Can I use Time Capsule with Broadband wireless router that also feeds a PC?

I have just bought Time Capsule but am afraid to open it in case it stops the wireless broadband connection to my Mac and a PC in another room. Any advice?

There is no vpn built into the native firmware of N16 so I presume you are going to use third party.
Just plug in the TC and bridge it.. ie go to Internet tab of airport utility and select connection sharing off.
wireless then you will need to figure out.. you can setup roaming on 2.4ghz by using identical wireless name = ssid and security but lock both to different channels.. pick out of 1, 6, 11
In a PC network make sure you use the TC with a new name.. no spaces no special characters.. same with wireless. TC also restrict wireless on 2.4ghz to only 20mhz.. if you have the N16 set to 40mhz you will have to be extra careful with channels.. 40mhz will use up two channels and only one remains.. so your household will have filled the 2.4ghz.
Someone suggested you can turn off 2.4ghz in the TC by not naming it.. When I try that it kicks up an error that it has to be named. So perhaps someone else has a suggestion of how to turn off 2.4ghz.
You can turn off 5ghz by unchecking it. Seems mighty strange that you cannot turn off 2.4ghz but you can turn off 5ghz.

  • Using Time Capsule with existing wireless router

I am thinking about getting a TC, but I wanted to know if the following configuration would work:
DSL modem to existing wireless B router. Then have the TC recieve internet from the existing wireless router.
Basically I want to put the old router in the basement where the only wiring is, but put the TC upstairs on my desk so I can connect the printer to it.
    Thanks!

Although, you can join an existing network using a Time Capsule as a wireless client, it’s recommended that the existing network is an 802.11n network.

  • Using Time Capsule with 2nd wireless router

    Hi,
I have been trying to extend my time capsule and have had limited luck.
I have my time capsule in my office which is a separate building behind my house. The cable internet service runs to this location. I purchased an airport express and put that in the house so we would have wireless access in the house. I have tried every location available in the house and it is still really slow. (I get a transmit rate of 270 in the office. In the house it ranges from 7 to 20).
So, I was thinking maybe I could run a 30ft or so ethernet cable from the time capsule to another wireless n router in the house. So when out in the office I would connect to the TC and in the house to the Linksys (or whatever I buy). My question: would this even work? Can I have 2 wireless routers and would the Linksys work if it was connected via ethernet to the timecapsule vs. being connected directly to the cable modem?
Alternatively, can you connect 2 cable modems to one incoming cable line if I could find another cable modem somewhere?

    Sure, happy to help.
Temporarily, move the Express close to your computer and connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the Express for the configuration.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Select your AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode...set to Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name...Exact same name as your Time Capsule network
Radio Mode....802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) would be a good choice
    Wireless Channel...Automatic
Wireless Security....Exact same setting as your Time Capsule network
Wireless Password....Exact same setting as your Time Capsule network
    Wireless
    Click the Internet icon
Look for the setting for Connection Sharing at the bottom of the page and set this to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right of the window and close AirPort Utility immediately and disconnect the ethernet cable as soon as you see the message that your settings have been stored.
You can now move the Express to the location you need and connect the ethernet cable and power it up.

can i use time capsule with iphone and ipad and how can i access my data at anywhre using time capsule

TC is not designed for ipad or iphone or any iOS device.
You should use them with cloud if you want remote access to your data do it via cloud.. you cannot easily get remote access to the TC from iOS device.

Can I use time capsule with a USB cellular modem?

No, since the USB port on the Time Capsule will only support a compatible printer and/or hard drive.

  • Can you use Time Capsule with any wifi extender?

Can you use Time capsule with any wifi extenders?

No, since Apple designed their routers to only work with other Apple routers.
I suppose that it is possible that another brand might work, but since you won't know this until you try, it would be a good idea to have a clear understanding of the store's return policy before you decide to gamble.

  • Can i use time capsule for external h drive and also for time machine?

Can i use time capsule for external h drive and also for time machine?

    Hello, vascocaco.
If I understand correctly, you're wondering if you can use your Time Capsule's internal hard disk both for Time Machine backups and as an ordinary drive. Is this your question?
You can, but Time Machine backups may take longer.
To do it, you should partition your Time Capsule's hard disk to create one volume for the backups and one for other files.

  • Can I use Time Capsule with an iPad?

I have music and pictures saved on my iPad, don't use a regular computer.  Can I use Time Capsule to back up those pics and tunes?

    ...(I) don't use a regular computer...
Simple answer: no.  iPad backups are handled through iTunes on a Mac or PC.  The iPad doesn't have any inherent backup capabilities.
In the future, when Apple release iOS5, iCloud and iTunes Match, you may have some capability to backup your songs and pics.  But until that happens, you will need to figure out how to backup those things on your own.  (And even after iClouse and iTunes Match are available, you may still need to find backup procedures for things those services can't backup.

  • Can I Use Time Capsule & My D-link Router At The Same Time?

The subject is my first question my secont question is will time capsule will be comptaibal with all my game systems suck as (wii Ps3 & xbox 360)? thanks in advance

Yes - when you do get a new Mac that supports "n" connections, you can use the Time Capsule as its wireless access point to the internet.
Keep in mind though - most cable and DSL internet connections have a data rate slower than a b/g wireless network connection. You will only make use of n speeds for data transfer between either (a) two n-speed Macs or (b) an n-speed Mac and the Time Capsule hard drive or (c) an n-speed Mac and a Mac cabled to your network. For internet access, n-speed connections will not appear any faster than b/g speed connections.

  • Using Time Capsule as a 'wireless' router and backup using Time Machine

I have a question about backup speed on my 1 TB Time Capsule. I purchased a Time Capsule about a year ago and have an imacg5 and two Mac laptops that I setup to use the wireless router capability and as the backup drive for all three computers.
I was experiencing a problem in that the backups from the imacg5 were never completing even though the Time Machine window said it was only backing up several MBs. In order to 'fix' the problem I finally 'erased' all of the backup files on the Time Capsule using Airport Utility. I had also run Disk Utility on all of the drives to verify and fix any problems.
When I initialized the wireless connections and initiated backups I connected to the imacg5 to the Time Capsule with an ethernet connection as well as via Airport and began 'backing up' my laptops, then started by backing up individually, various disks on my imacg5.
The laptops have rather small disks and backed up rather quickly. The imacg5 has hundreds of GB of data spread across several disks. I had decided to 'backup' the disks individually in case that had been the cause of my original problem.
My systems disk, Macintosh HD, backed up about 110 GB at the rate of 8 GBs per hour. I was encouraged.
My next 'data' disk, LaCie 320 #1, backed up about 209 GB at the rate of 2 GBs per hour. I was confused. This 'backup' took several days to complete. Once it completed, Time Machine has run about every hour as expected and completes the backup in about 3 minutes.
I still have two more disks on the imacg5 to backup. Does anyone have any idea what rate I should expect or should I just add the drives and let it take its course?

    I say just do it!
When connected via ethernet I turn off the airport connection on the computer. I found that frequently my mom's macbook pro would choose the wireless connection to her Time Capsule rather than the ehternet connection to do the back up. This was slower than via the ethernet.

  • Setting up time capsule with existing wireless router and another time capsule

    Hello,
I just bought my first mac (MBP) and a time capsule. We already have a wireless router, and my brother has an imac and his time capsule connected to it. The apple support people said that i couldn't use my new time capsule as a backup for my files because it would have to be in bridge mode and that would cause all sorts of problems and the backup would probably fail. That I would have to use my brother's time capsule to back up my files.
Is this true?? I find it hard to believe this issue hasn;t come up before.
    Thanks,
    Deborah

Thanks, Bob! If I may impose on you a little bit more, would you be able to guide me a little bit in terms of the setup?
Would I need to connect my time capsule directly to the router for first time set up?
If so, would I have to keep it connected to the router all the time after the first time set up, or can I keep it in another room?
Our wireless network was created back when we were a Windows household, so we still control it using Network Magic on an old laptop.
I unlocked the network (using Network Magic) when I tried to set up the Time Capsule (wirelessly, and before calling Apple), and after entering the network password my macbook recognized the TC and I got the good little green light on the TC. As soon as I locked up the network, I got the flashing amber light on the TC and airport utility couldn't find it anymore (using Airport utility version 6.1)... I unlocked the network again, the light turned green. I locked it back up, the light started flashing amber again...
Thanks, I really appreciate your help!
    Deborah

  • Can I use Time Capsule to both wirelessly back up 2 Macs and as a file storage device that both Macs can access wirelessly?

In a perfect world I’d like to be able to download movies and music to my computer, both through iTunes and other ways, but rather than transfer everything to a portable hard drive and then plug the hard drive into a media box to get it on the TV, simply be able to wirelessly move it to the TV, or in the case of music the airport express or some such system.
I’d even like to take this one step further and have a central drive that the home computers are networked to, or at least can access files from (wirelessly), have it backed up to the cloud, and have it be the ‘hub’ for files, music and video.
Can Time Capsule serve this purpose?

Can Time Capsule serve this purpose?
    No .. it cannot.
    Here is why.
The TC can be pressed into service.. it is not designed for it.. and in fact is really poor mainly due to no backup..
You can plug in a USB drive which is slow but does work fine for wireless access.. ie wireless is even slower than the slow disk.
    Take the following into account.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
A much better albeit slower device is the WD MyCloud.
It has no inbuilt wireless but you will just plug it into your wireless router.. hence wireless access.
You should still not use it to store iphoto library.
And the idea of streaming wireless from a central store basically is not going to work. Wireless networking is too slow, and has many limitations.
Buy a Mini and use that as a HTPC or media computer and use it plugged directly into the TV.

  • Can I use Time Capsule as a wireless access point?

I am currently using a DSL modem/wireless router supplied by my ISP.  It is a CenturyLink 660 series.  My plan was to use the Time Capsule not only for back-up but to place it near other devices (my home theater receiver, Dish receiver, etc.) that do not have built in wireless capabilities.  How do I need to configure the TC in order to do this?  Details would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't make clear in the first post that you are wireless bridging .. and no Apple routers cannot be wireless bridged to non-Apple routers. You must run ethernet or have some equivalent.. eg homeplug (EOP) adapters.
But let me add wireless bridging is never a great idea. Using universal bridge or repeater hides the MAC address of all devices behind the bridge. The only way to do this without that problem is WDS. And it is not a proper standard. You will need to check first if the modem support WDS, and with what level security.. many devices only support WEP which is practically leaving the door open nowadays.
Or you pay extra and put another apple router into the mix as wireless AP off the modem.. the TC can bridge to that with full security.
