Can I use Win Xp as a scratch disk?

Just a quickie - Illustrator cs3 is on my apple mac.  But I run Bootcamp and have win XP edition on my partition (this is not the same as parallels where you can switch between operating systems without restarting) bootcamp you have to restart the mac.  But in the preferences under scratch disks it seems to give me the option of win xp in the drop down dialogue to use as a scratch disc.
Thankyou

Not too technical at all.
Scratch Space is used to store common document data like Document size, Color Mode, etc.. data that can be retrieved quicky when needed.
It is set aside when you launch Illustrator, then deleted when you quit Illustrator.
(Photoshop works similarly)

    Hello,
If the drivers for the gigabyte q2006 work on Windows 8.1, then you shouldn't have any trouble with drivers not working in Windows 10. If you do have issues installing the drivers, install them with compatibility mode set to Windows 8.

  • Disk utility "You can't use this version of the application Disk Utility with this version of Mac OSX. You have Disk Utility 12.1"

    I use mountain lion 10.8.1
I try start disk utility it only says: "You can't use this version of the application Disk Utility with this version of Mac OSX. You have Disk Utility 12.1"

To do a Reinstall of the OS boot to the Recovery HD, Command+r key at startup, then select Reinstall Mac OS X. the files will be downloaded from the internet and then the instal will begin.
With Mt Lion it is also available from the Mac App store in your Purchases area. You may be able to download it and then nmanually starting the install while booted to Mt Lion.
But I'd normally use the Recovery HD as that takes the installed OS out of the picture.

  • Can I use an OS X.3.x disk to test and repair a drive with OS X.2.x on it?

Can I use an OS X.3.x disk to test and repair a drive with OS X.2.x on it?
I've recently got a used iMac G4 1GHz with X.2.x on it.  I'd like to test and repair the HD on it, but It didn't come with any OS CDs.
I have X.3.x install DVDs for an eMac.  Can I boot the eMac OS 10.3.x disk from the iMac G4 and use it's Disk Utilities to check and repair the HD on the G4?  I would be using an X.3.x disk to check the X.2.x drive.
    Thanks for any info.

Not sure what (64877) is.  That number just gives this thread in the results, when I put it in the search box here.
Anyway; after reading your reply, I did a yahoo search and found these pages confirming what you posted.
"Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?"

I did the Safe Boot and it didn't take long at all, but then I don't have too much on the drive.
After it booted I noticed the sound was not working, but one page did explain that not everything gets loaded in a Safe Boot.  So after a restart, things seem to be working fine.
    Thanks again for your answer.

  • Use Ext. HD for Scratch Disk

I have to edit a large project.... a very large project.  I have no other option but to use my MacBook Pro, and I wish to use my external hd to save my project and scratch disks.  Whenever I attempt to set my scratch disk to my external drive, PP (CS5) won't allow me to.  Why?  and can I fix this?
*please keep in mind, i'm a beginner PP user (let alone a beginner Adobe user)*

    What KIND of external?
If eSata or Firewire 800 you should be OK... USB is too slow for video editing

  • Can I delete Render files on a scratch disk?

I am using two disks for my scratch disks in Final cut express. The second disk in the list is a backup disk. I noticed that there are files in the render and audio render folders. Is it ok to empty those folders or should they remain there?

Yes, you can safely delete them - render files, cache files, waveform files.
In the event you later find that you need them, they can always be recreated by re-rendering.

  • Can I use Airport Express as a hard disk?

Hi, I'm looking for a product to back up my whole Apple devices. I searched for the cheapest option, and I figured out that there was only 3 different kinds of external drives. But I'm not sure if the Airport Express has something to do with backing up. Is it just for wifi? Can I use it as a hard disk? Or is it the one with the tallest shape which only has storage options?

The AirPort Express cannot support a hard drive, so scratch that one from your list if your requirements call for the ability to attach a hard drive.
The "tall" AirPort Extreme can, if you connect the hard drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
The Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive, available in either 2 TB or 3 TB versions.

  • Can I use OS9 as the start up disk on my Intel Mac?

I have a new Intel iMac. I want to partition my hard drive, install OS9 and run the old system. I know I can't use "classic" on 10.4.7 but I wonder if I could simply install OS9 and reboot my computer. I don't need to move between the two, meaning I don't need to work in OS9 then instantly click and be in 10.4.7. I can deal with the inconvenience of rebooting.
    I'm having 3 problems
#1, I have an old version of Photoshop. I'll buy the newest Photoshop someday but the latest version wasn't made for Intel Macs and it is very expensive. $600. I wonder if it runs slow on Intel Macs. Maybe I should wait for the next version.
#2 I have a great Epson printer (875 DC) but Epson has not updated the print drivers for this model and probably won't. OK fine I can buy a newer better photo printer $550.
#3 I have a "Nikon Coolscan 4000" film Scanner $1,300. This scanner is great in OS9 but the thing never worked in OS10 and now that I have this Intel iMac I downloaded the latest software update and the thing still doesn’t work and if the computer sleeps while the Nikon software is open it won't wake up and I have to restart.
To sum everything up, can I run OS9 on my Intel iMac? I don't care if I have to work in OS9 then shut down and restart to work in 10.4.7 Can this Intel iMac understand OS9. If I try to restart using OS9 as the startup disk will I damage the computer? Will I screw things up and have to spend hours and days removing files and correcting problems?
I feel like this computer is a fresh clean new baby and I'm afraid that if I start messing around with it I'll regret it.

    Hello,
I have a new Intel iMac. I want to partition my hard
drive, install OS9 and run the old system. I know I
can't use "classic" on 10.4.7 but I wonder if I could
simply install OS9 and reboot my computer.
The problem here, is that the OS 9 environment / Operating System will only run on a PowerPC processor.
The only reason that OS X will run on either processor, is that it was specifically designed to do so from the beginning.
But, OS 9 and older were specifically written for the PowerPC / Motorola processors.
So, you will need a machine with a PowerPC processor to run OS 9.
Currently, there is one program that will enable OS 9 to run on an Intel Mac. But, it requires making a copy of the Power Macintosh ROM. So, it's legal use is questionable at best.
    http://www.gibix.net/projects/sheepshaver/
This program works by emulating the PowerPC processor. And, it is reported to operate at roughly 1/8-th of native speeds. So, it could be pretty slow for productive photo work.

$600. I wonder if it runs slow on Intel Macs. Maybe I

If it is a Mac OS X version, then it will run on the Intel systems. But, yes it will be slower. Usable, but slower.
I haven't tried this program, so I cannot personally comment on it. But, even Steve Jobs admitted it was slow on the Intel Macs.
#2 I have a great Epson printer (875 DC) but Epson
has not updated the print drivers for this model and
probably won't. OK fine I can buy a newer better
    photo printer $550.
OS X comes with drivers for the Epson Stylus Photo 875. They are provided by the Gimp-Print layer. But, installed / select just like any other printer. So, as long as you can connect the printer using USB, then you can select the driver for the 875 and be fine (as long as this is the same printer).
Otherwise, some people have reportedly installed PowerPC print drivers without trouble. I haven't tried it myself.

As mentioned above, the only method currently available to use OS 9 on an Intel system is that SheepShaver program.
But, I would not expect good results with it for your uses. And, it's legal status would be questionable since you need to copy a ROM file from another Mac to use it (which goes against Apple's license agreement).
I feel like this computer is a fresh clean new baby
and I'm afraid that if I start messing around with it
    I'll regret it.
Just make sure you have a good backup of everything before you start experimenting.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can I use iTunes 7.4.3 Restore Disks to transfer/mirror PC to LTop library?

I have 2 libraries for my Ipod Touch. One on my home PC,(with my downloaded personal CD collection)+ purchased Content. The other on my work Laptop with only Purchased Content I have been a able to transfer via Ipod.
Here is my question, instead of copying every disc into my Laptop to match my home library. Can I use the restore disks I just created, (that took 6 hours!) to transfer all my downloaded non-purchased content? Is this going to mess things up? I just need to know what you guys think about this? Thanks soo much in advance! Caswa

  • Can I use my old macbook as a disk drive for my new iMac?

My husband just bought me a new new iMac (yey!) but had assumed it would have a dvd drive (as you do).  It doesn't.  So can I use my old Macbook to upload cds and dvds and somehow import to my itunes on my new computer?

As long as your Macbook is up-to-date.  Go to system preferences>Internet and Wireless>Sharing>check mark CD/DVD sharing.

  • Can I use a mac pro operating system disk to upgrade a macbook

I need to upgrade my 10.5.8 system to 10.6 before I can upgrade to Lion. I have a mac pro operating system disk for 10.6 can I use this?

No. The gray-colored restore DVDs provided with a Mac are not the retail OS version. They contain only the drivers applicable for the purchased hardware, and the installer has a function to verify the hardware is of the type the disk was created for. If you attempt to use the Mac Pro restore disk on a different model Mac, it will simply refuse to install.

  • Can I use the 10.4 DVD's Disk Utility to Repair 10.3.9 Boot Drive

Can I use the Disk Utility from my 10.4 DVD (by holding down C) to repair the boot drive of my friend's 10.3.9 iBook G3?
    Thanks in advance-
    Eric

Unless you have a Tiger (10.4) retail install package, I don't believe so but I'm not positive.
Did your friend lose his/her Panther install package?
If so, he/she can use fsck instead.
fsck is a command-line utility that may be able to verify and repair a disk. If you can successfully start up in Safe Mode or use Disk Utility while started up from a disc, you don't need to use fsck. However, here are some situations in which fsck may be necessary.
Your Mac OS X disc isn't available.
    Your optical drive isn't available.
You can't start with a Safe Boot.

  • Can I use time capsule as an external disk only (not as a wireless router)

how can I use my time capsule as an external disk only. I have had problems with time capsule as a wifi router.

Sure.. but it is still a network drive and must use wireless or ethernet.. the best way is plugged into the main router in bridge mode.. but you can use it in secondary network.. although the setup is more complicated.
It is also less good than a simple external drive.. which is cheaper, faster and more reliable. Consider if the TC doesn't suit your needs get rid of it and opt for simple external drive.

  • Can I use WIN 8.1 drivers for WIN 7 ?

    I have HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-p147ne
it is coming with windows 8.1
I've installed widows 7 on it, coppied the drivers from win 8.1
now when I installed the drivers on win 7 , it keeps telling me that these drivers may crash the system
I continued the process >> updated the drivers after installation
    windows is now working
    The question is
Are these drivers (which are extracted from windows 8.1) will affect the hardwares of the PC ??? even if they are not designed for win 7 ?
will there be any problem in the performence ?

    Hi:
If the drivers are working, then you can reasonably expect them to continue working.
If you ever have a problem with the performance or drivers, etc., you can use all of the W7 x64 drivers and software from this model on yours except the BIOS and firmware files).

  • Can I use Win Xp setup apllication, found in "I386" folder?

Is it all possible, to reinstall win xp using the setup file found in the I386 file on my harddrive, it asks for a cab1 file, but I can only assume it has only been extracted as there are a load of files with the last letter of their file name replaced by an underscore, if not is there a way to reinstall from the recovery CD's without reformatting, and recreating the partition on my harddrive>

    Hello Evan
As far as I know it is not possible to reinstall the unit using I386 folder. For installation you should use recovery CD. Before the OS installation the partition must be reformatted but it must NOT be recreated (free space changing).
In this case you must use Expert mode installation and you will be able to install the OS on persisting partition (C).
Please do not choose the option to create a new partition because on this way the whole HDD will be formatted, just installation on persisting partition.
