AirPlay video support is specific to each apps. In other word, it's possible that one apps gives you the possibility to AirPlay video while another one will not.
I don't use SkyGo but pay attention to the AirPlay logo beside AppleTV; is it a small speaker or the video icon (square with a triangle in it)? If the AppleTV is followed by an small speaker it means your app only support audio AirPlay.
Sometimes, you can try to mirror your display as a turn around but some apps even prevent that.

No, AppleTV doesn't support cabled inputs (other than ethernet, I beleive).
Assuming SkyGo supports it, and you have the iPad and AppleTV on the same network, you can use Airply to mirror the iPad to the TV.(http://www.apple.com/support/appletv/airplay/). However, many streaming video apps do not support Airplay (by vendor design). -

HELP???Not all apps are enabled for airplay, this is the developers responsibility. As far as mirroring, developers have to specifically block the app and some have chosen to do so. It can be for licensing reasons.

Skygo enables you to watch Sky on your iPad. There's a strong implication the you can already watch Sky on your TV. Why go through the iPad (and your broadband account)?

There's a vlc streamer app in the app store, but you would need to also install the streamer helper on the device where the movies reside. This works between my macbook and my ipad, but if you cannot access the external drive and install the helper file, then probably not -
