Can I use the Export express as a wireless client?

I live in the proximity of a free open wireless network and I would like to have my Airport Express act as a wireless client (i.e., pick up the wireless signal) and then pass it via Ethernet to a computer that does NOT have a wireless card.
I configured the Airport Express to connect to the wireless network successfully (I chose the option "Join a wireless network" and the light is now green).
However, the Ethernet port doesn't seem to output anything.
I noticed that under "Connection Sharing" in the Airport Express the option selected is "Off (Bridge Mode)" and it's grayed out.
Any ideas?

Most likely not, as for the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) Ethernet port to be enabled, the AX must be configured as either a remote or relay base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, most non-AirPort wireless routers are not WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.

In this configuration, the AX is acting like a wireless client. No different than any other device (printer, computer, etc.) that will connect to a wireless network. When the AX is configured as a "wireless client," its Ethernet port is not enabled.

  • Can you use the Airport Express A1264 as an AP and a DHCP server at the same time?

Can you use the Airport Express A1264 as an Access Point and a DHCP server at the same time?
I would like to use it as a DHCP server and AP at the same time in my LAN (no internet, just local machines through a few switches). I was lead to belive this could be the case from a few networking friends that haven't been friendly enough to help me out setting it up.

I need it to act as a dLink/Cisco/Linksys/etc basic wifi router, in the fact that you can access it via wifi, and it will spit out DHCP addresses (192.168.1.xxx) to everything wired downstream of it.
I want to simultaniously provide a Wifi connection and a LAN connection at the same time
    Thanks,

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.

  • Can i use the airport express in my hotel with wired connection?

I'm going to be traveling quite a bit coming up and staying in hotels with wired internet connections in the room.  Can i use the airport express to connect with the hotel's internet connection and then my ipad and/or iphone 4S?  I'm new to Apple products so will certainly appreciate any info that may help.  Thank you!

You will need to have AirPort Utility installed on the iPad and/or iPhone. It is free on the App Store
    App Store - AirPort Utility
Connect the AirPort Express 802.11n to the hotel Ethernet jack using an Ethernet cable
Power up the AirPort Express and wait 40-45 seconds
Tap Settings, then tap Wi-Fi on the iPad
Tap the AirPort Express under the heading of Set up an AirPort Base Station
AirPort Utility will take a moment to to analyze the connection and then you can proceed with the easy guided setup
Once the AirPort Express is configured, you should not have to set it up again at the next hotel. But, you could if you want to.

  • Can I use the airport express with a desktop computer that is not wire less- I want to have wifi in the house for an iphone

Can i use the airport express with a desktop computer not wifi- I want wifi for my iphone

I can't seem to find any information anywhere.  It seems like it should work since the AX is showing up on his wifi settings on both his iPhone and iPod.  Not to mention the Apple "Genius" told him that it should work.  However, they also told him that it came with an ethernet, USB and the stereo patch cables...

  • Can I use the Airport Express as a cable modem?

I am trying to set up wireless internet in my home, and I am planning to purchase an Airport Express. Can I use the Airport Express as a cable modem, or do I have to purchase a modem from the ISP and then connect the AE to the output of the cable modem?
    Thanks,
    Adrian

No, the AirPort base stations do not perform the functions of a DSL or cable modem, so you will still need to acquire one.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to create a secure wireless network in a wireless-only hotel?

Can I use the Airport Express to log onto an unsecured hotel wireless network, without an ethernet cable, to create a secure wireless network for my MacbookAir, IPad, IPhone, etc.? If so, how is that done?

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.

  • Using the Aiport Express as a Wireless Access Point on Windows XP

I would like to use my airport express as a wireless access point so that it will connect wirelessly to my router and via an Ethernet cable to my laptop that does not have a wireless card. Also, I have a laptop that I don't have admin rights to, so I can't install the airport express software. I do have another computer in which I am able to set things up on, but ultimately I would like to use the Ethernet port on the airport express as a DHCP device that once configured it will automatically connect to my laptop even after powering off and on any machine with DHCP. I believe that this can be done - but correct me if I am wrong.
So far, I have been able to get the airport express to connect to my router, but I can't seem to get the intenet connection on my laptop. Can someone help? Does the software have to be installed to work even after it is configured?
    Thanks!

I have successfully gotten my AX to connect to my wireless router via the wireless client mode, but I can't seem to get the network connection to come out the either net jack of the AX.
Unfortunately, the wireless client mode will not activate the Ethernet port. The purpose of this mode is to connect to an existing wireless network as a client (just like any other device connecting to the network) and be able to either/or stream iTunes or share a USB printer.
The only mode where the Ethernet port is enabled, would be to configure the AX as either a relay or remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). But, unfortunately, your Belkin wireless router may not be WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
Again, the only Belkin routers, that I'm aware of that are compatible are the F5D7230-4 & F5D7130.

  • Can I use the 'Export Signal Property Node' on a quadrature encoder?

    Hi,
So I don't know which counter board I'd be using yet for this (it's used in conjunction with a PCI-6280--the PCI-6280's counter inputs are all taken and so I need another board), but assuming this is possible at all in DAQmx I wouldn't mind knowing whether, say, the PCI-6601 (or any other timer board for that matter) could do this. I'm programming this in LabVIEW 2010 by the way.
I want to have a counter which counts the number of pulses on one channel (I'll call this the 'clock' channel) between when another channel goes from low to high (which I'll call the trigger). It's basically a pulse width measurement, but I only care if there are more than n clock pulses between triggers. I need to have a hardware-timed digital signal which goes from low to high if there are ever more than n pulses between trigger changing state from low to high.
What I am planning to do is this:
Wire 'trigger' to the z-input of the quadrature encoder, and set the z-input value to some arbitrary large value such that, at the quadrature encoder counter task's settings, the counter reaches terminal count in n pulses.
Configure the quadrature encoder counter using DAQmx Export Signal Property Node (tutorial I was looking at is here: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5387 ) to toggle a digital channel ('counter event output') from low to high if the counter reaches terminal count (ie, if the encoder reads n pulses).
If the encoder ever reads n pulses on 'clock' between two rising pulses on 'trigger', it sets counter event output high.
Is this possible? Reading through the manual of M series PCI-62xx devices, the index pulse loads the counter with a particular value so it seems like you could conceivably set the counter to the terminal count if you wanted. My only real problem is whether DAQmx Export Signal Property Node works on all counter tasks or just on edge counting tasks.
Thanks in advance for your help. If this isn't possible, I can reply with more details on the problem this is supposed to solve so that you can help me figure out an alternate method.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There is probably a way to do it, but it it may be easier to use an X-series board for the job.   They support a new counter capability for count reset on a digital edge without needing to be configured in encoder position mode.  I am not sure exactly how that feature's been implemented however, so maybe it won't make things easier after all.
The plan based on the hoped-for behavior:
    1. Configure an X-series counter for pulse generation based on "ticks" of your clock channel.
    2. Set both initial delay and low time to the critical # of ticks.
    3. Configure for count reset on a digital edge (if possible in pulse generation mode)
    4. Configure the count reset value to be the critical # (or possibly 1 less, if possible in pulse generation mode)
    5. If you want the output to remain high indefinitely, configure the counter task to use its own output as a
pause trigger, and pause while high.
The way pulse generation works is to preload a # of "low time" ticks into the count register.  Then every source edge will decrement the count.  When the count reaches terminal count (0), the counter's output is toggled (or can be configured to pulse).  The register is then loaded with the # of "high time" ticks and the process continues.
You would be perpetually interrupting the count-down process as long as you got your triggers in time.  The count would keep getting reset to the # of low counts, keep decrementing toward 0 without reaching it, and so on.  If ever you did reach 0, the output state would toggle high, then the high state would prevent subsequent clock signals from decrementing the count.
You can conceivably do a similar thing with a 6601, but I'm pretty sure you'd need 2 counters working together to get it working.

  • Can I use the airport express as a repeater/range expander but without being connected to the modem with the ethernet cable?

I have a mac pro (2010 mid) to set up the airport

My 2003 Airport Extreme I guess does not provide this "enable extension of other Wireless Device" option in Airport Untility under "Wireless",  because it is too old?
Correct. You will need one of the "square" AirPort Extreme versions if you want to do this.
Another question, do I need to buy a new Airport Extreme to be able to extend my Wi-Fi signal with the New Airport Express I just bought?
Yes, or another new AirPort Express. But, you cannot connect a hard drive to an AirPort Express. You can with an AirPort Extreme in case you were planning to add a hard drive.
One last question, I believe I understood that if I have the new Airport Extreme and use it with my Airport Express to extend the Wi-Fi Signal, I will be able to do this without my DSL Ethernet cable connected to the Airport Express?
The DSL cable will need to be connected to the AirPort that you designate as the "main" router on the network....assuming that you want to be able to connect to the Internet.
The other AirPort will connect using wireless only....assuming that it is located where it can get a good wireless signal.

  • Can I use the Airport express w/s for all sound on my mac?

    Hey y'all!
I have another one, can you select such that all sound on your mac goes through the airport express and the speakers connected to it? Or can it only be used in connection with i-tunes?
Might be a simple stupid question, but I have trawled through most discussions concerning airport, and gave up on the help files, no one seems to have asked.... So... Any bright ideas? I am sure you macboffins know right?
    Cheers and happy easter,
    Bloggs

iTunes is the primary program for streaming music from the mac to the airport and is the best out there considering that it was written directly by the vendor who made the product.
Having said that though, when you asked the question it kinda got me thinking as to whether or not it could be done, after looking briefly on the internet i did come across this link:
    http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/
This link seems to advertise a company which has designed there own software to work and stream any sound from the mac (or windows machine) they do both across the airport express.
Not sure good it is, but the company seems to be quite confident in it considering they are trying to sell it. I myself will be sticking with iTunes as i feel no need to line another companies pockets with money when they are trying to make money off apples hardwork.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I use The Airport Express as a router only. Need your help

    Hi there,
I need to get some help from anyone for a good wireless router for a MacBook Pro. I want to know if anyone had a Airport Express as a router only of some help in this matter.
Hope to get your feedback. Thanks

Can you explain a bit more?
The Apple Express is a router. The new Apple Express has a LAN port so you can have a device on a wired connection.
Are you talking about removing the modem and only having the Airport Express?

  • Can I use the Airport Express only with a LAN connection?

Because I want to connect my macbook (+ all other hardware) via WLAN with my Speedport Router. Which is connect via LAN cable with the Airport Express. Can I then deactivate the WLAN function in the Airport software?
When I try this, I can configure the setup. This works till a restart, after that I cannot find the Airport Express. Already I connect the macbook with the LAN-cable it works again.

    look that
so i have connected my components.
i only want to deactivate the WLAN in the Airport Configuration. if i connected in this way it works without problems. after restart i cannot find the airport express.

  • Using the Airport express as a wireless network adapter

I have a mac with no wireless network card but I have an extra Airport express. I would like to plug the mac into teh ethernet port of the AE and then use it to get onto my homes wireless network...
Is this possible? I have been trying to do this for hours and I cannot get a config that works. I can use it to setup a wirless printer just fine, why not my computer?
    Please help!!

I'm having the same networking problem. Out of curiosity, though, how would you plug the mac into the ethernet port of AE? Wouldn't you have to plug the modem into the ethernet port? My Airport Express only has one ethernet port. Just curious how you would get internet to your AE without plugging the modem to it.
I went out and bought a LinkSys switch, trying to alleviate my problem of having to switch between being able to use my Mac Pro desktop (wired, due to no wireless card yet) and being able to use my laptops, PS3, etc. wirelessly by switching the ethernet cable constantly from the Mac Pro to the Airport Express. So, I bought the switch, but I can't get my network configured to where I can run everything at the same time. I'm still having to switch cables around. Any suggestions? Or do I just have to bite the bullet and have the wireless card installed?
