a check mark against them will be skipped over and will not be played.
If you need to ask anything, or anything I've posted is not clear, post back.
Just for your info, you may well find that the nano can be used on your computer without SP2 and it may be worth a try first.

You know, this is just a thought.  I'm not sure the differences between the iq526 and iq770, but as I was looking around I found this article.  I don't know if it'll help, but you might want to take a look.  Evidently someone figured out how to use the HP touchsmart as an external monitor for his Dell laptop.

  • My phone number appears on my daughters iTouch and she can receive my text messages.  If I need to creaye a new user account for her itouch, can i use the same iTunes account or do i need to create a new iTunes account?

My phone number appears in my daughters list of acceptable numbers to receive texts or messages on her iTouch.
I sync her iTouch on my iTunes account.
Do I need to create a separate iTunes account for her to prevent this from happening?  or can i use the same itunes account and just create a separate a differne user name for the same itunes account?
If i need to create a separate iTunes account, how can i save her data and game levels?

    I recommend that you
Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
and Settings>iCloud if you want her to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.

I disagee (you called it threadjacking twice), but we can argue about that elsewhere.
As far as I know, only Lion Server and Time Capsule provide networked Time Machine services
    It is supported.

  • I have an iPod classic that syncs my entire library, I'd like to buy a smaller iPod, a nano maybe for the gym. Can I use the same library or do I need to set up a new library for the 2nd iPod? Is that possible? I mean for one to have 2 iTune librarys?

In other words, no. You don't need another iTunes Library for your new iPod
Another iTunes Library, that's only if someone elses music is mixed in with yours and you want to create another Windows user account with their music in it.
The iTunes Library is the master vault containing all your content, from there you create playlists or smart playlists specially tailored for the smaller iPod's storage requirements.
For instance if the iPod can hold only 2,000 songs, then you create a smart playlist based upon those rules/limitation. Plus what type of music you like.
You have a incredible degree of control with smart playlists, they update automatically so you only set the conditions for what goes into them. Including content from other created playlists and smart playlists.
Then, when you hook up the smaller iPod, it has it's own sync options, "all of your music and playlists" or "only select playlists"  So you use the second option to select just the smart playlist you tailored for the new iPod.
When you hook up the iPod Classic, only it's sync options are used, not the new iPod ones.
I hope I explained it better this time.

  • How can i use the cloud on ipod touch 3g

any ideas how to use the cloud with the 3g ipo touch?

You need iOS 5 for iCloud. A 3G iPod can go to iOS 5. However, since you say you have iOS 4.2.1 I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
    Identifying iPod models
    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • Can I use my first generation iPod on a Windows PC computer?

I have a 10 gig very first generation iPod that I have been using on my Mac. I want to sell it to someone who has a PC.
    1. Can they use it on the PC?
    2. If so, what do they need to do?
    a) install iTunes on their PC
    b) get some type of fireware to USB adapter? Where do they get this?
    c) What else??
Many thanks. Don't want to sell it to this guy unless he can use it.

NO. The 1st. gens are MAC ONLY (I just bought one, so i know.) Sorry to dissapoint you....

  • Can I use the migration assistant to migrate my Mac Book Pro to my new MacBook Air. Is there any problem with this since the platforms are not identical?

I have Mac Book Pro ( bought November 2010) that I want to migrate all of the data and applications from, over to a new Mac Book Air? It was suggested that I use the Migration Tool as it is supposed to make an exact clone of the Mac Book Pro machine and put it on the Mac Boor Air. Can that really work if you are going from one platform to another?
I was also told I could restore the data from my time capsule to the MacBook Air.
I'm looking for the easiest method that will leave me with as little to do as possible to get up an running on the Mac Book Air afterwards. I'm not a real strong user and don't want to have to reconfigure applications to make them work.
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Connecting your MacBook Pro and your MacBook Air will be the fastest way, but you have to spend money on cables and adapters (also, your MacBook Pro doesn't support Thunderbolt).
As you have a Time Capsule, one thing you can do is to start your MacBook Pro and make a Time Machine backup. Then, turn on your MacBook Air and set it up. Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so select the option to restore the backup from the Time Capsule and be patient. This can take a lot of time if you have to migrate a lot of files

  • Can I use the power supply from a 1.83GHz CD mini with a new 2.53GHz mini?

Because I'm too lazy to remove the old power supply, I just want to swap out my old mini for my new one.

I did this for a month, for the same reason as you. Both power supplies are are 110 watts -- although you can double-check that, if you like.
Eventually I did make the change, I guess because I didn't want to put "new wine in old skins".

  • Can I use my 4th gen iPod on Mac AND Windows computer?

My main household computer is a Mac. It also contains our main iTunes Library, and everything else. However, when I went to hook up my iPod to my HP mini (net book), my iTunes and my laptop both said that I had to format my iPod before I could use it on that computer. Why is this? I did not have to do so with my iTouch. Is there a way around this? I really would like to transfer my purchased songs onto the net book, but I cannot access the iPod at all with out formatting it.

Install the MacDrive trial, or if you just want to transfer the songs, use a network connection or a drive other than the iPod to do it.

  • Installation cannot directly upgrade the version of iPod software found

As best I can tell this question was asked but not answered:
Msg. installing iTunes 7.X reads: "The installation cannot directly upgrade the version of iPod software found on this computer. Please uninstall the iPod software and try again." All references to iPod, iTunes, QuickTime removed from Add/Remove, C:Program Files and recycle bin. Got rid of same with Window Cleanup Installer utility whe add/remove did not work.
So,nothing to uninstall? Can't buy a new iPod since can't load iTunes 7.x and Apple loses sale (and me music)
Can load iTunes 6.X fine without a problem.
    Thank you.

    Okay.
Let's try getting an iTunes 7 installer log to the Apple Engineers for a look.
    1. Open a command prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)
    2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.
    3. Type in a space, then the following line:
    /l*v C:\log.txt
    4. Hit return.
    5. The installer will create a log file:
    C:\log.txt
Find that file and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing
