Can i video edit on the I book?

Hello,
i was in my local apple store looking at the base model apple iBook, the one with the 12" screen and combo drive. I asked about video editing and the guy said yes it can do it as there is software included for this. I have my doubts and i dont really see how this machine has enough power to video edit say an hours worth of video at reasonable speed. I am in the market for a new latop and im stuck between the ibook (base model) and
this Toshiba new model

They are both similar prices in the UK, the Tosh being a little bit more expensive but it seems like a way more powerful machine. Ive never had a Mac before..all feedback welcome

All Apple computers come with iMovie that will allow you to edit DV movies. I have a 1.0GHz G4 12" PowerBook and I use it often to edit DV with Final Cut Express and DVD Studio Pro. Certainly one of the current iBook G4s with a 1.33GHz G4 processor could do an even better job. Apple has worked hard to make sure their hardware and software is capable of being your "digital hub" and this includes video. The only restriction you might have is hard drive size. DV can take up quite a bit of hard drive space. Get the largest capacity hard drive you can. You will probably also want to increase your RAM, but you can do that later. It's more difficult to get a bigger internal hard drive.

  • Mobile Video Editing on the Macbook Pro 13'' - Some questions...

This is my first time visiting this forum, and I just wanted to get some thoughts on a mobile video editing setup I am looking to create... Here's what I'd like to do:
    - Use a Macbook Pro 13'' as my primary editing machine using Final Cut Studio for relatively small, but important projects.
    - I want to be able to edit as speedily as possible, but on a moderate budget. I know that keeping FCS on the MBP's main HD and editing video on an external drive is the best way to go. Also, because the fastest interface option on a MBP is Firewire 800, I am thinking of using a G-Raid Mini 500GB drive in Raid 0 for both maximum speed and portability. But I also want to be able to easily backup any video edited on the external drive. I am weary of the fact that MBP only has 1 Firewire port (and in this scenario, I need to connect a G-Raid drive, a DV camera, and yet another external drive for backing up the G-Raid Mini)
    Oh what a pain.
First, something I can't seem to find out is... if I want to load video to the G-Raid drive, I'm going to have to daisy chain my DV camera to it. If the DV camera is Firewire 400, will this lower the Firewire 800's port on the MBP down to 400 as well, thus kind of crippling the idea of speedy Raid 0?
And second, assuming I can hook up both the G-Raid and the DV camera to the Firewire 800 port without degrading speed... what would the best way be to go for backing up the G-Raid? I am thinking of using a USB 2.0 500GB drive, and using some sort of backup automation software. Any suggestions there?
What I'm looking for is mobility, functionality, secure backup for everything I shoot. I should have gone for a MBP 17'' with a Express slot, which would solve these potential issues... but again, I'm on a budget - and can't break the bank on this right now.
Any responses or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Zac

    Thanks for the response.
But a couple things... the reason I'm going with the 13'' is purely out of circumstance. I have a friend who just didn't want it anymore, and is selling it to me insanely cheap. Also, I already have extra monitors
I think what I am going to do is this:
G-RAID 500GB running in Raid-0 connected to the FW800 port. From there, when I need to capture, I will daisy chain the DVX-100 to the G-RAID... which will cut the FW down 400 from what I have read. After my video is captured, I will disconnect the DVX100, so I can get the FW800 G-RAID back up to proper speed during actual editing. When I want to do backups, I will connect a regular 500GB G-DRIVE and run a clone of the G-RAID everynight after I finish editing.
This solves a few problems, but it doesn't solve the issue of an external TV for native viewing while editing. Personally, I don't think I will always need this, but my DVX100 does do passthrough. (anytime I do it though, it will bump my FW speed back down to 400) So I can either do that, or I can look into S-Video USB options (which I haven't researched yet)
It won't be the most ideal setup in the world, but it seems like a lot of people with these newer Macbook Pro's are suffering the same kinds of issues. Hopefully I will manage.
If anyone has any further suggestions, please let me know. Anyone else with a Macbook Pro 13''? What kind of mobile setups have you come up with?

  • Why can't I edit or delete Address Book "On My Mac" or sync with iCloud?

Why can't I edit or delete Address Book cards on my Macs, now that I've migrated to iCloud?  I can edit/delete if I go to iCloud, but the changes don't sync with my Macs.  What's happening, and what's a solution?  Just wait for Apple to fix a bug?

On your mac, if your look at the left panel of the Address Book, you'll find general categories of "iCloud" and possibly "On my mac" - if you have contacts in the latter, then they are only local to your mac, they are not shared with iCloud.  If you don't have an "iCloud" category, then your mac(s) is not set up of iCloud.  Go to system preferences and look in iCloud.  Is the mac signed into iCloud, are contacts turned on for syncing?

    Hi,
I have just checked at my end and it seems everything is working fine and I am able to edit even the English version pages.
Can you please try some other browser or in a different system to edit your site and check if you are able to do so.
    Regards,

  • For video editing, is the new 13" MBP enough? Or should I go for 15"?

For video editing, I will be using both Final Cut Pro 7, and Adobe CS5.
Is the new 13" Macbook Pro enough? I'm asking both for the lower-end and higher-end 13". Or should I just go with the 15"?
I'm just seeking for opinions from more experienced mac users, since this is my first transfer from Windows to Mac. Also, I'm taking into consideration in the price difference among these different models.
    Thank you very much

It will render much faster on the new quad cores then any other MBP ever made. This new release is really a pretty major deal in the laptop world to my thinking. If I didn't just get a new iMac, I would be probably getting one. I don't do a lot of video and I use FCE not Pro so my need isn't as great, but I do a lot of photography and with several things open at once so the power matched with sufficient ram is pretty amazing. But is it absolutely a must? I had a friend who just until this year was a film music editor and he was using Pro Tools on a G4 Power Book though he had to start working around the machine limitations at the end of the day, but it is possible. Still for the money, the new machines are a great deal at pretty much the same price as what they are replacing. I know I'm advocating here, but I'm just a user not and employee:)

  • Is there a guide to iMovie 11 for someone who understands video editing in the normal way?

Yesterday, for the very first time, I used iMovie 11.  My son shot a little video on his iPod Touch, and then wanted to play around with the titles and transitions a bit more than the iPod would afford.  So, we did the import via iTunes dance, and opened it on the Mac in iMovie 11.  Here's where the fun ended.
I've done small projects in FCE or FCP before, and iMovie before them.  Since we were using the Mac our kids use, it didn't have FCP on it. It was a great little tool for simple projects.  The last time I used iMovie was iMovie 6.  iMovie 11 feels like a hamfisted disaster by comparison.
The project imported just fine.  But then I was left with a string of clips that I can't put transitions into, add titles to, or anything useful.  No indication of how long the movie would be is visible.  I clicked a number of menus, looked around, and couldn't find anything.  I Googled.  I found an Apple KB article that suggested I can control automatic transitions with the project theme settings.  Oh wait, that menu option is greyed out.
Click some more buttons that have no discernable purpose, and whammo, the project list is replaced by something that looks like a timeline without any notion of time.  Now I can add titles and transitions.  So, I output the movie and finally, we're done.  I sent my son out of the room while I cursed at the seemingly brain dead software.  My wife had a bit of a laugh at that.
So, is there some sort of tutorial for iMovie 11 that's aimed at people who aren't the "ooh, shiny!  video!" type?

  • Computer for Video Editing for the Present and Beyond

In an earlier post I announced that I have been a Premiere Elements user since Day One, and I also mentioned I was looking to have a new computer built from scratch rather than purchase from Dell or HP. I am close to finalizing that build, and am looking forward to upgrading to Elements 8.0. I am also looking forward to becoming a subscriber to Muvipix.com. Becoming a part of the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum coupled with being an eventual subscriber to Muvipix.com has elevated my enthusiasm for video editing. Special Thanks go to Bill Hunt and Steve Grisetti for anchoring this Adobe Pre E Forum. Your advice has motivated me to take my video editing with Premiere Elements to another level.
Speaking of advice, what does everyone think of the following specifications for my new computer? Is this a solid computer for video editing? In some cases some components lack specificity (model numbers, brand names, et cetera). Suggestions and comments will be greatly appreciated as I take this final step. Thanks to all!
    ATX Antec     193 Computer Case
    X58 ASUS      Motherboard
    Core      i7- 930 Processor (1366)

I read your computer spec sheet. Thanks for sharing. You  said the ideal thing to do is use the computer just for video editing.  Best way to go. However, you still need an OS, which requires updates.  And you need to update drivers, and then there are product updates and  add-ons. You need to connect with the Internet to do all of this
I do not have $$ or space to have 2 computers, so my single computer is for day to day work, and video editing as a hobbyist... which of course is not "ideal" for video editing... but I don't make $$ at this, so I use what I have
I am still learning about Win7 64bit, so do not have all the startup process optimized... that is my next project, to figure out what does not need to be running, and remove that un-needed stuff from the startup
You also asked about backup... the IMAGE program I use is mentioned in http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM#SmartOwn

  • Yosemite downloaded and installed than Black screen.  all we have is a black screen. Traveling in Indonesia so no Apple store nearby. The screen does not respond to reboot in safe mode. Can anyone help to get the Mac Book Pro up and running again?

We are in indonesia travelling and after downloading and installing Yosemite, on our next restart the screen went black and responds to nothing. Tried to reboot (shift key) in safe mode after first crashing the system but nothing responds except for the opening chime. Toal disaster so any help will be greatly appreciated. Judging by the comments I have read, Yosemite seems to have many issues for us to look forward to, if and when we can bring back the Mac Book Pro to life.

See if you can boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down).  There you can reinstall the system.

I am having a problem deleting all but one particular mail message from my inbox. I delete by either using the trash can icon for individual mail, or using edit, selecting the mail message (s) and clicking delete.  However there is this one mail message that will not go away regardles of what I do including deleting all from the trash.  Any ideas?

I get that every once in a while on my 3GS, and that's what I do to get rid of it. Probably not a bad idea to power down the phone every so often, anyway, gets rid of any crud waiting to cause a bug.
Glad to hear that it worked for you.

I want to video chat with my moms new iPad but I cant get facetime on my mac... Please help

As Roaminggnome suggests, the iPhone version of Skype works well on the iPad.  It can be expanded to fit the screen, but the picture is slightly sharper at the smaller size.
I understand there are also video chat Apps from Google and Microsoft.

  • Seeking Laptop Recommendations For Video Editing On-The-Go (Around $1,000)

    Hi there,
I am seeking recommendations for a laptop great for video editing. I am a YouTuber with an on-the-go lifestyle.
    Budget is $1,000ish.
I need to be able to physically lock the laptop with one of those holes on the side.
I want to be able to multi-task well by having a variety of programs open at once.
    Thanks for the help.

Well that is a tall request   Take a look at this factory refurbished starter unit.  I acquired a similar refurbished unit just a year ago and upgraded it with more RAM and SSD drives.  The upgrade process is extremely simple.  You could start with the unmodified unit and as you run into performance problems upgrade gradually.  My laptop is now editing three camera timelines of AVCHD 1920 x 1080 with ease.  I now have 24 GB of RAM and got rid of the 1 TB 5400 rpm by cloning it to a 128 GB SSD drive and adding a second very good SSD in the available port.  Removing one screw gives you full access to do this.  Here is a picture of the bottom of my laptop.
Edit, I just checked and it does have a Kensington security slot
You do realize that the only way to do video editing is to have the laptop AC powered.
