Can iMac have an external video source hooked up?

Thinking of getting new iMac with its 24" monitor of goodness. But currently I have a 19" HD LCD tv with an HD cable box and a PC hooked up to it. Am I able to do anything similar with a new iMac? Use the screeen to watch TV on?

There is no "obvious way" because an iMac is a computer, not a display, and there is no video input.
You can run Windows on the iMac, either using Boot Camp or a virtual machine program such as VMware Fusion, so that you don't need to use the laptop PC when you are at your iMac. Then, use network file sharing to transfer or sync data between the iMac and laptop PC. In fact, if there is a Mac OS X equivalent program, don't run Windows at all when you are at your iMac, and just transfer or sync the user data between the two computers.
You can use screen sharing to remote control the laptop PC from the iMac, which will simulate using the iMac's screen and keyboard to control the laptop. There is no direct feature to do this between Windows and Mac OS X, but there are free VNC applications. Run a VNC server on the laptop. Connect the laptop and iMac to a local network. Run a VNC client on the iMac, to view the laptop's screen in a window on the iMac's screen (or in full screen mode) and control it with the keyboard/mouse. On the iMac side, this is a good VNC client app

The limitation of screen sharing is screen refresh speed. If the networking speed is fast, it will work reasonably well, but it will never be as fast as a real video output connection to a real display.

  • Can I have an external video source run in a window instead of using the full display?

I'm aware that the 27" iMac models are capable of accepting external video sources, but I'm wondering if it's possible to have an external video source run in a window on the desktop, rather then use the full display. Does anyone know if there's any software I can download to allow this, or will I have to purchase a special capture device?

hat I DON'T WANT TO OPEN the window application FROM the Labview VI BUT IN the Labview VI. I think it's possible to do that and to do communicate the OpenGL application with the Labview Interface using an ActiveX but I don't know how. Can someone help me ?The desired behavior you desribed may not be possible with that application. In general LabVIEW does not offer a window object that other standalone applications can run it. The closest thing is the ActiveX container. If the programmers for your application created an activeX control of your program and they provided documentation, it should be pretty easy to incorperate the app and labview into one window. I recommend contacting the manufacuturer of the app to see if they have an activeX control version of the app.

    • Only if your video camera supports it.  Depending on how your camera works, you may need to add preview software to your Mac to use this feature.
    • Alternatively, your camera may also be able to record directly into your Mac while you are monitoring the Mac's display.
    • If you are using a consumer camcorder that supports HDMI monitoring, a small HDTV might be an simpler solution than your Mac.  For an example of how this is done, see http://youtu.be/GVpSkZD6qE4.
    • The retailer who sold you your video camera may have other suggestions.
    • If you need more professional results, an external preview monitor will offer more capability on compatible cameras.

  • Quicktime 10 doesn't recognize external video source.

Setting up my new 27" iMac, and discover that Quicktime 10 doesn't recognize an external video source fed in through the firewire port. It is an older Sony analog to digital video converter, and goes through a FW400 to FW800 converter. Quicktime doesn't even "see" that video source as a choice when recording, nor does iMovie, even though it shows up in the System Profiler.
Apps that were ported over from my previous system, however, such as "Video Viewer" and "Final Cut Pro" do see the source, presumably because they were configured to do so on the old system.
Is there some global settings file that I can edit, or something similar that I can do, to make it visible to all apps?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Quicktime 7 does recognize the video source, but newer apps, such as iMovie, won't. I'd like to be able to capture to iMovie, but can't without the video source being recognized. Is there a fix?
    Thanks!

i have an external hard drive hooked up to my time capsule andi can not get my macbook pro with itunes to recognize the hard drive. does the hard drive need to be formatted to my mac. it has been formatted and does have existing fles on it.  Thanks for the help in advance.

Well sometimes it won't boot, but the drive is fine.
You'll have to run through these steps and depending what occurs (or doesn't) will give you a clue, if you need to replace the drive and restore from the TM drive.

    Hi All,
Till now we have only BW Development box..
Our Landscape for R/3 side is R/3 Development, Testing and Production.....
Already we have connected R/3 Development with BW Development... It is working fine as now... We have finished our task at Development...
My doubt is <i><b>Can we Configure R/3 Testing to BW Development</b></i>....eventhough R/3 Development is already configured with BW Dev....
    <b>Can we have two R/3 Source Systems(Dev & Test) in BW Development....?</b>
Please help me out in this issue....
    Your help will be appriciated...
    Regards,
    Kiran Telkar

    Hi Kiran,
You can create second source system which will point to SAP R/3 Quality .
If you have transported all datasource activation requests to QA environment then all datasources are available in R3QA as well.
After creating source system , replicate datasources.
Only thing you need to do is to replicate efforts of assigning source system (R3QA)-> creating transfer rule -> Create info package and load data.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can I select an external audio source?

I have  iMovie09 ver 8.0.6.  I'm using a Panasonic video camera (it uses miniDV tapes) connected to my MacBook (white plastic 07) via firewire.  When I have the cable from the mixer going into the camera and recording to tape; when I transfer the tape to MacBook, I get the external audio source great!!!  However, when I plug the cable directly into the MacBook, it still gives me the audio (BUT) from the built-in mic of the camera.  When I open GarabeBand and record the audio, its the external and its great.  However, I don't want to have both recording at the same time only to overlay the GarageBand audio onto the video clip.  Yes, I've selected the 'in-line' option from 'System Preferences'.
Is there a way that I can select the external source while in iMovie??  Looking at some other negative posts, I don't want to upgrade to iMovie 11 either.

I came across a much older post which I believe solved my issue.  I connected everything up first, then booted up the MacBook; then I selected 'built-in audio' from the 'voice-over' option within iMovie.  It recognized it right immediately.  However, now I'm not sure that the audio is in fact coming from the 'hot' microphones that I'm receiving from the mixer.  But that's just troubleshooting.

  • Can you include an external data source in query condition?

    Hi all,
I have a user that wants to run a report off a subset keys in an external data source. Is this possible in Disco Plus?
For example, he has an Excel file that is just a list of employee numbers. He then wants his Disco query to only bring back the employee records for the people listed in the Excel file. Right now, he uses Cognos and can do this. A visual representation of this would be a condiition that would accomplish something like this:
WHERE EMPLOYEE_NUMBER IN (Excel row 1, Excel row 2, Excel row 3, ...)
We do not want to have to load the data into a table each time to accomplish this, but no other way readily jumps out at me. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jewell

    Jewell.
Given the situation you describe, I don't know of any 'reasonable' way to do this either the GUI in Desktop or the interface in Plus.
However - and just for the grins - there may be a possibility if done through the command line interface of Desktop. I truly doubt you'll want to do it - given the limitations - but ...
... in the command line interface you can put in the switch for /parameter such as: /parameter today trunc(SYSDATE), which means that your report is looking for a parameter called 'today' and you're putting in the data to put in the parameter 'trunc(SYSDATE)'.
So, you could either build the command line with a batchy-kinda-process in that via batch it reads a file as input and puts parameters, or hard code it manually (which no one would want to do). Problem is, if you have multiple values, I don't think it'd work as you're saying something like:
/parameter today (SYSDATE,SYSDATE-1,SYSDATE+!) - which I doubt would work as it probably only wants one value
    or if you had:
    /parameter today SYSDATE /parameter today SYSDATE-1 /parameter today SYSDATE+1
    it also might choke.
Alternatively, you could investigate using Plus with the Java command line utility and see if it's possible to do a similar thing via Java.
... so long answer to a short question ... (my specialty) 8-)

  • Can an iMac have two external monitors?

It may seem like a strange question, but you know MORE is better! I currently have a 20" iMac with an 18" Sony. It's so handy, I'd like to hook up another monitor. Can anyone help? I can find no help on Apple's site. IMAGINE THAT!
INTEL DUO   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi thorny,
Generally speaking, the Apple website's support section is quite helpful. However, I don't think it's strange there's nothing about running multiple monitors on there - after all, the system only has one video out port. Likewise, there's nothing on there about interfacing the mac mini with a dead badger...
However, there is a solution to your issue. You can get "GXM" devices from Matrox which will let you add 2 or 3 screens to your Mac. For more information, please consult the Matrox website @ http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gxm/products/home.php

  • IMac 21.5" MC309LL/A -- Can I have an external monitor?

    Hello all -- I have a 2011 iMac Model MC309LL/A --
Is it possible to have a 2nd display on this iMac? I've done some research and it seems you can with the 2010 model -- so im a bit confused as why they would take this feature away in a newer year. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

They did not take that feature away. The 2011 iMacs support external monitors just as the 2010 models do, using the same Mini-DisplayPort adapters.

  • Do 20" iMacs have the same Video Humming as 24" models ?

I'm at the end of my tether, now on my 5th replacement of the 24" due to different problems:
    1. Loud Humming noise when video dimmed, and sometimes all of the time. x 4
    2. Broken SuperDrive x 2
    3. Scratches and black marks on the case x 2
    4. Vibrating Case x 2
Most of the 24" models I have had swapped out made the "Humming Noise" related to the brightness setting of the screen - to varying degrees.
I'm sat here close to Midnight, no other noises in the house except for Huuuuuuummmmmm
I've done a search on the forums, and can't find any mention of these sort of problems on 20", so thought I would ask as I am considering getting one of those instead.
On a similar vein, does anyone know of problems with the 24" Cinema Display (noise related) as this is my second option (Cinema Display + Mac Mini.)
    Thanks

    Hi Simon
I share your frustration! I think I responded to your previous post about the black marks you had on your iMac - I had similar on my first 24". I'm currently awaiting delivery of the 6th replacement machine - again, a variety of problems experienced - all of them having the display-dim-hum to varying degrees (one sounded like it was broadcasting a TV testcard signal like in the old days). I think when I posted last, I was awaiting number 5, which arrived... and wouldn't even start - DOA. (Could the saga get much worse, I asked myself!)...
Amsys collected the iMac, and when they tried to boot it, it worked. They called me to say they were sending it back to me. I told them I would not accept it because it must have an intermittent fault given that I tried for a day to make the thing switch on. He admitted that he had not even investigated any further to see if there indeed was a fault, and agreed that under the circumstances that a replacement should be ordered.
When I called Apple to report the DOA on the 10th, they told me they were ordering me a new one right away... I waited patiently, but as I didn't receive any confirmation by email, I called a week later and was told that, in fact, they hadn't ordered a replacement. I was put through to Senior Tech Support, who told me that because the iMac had booted for Amsys, that my only course of action was to go to Amsys and retrieve the iMac, since they were not prepared to do anything for me unless I had the iMac in front of me.
I was in total disbelief. I explained again that this was replacement number 5, and asked to speak to someone senior. He told me that he was the 'best person to speak to' and that he had 'the power to do anything'. His words.
He then said, look, hear me out and see what you think... He said the best thing to do was to go collect the iMac (and I don't have a clue where Amsys are based), then sit it on my desk, and wait for it to break again... and when it does, he guaranteed that he would replace it with a new machine, with all the possible upgrades it could take. "How does that sound?" he said.
    "Unacceptable," I replied.
I said you're asking me to go out of my way to retrieve a product I sent back to you because it didn't work... to then use it for business purposes knowing full well that it has a fault... and wait for it to break again - risk losing data, downtime, and income...
I tried to believe my ears, but couldn't. I managed to keep calm whilst I explained again that Amsys had told me that they would be ordering a replacement. He said he would ring to check.
He came back to me, and - lo and behold - admitted that indeed, a replacement had been ordered.
That was the 15th Jan... and after calling every day to chase this, I only managed to get a tracking number 2 days ago - turns out it took a week to build it (where previous replacements have been built in 24-36 hours on 'Priority')... I think if you get a DOA, you go to the bottom of the list - something I've experienced in the past.
Just as an aside, when I last called Apple to chase this, I was put through to India, and I asked to be given a number for UK/Ireland Customer Support... the representative was unwilling at first, then conceded, and gave me an 0845 number. I called it... and went straight through to Churchill Insurance!!!
I called Apple back... and this time went through to Greece. I hung up.
Third time... India again... and the representative was indeed able to help, and found me a tracking number (and that's when I learned that I'd been sent to the bottom of the queue).
So, iMac 24" number 6 will be delivered on Monday.
Lord knows how this will continue to unfold... and if it will ever be resolved! I think I've had my fill.
As for the 23" Cinema Displays - I had 3 of those before the pink colour cast was eliminated, and then there was yellow and blue banding, so I resorted to 20" displays - which have been excellent, and I have 2 hooked up to my trusty G5. I don't know whether the problems with the 23" have been resolved, so wouldn't like to advise on that one. However, back to the screen-dim-hum, the Cinema Displays run perfectly silently in my experience.
At present, with the iMac situation, I'm seriously thinking about going for a Mac Pro and getting a separate display; though I wouldn't try another 23", I'd probably save up some more and go for a 30" and brace myself for dancing pixels.
Let's see what Monday's delivery brings.
All the best, and keep us posted as to how things pan out.

  • Can I make my external hard drive hook up to my thunderbolt port

So I have 2 USB Ports on my Mac. I use both of them and I am looking to get a Mic for recording youtube stuff. I use one for my wireless mouse, and I use the other for an external hard drive because the amout of space on my Mac is no-where near enough for what I am going to use up.
I am just wondering if there is a way I can either:
    1. Get more USB ports (if its possible)
    2. Hook up my mouse to a Thunderbolt port (again if that is possible)
or 3. Hook up my External Hard-Drive to the thunderbolt port.
    Thank you for reading.

    1. Use an USB 3.0 hub with its own power supply.
    2. It's not worth doing.
    3. Yes, if the external drive has a Thunderbolt or FireWire port. Otherwise, see #2.

  • Can i have more than one camera hooked up with iphoto?

I'm new to macs(about a week), so please don't laugh. I have 2 cameras, one Canon(S1IS), and one new Nikon(D50). My question is, will I be creating a problem by associating both cameras with iphoto, or should I configure them separately using their own software? Thanks in advance for all your help and suggestions.

Hey there. WELCOME to the world of Macintosh. You are in for a great ride with this machine and platform.
Some good news for you regarding cameras. The neat thing about iPhoto, and indeed, the Mac, is that there is no setup required for hooking your camera to iPhoto. In fact, ANY camera you plug into the Macintosh that it recognizes will automatically work with iPhoto!
I regularly use three different cameras with my iPhoto application. As soon as I plug into the USB port and power on my camera, the Mac figures out that it needs to start up iPhoto. iPhoto figures out how to talk to the camera, and gives me the option to import pictures from the memory card... no configuration, no extra software to install. I do this with a Canon camera, and two different Sony models.
    It's painless!

  • How can I have the external HD connected to my Airport Extreme show up on Windows 7 and 8.1?

So, I have an Airport Extreme which works flawlessly.  I have a 1 TB external HD connected to it.  On my Maccbook Pro and a windows 7 laptop, I can view the HD as "Z".  For some reason, on another Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Laptop, it is not showing up under my computer.  Any advice?  THANKS!!

You can share files with iOS devices by using filebrowser or other file app.
To play movies on the iOS device though you would need a player that is outside of itunes.. because itunes will not play from the router.. it has no media extensions.. neither does the TC which merely adds an internal disk but is otherwise identical.
So look up how to play movies with a player on the iOS.. there is several available I am sure.
    http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/apple/3512138/how-put-films-on-ipad/
BUT itunes depends on a computer running in the network.. so storing the itunes library on the AE is useless.. and will slow the network down no end. It is much better to put files where they can be accessed.. ie directly on the computer.
