Can I use the Time Capsule without using Time Machine?
Can I just use it as a wireless backup storage device? I'm not a huge fan of Time Machine. is Time Machine the only interface for the Time Capsule?
Hmmm, I can't see where the confusion originates. The table near the bottom of www.apple.com/timecapsule/specs.html has one row labelled "For backup using Time Machine" and another row labelled "For AirPort Disk with a USB hard drive".

The requirement for using Time Capsule as a remote disk is identified as "Mac with Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later" or "PC with Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Vista; Bonjour for Windows (included on Time Capsule CD)".
Doesn't that pretty much spell out that Time Capsule works as a network drive without the need for Time Machine?
Also Joe (the OP) never indicated any desire to use it with Windows so I'm not sure why all the discussion about Windows compatibility. ??
Also the quote posted by Henry seems pretty clear:

Hello every one, can I rewrite the following query without using the 'ROW_NUMBER() OVER ' part.
The query is supposed to pull out the records whose CODE is not NULL and has most
recent date for UPDATE_DATE . The reason I wanted to do this is, When I embed this query
in between many other queries along with JOINs, My oracle server is unable to execute. So, I thought
its better to supplant 'ROW_NUMBER() OVER ' logic with something else and try it. .
SELECT a.* FROM
(SELECT b.*, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY b.PIDM
ORDER BY b.UPDATE_DATE DESC) AS Rno
FROM
SELECT *
FROM SHYNCRO WHERE CODE IS NOT NULL
)b
)a
WHERE a.Rno = 1Hi,
You didn't write over 150 lines of code and then start testing it, did you?
Don't.
Take baby steps. Write as little as pssiblem test that. Debug and test again until you have something that does exactly what you want it to do.
When you have somehting that works perfectly, take one baby step. Add a tiny amount of code, maybe 1 or 2 lines more, and test again.
When you do get an error, or wrong results, you'll have a much better idea of where the problem is. also, you won't be building code on a flimsy foundation.
If you need help, post the last working version and the new version with the error. Explain what you're trying to do in the new version.
The error message indicates line 133. It looks like line 133 of your code is blank. Does your front end allow completely blank lines in the middle of a query? SQL*Plus doesn't by default; you have to say
SET SQLBLANKLINES ONto have a completely blank line in SQL*Plus. (However, lines containing nothing but at commnet are always allowed.)
You may have noticed that this site normally doesn't display multiple spaces in a row.
Whenever you post formatted text (such as indented code) on this site, type these 6 characters:
\(small letters only, inside curly brackets) before and after each section of formatted text, to preserve spacing.
The 4 people who posted small code fragments for you to read all did this. It would be so much easier for people to read your humongeous query if it were formatted. -
Can u write the following query without using group by clause
select sp.sid, p.pid, p.name from product p, supp_prod sp
where sp.pid= p.pid and
sp.sid = ( select sid from supp_prod group by sid
having count(*) =(select count(*) from product));
thru this, we retrieving all the products delivered by the supplier.
Can you write the following query without using the group by clauseselect sp.sid, p.pid, p.name
from product p, supp_prod sp
where sp.pid= p.pid the above query will still retrieve all the products supplied by the supplier. sub-query is not necessary.
maybe if you can post some sample data and output will help us understand what you want to achieve. -
How can I view the files on my Time Capsule without using Time Machine?
In the past Time Machine was backing up to a regular external disc and I could view the files easily. I'm new to the Time Capsule and not sure this is possible as I can't "find" the Time Capsule disc.
Thanks for any tipsThe Time Capsule's drive appears as a network drive, so it doesn't show up as an external drive.
To access to it, first make sure you are connected to the Time Capsule. Then, open a Finder window and you will see the Time Capsule's drive in the sidebar, under "Shared". Select it and you will be able to access to the files stored in the Time Capsule -

Can't connect ethernet cable on Time capsule without messing Time Machine
Hi All,
I just bought a Time Capsule couple of weeks ago.
I have a mac with time machine enabled on Wi-fi. I also have a vista that I can't get the wireless card to work properly... It keeps disconnecting and connecting from the internet.
So I decided to plug an Ethernet cable between the vista and time capsule. Everything was working great, except that Time machine cannot connect to time capsule as long as that cable is there...
Can't find anything to fix this...
So either solution is fine by me: either some tips on why Vista keeps dropping the internet connection or why my time machine can't back up with an ethernet cable plugged on Time Capsule.
thanks,
marcelo.

Aj4duke, that is not right. You can
Create a NEW account using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.

Can I use wd smart ware without using time machine
I have bought My Book Studio to use as an external hard drive for back-up to an iMac with Lion 10.7.2. I have heard of problems with WD Smartware. Can I use My Book without installing the WD Smartware or, on the other hand, can i use the WD Smartware without using Time Machine? Thanks
You can use the drive without using WD Smartware. Use Time Machine with the drive and leave off all the WD supplied software.

It is better to have the TC as part of the main network in bridge. You do not need to run wireless.
If you want to use the TC plugged in by ethernet and still use wireless for internet, that is possible but the setup is rather more complicated.. the computer must not get confused about which device to use as a gateway or dns server.
See info in this thread on setting this up.

I need to add.. a USB drive would be cheaper, faster and more reliable. It is really poor use of a TC. -
Can I connect an external HD on the time capsule and use it as storage space ?
Hello,
I am thinking about purchasing a time capsule for backing up my data, but I also need storage space for photos and videos, can I connect an external hard drive to the time capsule and use it as storage ? If so, is there any risk of the time machine use the external hd space for backup as well and eat up all the storage ?can I connect an external hard drive to the time capsule and use it as storage ?
Yes....for storage, as in backup files. But, not recommended for "working" image or media libraries.
If so, is there any risk of the time machine use the external hd space for backup as well and eat up all the storage ?
No, unless you intend to also use the same drive for Time Machine backups. -

Does anyone can use time capsule without connection breaks?
if I backup more than 100 mb, the connection via wifi breaks and i can not find the time capsule. either i have to restart computer or time capsule. i use mac lion. time capsule 1 st gen, 500 g
Ok .. this is pretty easy.
You plug the WAN port on TC into the N900 LAN port by ethernet.
Open the airport utility on the Mac.
Simply allow it to automatically setup and it should select bridge mode.. if not just jump in at the end .. click on the edit under the summary and go to the network tab and select bridge.
Then go to the wireless tab and make sure you are creating a wireless name.. you can give it the same name as the N900 same security same password.. this is called roaming network.
Or use a different name.. use short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
I have given a different name to 5ghz.
It will not matter which wireless you connect to but the TC is faster on the 5ghz for backups. -
How can I use the free space of my Time Capsule as wireless HD ?
Hi,
Just set up a 2T Time Capsule and use it as Time Machine for my IMac and my MacBook.
How can I use the 1 Tb free space to ave data available from all my devices ?
Tksthierry118 wrote:

Although it seems like you have a lot of extra space, Time Machine keeps versions, and if you want to take full advantage of the version history you should not worry about "extra space" because it will get used to provide safer coverage for the two Macs. If you had a Time Machine disk that fit your two Macs' hard drives perfectly, you would have no room for the version history, only room for the one most recent copy of each file. This can be a problem if you discover corruption that happened a while ago and cannot go back far enough in time to find an uncorrupted file.
Therefore it's better to not try and use up the "extra space" and let it be used for a longer, safer version history for your backups.
But like you, I want to use my Time Machine for additional network storage. So I plugged a cheap, compact hard drive into the Time Capsule USB port, and that shows up in File Sharing too. There is no need to buy anything fancier since it will be limited by both network speed and USB 2.0 anyway. -
I have bought a time capsule to use as time machine device. Until now I have used a external hard disk. How can I transfer the the old time machine datas to the time capsule?
This is really difficult to the point of not really worth it.
Keep the old TM backups in archive.. and start afresh on the TC.
Time Machine has a different way of backing up on Network drives cf Local drives.
Pondini does have a method to do it... but I would not recommend it.

I want to use the drive as external, wireless storage for all of my files so all my PCs, MACs and iOS devices can access the files. Plus, I want to use the drive for backing up my iMac via time machine. Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously? If not, are the other suggestions on how I can do this?
Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?
It can, but is really not recommended. Sooner or later there will be a fight for space on the drive between Time Machine and the other files.
If you have plenty of free space on the drive, you can do this......but.....have you thought about how you will back up the "other" files that are stored on the Time Capsule?
