  • How to install an SSD in a MacBook Pro and keep the original hard drive

Step by step instructions on how to install a Crucial SSD as the primary drive in a MacBook Pro and use the original hard drive as a second drive in place of the optical drive.
Apart from the time needed to back up your data and clone the original drive to the new SSD, you should be able complete this in less than an hour.

    Verifying
Install the SSD in the HDD slot
Install the HDD in the optical slot
Boot to the HDD and format the SSD
Boot using Command R and restore the operating system from Time machine to the SSD
Reformat the HDD and restore the data files to it.

  • Apple put a new hard drive into my MacBook Pro and updated the system to Maverick. They did not put iPhoto and iWeb on it but I did have it in Lion. Why and what am I supposed to do?

Apple put a new hard drive into my MacBook Pro and updated it from Lion to Maverick. They did not put iPhoto and iWeb on it but I did have it in Lion. They also didn't put Pages, Keynote or Numbers back on it until I argued with them. Of course, I didn't have my data backed up. My hard drive was destroyed when I tried to install the update of Mavericks myself. I should not have to buy iWeb and iPhoto when I already had them. Suggestions?

    cwhargrave,
have you tried looking in the App Store, to see if you can redownload iWeb and iPhoto there gratis?
If you haven’t done so already, you should purchase an external hard drive to act as a Time Machine backup destination, so that you’ll have an option to rollback to a working environment if a new OS installation is troublesome.

    5400rpm: GB
    7200rpm: GB
    Where can I purchase them.

    I think the current answers are;
    200 GB for 7200 RPM
    500 GB for 5400 RMP

  • Trying to upgrade to snow leopard and my macbook pro keeps ejecting the DVD-R

I downloaded snow leopard and am attempting to burn it to DVD-R, as per the instructions, but everytime i insert the DVD-R  (Maxell 4.7 GB) it spits it right back out.

Did you download Snow Leopard (ie, Mac OS X 10.6)?  If so, you have gotten it illegally, as it is not available for download legally.  You should delete whatever you downloaded, as it could possibly contain malware.
If, OTOH, you purchased and downloaded Lion (10.7) from the App Store, then it sounds like there's either something wrong with the disk you're trying to use or with your optical drive.  Try putting the installer on an 8 GB flash drive instead, I like that approach better anyway.  (BTW, what instructions are you following, in this case?)

  • How do I boot from an external hard drive if my MacBook Pro only recognizes the internal drive?

Hi there, I recently got the white screen of death (w/ circle slash) on my 13" 2009 MacBook Pro. Most people are saying that it is hard drive failure, so I am trying to boot it from an external hard drive to save some of my data before having it repaired. Unfortunately, every time I press "option" while it boots, it only shows the internal drive on the grey screen. I have my external drive connected, but it won't recognize it. What should I do?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can only start from an external drive if OS X is installed there. If not, it won't appear as a bootable volume because there isn't any operating system inside it.
As you have a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro, it's better to start from the Mac OS X disc that came with your Mac. Insert it and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. After starting, go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility, select "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and repair it. If you can't get it repaired, take the computer to an Apple Store.
If the hard drive can't be repaired, the only option to recover your files is to use an application as DiskWarrior, but it's expensive and it's not sure that it will work, because it may fail

  • How do I get my Macbook Pro to recognize the esata connected drive?

I have connected and the system seems to recognize the ExpressCard esata controller adapter card, but the system doesn't seem to see the drive.  I have restarted the system with no change.  The drive is formated for Mac.  Not sure what else I can do?

Again, I think you're on the right track, but before replacing it, give the following advice from AussieDJ a try (boot into 32 bit mode), whether it's the same card or not (there are definitely things "out there" that do not yet work on 64 bit systems):
The firmware I had previously would only work in 32-bit, but I now have the updated 64-bit compatible firmware. I would suggest the OP try booting into 32-bit mode to see if it works. (Hold the numbers 3 + 2 while booting)
Does the box come up top right when you plug the card in btw?

Get your PRAM battery replaced.  It may fix your optical drive in the process, if it is over 4 years old.

I'm assuming your dvd drive is broken? if you have a thumb drive large enough (8GB or better), you can use another computer to make a bootable image from the install dvd to the thumb drive. then you can install from the the thumb drive.

Not the MBP-R's, you can't even change the RAM or storage in them.
The other 15" MBP's you can and they include the Superdrive built in.
Last time you do a impulsive purchase huh?

  • Transferring data from 750GB backup drive to new MacBook Pro with 256 Gb PCI-e flash storage?

Yesterday my late-2008 aluminium unibody MacBook died - absolutely and definitively.  I've tried SMC reset multiple times to no avail.  However, it served me well for almost six years and it's now time to move on.  I've decided to buy a 13 inch MacBook Pro Retina with 256Gb PCI-e flash storage.  Obviously, it will come with Mavericks installed as the operating system.
When it died, my MacBook was running OS X 10.8.5, the original hard drive had been replaced with a Western Digital 750GB, 7200 rpm drive of which I believe about 350GB was used. I keep two x 1Tb Lacie Rugged backup drives, each of which has both Time Machine and SuperDuper Bootable Clone backups.
    My questions are these -
    1.     How should I proceed to transfer my data from my external backup drives to my new MacBook Pro Retina, given the difference in storage capacity of my existing backup drives and my new MacBook Pro?
    2.     I have over 32,000 photos in my iPhoto Library which, obviously, consume a big slab of disk space.  I'm not sure how I go about 'quarantining' the iPhoto Library so that it doesn't use all the flash drive storage.
    3.      One of the Lacie Rugged's has a 'triple interface' - i.e. USB 2, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800.  The other has a USB 2 and 2 x Firewire 800 (IIRC).    The MacBook Pro Retina has two USB 3 ports and two Thunderbolt 2 ports. I want to continue to use the Lacies as my backup drives.  Am I better off to use the USB  ports or should I invest in a Thunderbolt to USB cable?  Does it make any real difference in terms of backing up (which, in my case, doesn't have to be all that speedy).
    4.     What else should I be thinking about? I know I'm bound to have overlooked the most obvious problems but can't think what they may be ...
    Cheers
    Tricia

USB3 is backwards compatible with USB2, so you can use the old USB cables.  For faster data transfer rates, Firewire 800 would be available using this adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
Firewire 800 is about twice as fast as USB2, theoretically.
    Ciao.

How do I save and import my bookmarks from another hard drive? When I try to open the installed Firefox on the old drive, it (obviously) opens a browser from the new main drive, free of bookmarks. Is there a way I can save the bookmarks on the old drive without opening a browser?
The guts of my computer were rearranged and I got a new main hard drive. My old one is still in there and I can get stuff from it, but when I go to the Mozilla folder on the old one, I can't figure out if there's anything I can do to get all my bookmarks from that drive to my new one, where Firefox is newly installed.

If you open Firefox then Firefox will always use the default profile folder as found via profiles.ini on your system drive.
You either need to import the file in your current default profile or copy the file to your current profile folder while Firefox is closed.
Firefox 3 stores the bookmarks and the browser history in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/places.sqlite places.sqlite] and no longer creates an HTML backup by default.
There are also (five) JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder within the Firefox profile folder.
You can either copy the file places.sqlite to your [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] or import the most recent JSON backup from the bookmarkbackups folder of that old profile.
    See:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
"Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders".
You may want to un-check the box "Hide extensions for known file types" to see the file extensions of all files.

  • Hi. I've changed my hard drive on my macbook pro and wanted to reinstall logic pro but although I took the serial number from the "about" box it rejects it when I try to reinstall. It was an upgrade to Logic 8 originally. What can I do? Urgent!

Hello. I have installed a new hard drive on my Macbook Pro with OSX Tiger. I tried to reinstall Logic 8 Pro but it refuses the serial number when I try to install it. I took the serial number from the "About" box when Logic was still installed but no good. The software was originally an upgrade, and I don't think I have the disks for the previous version. What do I do? This is important because I only use the computer for music. Thank you.

There's actually an even simpler solution that doesn't include buying a new version of Logic.  He can use his original version easily.  Of course, that depends if the OP knows how to effectively use his computer though...
