Can I watch Cable TV on my MacBook?

So I have a MacBook (Snow Leaopard) and I have cable TV, but I don't have a TV. I wanted to know if there was anyway I could plug my laptop to the cable so that I can watch cable TV on my laptop.

...I know it only works with Windows, so I could just use it on my Windows partition, right?
You could, but do you really want to have to leave OSX every time you want to watch TV?
If you do decide to use a Windows tuner, make sure your Boot Camp partition has a lot of free hard drive space. TV tuners work by taking the video stream and saving it to a temporary file, and displaying the contents of the file in real time. (This is how they're able to pause live TV.) But that means that you need a lot of scratch space on the hard drive. And Windows really doesn't like not having free space. I'd recommend always having 10GB or more of free space when watching TV. I've done it on less, but Windows tended to freeze.

  • Watching cable tv on the macbook

I see plenty of forums about connecting the macbook to your tv, but I'd like to use the macbook AS a tv. My buddy, who is a PC guy, has his cable (tv connection) plugged into his pc and can watch the cable channels on his monitor. The instructions I found online for how to hook this up mentioned that it doesn't work for a mac. Is this true? Is there a way to watch the cable channels on my macbook? I don't have a tv, and it seems some adapter to get the channels on my computer would be cheaper than buying one.

What might be of interest if don't want to be limited to free TV:

I'm using this Terratec H7 myself including payTV Channels. It's capable of HDTV reception, but this requires the additional purchase of ElGato EyeTV 3 full version; the included EyeTV Lite is only capable of SDTV.

  • Can't watch videos in streeming on MacBook...

    Hi,
I don't know if somebody could help me out with this - I can't watch videos in streeming on my MacBook. I bought it recently, everything was working just fine at the begining. But since last week I can't watch any videos on any web site that has videos in streeming. I tried to reinstall DivX, but it didn't help. It's probably not a Safari problem cause I installed firefox and still can't see no video. I don't know what else to do... I can watch other videos I have on my computer. I checked software updates but the last ones are from july, and the two new ones are a security update (I don't know if his could be the problem) and iTunes.
If you have any tips I would be very grateful.

I've had problems with this before actually. Here's my post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1532701&tstart=0

    i have a Macbook pro 13"
    Mac OS X version 10.6.8

    Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
I tried to mount a DVD movie disc into my macbook but it automatically ejects without running.
My mac has Windows on bootcamp. The disc wouldn't run on windows as well.
Is there any problem with my mac? I rmb i could watch DVD on my mac.

    Hey lilnaix,
Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like you are experiencing issues with the SuperDrive on your MacBook Pro. The following resource provides some great troubleshooting information.
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/HT2801
While you should definitely give the entire article a read, I have highlighted a particular section that may resolve your issue:
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
    1. Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
    2. Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
    3. Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
    5. Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
    - OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
    - OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
    6. If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Can I watch a dvd on my macbook and watch it through apple TV?

I have a Sony Bravia EX621.  I am trying to use my MacBook Pro (10.6.8)  as a DVD player.  I have a wireless capable modem for my TV.  Can I play DVD's on my TV with this set-up?

It does, even with Airparrot - my assumption is that Apple block copies of the screen memory for things like iTunes/DVD player at a low level to prevent copying, or because Airplay can be potentially intercepted, converted and stored.

  • Watching cable on my imac

How can we legally watch cable on our Mac? Our subdivision includes free cable w/ our rent. However, we've never used it. We only have computers, & no tvs. We want to watch the olympics, & be able to see the commentaries, athlete highlights, etc, not just watch generic live streaming, which will be at inconvienent times. We would need the local channels. Our cable company says we can only watch cable via an actual tv monitor. Surely this isn't truly the case, is it?
It looks like MacTV pro is a scam.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

No sure wht you mean by the 2nd to last sentence but I suspect you are misguided.
At any rate look at www.Elgato.com

  • Watching cable TV

can you watch cable TV on a mac g4????

Yes provided you have a firewire port and running Mac OS X Tiger.
    You have around two choices,
A EyeTV 500 for a few limited "FreeHD" (non-DRMed) digital stations coming over your bare cable wire or rooftop antenna. (no HDCP DRM decryption or cable company descrambling, most of the "good stuff") If the cable box outputs a "clean" ClearQAM signal, then the EyeTV 500 will display it on your Mac.
A EyeTV 200 for analog cable stations (most popular currently, but slowly switching over to digital stations by 2008 sometime in U.S.)
Both are external devices, Firewire 400 and take coax cable inputs.
If you have a cable box with Firewire ports, you can hook up a 6 pin F 400 cable and by using special software, watch and record TV on the Mac.
I haven't tried it yet, but plan on doing so, here's something to get you started.
    http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2349&p=3
You can use a ATI Remote (programmable) to control the screen from afar which is better than Front Row by a mile.
It's a bit of a chore to learn all what's going on with it all, so you'll have some work cut out for you.

  • I bought an HDTV cable to connect my MacBook Pro to my Sony TV via HDMI so I could watch videos from my computer on my TV.  My TV then shows my basic computer background but the videos won't play.  What am I doing wrong?

I bought an HDTV cable to connect my MacBook Pro to my Sony TV via HDML.  The TV recognizes my computer; I see my basic computer screen on the TV. I tried to watch videos on my TV but got nothing. (tried via my facebook vidoes and Youtube.  What am I doing wrong?

I've got a similar (but different!) problem: I have a MacBookPro3,1 running Mac OS X 10.6.8. I want to connect to my HD TV using a HDMI to DVI cable but the MBP cannot detect the TV display. What's the solution? Is this a bug in Mac OS X 10.6.8 ? Any ideas what I can do to make things work with the HDMI to DVI cable. (N.B.: I have separate audio cable running from the MBP to amplified speakers for the sound side of things. It’s the video that’s the problem!)

  • What is the best solution to watch cable TV wirelessly on my MacBook Pro?

Hi all. I know this isn't a direct AppleTV question but I thought I may find a solution in this forum.
I just purchased a MacBook Pro and I want to watch cable TV wirelessly. I have an old Formac Studio TVR thats held up pretty well over the years which I have hooked up via FireWire to my PowerMac.
    I have...
    -Comcast Cable Box w/DVR
    -Formac TVR
    -Netgear WPN824 v2 Router (ethernet 10/100 only)
-MacBook Pro (core 2 duo 2.4ghz)
I'm open to purchasing new items but I want to hear what solution works best before doing so. I've seen some specs on Slingbox but I wonder if Apple has or is working on a solution.
    thanks in advance.

I have the $149 Slingbox Solo. It connects directly to my Digital Cable box/DVR. You can watch it on a wired or wireless connection. Quality varies according to the speed of the connection. On a local network, the quality is actually excellent. You control the box by an on-screen remote control. As note by others, you can watch remotely from anywhere with an internet connection. It works very well with my Mac as well as various laptops (MacBook pro and a Sony Viao). I also have an Elgato and a Miglia tuner - neither of which can do anything wirelessly. The Slingbox does take control of the cable box. Overall, I am very impressed with the Slingbox and would highly recommend it.

  • What programs can I watch with macbook tvtuners?

    Hi!
I am studing in UK (Oxford) and living in a college house where we have to share one tv in a common room among 20 students - which is fun but sometimes getting difficult.
So I thought I could buy one of those small USB tuners and connect it to my macbook to be able to watch for example BBC News in the morning.
    So my question is:
    1. Which tvtuners could you recommend?
    2. I have heard a lot about EyeTV Hybrid but what programs will I be able to watch with it - assuming that I don't have cable tv in my room and I will have to connect an antena (do I have to buy it seperatly - if yes then which one is the best)
    thanks

    Hi Wiktor
I'd reommend you look at the TV tuners from Elgato assuming you have a Mac.
You can basically watch any Freeview (Google it) terrestrial digital channels (or analogue ones if you get the EyeTV hybrid tuner) channels for nothing (your house (or even room) will need a TV licence though).
You will not be able to watch most pay per view digital terestrial channels like TopUpAnytime / TCM and probably other like Setanta Sports.
The EyeTv hybrid comes with a tiny aerial about 8" high - works reasonably well, but it will all be down to reception in your room/area how good this is. If it's poor you'll need a proper aerial feed or perhaps an extension co-axial cable to get a better position.
Yes you can watch BBC News and other BBC feeds.
Miglia also make Apple compatible TV tuner cards - they probably work well too, main difference is likely to be software.
BTW Elgato have just released EyeTV software version 3 so you may want to wait a bit or it'll cost to upgrade, though 2 works pretty well.
