Can I use the Leopard Disk Utility to repair a Tiger partition?

I have a multi-partition external disk, one partition has Tiger installed on it, while others have Leopard. (I used Leopard to partition the drive and then used SuperDuper! to copy my earlier Tiger backup from another disk to this disk.) Now I find I have errors on the partition with Tiger. Can I use the Disk Utility tool from my Leopard install to repair the Tiger partition? Earlier today I tried to boot from my Tiger install DVD and use the Disk Utility there to repair the partition, but it just hangs up and won't go forward.
thanks,
Chris Altwegg

You could use it, but if Tiger's Disk Utility couldn't fix it, it's doubtful Leopard's would fix it as well. You're better off using Disk Warrior from Alsoft.com.

  • Can I use the install disk on two computers?

I haven't actually installed it on my computer yet, I just allowed whatever was going to install itself to come up. If I have another computer, can I use the install disk to put OSX on there or not? If so, can I still use it in case I need a backup load of my computer?

Only if you get a family pack license newer than the installer disk which came with the computer(s) can you install it on multiple computers. Check your license agreement.
You can't use the disks which came with another computer on a second computer. These articles explain more along those lines:

  • I have a late-2008 macbook that is running 10.5.8. I also have a newer macbook that came with snow leopard. Can I use the install disk that came with the newer macbook to update my older macbook?

Also, when upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard, will I lose all the data that is currently on my hard drive?

No, that SL disk is meant for the computer it came with only.
Upgrading to SL generally will not cause data loss, but you should have a backup of your important files in any case.
You can get a Snow Leopard disk by calling Apple - in the USA it's 800-MY-APPLE.
    Best of luck.

  • Satellite L500-19X - Can't use the recovery disk

Well I got this laptop two days ago and used it once after installing fire fox and my mobile broadband drvier's and going back home to boot up and find it was going to happen,
I had tried safe mode (all three) and repair and all I got was a black screen with the cursor up where there should have been a language screen (I used the recovery disk that came along with the laptop) so anyway after finding out I wasnt going to be able to repair it I tried to install but of course that didn't work either so I put my XP 64 bit OS on and worked perfectly fine, then I upgraded (using my own upgrade windows 7) and that works fine no problems, so I tried again with the original windows 7 that came pre-installed on the laptop's hard drive and all went find untill it starts installing driver's or updates (I'm not 100% sure on this but it is at and/or after the face recognition installation,
Then it shuts it's self down and boots back up to automatically restart and asking me if I want to repair due to a bad start-up so I do the repair boots back up and still says I need to repair and finds nothing wrong and carrys on in that circle.
Now I have been told that it could be the register or it is a graphics problem, I myself am getting pretty fed up of having to install/reinstall/format this laptop.
So if there is anyone who know's what is wrong or what to do or even if it needs to be sent back to be fixed that will be very helpful.
    I thank anyone in advance.
    Happy new year :)

    Hi
Well, I think its really hard to say what the reason is. Maybe the recovery disk is scratchy or the files corrupt there.
At the moment I cant imagine that its a hardware problem because other Windows disk working properly.
In your case I would try to install Windows 7 from a Microsoft disk and then see what happens. If it works properly and you can install all drivers & tools you should order a new recovery disk from Toshiba directly.
    Bye

  • I have a mac pro 2007 model. It appears I have a corrupted sector on my the hadrive tha has my operating system. If I use the install disk that came with is (Tiger) can I still get my lion back.

I have mac pro 2007 model given to me, I updated it to lion about six months ago, and I do not have a time machine.
Lion stopped loading before I get to the login screen,
I tried all the tips, doing a option/shift/v. I noticed several fsk_dsk errors that it could not fix on my boot drive.
Restore would not work either. The only physical copy I have is the install disk that came with the mac. I think it is Tiger.
If I put this operating system on will I be abel to upgrade it to lion, and if so will I have to pay again?

The Lion Recovery Partition has its own index. Your Macintosh HD partition is the one with the troubles.
If Disk Utility cannot fix it, you may need to apply different Utilities, such as Disk Warrior.
Some readers suggest that the best disk repair is to erase the drive and restore it from your Backups.
This might be a good time to consider getting a new drive to have on hand. This would allow you flexibility in copying, fixing, and (if needed) replacing the drive with the problems.

  • Can I use a 3T disk on a G5 running Tiger?

I am trying to upgrade the hard drives in my 2004 2 Ghz Dual Processor PowerPC G5 running Mac OS X 10.4.11.  (I need Tiger to run some older apps.)  I replaced the original Maxtor 250GB SATA with a 3T Hitachi Deskstar.  I'm hoping to install a second 3T drive and mirror all my work using RAID1.  I would like to use this machine to drive my Nikon Slide Scanner and manage large archives of TIF and Raw photographic files.
Since Tiger would not recognize the larger drive, I used Disk Utility from a Leopard DVD to partition the drive into 2 parts: 1T and 1.8T.  These partitions checked out when verified with the Leopard version of DU.  I have successfully copied my applications and files to the smaller partition (I'm using it now), but the Tiger Disk Utility tells me I have problems with the 1.8T partition.  I get the message: "The underlying task reported failure on exit."  I had successfully repaired the partition with the Leopard version of DU ("Invalid file clump size."), but cannot repair it using Tiger DU.
    Questions:
Is there a disk size limit under Tiger?
Is it possible that I'm encountering a timing problem with the bigger faster disk?  Is there a different jumper setting I can use?
Is this likely a problem with the drive itself?
Is there another utility that I can use with OSX 10.4 that will fix this problem?
I've searched discussions and boards for the last day or so, and am not finding any answers.
    Help would be appreciated.

To promote file contiguity and avoid fragmentation, disk space is typically allocated to files in groups of allocation blocks, or clumps. The clump size is always a multiple of the allocation block size. The default clump size is specified in the volume header.

To use Partitions of more than 2.2TB they came up with GUID Partition Scheme, as APM had the 2.2TB limit. Drives also now use Advanced Format...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Format
I've read that 10.4.11 is supposed to deal with that, but it's not 100% clear to me if that includes G5 Macs running 10.4.11, or only Intel Macs, or whether there might even be some split between early & late G5s with that capability.

  • Can't open Software Update, Disk Utility, or Repair Permissions

    Hello,
I'm having some very strange issues with my OS 10.4.9. I can't open Software Update (it appears in the dock then disappears), the same happens with Disk Utility, and I can't install software. I know this is an OS problem as a tech support person at work was able to run these things successfully from the startup disk. This sounds like a corrupted preference file to me, but I'm not adept enough to know.
Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  • Disk Utility stopped repairing "disk1s2"-a partition from an external hard disk

I bought a new Seagate Go Flex Desk 2TB exernal HD.Three days ago one of the three partitions(1.7TB) on this HD stopped working, when i tried to repair the volume in Disk Utility it stoped repairing, showing the following message-
    Verify and Repair volume “disk1s2”
Checking file systemChecking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
    Invalid sibling link
    Rebuilding catalog B-tree.
The volume   could not be repaired.
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Now the problem is after starting it only shows the other two partitions,in Disk Utility the problematic volume no longer bears the name given by me and shows 'disk1s2' in dimmed letters. I had some nessesary piece of data in that volume. My question is-
1.Is there any oter software that i can try to fix with?
2.If i reformat the disk and ceate the partition again would it work smoothly?
3.there were power cut off 7-8 times when using the HD,if it's the reason ten why the other two partitions are working properly? One of these volumes used to contain Time Machine Back-up.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I have (kind of) a simmilar problem with yours, does DiskWarrior really helped?? Since it's not free, is there any other program that might helped ???

  • Will Restore in Leopard Disk Utility reliably copy a drive with bootcamp?

I have a drive partitioned part OS X and part Bootcamp (with Windows XP installed). If I use Apple's Disk Utility to 'Restore' the drive (to copy the drive to a larger drive) will this work reliably for bootcamp as well as the OS X content? Presumably this just clones the drive?

Once you install MacFUSE you can not use the Startup Disk Utility anymore to boot into Windows, you need to hold the option key every time.
As you stated, NTFS is owned by Microsoft, its their proprietary format and has many different versions of it. I don't think any company has the full right to format NTFS which basically comes down that you can not complain to any of the companies or MS about data loss.
My idea with an image is that I can always read it, so in case the WinClone format or write fails I still have all my files (and not just parts of it). Since I am booted the most amount of time on Mac OS X anyway I don't care that a script creates an entire mirror image of my current Windows drive overnight.
I actually have several basic images that I can always restore in case I want to clean up my drive.

  • Using Automator with Disk Utility

I'm new to using Automator. I want to create a work flow with Disk Utility but is doesnt appear in the applications list. How do I make Disk Utility work with Automator?

If a program doesn't appear in the list, that means that Apple hasn't written actions for it yet.
You can still use Automator with Disk Utillity, but you will need to use Applescript and the 'Run Applesript' action to operate Disk Utillity.
Unfortuately the 'how' is beyond my knowledge, and the scope of this post.

  • Getting a new macbook, but can't use the migration assistant??!

I have a 13" black macbook, purchased in early 2007 and cannot resist the new 13" MacBook Pro. I need it! Problem is, I have already sold this black mac and need to ship it out before I can get the new Pro. Therefore, I can't use the Migration Assistant Utility to transfer info from old to new mac. Is there any way I can save files, music, and applications on an external hard drive? Would applications be able to be transferred from this mac to the hard drive and then to my new mac pro? Any other suggestions?(iDisk is too small to hold everything)
    Thanks for your help.

Clone your system to your external drive using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. You can then attach the hard drive to your new Mac and it will treat it like a previous Mac for the purposes of Migration Assistant.
