Can I vpn to an afp service on the same machine?
I have an XServe running 10.4.11 with AFP, httpd, and the firewall service. I've configured the firewall to only allow connections to the file share from our local network. This works fine. I want to setup vpn service so users can connect to file share remotely. I've turned on vpn and configured it, and clients can connect. They receive unused static ips on our local network. However when I try to connect to the server afp service from the client I get no response, it times out. I read another thread here which indicated I cannot use the vpn service to connect to another service running at the same ip address (VPN working in reverse!?). OK that makes sense. So I thought about running VPN on the second network interface (XServe with two nics, different ips). However in reading the 10.4 Server manual it says it's not possible to run services on different network interfaces, all services run on all network interfaces. This matches what I'm seeing in Server Admin. So does that mean what I am trying to do is impossible using only one machine?
Regarding running both the vmserver and the vmmanager on the same machine - I have this running. Maybe not the best architectural decision but I only have one large server for my testing. I don't remember excatly what i did but I got inspired form the folloeing post in the forum Simple VM-Manager install . I also added more memory to the dom0 domain to enable the much higher memory usage because of the vmmanager running there.

But if you wish to do so, you can create multiple domains under the
same installation, say one for dev and one for prod. On the same
machine make sure they listen on different ports. This, of course,
ties you to the same version for development and production - making
it impossible to upgrade just one.
You may be able to do two completely different installations (i.e.
different BEA HOMEs) on the same machine - I haven't tried this but it
looks possible. This would mean you could upgrade each separately. The
presence of BEAHOMELIST in the registry on NT seems to indicate this
should work.

Can't run wiki and web services at the same time?
I'm a newbie with Lion Server, but I've been running several web sites successfully for about 6 months. I'm up to Server 10.7.4.
I've been trying ever since the first installation of Server to get the wiki service running. I had absolutely no luck until I turned OFF the web service (always got the "URL does not exist" error when I tried to create a group wiki from inside the Server app). With the web service off, it all starts up fine and I created my first wiki (woohoo). Turning web service back on kills access to the wiki. I don't find reference to this in any of the dicussions, and especially not in Apple's documentation.
Are the Wiki and Web services mutually exclusive? Or is there a way around this?
I'm using Dyndns to provide me with sub-domains to use, and I've dedicated one of them to the wiki service. Traffic comes in on port 8080, where my web sites are on port 80.
Thanks for any pointers...
edbokLR supports tethering using a Canon DLL and EOS Utility probably also supports tethering or at least uses something from a similar Canon DLL. You probably cannot have two different versions of that DLL loaded at the same time, so it makes sense there are problems.

Can 2 separate Planning Servers be running on the same machine?
Dear All,
We are trying to setup Hyperion DEV and SIT environments into the same AIX server. We have
Shared Services
Essbase
EAS
APS
Financial Reporting
Planning
Oracle Application Server 10g
Oracle 10g DB
We use 2 separate user accounts and different HYPERION_HOME and ORACLE_HOME.
Everything seems fine except the Business Rule. When trying to pick the Planning locations, it's always pointing to the first instance of the Planning server.
I think it is related to the RMI registry service which is used to establish a communication between Planning, Essbase and HBR/EAS.
I am also running 2 RMI registry services on two different port. However, how can we tell the Planning, HBR/EAS to use which one for communication.
Any idea?I found that the table HEAS.HBRPLUGINDATA contains the correct Planning RMI Port. It seems that EAS is talking with the correct RMI and Essbase Server.
I can submit business rule in Planning. However, I still can't submit business rule in EAS. Any idea? -
Can I use FCX for multiple users on the same machine?
I have one mac pro, and two video cmpanies. I have two users on my machine and would like to set up two different final cut x workplatforms. Is that possible?
Of course, you can use FCP X from two different user accounts on your machine. The question here, I believe, is how to separate the content that each user accesses.
One obvious way to achieve that would be to store the content in the system disk - that would put events and projects in each user's Movies folder. But that is a bad option, for performance reasons, and more.
You could have separate external disks for each user to store his content.
Also, you could use different disk images which could, say, be all stored in the same internal (but not system) drive. -
Problem: Project can't connect to WCF RESTful service in the same solution
I followed the instruction in "Consuming
a RESTful web service with jQuery and Ajax" on the blog of Dedra L. Welch and created in my solution a WFC Web Application (RestService)
and a ASP.NET Empty Website (TestClient), but the client website couldn't connect to the service. I'm not sure did the jQuery function even run at all.Hi blue_lightning,
>>but the client website couldn't connect to the service. I'm not sure did the jQuery function even run at all.
First please try to follow the blog step by step to see if it works.
Then please try to use the fiddler to help you detect if the service is run or not. Or you can just use a Get method in your web service to test if you can broswer it in the broswer. If you can get the right value with the Get method, then it means
that your service should run.

Can I install OBIEE 10g and 11g on the same machine?
While I'm waiting for new hardware, I wanted to get started on installing OBIEE 11g on my laptop. Can I do this if I already have 10g installed?
I want to make sure if I install it that it will not impact my current 10g setup. I'm not sure if it overrides certain files and folders or if I can do a separate installation to have both.Hello everyone.
I have OBIEE 10g on my Production box pointing to the Oracle Database 11g R1 which is also having OWB integrated in it.
Now, I am planning to upgrade OBIEE 10g to 11g and Oracle Database from 11g R1 to 11g R2, so that OWB will also be upgarded, as it is integrated in 11gR2.
I am confused about, how to run RCU on the database, as OBIEE 10g schemas and packages will already be there in the database.
If I run RCU again, what will it do???
Has anyone done this before? or any good document available ?
Many Thanks,
Ahsan. -
How can I run both Leopard and Panther on the same machine?
Hi,
I currently have a Powermac G5 with Leopard running nicely on it. I have 2 hard disks.
What I would like to do is install OS X 10.3 on the machine so that I can switch between the environments - please can someone explain how to do this?
I'm assuming I need to partition one of the hard drives and have done with the second hard disk (not the startup disk), but I'm nervous about what to do from there and really don't want to mess up what I've already got - please help!!
Many thanks.if you have two hard drives the easiest might be to install panther on the second hard drive. this way you don't have top partition anything. make sure the drive is properly formatted it should be formatted mac os extended journaled with APM partition scheme. then just boot from the Panther install disk and install panther on the second drive. note that this will only work if your mac originally came with panther. did it?
to switch between installs you can change the startup disk in system preferences->startup disk. then reboot. alternatively, reboot normally and hold option at the chime. this will boot you into startup disk manager where you can choose which drive to boot from. -
HT4818 Can you use both Bootcamp and Parallels with the same Windows 7 installed
I have Parallels installed with Windows 7. Can I use both Bootcamp and Parallels on the same machine depending on whether I just want to work in Windows all day (Bootcamp) or alternate during the same session (Parallels)?
You can, yes. But there is a complication: once you activate windows it will only be activated for one of the two methods you use. So, let's say you install into boot camp and activate windows. You can then install Parallels and it will find your boot camp installation, but when running in Parallels, Windows will report that it is not activated. Or, you can activate it in Parallels and when running in Boot Camp Windows will report that it is not activated. The reason for this is because Windows thinks it is running on different computers depending on how you boot it. This may not be an issue for you if you run Windows a lot one way and just occasionally the other way, so be sure to activate Windows in whichever method you use more often. Hope this helps!

Can smb and afp coexist on the same host?
Greetings all!
I've been using Macs and OSX for a year. And recently I bought another MBP so I am seriously considering Time Machine backups. I have a Linux home server running Ubuntu 12.04 and Samba and my previous MBP running Mountain Lion connects to it happily without any problem. But my trouble started when I tried to setup afp on the same box.
I followed this post and this post and got the fake time capsule showing in Time Machine without any problem. But soon I found myself unable to connect to the old samba shares. The smb host now displays as a Time Capsule. If I click on that OSX will say 'failed to connect'.
As I understand there are 2 pieces involved on the server side, avahi to broadcast the service info and netatalk to provide the service itself. It's a bit like nmbd and smbd in Samba. If this is true then it's somewhat understandable that OSX can not display the same host as 2 different types of services at the same time. So I stopped avahi-daemon and very soon the old Samba shares appeared again.
I am able to connect to both services using command+k but I would rather have them running normally so that my wife will be able to use them without extra tech support. Can anyone tell me if what I said above is true and/or if there is a graceful way around this? If answer is no then I will have to create a virtual machine or nic alias just for time machine and I think it's quite a waste.
Thanks!tristonej wrote:
I don't quite understand why people buying non-Apple devices should not expect OSX to work with them
Because Apple has no control over 3rd parties. They can do what they want. If Apple publishes a new authentication mechanism in 2002, the 3rd party doesn't have to implement it. That isn't Apple's fault. If they do get around to supporting it in 2009 and then some 4th party doesn't bother to use the 2009 code in 2011, Apple still can't do anything about that. If anyone else wants to advertise, and support, Time Machine compatibility, they are welcome to do that. They definitely have the advertising part down, the support, not so much.
There is a time when apple only worked with apple but that aparently was not sustainable. And that's why now Apple is embracing smb
Apple's goal is to choose the best solution for its customers. Sometimes that is a proprietary connection or protocol and sometimes it is something industry standard. In all cases, there has to be some cut off for testing and support. That is why Apple eventually stops supporting its own hardware and technologies at a certain point. That is also why Apple will support SMB as deployed by Microsoft but isn't going to waste much time on home-built Linux servers.
(it's said even samba was used shortly on OSX, not quite sure) and allow users to install windows on macs. Even OSX itselt is based on FreeBSD and uses quite a lot of open source components.
Apple uses a lot of open source software. Samba was one of those projects. Unfortunately, the people that made those products didn't want Apple using them so they changed the licensing to prohibit Apple (and pretty much only Apple) from using their source code. That is why some of the open source packages in OS X are stuck in a 2007 version. That is also why Apple abandonned Samba and wrote its own SMB implementation.
OS X is not based on FreeBSD. It has a BSD-flavoured POSIX layer, but it is a distinct operating system at its core.
IMHO there is no magic in throwing money at propiretary hardware/software or praying to Steve Jobs. If something is not working, it must be that there is a bug in the code or the design. And neither OSX nor Macs are built by God, which means they are bugged as other software/hardware.
I'm confused. When did anyone say anything about praying to Steve Jobs or divine technology? You asked about using Linux as a Time Machine server. I suggested you avoid that if you value your data. I also asked why you would want to keep running Linux now that you have a Mac. A Mac can do anything Linux can do with a fraction of the effort.
The answer is simple, Macs can not do what I want.
Which is?
Withe a standard mATX case I can have quite a few 3.5" drive bays while there is only one 2.5" in a Mac mini. And with Ubuntu/Debian, getting/updating the software or the system is quite easy, just one or a few lines of apt commands, not quite possible with OSX.
That's certainly true. OS X updates itself without having to run any apt commands.
If you must compile something from the source to get a Linux running then something must be seriously wrong.
My thoughts exactly. But perhaps you didn't follow me entirely. Apt, yum, etc don't have everything one needs to setup something as fancy as, I don't know, a web server. While I did have to compile a number of things from source, I had to actually edit the source a couple of times as well.
The best thing I love about Linux is openess. You can customize almost everything and change it whatever way you want. With Mac, for example the 2013 Retina MBP I just bought, it's not even possible to change the power button behavior, which is very annoying.
Then why did you buy a Mac? That's no big secret. Some people like not have to configure everything just to get it running. I have other things to do than edit config files.
Back to my original question. I think the problem is not quite with compatibility of Bonjor but rather whether OSX can show this or not. Imagine you have a smb share and afp share on the same host, with the same name, how would OSX display it? And which icon will OSX use to display the host? I can not think of the answer so if you know please tell me.
OS X will just display it like it display any server. One of your links event has instructions on how to pick the icon you want to fake. If you are running both services then I am not sure which one it would try to connect with. Neither of your services are native, not matter how much they try to fake it. If you wanted a specific service you would have to manually use the correct protocol in Finder > Go > Connect to Server. However, bot of those links were posted before Mavericks. Obviously they don't work anymore. It's Linux. It's open. Right? So fix it and post it on your own blog. I do not know what modifications you would have to make to either Samba or Netatalk to make them work with Mavericks.
If all you need is to allow your wife to connect to one specific protocol, then manually connect to that service, saving your password in the keychain, and create an alias by Command-option dragging the server to some other folder. Then, she can just double-click on the alias to connect to the network.
Now, if you really want to be clever, you can setup an automount to that service instead. Then the server will be mounted and unmounted as needed. -
How can I using tpcall from one service to another service in the same server

ok. However,
when I using tpcall from one service to another service, it's failed?
anybody can tell me why?Basically, tpcall:ing another service in the same server is a no-no, unless you
a) are running a multi-threaded server (requires TUXEDO 7 or newer + compilation
options) or
b) use tpacall() instead of tpcall() and specify the flag TPNOREPLY. This is probably
not what you want to accomplish, though.
The reason is that TUXEDO servers by default (and always in versions before 7)
are single-threaded. If service A and B both reside in server X, server X will
be busy taking care of the call to A. If A makes a call to B, the call will be
put on the queue to X, but X will not look at the queue until it is done with
A, which won't happen until B returns... deadlock!
You can play tricks with starting multiple instances of X, but in the end you
will always face a risk (something lika a race-condition) for a dead-lock.
Solution: Move service B to another server (usually quite easy) OR switch to multi-threading,
if that's possible. Just make sure all code your service calls is MT-safe as well...
thanks

Can you have two services on the same IP within the CFE?
Hi,
I am testing AccAD and have come across a situation where we have two HTTP SAP systems, one portal and one SRM, that have the same destination host, ie http://testapp. But a end user will access each system via the URL's http://testapp:9010 and http://testapp:9015.
I can get AccAD to connect to both different apps by changing the DNS but inside one of the apps it will call the other using http://testapp:9010. so unless I change the internal config one app can not call the other.
So what I would like AccAD to do is call app1 via http://testapp:9015 and the other via http://testapp:9010 where defined in AccAD the hostname testapp is the same IP address.
Any clues and sorry if the problem explaination is confusing?
Regards
Brian LaneHi Brian,
I checked your question with the development team, and here's the response:
If you define 2 service types under the same server then you will have delivered services on the same IP address.
The only thing that you need to consider is that the 2 service types will have the different ports.
Define one service type with port 9010 and another one with 9015.
After this step, as usual, please add both service types to the server and define remote offices.
On the CFE you can then do: netstat -ntl
You will see the same IP address listening to 2 different ports.
Hope this helps, best regards

And both of the others wouldn't connect for a few minutes, but are now working again.
More suprising is that trying to log in to webmail (www.icloud.com) is giving a very unhelpful error message, suggesting the server is down. Everything else Internet is working fine for me, and haven't changed any settings, so fairly sure problem is Apple's end.
It's possible that your iPhone is collecting your mail via a different server route that is still working; my three iCloud accounts are collecting via p02.imap.mail.me.com, p09.imap.mail.me.com and p99.imap.mail.me.com, and it's only p02 that's consistantly not working. -
Now that the photo gallery in MobileMe is ending, is there another photo sharing site to which existing iPhoto albums can be transferred as is, with photos in the same order and with titles, and with minimal problems?
No. If you don't have the album you originally used to create the galleries you can do so by dragging the photos from each gallery to a new, empty album. Then when you find the photo sharing site/option you have decided on you can easily upload each album to the site.
Another option is to obtain a hosting service and create iWeb photo pages for each album and future albums similar to this photo page in one of my demo sites: iPhoto Book as an iWeb Slideshow. Or you can use the iWeb album page and have an album for each iPhoto album on it like on this demo page: Page-7 .

IB Queue: Can a Queue be Unordered and Partitioned at the same same time?
Hi,
My question is related to Unordered Queue:
Can a Queue be Unordered and Partitioned at the same same time?
From PeopleBooks: Managing Service Operation Queues
"Unordered:
Select to enable field partioning and to process service operations unordered.
By default, the check box is cleared and inbound service operations that are assigned to a queue are processed one at a time sequentially in the order that they are sent.
Select to force the channel to handle all of its service operations in parallel (unordered), which does not guarantee a particular processing sequence. This disables the channel’s partitioning fields.
Clear this check box if you want all of the queues’s service operations processed sequentially or if you want to use the partitioning fields."
This seems to indicate that Unordered queues don't use partitioned fields. Yet, there are a few delivered Queues that are Unordered and have one or more Partition fields selected.

How does partitioning work in this case? Or is partitioning ignored in such cases?
Thanks!I guess you could use reflection and do something like the following:
import java.lang.reflect.Constructor ;
import java.lang.reflect.Method ;
public class MyClass<T> implements Cloneable {
T a ;
public MyClass ( final T a ) {
// super ( ) ; // Superfluous
this.a = a ;
public MyClass<T> clone ( ) {
MyClass<T> o = null ;
try { o = (MyClass<T>) super.clone ( ) ; }
catch ( Exception e ) { e.printStackTrace ( ) ; System.exit ( 1 ) ; }
o.a = null ;
// See if there is an accessible clone method and if there is use it.
Class<T> c = (Class<T>) a.getClass ( ) ;
Method m = null ;
try {
m = c.getMethod ( "clone" ) ;
o.a = (T) m.invoke ( a ) ;
} catch ( NoSuchMethodException nsme ) {
System.err.println ( "NoSuchMethodException on clone." ) ;
// See if there is a copy constructor an if so use it.
Constructor<T> constructor = null ;
try {
System.err.println ( c.getName ( ) ) ;
constructor = c.getConstructor ( c ) ;
o.a = constructor.newInstance ( a ) ;
} catch ( Exception e ) { e.printStackTrace ( ) ; System.exit ( 1 ) ; }
} catch ( Exception e ) { e.printStackTrace ( ) ; System.exit ( 1 ) ; }
return o ;
public String toString ( ) { return "[ " + ( ( a == null ) ? "" : a.toString ( ) ) + " ]" ; }
public static void main ( final String[] args ) {
MyClass<String> foo = new MyClass<String> ( "zero" ) ;
MyClass<String> fooClone = foo.clone ( ) ;
System.out.println ( "foo = " + foo ) ;
System.out.println ( "fooClone = " + fooClone ) ;
}
