Can I use Tiger and Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro?

I have a 3 year old Mac Pro with 2 internal hard drives installed by Apple at the time of purchase. At present, I'm using Tiger 10.4.11. I've purchased Snow Leopard (The Family Pack with 5 licenses) and have installed it on my MacBook Pro.
I haven't put Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro since it is my main, workhorse computer and I have several older applications that aren't compatible with Snow Leopard.
My question is: Can I install Snow Leopard on my second internal drive and leave Tiger on the main drive? That way I could use either system by changing the start-up drive to the system I want to use. Is this possible, or advisable? Will it work or cause problems?
Another question: If one of the drives needs repair, could I boot up in the other drive and run Disk Utility to make the repairs instead of booting the computer from the original software CD? (I'm having a problem finding the original Tiger 10.4 System CD in my organizationally challenged graphic design and illustration studio.)

Want to Dual Boot Tiger and Snow Leopard

I have 4 internal SATA drives on my 2007 Mac Pro, and my boot drive is Tiger 10.4.11. I just purchased Snow Leopard (Box Set), with the intention of creating a second internal boot drive that boots Snow Leopard.
I mentioned this in passing to a senior Apple Tech who indicated he thought I could do it. However I seem to remember reading the second boot drive should be an External Fire Wire.
The first question is, can I create a second boot drive (using Snow Leopard) on my Mac Pro on an internal HD?
Second question is, can the second Snow Leopard boot be on a partition? I just bought a 2 TB WD that I'd like to split up.

Alternatively, partition your internal HD and dual-boot it. Do note that you have to reboot to switch back and forth. You can't do it by logging out and back in.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

When you enable Internet Sharing in OS X, you are creating a separate sub-net.
There is no option to allow this to be a simple pass-through from Ethernet to AirPort (or the other way).
The problem is easily solved by getting an inexpensive wireless router. You can replace your current router OR disable the DHCP server on the wireless router and allow the wireless clients to get an IP address from the current router.

Can I use a Asus Nvidia gt640 with a mac pro 2006?

First, you need to look at what OS version you have. Mnay people (myself included) running some of the newer OS version are using Nvidia cards not released for the Mac. OS X Mavericks for example will support these cards, but you lose some functionaility (boot screen, etc.) Once the machine is up and running they work fine.
With a 2006 model you are before the 3.1 machines and therefore limited in the OSX version you can run. I think you need at least 10.7 Lion.
So if you can run 10.7 the answer is probably, but then you will lose some basic functionality. For many this is not important.

I will soon be using both Lion and Snow Leopard on my newly upgraded hybrid hard drive.I know that I should need to partition the drive into three 1 for Lion 1 for SL and 1 for data/applications.
The problem is how is how much space should I give each partition?
Has anyone done this before or have any good ideas how to go about it?

I am currently using a MacBook Pro (mid 2009 13")
I am currently using Lion OS X v10.7.4
The new drive is 750GB Seagate Momentus XT 7200rpm 8GB(solid-state) hybrid drive
The soon to be replaced drive is a stock 250GB 5400rpm HDD

It's important that you leave a minimum amount of free space for the OS to use. You will see anywhere from 16 to 30 GBs for your OS and iLife apps. You need enough space to allow for all your third-party applications and document files. When fully set up you may have only 30 GBs of free space which is an appropriate amount to have, but not less than 20 GBs. That makes 60 GBs a reasonable minimum size.
If you haven't put everything in concrete, I might suggest going with a 500 GB Seagate XT hybrid together with a 128 or 256 GB SSD using an OWC DataDoubler replacing the optical drive. I suggest that mainly because using the same hard drive for the OS and Data partitions will actually make file I/O slower. Having two drives and using an SSD for the startup volume will enhance file I/O operations. Only two partitions on the SSD - each 60 GBs - fit neatly in 128 GBs.

How can i downgrade lion to snow leopard on my macbook pro of early 2011

I'm trying to downgra my mac book pro back to snow leopard. i've already tried with snow leopard cd directly, but it seems not to work. I was wandering if there is a way to get apple to send me the correct version of snow leopard for my mac.

If it came with Snow Leopard, you can revert - but you have to erase your drive, so make a backup of your files first.
Then, insert the SL install disk, hold C key while restarting. Go past languages; then choose Disk Utility from Utilities. Choose erase. After erasing, SL will be installed. Update with Software Update and port back your files.
Note: the Mail program was changed significantly and you cannot simply revert - the two versions are not compatible. You'd need to extract whatever emails you need from the Lion version or, easier, simply resend those emails to yourself and don't check Mail/open them until after you're reinstalled Snow Leopard.

Using lion and snow leopard on the same computer/ partition?

In the old days to partition a hard drive on a computer the hard drive had to be erased/ reformatted first. Do I understand correctly that partioning a hard drive no longer requires this? Can someone explain, as if I'm 6 years old, how to do this? I want to upgrade to lion so I can use i-cloud on a mpb but must still have snow leopard due to a couple of ppc programs/files I still need (such as the data in chronos personal organizer, quicken 2007, and maybe a few more). Launch Disk Utility->Help->Disk Utility Help->Creating new partitions on a disk. Note, that to dynamically add a partition, journaling has to be enabled on all partitions. I have my iMac's 1 TB HD partitioned into three bootable volumes. Two running SL and one running Lion.

Can I use a German Snow Leopard upgrade for my US iMac running Leopard?

I just read that for certain Intel based iMac's it is still possible to upgrade to Maverick. I'd need to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, first, to start the process. The issue is that I'm in Germany. The German Apple site sells the Snow Leopard upgrade, but I don't know if I can use it to upgrade my US iMac (early 2008/Intel based/ running 10.5.8)? Does anybody know if there is a difference between the German and the US version?

I have a mini mac running tiger and I need to update my itunes and ipod touch which i cant currently do in tiger.
I dont want to upgrade my hard drive as most of my programs wont work with the update, eg. photoshop and dont want to buy a new photoshop package.
As i have a spare external hard drive, I was wondering if I could run leopard or snow leopard on that and update itunes that way, thus keeping tiger running on my mini mac, and have the option of which system to run. Is this possible?

Hi, yes you can, & with a big enough drive you could partition it for multiple bottable OSX Partitions.

minimum system requirements
    * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)

You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.

If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

You tube video's are suddenly downloading as Quicktime movies instead of FLV's. Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it? Quicktime won't play the files. I use safari and snow leopard and all updates are installed. JulieS

There are no preferences for Quicktime 10, only for QT 7.
Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded:

Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
(Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".)
For anything like Flash videos you should use QT 7.
