Can iCloud documents stay in sync in the background on iOS devices?

Hi everyone.
I've been using iCloud document syncing for a few years and now I feel a little bit puzzled.
My DayOne app on iPhone & iPad only start downloading entries after I launch the app. Is it true that I have to open the app for iCloud documents to start syncing? Or is it supposed to sync in the background (periodically or pushed) and that I just do not get it work?
The same goes for my Readdle Documents app. Everything starts syncing when the app is open and active. Is that the way iCloud document should work?
(I am running iOS 7.1 on iPhone 5 & iPad 3, OS X 10.9.2 on MBA 2013; iCloud documents set to ACTIVE on all devices; background apps are all turned ON for both iPhone & iPad.)
Thanks.

Many thanks to @randers4
Just can't believe Apple do not sync docs in the background (still do not after 3 years)

  • Can you get iTunes to sync in the background?

First, I'm on a PC, not a Mac...
What I mean by my question is, that I'd like iTunes to sync every time I attach the iPhone, but I don't necessarily want the iTunes application to maximize and come to the front upon plugging the phone back in. For that matter, I don't need it to be taking up space on my taskbar.
While I'm at work, I'm using the USB cord to charge the phone and sync my calendar (which my place goes wild with), but when I receive a phone call, I need to unplug the phone and leave the room (coverage issues), so when I get back to my seat and plug it in, I have to minimize iTunes (and see it on my taskbar).
Is there an add-in or third-party app, or some sort of script that allows you to a) configure iTunes to sync, but only in the background and b) hide the task button or put it in the system tray?

I just want to know if I can. I'm not asking whether I have a good reason to. I probably don't. hehe :o)
But to explain WHY I want to, here you go:
I've got a personal secretary and 4 assistants. They do all my calendar entries and set up all my appointments. They do this via shared calendaring in Outlook. I also enter some of my own appointment info, but mostly they do. The point is, half the time I don't even know what they're putting on my calendar unless I check it.
When I receive phone calls, I like to unplug it so the cord isn't dangling from my ear. I thought "wouldn't it be great since I do this anyway, that EVERY time I plug it back in, it syncs and I don't have to see iTunes." At work, I have no use for iTunes except to configure the iPhone. This way, if I forget to sync as I'm leaving, I'll at least gotten most if not all of my appointments.
The point is a little moot and my question is just "a nice to have" because -- since I'm the boss :o) -- I ordered the IT dept. to open up the Exchange server for IMAP, so I get my calendar entries synced no matter what. It's just that I like the iPhone's calendar interface SO much and looking at my calendar entries in an IMAP folder ain't a lot of fun.
Also, I'm guessing ActiveSync WILL be licensed, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask anyway. Thanks.

  • My ipad is syncing notes to an old phone with a different apple id how can I change it to sync to the new iphone icloud is off and so is home sharing

Apps and Music are not from iCloud. Are from iTunes and App Store.
You can change this from: Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Sign out and sign in with new ID, but you will have to pay again to download apps that you already have in your old account. Or leave it as it is to share purchases with your son.

  • TS4009 I deleted a large number of contacts on one iphone when i got a new one. icloud must have automatically synced to the old one, then synced my new one to that, thus deleting many contacts. can i restore them?

I deleted a large number of contacts on one iphone when i got a new one. icloud must have automatically synced to the old one, then synced my new one to that, thus deleting many contacts. can i restore them? can i retrieve a snapshot of my icloud as it existed yesterday?

When a device that is connected to an icloud account has it's contacts deleted, the same contacts at icloud.com are also deleted and then the changes propagate to other computers and devices also connected to the same icloud account.   In other words, the contacts are deleted everywhere.  Also, any iOS backup to icloud does not include contacts or any of the other Apple data, like calendars, reminders, etc.  The only way you can get that data back is if it was on a computer which has been frequently backed up.  You restore the data from the backup.  (This reference to "backup" is a local backup, it has nothing to do with icloud.)

  • Should Pages and Keynote documents sync in the background?

I am using iCloud to sync Pages and Keynote documents between my iPhone and iPad. The documents sync fine when the apps are open but I was wondering if these changes are supposed to be pushed when the apps are closed. This way, when I disconnect say on the subway, the files are there and up to date. I can't seem to find an answer. If i recall documents used to push when the apps were closed but now they don't. Any advice on how I can remedy? Photo stream and Reminders are syncing in the background.

How can you be sure that reminders and calendars sync in the background, events/reminders will take up perhaps just a few kB and can transfer in fractions of a second after opening the calendar, documents may well be several MB or more and are more obvious if you are looking when you open an app.

  • New iCal no longer syncs in the background?

Ever since I upgraded my iCal within MobileMe and iCal on Mac to that new CalDav thingy, iCal doesn't seem to sync in the background any more, like the old one did with the MobileMe sync throughout the day.
I have mine set to sync every hour but it doesn't seem to sync unless iCal is actually running on the Mac - if I launch it and it hasn't synced in an hour, it starts syncing, so it's not like I'm missing syncs, as long as I make sure to fire it up every now and then.
I used to have it set to "Push" sync, but that was annoying. Whenever I tried to create a new event, after writing a few words for the event, iCal would lose focus from it (due to the sync starting) and I'd have to double-click my event to bring up the box where I can edit event title again (to finish writing it). Frustrating.

The Calendar is no longer 'syncing' as such and nothing you do in System Preferences>MobileMe>Sync will have any effect. You should turn Calendar syncing off there (the other data continues to be synced as before).
The Calendar now lives on the MobileMe Server and iCal reads it from there when opened (like webmail) - it does maintain a cached copy (unless you turn that off) so that you still have a calendar when offline. Changes won't appear until iCal is running. If it's left running and you make changes elsewhere they should appear pretty quickly.
I don't know why you're having the focus problem. I double-click in a day (when in month view) to open the pane for a new event, type the event title and make any necessary settings: I then click 'done' and immediately see the syncing icon appear. I do have the calendars set to Push. You can set the sync to various delays if you want, but as you've found iCal does have to be running.
You don't say whether you are also using iOS4 devices: someone posted that his iPad only picked up changes when the Calendar was first opened, and not subsequent one while the calendar was still running - he had to close it and open it again. I don't know whether this is expected behaviour or whether he has got some setting incorrect (I don't have an iPad or iPhone to check).

Try the computer apps PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac & PC):

  • Can a java program be run in the background?

    Hi all,
Can a java program be run in the background without the user being aware of it? I need to make a program that continuosly monitors a pc at regular intervals and runs at all time. It should be hidden(shouldn't display on the screen while running) from the user, and also, can it be run as a system file so that even if a user checks he/she would think of it as a system file?

I'm the administrator of all the computers. Then as I said there are commercial applications that do that.
Presumably you expect a problem now. And implementing an acceptable solution is going to take you months. Because not only need to 'hide' the application, you also need to set up all the monitoring and logging capability. And the first will require quite a bit of JNI work along with testing (in particular as it could interfer with existing applications on the users computers.)
    I need to
install the software in all the machines and i want
that the users who use the machine should not be able
to close the program through the task manager. If the users have admin rights then they can terminate a windows service.
And if they don't have admin rights then you can simply turn off the ability to install anything.
    I want
to know what the resources of the computers are and
that if anyone has added a resource to it or
not(attaching a flash usb thumbdrive etc). Lots of JNI.

  • How can I determine what is running in the background on my ipad?

I have had my Ipad for 6 months.  I use wi-fi and cellular 250MB data plan.  I have never exceeded 250 MB in a month.  This month I ran out of data in 5 days.  Also, I usually get a couple of days before I have to recharge.  Now I need to recharge in less than a day.  The only thing I can think is something is running in the background.  Is there a way to see what is running in the background (this is my first apple product, I have always used windows products so I am not sure I am using the apple nomenclature),  I have rebooted so I will see if that fixes the problem.  I am curious to see what is happening in the background

A double click on the Home button will reveal a tray containing all apps that are currently running (suspended?).
Side swiping this will reveal as many as are active, with a swipe to the right when on the first display will reveal further controls for the iPad, mainly relating to the iPod part, but also containing a screen lock option I believe.
Click and hold any one of them till they 'jiggle' and show a - you can then click this to remove it, relaunching the app as required in the normal way.
    Regards,

  • Issues syncing apps between itunes and ios devices - changed itunes store

I have had an iTunes store account for several years with the same apple ID.  Initially I connected that apple ID to the Belgian store and about 2 years ago I changed to the UK store, but still with the same apple ID.
Since I have several IOS devices, I prefer to use iTunes to update any apps I have downloaded and then sync them onto all my IOS devices using my local network rather than downloading accross the internet each time.  When I view the apps in my library it says a number of updates are available (right now there are 9).  but when I click on the button to go to the store and retrieve the updates - itunes store says "No Updates are currently avaialable" and suggests I sign in with a different ID.  However, I don't have a different ID.
This seems to be that any of the apps I puurchased in the Belgian store prior to switch to the UK will not update.   For a while, as a resolution, I was able to download updates on one or more of my IOS devices sucesfully whicever store I purchased them from and then when I synced back to iTunes, it updated them in the library.  Wasn't very pretty but it worked.
Now after upgrading to iTunes 11, although I can still update the apps on my IOS devices, when I sync it no longer transfers the updates to the iTunes library - I haven't had iTunes 11 long enough to determine if it's related to the same store switch issue or if it's a general problem.
Anybody got any similar experiences or solutions to consolidate all my purchased apps (which ever store) into one, so updating is transparenet again?

    (A) Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.
    (B) Reset all settings
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings
Note: Data will not be affected but settings will be reset.

As mama23dogs said check data usage, if you see any spikes you can drag the vertical lines in to that range and it will update the apps for that time frame.

  • ICloud Documents Not Deleting / Syncing

My iCloud Documents and Date information has been corrupted or something.
Basically, I open Pages or Keynote on my iPhone or iPad and with iCloud sync enabled it grabs 2 documents no longer stored in iCloud (at least visible through iCloud.com or the Lion System Preference). This wouldn't be as big of a problem except it shows the progress bar and nothing happens.
Upon trying to create new documents in either of these apps a small arrow icon appears in the corner but again no syncing actually occurs.
    I've tried:
    -reinstalling Pages and Keynote
    -restoring my iPad
    -deleting MobileDocuments folder in Lion
-deleting documents out of the preference pane
Nothing works. The data seems to be in limbo somewhere between my iOS devices and the server and now I can't sync any documents.
Apple needs to fix iCloud Documents. Everything else is working as advertised but the Documents / Data portion is awful.
And add sync to the Mac while they're at it...
    Please help if you can!

I'm having the same issue with IOS 5.01 iCloud documents. At first, everything worked fine and flawlessly between Pages, Numbers and Keynote on my ipad, iphone and macbook. I recently purchased an ipad2 and iphone 4s, along with a new Macbook air. I could no longer download items on icloud.com (on any computer). Pages documents were mysteriously disappearing and some documents would not load on my ipad. I also had the 'updating 21 documents' with a status bar that didn't move for 8 hours on my ipad. I tried everything: deleted apps, toggled iCloud on and off, logged in and out, restoring all devices, moving to a blazing fast 50MBPS internet connection, and even tried to launch a shoe at the closest cloud I could find outside. None of these efforts succeeded. The Genius Bar and express iCloud support were confused and told me  that my incident was isolated. I'm glad I came on here and saw this. Ironically; Contacts, Calendar and Find my phone work perfectly, no problems. Lastly, none of my apps are syncing properly with iCloud either; flighttracker, Soundhound, Djay and iBird. Weird. At one point all of this worked for about a week. Sadly, I ended my genius appointment with 'I think Apple is starting to become like Microsoft'. Sad day. I hope a fix is soon, if anything Apple should give those of us that purchased iphone/ipad iWork software a reimbursement. Its a lousy product and is pretty much useless until this issue is fixed.
