Can iMac October 2012 boot from Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)?

Can iMac October 2012 boot from Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)??
It is needed to run applications that require Rosetta (Eudora e-mail, Palm Desktop PDA-PIM, Canvas drawing from ACDsee, etc). Thanks

Consider installing Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:

No. Your best option by far is to find updates or replacements for that long-obsolete software. In the long run, you'll have no other choice. As a last resort, you could do this:

The instructions are slightly out of date. That's not a recommendation and I haven't tried it myself.

  • How can I set to boot from MAC OS by default after I installed Windows?

How can I choose to boot from MAC OS by default after I installed Windows? I have a MacBook Pro Leo 10.6.8. I used bootcamp to install Windows XP SP2, but now if I don't press the option key it will start up with Windows, and I don't want that. Thanks for any help.

Select it in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

  • I need to update from Mac OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard

I need to update from Mac OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard, do I just buy Snow Leopard???

Yes! If your Mac meets the requirements:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'

  • Up Grade from MAC OSX 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I have an IMAC 4.1 currently using MAC OSX 10.4.11 which has the following spec
Proc 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo
Memory 512 MB 667 Mhz RAM
Is it possible that I can up grade to Snow Leopard 10.6, if I have the above spec. ?

seems like we are facing the same problem. All tech supports indicates I can go for Leopard but not Snow Leopard because we do not have at least 1Gb Ram

  • Can I upgrade my Macbook from 10.5.8 to 10.6 (Snow leopard)

I have an older Macbook that is currently running OSX 10.5.8 and i want to upgrade it to OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Am I able to do this? What will this do to my iTunes library? And does it come with a version of iPhoto?
    thanks for your help.

Some time ago, in years, there had been an offer to get an OS X and an iLife/iWorks
or other software in a kit from Apple for a slightly less price when combined, when
first offered new. This was the complete upgrade package, with iLife. Some had a
second DVD with iWorks included for a different price range.
Perhaps that upgrade path, once offered, may have been what came to mind?
I'd only seen them for sale online, and could have used something like that for
much older Mac OS X supported hardware that was missing OS X & iLife...
Anyway, thanks for your contributions & help...!

  • I need to change from mac os 10.5.8 to snow leopard and then to mountain lion

do i have to buy and install snow leopard before mountain lion? helllllpppppp

Yes, you need to purchase Snow Leopard, from the Apple online store - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard - and the, from the Mac App Store, purchase Mountain Lion.
Make sure that your MacBook Pro is compatible with Mountain Lion -
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    - and be aware that if you have any remaining PPC-only apps on your machine that they will not run under Mountain Lion - see http://roaringapps.com/.
    Good luck,

  • Updating from MAC OS X 10.6.8 snow leopard

I currently have a mac book pro MAC OS X 10.6.8 and i cant update because my computer wont go any further than the blank desktop background when restarting. It also looks like it skips the update downloads but still says they have downloaded and to restart the computer.

    Hello Nicole,
Sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Mac. To get you started with getting it back up and running again, take a look at the article below to resolve issues with start up. Start with booting up into Safe Mode to see if it boots properly. If it does, then restart your MacBook Pro like normal and it should work after that. If not, look at the article for some additional troubleshooting.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

can I interrupt a migration from Mac Book Pro to iMac and what are the consequences

    Les:
    Here are some options:
    • You could copy the data file to your laptop, work on it, and update the file on the iMac when you are back.
    • You can use an application like Log Me In to access your home computer from your laptop.
    • You can use DropBox. Install it on both computers, place your data file in a folder on the iMac, access it and work on it on your laptop and it will be automatically updated on your computer at home, even if it is not turned on, as soon as it is connected to the internet.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • Original iMac will not boot from new disk

I am having considerable difficulty getting a new disk to boot in an original 'Bondi blue' iMac.
I think I have researched this issue reasonably well and found a few references to it but no solution. I have more resources than most and have tried every trick I know. The story at the following link is not dissimilar to my experience:
    http://www.applefritter.com/node/20518
    Details:
iMac - original 233 MHz revision A with 160 MB RAM
New disk - 120 GB 7200 rpm Western Digital disk type WD1200SB
Format - HFS+ with 7 GB first partition and 107 GB second partition
Jumpers - both CD and disk set to master - normal for this iMac I believe
The iMac will seldom boot from OS X 10.3 on first partition or OS 9.2.2 on second partition with or without the other OS totally removed. I have reformatted several times and played with several disk drivers. I have zapped PRAM a few times. I sometimes get a grey screen but more frequently get a flashing question mark.
I can mount both volumes when booted from a CD and every test shows that they behave as expected. The disk boots properly in a G4.
I am prepared to try anything but I would particularly appreciate advice from somebody who knows what the problem is.

Eureka - it works - thanks very much.
It now boots from OS 9.2.2 on both partitions every time. I have yet to replaced the OS X that I removed earlier but I am not expecting difficulties.
My view is that http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25249 is badly written. I assume that item 4 should read 'OS X' and not "Mac OS". It may have been written on the assumption that users only want OS X and Classic on a single partition. My experience, particularly with early iMacs, is that it pays to have 2 bootable partitions and it is expedient to have OS X on one and OS 9.2.2 on the other with the OS 9.2.2 being used for Classic and for direct booting into OS 9.2.2.
My error was in paying insufficient attention to
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=1277&pcreated=1095792241#jumper
which clearly indicates jumper positions for single drives although a few words about it would underline the point. I had already discovered that these iMacs normally have both CD and disk set to master so should have realised that strictly they are 'single drives'. I had initially used the clear, but misleading, drive silk screen printing, ie CS, slave, master to set the jumper but should have changed it when checking the WD site later. Perhaps they could use this thread to update their FAQs - I will mention it to them.
In answer to those, on this thread and elsewhere, who were not happy with my sloppy copying of OS 9.x, I discovered some years ago that as long as you 'blessed' the end result in situ with one of the free OS 9.x updaters it is surprising what you can get away with. - I am not advising anybody to do this unless it is within the terms of their Apple license!
Now I wonder if I should stick with OS X 10.3 or if it is worth trying OS X 10.4 with
    http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/Framework.cfm?page=XPostFacto.htm l
Does anybody know how satisfactory it is and if it has serious memory or speed implications? My only slightly unusual software is Cisco VPN client.

Just an FYI.  The Macs named PowerMac date from early 2006 and before.  Use this tip to discover where to post once you get your Mac:
Site map of Communities and Categories
The cheapest Mac available new is a Mac Mini.   It is no bigger than many an external hard drive.  But the screen and keyboard and mouse must be purchased separately.  They support USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice, and pretty much any DVI, HDMI, or displayport display.   Although the iMac is certainly an attractive option if all you want to deal with is deciding on a printer.   I still recommend getting an Apple USB keyboard for the occasional times you may need to troubleshoot startup issues.  Normally not a problem, but as it gets older some issues can be fixed at startup or diagnosed at startup.

  • 27" iMac won't boot from anything BUT the main drive

    Hi all,
My lovely 27" iMac is in perfect working condition, but I thought I'd try to install a OS on a large SD card to see if I would gain any speed.
In the process of doing that (cause I never got that far) I discover that the iMac won't boot from the original install DVD. It simply spits out the DVD when I try to insert into the drive. I'v managed to make an image of the DVD (in a different mac) onto the SD card in order to try an boot from that. No luck. I've tried to insert a original install DVD from my Mac Pro into the iMac, which it reads fine and well, and when I tap the restart button it restarts, but stop with a white screen doing boot up.
If I try to hold down the option key during startup, the iMac WILL let me choose which OS to boot from, but if I choose anything else than the OS already installed it freezes.
I've even tried to boot my Mac Pro from the iMac install DVD - no problems.
I've even run a hardware test on the iMac - no problems.
I am running out of options fast! Please help a devoted Mac-friend.
    Take care.
    Peter

I WAS using the DVD that came with the machine, but I fear Apple may have sent me the wrong one?
In trying to solve the issues I'd tried other OS disc's (A Mac Pro install DVD and a OS X Leopard DVD) - but none of them would even boot, nor install of my iMac. I always end up with a white screen during boot up.
As I described, the original iMac install DVD would indeed boot my Mac Pro, do the disc seems ok?

  • IMac fails to boot from DVD

I want to repair my HD, but my iMac fails to boot from either the Leopard install DVD or the original install CD for OS X. What can I do?

    Gary:
Thanks for your reply.  How and what with both installers:  I hold down the "C" key until the Apple logo appears. The only thing that happenshat happens is that the little "sunball" spins interminably.  I waited at least 10 minutes before deciding that it was hopeless.
I hear ya regarding the external HD but unfortunately don't have one.   Mario

Thanks for that, it was really helpful.
Glad to hear that worked for you. While formatting an external drive with a Mac format is best if it will be used only with a Mac, if the files on the drive have to be accessible to a PC also, it's possible to format it in an exFAT format, which both the Mac and a PC can read from and write to. However, if you do that, do the actual formatting while the external is connected to the PC.
