Can ichat act as a softphone?

I'm thinking of adding a VoIP service to my small business.
Can ichat be setup to be a VoIP softphone?
I looked at Skype and GIZmo project but they dont offer an inbound calling number for my area code .. Ottawa Canada.
I found a VoIP provider that will but I'm told that I need to use an internet Adapter so that an ordinary phone can be used. The adapter is expensive and apprentlently needs to be pre-configured by the Voip provider. I'm also told that I can use a free softphone " idefisk" but that call quality is not very good.
Any info on this subject would be appreciated.

I'm very new to OpsCentre. Can it act as a sort of configuration managment tool, eg keeping ssh keys (or other host-particular config files) of a server, so in case the server is (or has to be - Disaster Recovery) be rebuilt, the old ssh keys can be restored on it by OpsCentre as is it is re-built (re-provisioned, I guess is how they call it).

Enterprise Manager (EM) Ops Center (OC) is not a Configuration Management(CM) tool. Ops Center is a "end-to-end" infrastructural System Management tool (not restore a previous configuration). It's covered all task of management infrastructure (Oracle) stack. Read a welcome message of EM OC Doc Library.
IHMO: A good Configuration Management and Change Management tool is CFengine 3 or Puppet.

You need to satisfy several things along the way
Account type
You need to have a Jabber or Google mail Account your self.
If you have a Google Mail Account then it needs the "Talk" option Enabled in your Google account Settings ( A Facebook with "Chat" enabled is also a valid Jabber ID to use in iChat).
Connection Method
This is about which apps can connect to which apps for Video ro Audio to work.
iChat Video when using a Jabber account is iChat to iChat Only.
iChat connects using a process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
Jabber based Apps if they have an A/V module connect using protocol called Jingle.
Needless to say Google do their own version of this that is written in to the web Browser Plugin that allows Video Chats (there are PC and Mac versions), and in the PC app called GoogleTalk.
However it is also not that compatible with other Jabber apps.

This claims, now, that Google had a hand in writing the Protocol.
Also in the "Clients Supporting Jingle" list many more version of Google products are mentioned with extended info. (it suggests that someone at Google has been editing the page).

The specific answer to this to be clear is NO.
We are talking about different Apps (or web Browser Plugins) using different Internet Protocols that are not compatible.
The simplest thing is to get the Web Browser Plugin (However there can be issues with the Flash Plugin)
At one time Google used Flash to do Video Chats and it would seem their Plugin is very close to this part of Flash.
See the Known Issues and the "Google Talk Plugin Disables iSight On Mac" item.
Options
Use a Web Browser yourself with the Plugin.
Use a Flash Base Site such as MeBeam (Flash has to be enabled in your Browser and the instructions are simple on the page)
Try to find a Jingle capable Mac Jabber Client (app) ( I have not found one).

Error -8. Can iChat w/computer in house but not across the net

Hello and thanks in advance for any help.
I can initiate and carry on a Video Chat with another Mac in our house, but get communication error 8 almost every time I try to Video Chat to anyone across the Internet.
Here is my setup:
Time Warner (Road Runner). Most recent speed test was 6600kb down and 478kb upstream.
Toshiba PCX1000 Cable Modem (probably 8 years old)
Apple Airport Extreme (802.11n) router (1 month old)
Apple MacBook Pro (less than 1 month old)
I do not have the Firewall turned on on the Mac.
Have tried changing port to 443. Have changed all Quicktime and iChat settings to recommended changes in this forum.

Can iChat be launched by a web page? What is the code to do so?

I want to add code to my iWeb web site that when clicked, will launch the users iChat AV application with a chat window to my iChat user name.
Can this be done?

It will Launch AIM on a PC if it is installed.
If a Mac has AIM and iChat it will launch AIM first unless with Internet Explorer you change the App that launches with the AIM:goim HTML reference.

Can iChat on Mac talk to iOS FaceTime devices

I have Facetime on my iOS devices, as indeed many of my family and friends.
I also have installed FaceTime app on the iMac and I dont really like it. It does seem to fit in well with the Aspect ratio of the Mac Display. The contacts are in a black border etc. So I tend to use my iOS devices in FaceTime but feel that the mobile lack the control of the video. I have not 'upgraded' my sofwate to Mountain Lion which seems very based on mobile devices and iOS 6
As an old user of iChat in many versions I have client Buddy Lists which offered availability markers etc, even which in other Mac software applications for example Address Book.
Is it possible for a Mac based iChat to talk to iOS devices ?
Are there any advantages/disadvantages to me the user and/or my recipients.
Would upgrading to Mountain Lion provide a better FaceTime vs iChat experience.
I realise this is a highly subjective question but would welcome any views

No.
Well,... not iChat to FaceTime or Messages on the iOS device.
You could use AIM Express or a Jabber client app and at least Text chat.
FaceTime.
The Lion version has the same Video controls to set the pic Landscape or Portrait as the Mountain LIon version does. See Video Menu - you tend to have to be connected in a chat for it to go Dark)
FaceTime can chat (in Video only) to other Mac users using FaceTime or to iOS devices.
It cannot Video to Messages app (In iOS or the Mac Version)
Messages on the Mac in Mountain Lion
This adds the iMessaging ability to what is essentially the iChat app.
It uses the same iChat "Engine" if you like and adds in the iOS iMessages account to the other AIM and Jabber or Yahoo IDs and Names you may be using already.
If using the iMessages Account to connect to Contacts then Messages will Invoke (Start up) FaceTime for you if you want to Video chat.
The former "iChat Names" still use Buddy Lists and can Video within Messages like iChat can.
So...
Like iChat you cannot Video or Text chat from AIM to Jabber (Cross Service) you cannot chat from your iMessage account to AIM or Jabber (or Yahoo)
The iMessage account allows you to text chat to those people you might be FaceTiming to at the moment.

I've been looking for a way to get into the community forums with iChat AV... Does anyone know if that can be done?

Can WLS act as a standa-alone webserver

Newbie question here.

Could it serve up just a static html page, or does it only serve web applications?

You can always use cProject system as a stand alone. In this case you can't carry out accounting ( No FICO Integrated), You need to create business partner in cProject (No HR integration), You can manage document in cProjects and no SAP DMS integration.
By using cProject system stand alone you can do only Project planning and execution.

I can iChat to everyone except my other computers!

I use iChat both from work and home on two different Macs with no problems EXCEPT if I try to talk (audio or video) from home to work or the reverse.
I have gone thru some previous advice and opened up the NAT router at home, and all the necessary ports are open both at home and at work. There are no problems with audio or video to any other regular contact.
Both computers have Tiger installed (10.4.5) although I should mention that the original Tiger (10.1??) was installed from the same "site licence" disc from work (both are "work" machines). Could this conceivably be the problem?
Ideas please? I can talk across the world but not across town to my own family!

(You didn't actually ask that)
Both you and your parent need to be on the same Messaging service (it comes down to using AIM or Jabber).
Lets presume you are using an Apple ID in Messages that is from an iCloud registration (@me.com or @icloud.com ending name).
You would need to enter this name (Again) As it is a Valid AIM Name in the Preferences as an AIM Account (Press the + button then chose AIM in the drop down)
If they are using AIM already then just add each other to each others Buddy lists.
If you both happen to have Gmail Accounts then your could Enable "Talk" on your Google Settings then add your proper Gmail ID and chose GoogleTalk in the Accounts > + button > Add account pane
You have to enter your Google ID as it appears on the Web Mail Page (The Apple Mail app will accept @gmail.com or @googlemail.com and fetch your mail but iChat and Messages needs it to be just so).
If you both have Facebook accounts then Enable "Chat" on your Facebook Setting and Add this as a Jabber ID
NOTES.
Certain Apple IDs are valid Screen Names (@mac.com @me.com and @iCloud.com) but some of these if registered via iCloud will not work in iChat version earlier than iChat 6.
This is due to the way iChat 6 and Messages logs in to me.com as well as a security check on looking at the password.

My friends and i ALL HAVE THE SAME EXACT MAC and they can ichat but i cant!

Ok, here's the deal. So, my two best friends and i all bought the same macbook for college and we're all in separate states and they both use ichat to talk to eachother but everytime i try to connect with one of them it says that there has been an error. i cant use the phone capability either...alli can do is type. and when i ask for a summary...this is what it says below... CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?! IM SO FRUSTRATED!

Hi,
The Quicktime Streaming settings run from Automatic at the physical Top of the list to Intranet/LAN and the physical bottom.
Both these extremes are read by iChat are incompatible numbers for use.
Each setting in the Quicktime streaming is given a number.
Automatic returns a 0 to iChat. The Intranet/LAN does a similar thing.
If your internet Download speeds exceeds 1.5Mbps you should use the 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN setting that is the one from bottom.
Skype uses completely different ports and if it finds those blocked it will drop to using port 80 like web browsing does.
It is not a comparison as to whether iChat will work.

Can Ichat audio be recorded?

I'd like to record Ichat conversations and post them as podcasts on my website. Is this possible?

Yes that is possible,
You can start an audio chat with the contact you're going to interview and select:
video from the ichat top menu>select record chat
If you have an audio chat running, this audio chat will be recorded
If you have a video chat running, the video chat will be recorded
The contact you want to interview will see a pop up window that warns the chat session will be recorded if he accepts and agrees that you're recording the chat. A red recording light will appear in the iChat window.
The recorded chat will be saved in iTunes after you stop recording.
If you have iLife's GarageBand you can really have some fun by changing the voice / adding sound effects / leaders and really tweak it into a radio show.
Just open GarageBand, select "new podcast" and drag the recorded iChat file to the the main GarageBand's window.
Upload the Radio podcast to the web by selecting "sharing" from GarageBand's top menu and select:
Upload podcast to iWeb.

Can ichat viedo with with aim buddy

when my buddy on my list send me a web cam request, after I accepted it, it gave me the error message. why is that? he is using pc aim, and I am mac, is that the problem?
can someone trouble shoot for me, please......

Have you done the following?
iChat>Preferences>Video>Bandwidth limit: None
System Preferences>Quicktime>Streaming>streaming speed: 1.5Mpbs T1/Intranet/LAN
Restart iChat
Which version of AIM? AIM website says 6.5 doesn't video chat with iChat. However, some people report success. Maybe going back to 5.9 a good idea.
Has PC end done this?
