Can iChat on Mac talk to iOS  FaceTime devices

I have Facetime on my iOS devices, as indeed many of my family and friends.
I also have installed FaceTime app on the iMac and I dont really like it.  It does seem to fit in well with the Aspect ratio of the Mac Display.  The contacts are in a black border etc. So I tend to use my iOS devices in FaceTime but feel that the mobile lack the control of the video.  I have not 'upgraded' my sofwate to Mountain Lion which seems very based on mobile devices and  iOS 6
As an old user of iChat in many versions I have client Buddy Lists which offered availability markers etc, even which in other Mac software applications for example Address Book.
Is it possible for a Mac based iChat to talk to iOS devices ?
Are there any advantages/disadvantages to me the user and/or my recipients.
Would upgrading to Mountain Lion provide a better FaceTime vs iChat experience.
I realise this is a highly subjective question but would welcome any views

Hi,
Is it possible for a Mac based iChat to talk to iOS devices ?
No.
Well,...  not iChat to FaceTime or Messages on the iOS device.
You could use AIM Express or a Jabber client app and at least Text chat.
FaceTime.
The Lion version has the same Video controls to set the pic Landscape or Portrait as the Mountain LIon version does.  See Video Menu - you tend to have to be connected in a chat for it to go Dark)
FaceTime can chat (in Video only) to other Mac users using FaceTime or to iOS devices.
It cannot Video to Messages app (In iOS or the Mac Version)
Messages on the Mac in Mountain Lion
This adds the iMessaging ability to what is essentially the iChat app.
It uses the same iChat "Engine" if you like  and adds in the iOS iMessages account to the other AIM and Jabber or Yahoo IDs and Names you may be using already.
If using the iMessages Account to connect to Contacts then Messages will Invoke (Start up) FaceTime for you if you want to Video chat.
The former "iChat Names" still use Buddy Lists and can Video within Messages like iChat can.
So...
Like iChat you cannot Video or Text chat from AIM to Jabber  (Cross Service) you cannot chat from your iMessage account to AIM or Jabber (or Yahoo)
The iMessage account allows you to text chat to those people you might be FaceTiming to at the moment.

    While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use FaceTime. There's a FaceTime Support Community where everybody uses FaceTime. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_app_store/facetime_for_mac

  • Why can't we do the things that you can do on Mac iMovie on iOS iMovie

    I have an iPad 2 with iMovie installed onto it. I just want to know, why can't we do the things that you can do on the Mac version of iMovie on the iOS version? In the 2013/2014 Mac iMovie udate, they added templates from iOS onto Mac so why can't we get things like maps and globes, new texts, greenscreen and duplication (cloning)?

    Same reason you cannot surf the internet without a web browser.
    iTunes is the interface for the iTunes store just a Internet Explorer (or whatever) is the interface for the web.

  • HT3819 is it posable to Home Share iTunes U content from my Mac osX with IOS 6 device.

    I have a Mac running (OS X) and an iPad 3 and iPhone 4  both running (IOS 6) and the latest version of iTunes U App.  Before my upgrade to ios 6, I was able to Home Share my iTunes U library to both of my IOS devices, now I can not.
    I am aware the iTunes U content was moved from the video app to the iTunes U App with the IOS 6 upgrade.  I have tried every thing that I could find via Apple support and Google search to answer my issue. Everything I have seen is veg concerning iTunes U and home sharing.
    I am able to Home Share all of my videos via the Videos App, Music in the Music App but no iTunes U and No Podcast that I have in my iTunes library will Home Share to my IOS devices.
    Also I do have an Apple TV and I have no problem sharing all the content with it.
    Do you have any suggestions

    Agreed. What's the deal, Apple? Why no ability to access iTunes U on iOS 6 via Home Sharing? Please fix this!

  • Can i access preview on my iOS 8 device?

    If I save a document to "preview" on my iCloud drive folder on my mac, how can i access that on my iPhone iOS 8?

    Preview is an application for Mac OS, but I have not found it on iPhone/iOS.  If it exists, I'm not aware.  The thing that you're wanting to do however, if I'm correct in understanding, is to save the document (perhaps through the Preview app on Mac) and then open it on your iPhone easily within some app.
    I am happy to say that I found a way to do this, and it helps me personally, so I thank you for asking about it so that I can benefit from the research I did to find the answer.
    It seems that by default apps only have access to their portion of the iCloud - files for which they made or put there.  Within that app however, it is easily possible to open it in other apps.  This is not useful to the degree that we are after, so I searched around.  I found an app which somehow allows access to the entire iCloud drive, which is amazing.  I'm not really sure how it managed to do so, unless maybe it is logging into the iCloud drive web account in the background (yet, I'm not sure how, since I never gave it any login or permissions).  Either way, regardless of how - it just works, and it actually works great.  I would like it if somebody could dig into this and tell me whether there is a potential security concern or hole here by using this app.  I'm thinking Apple wouldn't have approved the app if it wasn't legit though.
    The app is called Cloud Opener.  Let me give you a quick primer on using it though.  I read some reviews and found that people thought that it was making them wait a long time to start up the app, but it turns out that it comes up fast (shows the big cloud button/logo), and you're supposed to tap on that and it opens right up into your iCloud drive.  From there you have access to all of the features iOS offers for sharing or attaching or opening etc.  I was able to store txt files and PDF files in my Preview and TextEdit folders within iCloud, and they all worked flawlessly in iBooks and GoodReader, etc.
    Enjoy

  • HT201104 Can you sync contacts/calendar on ios 7 device after upgrading to iCloud drive?

    I have an iphone 4 (ios 7, can't get 8).  I don't care about accessing documents on iCloud drive with my phone.
    I might want to do it with my ipad mini (ios8.1) though.
    If I upgrade to iCloud drive will I still be able to sync contacts/calendar on my iphone?

    I cloud drive IS not the SAME as I cloud you use for backups.  I cloud drive is for moving docs, pics, etc.  So if you upgrade to iCloud drive, yes you can still sync contacts, calendars, etc

    You're posting in the Mac Pro desktop forum. If that's what you have, the answer is no for Thunderbolt but yes for USB 3.0. Check out these PCIe cards for USB 3.0.

  • Strange view with iOS 8 devices

    Hi there,
    with our iOS 8 devices the SharePoint 2010 delivers a stange view. The content stays the same, but the horizontal and vertical navigation look strange. Some items in the horizontal navigation cannot be clicked.
    Look at this screenshot. On the top you can see the broken view with iOS 8 devices. Below is the normal view. How can I achieve the normal view for all devices? I tried disabling all mobile views, but iOS 8 devices still get this strange view.

    I know that this thread already has an "answer" posted, but we have this issue on our public facing website, so it was difficult to be able to tell people they need run in desktop mode and so the hunt continued. In this stackoverflow thread, they
    talk about what the actual problem is (long story short is this new version of iOS 8 has safari version of 600, which is being captured and misinterpreted in the mozilla.browser file as version 60 instead of 600 - full description here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25978746/ios-8-safari-8-not-working-with-asp-net-ajax-extensions).
    So what this means is you have to either make the correct fix in the mozilla.browser file (which isn't recommended by Microsoft) or you go in and extend the Safari60 id (which is the one that grabs the iOS 8 browser) in the compat.browser file. When taking
    this approach, since you don't seem to be able to have multiple parentIds in a browser element, is you will need to inherit the Safari60 element the way that it describes in the stackoverflow article by doing something like this:
        <browser id="Safari6xx_bugfix" parentID="Safari60">
            <identification>
              <capability name="appleWebTechnologyVersion" match="6\d\d" />
            </identification>
            <capture>
            </capture>
            <capabilities>
              <capability name="ecmascriptversion"       value="1.4" />
              <capability name="w3cdomversion"           value="1.0" />
              <capability name="supportsCallback"        value="true" />
            </capabilities>
        </browser>
    you then also need to find all the ids in this file that match Safari2, AppleSafari, iPhoneSafari, iPodSafari and duplicate all those entries so that you can inherit from the Safari6xx_bugfix element we created here.
    An example of what we did to solve this is included below (yes, we did not want the iPod or iPhone to be recognized as mobile devices, so that element was changed from the original value of true, but other than that, these elements are exact duplicates of
    the originals - where the original just has an id minus the "_6xx_bugfix")
        <browser id="Safari2_6xx_bugfix" parentID="Safari6xx_bugfix">
            <controlAdapters>
                <adapter controlType="System.Web.UI.WebControls.Menu"
                         adapterType="" />
            </controlAdapters>
        </browser>
        <browser id="AppleSafari_6xx_bugfix" parentID="Safari2_6xx_bugfix">
            <identification>
                <userAgent match="Mac OS" />
            </identification>
        </browser>
        <browser id="iPhoneSafari_6xx_bugfix" parentID="AppleSafari_6xx_bugfix">
            <identification>
                <userAgent match="iPhone" />
                <userAgent match="Mobile" />
            </identification>

                <capability name="isMobileDevice"                    value="false" />
                <capability name="canInitiateVoiceCall"              value="true" />
                <capability name="optimumPageWeight"                 value="1500" />
                <capability name="requiresViewportMetaTag"           value="true" />
                <capability name="supportsTouchScreen"               value="true" />
                <capability name="telephoneNumberDetectionDisabled"  value="true" />
            </capabilities>
        </browser>
        <browser id="iPodSafari_6xx_bugfix" parentID="AppleSafari_6xx_bugfix">
            <identification>
                <userAgent match="iPod" />
                <userAgent match="Mobile" />
            </identification>
            <capabilities>
                <capability name="isMobileDevice"                    value="false" />
                <capability name="canInitiateVoiceCall"              value="true" />
                <capability name="optimumPageWeight"                 value="1500" />
                <capability name="requiresViewportMetaTag"           value="true" />
                <capability name="supportsTouchScreen"               value="true" />
            </capabilities>
        </browser>
    Hope this helps anyone else who is having this problem and hopefully in the future it won't be needed because MS will fix the original mozilla.browser file to not mistake a version of 600 as 60.

    Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then  "About This Mac".  Write down what it says about "version"and report that here.  Now continue to "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
    If you have a PPC Mac you cannot sync your idevice without a newer computer.  See the end of this post for options.
    If it says you have an Intel Mac you can upgrade to Snow Leopard, but check system requirements first:
    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
    You can buy Snow Leopard at:
    Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    After installing run the updater to 10.6.8, then upgrade iTunes.
    Jan. 2014 post by Kappy on doing all this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24599931
    Options if you cannot upgrade:  iTunes Store purchases can already be downloaded directly. Use iTunes Match to put non-Store music in iCloud, then download to your device from there.  Backup your device directly to  iCloud over a wireless connection.  Photos can be downloaded from the Camera Roll using iPhoto or Image Capture.

    All my mail have disappeared from my mac and my iOS devices. Seemingly from the iCloud server as well. How can I recover them?

    Well, you can't since the emails are stored on icloud's mail server.  Try this test, using a computer's browser, log into icloud.com and check the mail page.  If they are gone, then they are really gone.
    Now, I thought I could go into a Time Machine backup and view old emails from a day ago.  Unfortunately, Time Machine doesn't seem to save icloud based email, since regardless of the past date I go to, only the current emails show up, not older ones.  My conclusion is that I wouldn 't be able to recover them from a TM backup.
    What had you been doing on the mac or device that causes emails to be deleted?  (I hope you don't have a family member or friend using the same icloud account - they may have deleted all emails by mistake.)

  • Can't login to iCloud messages and FaceTime

    i can't login to iCloud imessages and FaceTime.

    This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
    Step 1
    Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait for it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
    Sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your Apple devices. Log out and log back in. Try again to sign in.
    Step 3
    Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 4
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ About This Mac
    Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
    Step 5
    Take the steps suggested in this support article. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
    Step 6
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
    If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If the box marked SOCKS Proxy is checked, uncheck it. You don’t need to change any other settings in the window. Click OK and then Apply. Test.
    The result may be that you can't connect to the Internet at all. Revert the change if that happens, or if iMessage still doesn't work. Remember that you must Apply any changes you make in the preference pane before they take effect.
    Step 7
    Select from the menu bar
               ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
              Block all sites from storing information on this computer
    Close the preference pane.
    Step 8
    Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name. Log out and log back in.
    Step 9
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
    Step 10
    Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound outputand Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. After testing, restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
    If iMessage worked in safe mode, but still doesn't work when you restart in "normal" mode, stop here and post your results.
    Step 11
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.apsd.plist
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 12
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Step 13
    Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
    Step 14
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 15
    If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support. When you set up a support call, select "Apple ID" as the product you need help with, not the hardware model. That way, if you're not under AppleCare, you may be able to talk your way out of being charged for the call.

  • HT3529 On ipad3, wifi only, how can I send messages to non iOS users?

    On ipad3, wifi only, how can I send messages to non iOS users?
    I have MacBook, and iPhone 4 as well

    Your're wrong on the overly sensitive part. I couldn't care less about android or some other stuff that you are comparing, what i do care about... enough to take the time to explain, is that your view on things colors the choices you make.
    You clearly state your decision making process and the marketing is doing their work on you.
    You think in terms of comparisons and competitors and that will always get you. The truth is, I'm glad Apple finally focused on how "something makes you feel" with iOS 7. There is so much truth in that one sentence!
    There is so much noise out there about screen size, n core processors and price comparisons you can never get a good feel of what the product really is. By the time you figure out you were taken on a marketing hike, a new model comes out and the story starts all over again. (think of the nokia 40 megapixel camera, or the quad core samsung, those are exagerations to impress the consumer) Imagine the size of the jpg's on that phone, all those megapixels with the quality of a phone camera, ridiculous. Soon we will have 12-core phones with 7 inch screens, and people being led into thinking you can do everything on it, "one thing to rule them all", buy now! I saw a woman on the metro the other day with a 6' phone, I swear the thing was almost half the size of her head.
    It's almost 2014 and you are complaining you can't send sms(which is a 25 year old technology by the way) with this new device. All your friends are using outdated tech and because you want to talk to them you want outdated tech too. Sms is insecure, easily snooped upon and recorded, the carrier charges for it and charges more for international sms, and so on... and on... internet chat has been free since the 1990s and it's about time it got free on our phones too.
    Just forget about it. Enjoy other people taking the decisions, you can't take yourself, for you. Trust them, see if it fits, care about life, act emotionally when you "feel" like it. You deserve that, you are human, take the feeling home with you, share it with others.
    Who cares if it's the 2014 edition or quad core... I gave my old iPad 3 to my grandmother so I could call her on Facetime. I bought the iPad Air on a whim, I just "felt" I wanted it. After a couple of weeks she thought about asking me if she could call my brother in the UK too, and how much it would cost. I said it was free, and she looked at me in disbelief. She is now calling my brother weekly by herself... she is 78. Can you imagine that... all I did is give her my "old" iPad.
    Buying the iPad Air was the single best decision of my life, not because of the size or the weight or even iOS 7 (i do enjoy them by the way) but because it made me give my old iPad to my grandmother.
    She doesn't even understand how it works, I figured it would be too much useless stuff to mention... it just does! Here put your finger here and here, then tap the name... wait for him to answer. Unbelievable!!!
    PS. I figured the best gift I can make is give my old Apple devices to people who would never in a million years buy one for themselves. You see them in shops, they are our mothers and friends... they look at the huge prices and they would never give that much to themselves, they feel they don't deserve it. They gave me money to buy all the useless cr@p I ever wanted in my youth, the least I could do is gift them my "old tech" to enrich their lives. Going to buy a 5S soon and give my 4S to someone for free, but it's going to be someone I care deeply about, deeply enough to change their lives.
