Can iCloud sync docs btwn iMac and Macbook?

Simple question - Can iCloud synchronize documents between my iMac and my Macbook?  I guess I thought that was the premise... seems disappointing to me.

G'day Robert,
The short answer is: yes it can - but (at this stage) only through an application that has implemented iCloud on both OS X and iOS versions.   The underlying philosophy seems to be that you only ever want or need to access iCloud documents through the application that created them.
As an example of it working as designed, look at iaWriter.
The underlying philosophy is questionable in my opinion (it runs counter to the idea of useful things like Quicklook on OS X, which let you view a document without opening the associated application).  It also makes it difficult to edit a document on OS X (e.g using MS Excel), and then share it with Numbers on iOS.
The odd thing is that Apple have not yet released a version of Pages/Numbers/Keynote for OS X with iCloud access.

  • ICloud Sync problems on iMac and MacBook Pro

When I add files to my iCloud/pages folder on my iMac, those files will not download on my MacBook Pro. When I add files to iCloud/pages folder on my MacBook Pro, those files will not download on my iMac. The files do show up on iCloud.com. I am using the same apple id on both computers. If I create a file on my iMac it shows up on my MacBook Pro but there is a cloud with a down pointing arrow next to it, but it never downloads. Vice versa is true if creating files on my MacBook Pro. If I create a folder on iCloud drive (iCloud/Folder) and put files in it they seem to sync properly, but files in subfolders created inside iCloud/Pages are the ones that do not sync properly. This makes iCloud Drive very unreliable for me. Help please? Thinking of going back to Google Drive to keep my files in sync across my iMac, MacBook Pro, iPhone 6, and iPad Air.

I have the exact same problem. iCloud drive on my iMac and macbook pro contain some of the same files, but not all.
Files that haven't synced are several days old rather than weeks to months old, so possibly this is a verrrry slow sync issue hopefully.

  • Help needed to sync apps across iMac and Macbook Air via ICloud

I have a new Mac and I want to sync (if possible) my applications such as pic collage etc between my iMac & my Macbook Air.
The main reason I want to do this is because I have set up templates in my macbook air apps and I want to use my iMac through the day and macbook air at night and be able to access these without doing screen share.
I am also looking to pay someone $150 to set up a few things for me. I am in Coorparoo if anyone is interested please contact me here or at
    Thankyou

Tracey almost any program you've purchased from the Apple App Store can be downloaded to multiple computers legally. Programs you've purchased elsewhere are typically licensed either to the user or to the computer and to be completely legal you'd need to determine which is the case for the programs you want to install on more than one computer. Most documents can be saved to iCloud (assuming you have enough space on iCloud) or other cloud services. Cloud services such as DropBox and Microsoft's OneDrive have applications that sync files automatically which allows you to share files between computers. However many (most?) applications don't automatically move templates into the cloud since they tend to be saved in the user's Library folder which often isn't synced. So templates must be dealt with on a case by case basis. (I'll often save a document that I want to use as a template and then make a fresh copy of it when I want to use it as my template)

  • Issues with iCloud - syncing Notes between iPhone and Macbook

Why won't my Notes sync between my Macbook Pro (Mountain Lion) and my iPhone 5?  The iPhone and the Macbook Pro are both linked to the same account, iCloud is turned on on both, and I've tried signing in and out of iCloud.com, but it doesn't seem to work.

First check that all your settings are correct, that notes syncing (mail and notes on a computer) is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the notes you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone'  or other non iCloud account (you can do this by checking in accounts on an iOS device, or the left side panel in mail on a computer), non iCloud notes will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your notes are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking notes syncing (mail and notes on a computer) in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling notes syncing.

  • Can Icloud sync with google calendar and gmail?

We use google calendar at my office and share it with our staff. I thought we would be able to sync those calendars with icloud and google. Before icloud, I set up an exchange account on Ipad, iphone, imac and it works well for calendar and email.  I thought I could replace that sync with icloud, but it seems to not be designed that way. Should google calendar and gmail users stick with google?

    THANK YOU ithos!
I have searched and searched to try and find a way to sync my Google calendars with iCloud.
You don't exactly say how to make this happen, but you gave me enough nuggets to put it together.  Thank you for responding and helping me put it all together.
I have 5 Google calendars (Family, Work, Church, Extended Family Birthdays, US Holidays).  My wife, two different assistants and I all share and update the calendars.  I want all this to continue since it affects every aspect of my life.  I sit at a PC at work and need to be able to view all those calendars during the work week, I also need to be able to view and edit from work (pc), iPhone, wife's iPhone, assistants computers, and our home (mac).  So, staying Google - for now, is what I need.
I just upgraded to the 4S and Siri is one of the main reasons.  Without iCloud syncing with my calendars Siri is USELESS with calendaring stuff.  So, I have to have Siri able to view my calendars as well.
So, with that info, here's how I got it all to work.
For those of you who need a start to finish explanation, here it is:
    1. Computer running the OS Lion (mine's an iMac)
    2. Open iCal on the Mac
    3. Open your Google Calendar
    4. In iCal go to iCal --> Preferences --> Accounts.
Make sure iCloud is listed under Accounts.  This was my default, so I didn't have to make any changes.  If yours lists something different, sorry.  I don't know how to change it.  But I believe this is a KEY component as ithos above mentions that the subscription be 'located' on iCloud.
    5. In iCal go to Calendar --> Subscribe
This will force a pop up asking you for the URL of the calendar you are trying to subscribe to.
Where do you find this URL?    I found this article from 2006 that gives the low down:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2006/04/13/howto-subscribe-to-a-google-calendar-using-ical/
Don't worry, even though it's from 2006 it still works.  Here are the steps in a nutshell, but you should read the short article so you don't miss anything.
    6. In Google Calendar you need to dig into EACH calendar that you want to 'Subscribe to' and find the unique URL for that calendar.  This will allow you to then force iCal to look at and scrape the data from this calendar as often as every 5 minutes.  As you follow the articles steps (they are very easy) then your iCal calendar will populate with the Google calendar data from the calendar you subscribed to.  I had to do this for EACH calendar I wanted to show up on my iCal calendar.
    7.  I then grabbed my iPhone and asked Siri, "What does my day look like tomorrow?"  She responded with all my iCal / iCloud (which are all subscribed to my Google calendars) calendar data.  I smiled
This ONLY allows the Google info to be pushed to iCal / iCloud.  It doesn't allow the info to go the other way.
It won't let Siri manipulate the iCal/iCloud calendar or the Google calendar.  But at least Siri can see what's already there.  So, a step in the right direction.
    Good luck!

  • ICloud Sync issues between iPhone and MacBook

I have a peculiar problem. I have iCloud turned on for Contacts, Calendar and Notes between my iPhone 6P and my MacBookPro running OS X 10.10.2. If I make  a change or add an entry on the MBP, it does not show up on the iPhone until I make a change to something on the iPhone, then the iPhone changes go to the MBP, and the MBP changes then, and only then, appear on the iPhone.
I have the same iCloud account on both devices. Very confused. (I have not done anything regarding Family Sharing, and I do have the iCloud drive turned on.)
    Any clues?

  • BT Yahoo mail no longer syncs between two iMac and MacBook

I've used BT Yahoo Mail on an iMac, Macbook and iPad successfully for some time with IMAP settings.  Following recent upgrades, the inbox is no longer kept in sync on the different computers.  Messages read on one computer are not marked as read on the other, and newly arrived incoming mail is not displayed on the second computer, having appeared on the first.  The only solution seems to be to rebuild the mailbox - tedious as it takes time, and you don't know until you try whether there is mail to be synced.
I'm using Mail 6.5 (1508) on the iMac, and Mail 5.3 (1283) on the MacBook.
Is there any solution to this please?
    Thanks.

  • Sync  songs between imac and macbook?

How do I sync my itunes libary between two machines. I do the editing on macbook( adding, deleting songs and sometimes editing the info) and would like to have it on both machines.

Many thanks for the guidance and for your patience.
I followed the instructions and the syncing now works.
My error was in inputting contacts to the 'On my Mac' group, and I didn't appreciate the significance of the iCloud Grouping in terms of the syncing process.
I can now create a contact on either machine and it is synced across to the other - such a relief.
But I am left with one or two issues which I could do with some further guidance on.
    1.  Over a while I have (wrongly) been creating contacts on a group other than the iCloud Group.  This has led to a disparagy between the iCloud contacts and the "All Contacts' group.
Is there some way to sync these to create one difinitive (and complete) set of contacts in iCloud.
For example on one iCloud account I have above a dozen contacts and on the other iCloud account I have 94 contacts.  In the 'All Contacts' group, I have 106 contacts.
    2.  I have tested out the syncing and, as I said, it now works fine and I have a much clearer undertsanding og the processes involved - and I thank you for that.
During the 'testing', I created a contact and then deleted it - but the contact was not deleted from the 'other' machine.  Do I need to waite a while for this to happen?
Once again, many thanks for all your help.

  • How do I access files that I put in iCloud Drive on my iMac and MacBook Pro, and then access them with ANY iOS device?

For example, I put some .pdf documents into iCloud Drive. Now I need those files but I'm not home any more----I have an iPhone and iPad at my disposal. They are ALL signed into the same iCloud account and they are all on the same WiFi network. Those .pdf documents that I so easily dropped into iCloud Drive earlier appear to be non-existant on my iOS devices. I do see my "Pages" memos here in iCloud, but the other things I have put in, I can't find. The ONLY way so far that I have been able to locate them is to go back to my iMac or MBP and use a Finder window and i have direct access to iCloud Drive there. Are they purposely not allowing us to pick up all files on all devices? Or am I missing something? Thanks.

First, to access documents you must use an app designed for that specific Document type. So Pages will not be able to open PDFs. The Documents app by Readdle can handle PDFs though. In the latter case, you'd open the app, click the menu icon at its top left, and click Open to go to your iCloud Drive. With Pages, if you had files outside the main Pages folder, click + then iCloud and navigate to the file's location.

  • CS3 License on Imac and MacBook Pro

    Hi
I have 3 licenses for CS3 Design Premium. Two of them are used on a PC and one of them on my machine (Imac).
Now I have recently purchased a Macbook Pro and I want to use the same license as that on the Imac for my laptop. Can I do it?
I am assuming that both machines should not be used simultanously. Now when I am travelling with my Macbook, my fixed machine (Imac) is not really used by anyone else but there are chances that someone might just browse through and use CS3 occassionally. In that case am I breaching the contract?
Is there a method where only when I log in then I can use CS3 on the Imac? This would ensure that while I am travelling people can use my Imac as a guest login but not use CS3.
In any case, my first requirement is can i install my single license on an Imac and Macbook Pro?
    regards,
    Alim

    Hi silverk,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand the need for all of your calendars to be up to date across all of your devices and how frustrating it can be when they are not syncing as you would expect. In this situation I would suggest reading over and using the attached article for troubleshooting.

  • My iMac and MacBook Calendar will no longer sync with iCloud.  I don't understand why?

All of the sudden about 10 days ago, I noticed that when I asked to refresh my calendar, that it just hangs on both my iMac and my MacBook.  And neither are syncing with iCloud calendar.  I'm not certain if my iphone calendar is synching or not because nothing is getting transferred to my iMac or MacBook.
The system status says all is OK.  My iCloud is still turned on for both computers.  So I'm not sure what to do next.

Yes.  iCloud on the web is correct although the latest stuff I added to my MacBook is not showing up because it won't sync.
In System Preferences iCloud is selected and they are turned on on both machines as always.
There are no other calendars linked to iCal.  I just have a Home, Work, and Birthday and US Holidays all linked in.
I did try something on my MacBook that seemed to work.  I went into System Preferences and turned off Calendars and Reminders in the iCloud setting.  That prompted a message that all of the iCloud iCal data would be removed from the computer.  I made sure the web version was accurate before I did this.  Then I shut down my computer and restarted.  When I restarted I went back into System Preferences and turned on Calendars and Reminders and now it seems to be working.
I'm about to try the same thing on my iMac.
If this works both times, my question then would be what would cause both my iMac and MacBook to disconnect as it seems from iCloud when I hadn't changed anything at all.

  • How can I sync my mail folders from my iMac and MacBook Air

I recently bought the new iMac and MacBook Air. I would like to access my emails on both computers. I have folders that sort my mail on both computers but cannot access them on the other computer. Thanks for your help!

What kind of email account do you have? (Who is it with?) The easiest way to do what you want is with an IMAP account, which actually stores folders on the email server, allowing any computer or device to see them. You cannot do the same with the older POP email accounts. Check whether your email provider offers IMAP.

  • IMac and Macbook pro have same Picture content both are being uploaded to iCloud

    Hi
My iMac and Macbook pro have the same Pictures now that i got the new Photo app all the information is being uploaded to iCloud and i am getting duplicate pictures
is there anyway to merge the pictures and only upload one of them?

HI, then try this and before you do this hold down the command keyboard button and then click the pictures that are duplicated and delete them. then try this -
Photos application for Mac Instructions that might help!
On your iPad,iPhone keep the iCloud on in settings for Photos.
if you have not opened the New Photos application yet to have it transfer your photos from iPhoto let it Transfer the Pictures.
once you have all the pictures from iPhoto to Photos then in Photos go to Preferences
there is general and iCloud tab and go to the iCloud and only uncheck the iCloud button that will make it so it doesn't sync with your iPhone and iPad for Photos.
Then in Photos go up to View and press show sidebar because with that view you can move your pictures easier to albums snd delete or move any pictures or make new albums
when you are all done with moving around your pictures or whatever go back to Preferences and turn on iCloud and make sure you have the optimize Mac Storage and then you are done! I hope this makes sense and works for you! here are the 2 pictures I'm talking about in settings

  • A problem to sync emails in Mail app between iMac and Macbook Air

    Hello members,
I have had a problem that can't sync emails in Mail app(OSX Mavericks) betwee iMac and Macbook Air. I have iCloud mail account and several Gmail accounts on the mail app.
Is there anyone to help me?

When both are at home on the same network and sharing drives, you can use a variety of tools.  Check the App store for fily syncronization.  Also, OS X includes rsync if you are a UNIX command line person, and there are shareware GUI's for rsync as well (RsyncX was one I remember).  Then there are commercial tools like Chronosync.
Another, albeit to my mind cumbersome way, is to use an airport time capsule and time machine.  You use TM to backup each machine, and use the option in TM to browse another TM backup to restore from (eg. come home from a trip, backup the MacBook Air, then log on to the iMac, browse to the MBA backup volume and restore what you recently worked on from there).
Or get a NAS device for home and use that as a common personal form of dropbox.  The key would be keeping a neat uniform directory structure for the things you need sync'd - like maybe just the Documents folder & subfolders.
