Can I use the WAN port on my AirPortExpress to extend my WiFi from my Time Capsule?

OK folks, here's what I want to do.  I have a Time Capsule not only supplying WiFi, but also connected to the ethernet in my home.  What I want to do is use the ethernet to connect my AirPort Express and extend the WiFi signal.  I've tried various settings configurations and the closest I get is a duplicate network.  This causes problems for Home Sharing of iTunes accounts to my 2 Apple TV's, one that is connected to ethernet and the other WiFi.  Plus, it seems to confuse our iPhones and another WiFi computer from time to time.
So can this even be done, is there another option I'm missing? We are trying to use this in a room for the AirPlay feature and the original WiFi signal drops pretty regularly, so moving it closer to the TC is a last resort.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi - if what you want to do is have the Express produce a wireless network with a new name then you need to configure it in the following way - it should be set to connect via ethernet in bridge mode and set to "create a wireless network" with a new name and password of your choice - if you need specific steps let me know.

  • Can I use the ethernet port ....

Can I use the ethernet port on the ATV to connect my blue ray p[layer to the internet using the ATV as a wireless card??
    If so how??

I might be next in line on the airport extreme! Right now wireless is working better since the latest upgrade to iTunes, but hardwire is the way to go. Only problem is that ISP connections is in my office and my Home Media is downstairs. I was thinking of setting the Airport Extreme as a repeater in order to access ISP and then used the ports in the back for iTunes and ATV.

  • Using the WAN port as a "LAN" port on the Airport Extreme Base Station...

    Hi everyone,
I'm re-building my home wireless network and I'm doing so in preparation for the Slingbox AV I ordered last week. Here's my current setup:
I have a DSL modem attached to an Airport Express (802.11n) in my office broadcasting my internet signal. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11g) set up in my living room as a WDS extender. I currently use the base station in my living room to connect the DishNetwork ViP722 DVR to the internet and allow me to set recordings remotely on my iPhone when I'm away from home. I use the LAN port on the base station to do this, and now with the Slingbox on the way (should be here early next week), I'm wondering what I need to do to make an internet connection available for the Slingbox AV.
My question: Will I be able to simply use the WAN port as a "LAN" port since the Airport Extreme Base Station is being used as a WDS? It'd be awesome if the WAN port would become, essentially, a LAN port since it isn't being used.
Thanks in advance for your advice and insight!

I'd be surprised if that worked. The operation of an AirPort base station depends on keeping the WAN port and the LAN port(s) separate, as those normally are on two different networks.
You might consider buying an Ethernet hub or switch, which would allow your AirPort Extreme's LAN port to be shared. Here's an example of an inexpensive one:

  • Can I use the Ethernet Port for a computer when it is also used as a wireless network with an Airport Extreme as the access point for the wireless network

Can I use the Ethernet Port  of the A1264 Airport Express to connect to the Ethernet port of a computer that does not have wireless capability when the Airport Express is also used on a wireless network with an Airport Extreme 5th generation as the access point for the network?
    I have AE 5th gen
looking to buy (from ebay) the AEX A1264
Various computers, printers and hubs for the network
    Is this possible to do?

Bob, Thanks for the info. I have read different articles that said yes, but I wanted to make sure before I commit to buy. I have an older A1084 which I could not use the Ethernet port. I know at one point I was able to when I was on 10.4. Now that I am on an Intel processor and 10.8 I am going to have to upgrade some of my Apple wireless hardware.
    Thanks Again.

Use VISA to read/write to the parallel port just like you would read/write

there's some articles in the KnowledgeBase if you get stuck.

Yes, you can use the 85 watt adaptor. You cannot use the new adaptors because your computer is not equipped with the proper MagSafe connector. But you can use the older MBP adaptors as well as a 60 watt replacement adaptor. All can be found at Apple's Online Store.

You will need to get a local micro-sim, but yes you should be able to. 3G iPads bought in the US are not locked to a carrier, but in order to use a local micro-sim you'll need the AT&T version if buying from the US - the Verizon iPads are CDMA based and don't use sim cards (so are effectively locked to Verizon)

  • I'm trying to extend my wifi network with time capsule but it can't find the existing wifi network

I'm trying to extend my wifi network with time capsule but it can't find the existing BT wifi network even though it is there with a good signal strength. The Time Capsule is connected to a Netgear router via ethernet.

You will need to start over on the setup of the Time Capsule as follows:
Disconnect any Ethernet cables that might be connected to the Time Capsule, but leave it powered on
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 8-10 seconds and release. The reset button is located next to the AC power socket.
Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the Netgear to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.  The Ethernet cable must remain connected at all times.
Click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a setting of New AirPort Base Station
    Click on Time Capsule
The example below shows an AirPort Express. You will see Time Capsule on your screen.
That will get the setup wizard going. It will take a minute to analyze the settings, then display a screen that looks like this, except you will see a picture of the Time Capsule
Network Name..........Type in the exact name that the Netgear wireless is using
Base Station.............Type in a name that you want to call the Time Capsule.  Use something short and simple. Mine is TC, for example
Password..................Type in the exact password that the Netgear wireless requires
    Verify.........................Verify the Password again
    Click Next
The setup wizard will configure everything for you automatically.  When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
That's it.  Now you have one big "extended" network.  Technically, this is called a "roaming" network.

  • Can I use the LAN port of my Airport Express, which is being used to extend my wi-fi network from my Time Capsule?

I have a home wi-fi network based on a Time Capsule (3rd Gen.).  I recently added a new "n" Airport Express to extend my wi-fi coverage to areas of my home where the signal has been weak or non-existant.  The setup went very well (Airport Utility 6 on my MacBook Pro running Mtn. Lion) and was extremely simple and trouble free.  Now I am attempting ot plug an ethernet device (internet bridge reciver from a wirelss weather station) into the LAN port.  The weather station instructions say the device should communicate fine plugged directly into my router (not physically available where the device needs to be) OR plugged into a LAN port of an ethernet hub.  My question is then:  with the Airport Express in wi-fi extend mode, is the LAN port available to cable internet devices into the network?

My question is then:  with the Airport Express in wi-fi extend mode, is the LAN port available to cable internet devices into the network?
Yes, assuming that the setup went correctly.
Test by moving your laptop or other computer close to the AirPort Express. Temporarily, turn off the wireless on the laptop and connect it using a spare Ethernet cable to the LAN port on the Express.
See if you can get an Internet connection. If you can, you know the Express has been configured and is functioning correctly.
Since the Express is in bridge mode when it "extends" both ports become LAN ports, so if you have a second device that needs an Ethernet connection, connect it to the WAN port as it will work as well.

  • Can I use the IR port to receive other data

HI I wonder if it is possible to use the IR port on my 2.4Ghz Core Duo Imac to import data from the IR transmitter on my Aviva Accu Chek blood glucose Monitor? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I have very few tech. details about the Accuchek, some ideas of how to access the IR port would be great as a starting point
Thanks for the help Peter T

I doubt it can or there would be other hardware which may use it.
I think the problem you will have is if it can transmit the data and has been sent to your mac how would you open the data?
You need an app to access it.
But it maybe worth seeing if the diabetic app you get on the mac can understand the data it sends.

Without that, you're just wasting your time. Even if the instrument is
constantly sending data, you'll need to know how to interpret the data
and there's nothing that says it has to be sending constantly. Maybe
you first have to write something to the port first. Talk to them and
tell them you want to replace their software with software of your own

  • How can we use the SDXC PORT ?

    Hi,
Im intending to buy a Macbook pro 15" and i wonder how can i use the SDXC to boot my future macbook.
I heard there is out there some cards to make it boot faster. I am not talking here about sd camera cards.
And do you think i made the right choice by choosing the 15" 2.2 ghz i7 ?
    Thank you

There's only one way to make your "mac faster and use it every day"—replace the internal disk drive with an SSD, or replace the internal SSD with a bigger and faster SSD.
Disk I/O has alwas been the main bottleneck of all computers. So you either make it occur faster or you reduce de times it needs to occur.
In the "faster" section, the issues I have with SSDs are several:
Their price still needs to go down way more. The cost per MB of SSD-based storage is still vastly greater than that of HDDs. Yes, if you compute in extreme environments like karting down Baja or skydiving off the Himalayas, a ruggedized SSD is great, but most of us mortals live in the safe confines of a homey office.
The size of SSDs has to expand much more. Yes, they are inching up to the 500GB size, but HDDs are at 1TB and promise to break that barrier before the year is out.
If you purchase your SSD preinstalled in your Mac, you will be paying a big premium, compared to marketplace SSDs, even those from the same maker but not Apple-branded. This also applies to RAM.
If you put in a non-Apple-branded SSD, Lion will not enable TRIM support by default and you will have to go "under the hood" to enable it. Without TRIM, you will not get the full performance and durability benefit of an SSD.
Might be me, but I prefer to stick with HDDs for now, just making sure they are of 7200RPM spindle speed.
In the "reduce" section, must point out that Lion is a 64-bit beast. Meaning that all data structures are twice the size of previous 32-bit cats. Regardless of "minimum" specs, 4GB RAM is the new practical minimum and 8GB makes the fat cat much happier. But buying RAM from Apple is not a financially wise decision; an 8GB upgrade from reputable vendors can be had for around $40, in stark comparison to the $200 premium charged by the Apple store. For the same $200 or a bit less, you can get a 16GB upgrade instead, not officially sanctioned but that works just fine with the latest model Macs. In this case, I don't think the OP will need as much, but it is something to take under consideration. The extra RAM will drastically reduce the disk-based paging that the memory management carries out, thereby minimizing that bottleneck.

  • I can not use the Ethernet Port to connect another device.  My Airport Express allowed me to do this.

I want to use the Ethernet Port for my Apply TV for another device (Direct TV box), but it doesn't work.  I have Airport Express with an Ethernet port and I was able to plug my Direct TV box to download.

It's not designed to extend a network, and plugging in ethernet disables wi-fi in any case.
