Can iCloud be used like a carbonite backup?

I'm new to Mac. Bought an iMac and am wondering if iCloud should be or can be used like an offsite backup like Carbonite?

iCloud can be used to back up iOS devices for purposes of performing a complete restore, however iCloud is primarily a sync service and shouldn't be used to back up your mac.

No. iCloud is not a backup and Photo Stream has 1000 photos and 1 month limitation.
You can use Dropbox app for that.

If you have joined iCloud on your iPad, this will be the situation on your Snow Leopard Mac:
You will be able to access email, calendar and contacts on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email. A pictorial instruction page on doing this is here.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point. BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is)

If you are using "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option from OS X Recovery, you can only choose from the broad categories presented.

To be clear, if you are asking if you can use the volume containing your Time Machine backup to store additional, non-Time Machine files, the short answer is yes.
It's not a good idea though, since the Time Machine backup will eventually fill all available space, after which it begins to remove old, "expired" backups to make room for newer ones. The presence of additional files doesn't change that fact, and Time Machine will not erase them, but you will encounter a dilemma should you want to store additional files on that volume when there is no remaining space. You will have to make room for them on your own, by deleting existing files. Furthermore, since Time Machine cannot back up its own volume, those additional files will not be backed up by Time Machine.
The easy solution for what you describe is to purchase additional external storage. External USB hard disk drives have become very inexpensive; about $55 will buy a perfectly suitable 1 TB drive.
You can also choose to replace your MacBook Air's internal storage with a larger capacity one. Look for a suitable replacement from OWC / MacSales:

That gets a little more expensive but it is the optimum solution.

As Peter described, normally you wouldn't use BGP in place of an IGP like EIGRP or OSPF.
However, if you're a masochist, you could.
For example, if all your routers were connected by p2p links, you could configure each router in its own AS and run them as eBGP peers.
What Peter was alluding to, normally interior BGP peers run as iBGP peers, but then each requires a connection to every other peer (full mesh). (There's also BGP route reflectors or BGP confederations, which limit the need for interior iBGP peering to all other iBGP routers, but neither deals with how the iBGP routers "know" how to route to their required peers.) Normally an IGP protocol is used to provide reachability, but you could do the same with static routes. Of course, whether you have an IGP or use static routes that maps out the whole interior topology they both beg the question of why also then have iBGP too (if being used just for the interior topology).
There's a limit to the number of AS numbers, especially if using just the private range, so you could combine the two approaches, such as having small clusters of iBGP peers (maybe 2 or 3) which eBGP peer to other clusters.
If you did go to all the trouble, you would then find that BGP will likley converge slower than most IGPs and unless you do some manual policy configuration, BGP won't path select much better than RIP.
What BGP does well is handle massive route tables (like the Internet) and allow very sophiscated (manual) routing policies. However, both are usually not as desirable for an IGP.

hey thanks for your help, so now the phone is asking to be reconfigured , i am not picking up my wifi on the phone so im using the itunes on the laptop but having tried a couple times the only message i see it: Sorry we are unable to contiune with your activation at this time" on the itunes page. I'm in haiti but i dont c that as an option when selecting country or region on the phone so i have selected Jamaica as that is where i am from although the phone was a gift and im not sure where it was bought as the person died. Could this be a reason y i see the message on itunes?????

Using iCloud for transferring files from a Mac to an iOS device such as your iPad is dependent on the application your are using on the iPad. Apple applications such as Pages and Numbers, for instance, can use iCloud Drive. Some apps made by third parties also support the use of iCloud Drive. To find out if the applications you want to use support it, contact the maker of that application.

Can Automator be used to generate iCal backups?

I would like to use Automator to run iCal's backup utility - namely File > Back up iCal....
Has anyone done this? It seems like this should be fairly straightforward but I'm not seeing how this can be done from within Automator. TIA!

Couldn't figure out how to do in Automator but I took a crack at writing an Applescript that works.
This saves the iCal backup in your home folder and overwrites the previous copy. You'll need to create the first one yourself and then the script will work.
Here is the script:
