Can iMac with Airport card be used to supply Wi-Fi for Kindle?

I bought a Kindle for my mother, but got the Wi-Fi only Kindle. I now find out she doesn't have Wi-Fi set up. She has DSL wired to her iMac. The iMac has an Airport card which I believe can act as a base station to share internet with other Macs. But will it also allow her to use the Kindle with her internet? She lives in another state and I would have to help her set it up over iChat Desktop Sharing probably.

apparently the kindle will not connect to "ad hoc" or "peer to peer" networks, which is what the airport card creates.
the better news for you is that you can download books from amazon directly to your computer and manage them there too. from amazon's web page download the "kindle for mac" program: www.amazon.com/gp/kindle/mac
then you can start downloading books to that application directly from their site. they will appear in your documents folder and can be copied into the documents folder on your kindle, after which they will appear on the device.

Maybe you are looking to re-purpose this equipment versus getting rid of it if so, the best thing to do is search the internet for tutorials.  And I say this because it's what I would do, there are a lot of tutorials online.    Hope you can find good use for them.  Worse case scenario if you can't find something right now, package them very nicely and when you come across something unbox and enjoy.  I've re-purposed a mac color classic and LOVE IT!!

  • 3rd Party Router and an iMac with Airport card

Could someone assist me in setting up an older flat panel iMac 800Mhz with a airport card to a 3rd party router (Speedport W 500V). It was really easy to set up the DSL etc when connecting to an Airport Extreme base station, however I have upgraded and trying to get conencted at my parents place, which have DSL but with the Speedport W 500V modem/wireless combo - any assistance to get the two connected would be appreciated.

Is there a SW tool similar to the Airport Admin
Utility which will allow setting and management of
    the third party router?
There may be (probably Windows only) or you need to use a web based configurator. It will depend on what the manufacturer of your router provides.
The manual which came with the router (it may be in electronic form) should provide guidance on how to configure the router via a browser.

No, a gift card can only be redeemed onto one account - it can then only be used to buy items for that account (it can't be used to gift content to another account).

  • Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2

I am using a Linksys wired router as the beginning of my home network. There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network. I have an iBook on the other side of the wall and about 10 feet and an iMac about 20 feet with one wall in between. These two have some fluctuation in their signal but only between 4 bars and 3. I just got an iPad 2 and it is causing me grief because it struggles to maintain a connection just another 10 feet from the iBook. If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router. That kind of defeats the purpose of buying an iPad. So, my question is how to rearrange the network so the iPad is happy in the living room where I mostly use it. I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room. Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network? I know I can use it to get music from iTunes to speakers but would that placement also work as a wireless extender? Would just buying another router for the Xbox location and putting the Airport there also be a better solution?

ladybastet, let's clean up some terminology. You should designate only one router for your network. At present that is the Linksys. Your wireless access point is the Express, and it gets its network connection from the Linksys. Is that correct?
If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router.
Now that you know your Linksys is the router, is the above correct? Unless the Linksys is also a wireless access point, the iPad's proximity to it will not matter. Only its proximity to the device creating the wireless network is a factor. In your case, I believe that is the Express.
There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network.
I'm not sure I understand. Is one Ethernet cable going to two places? What is it connected to, precisely?
Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network?
In the case of a wired router, yes.
I'm wondering if you have things configured properly, particularly if you have configured the iMac to share its network connection over AirPort. I'm even wondering if your iPad has unintentionally joined a neighbor's wireless network.
I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room.
Using the iMac to share a wired Ethernet connection to create its own wireless network is certainly possible, but it is less than ideal. For one, the iMac would have to be powered on all the time.
You do not need or want another router.
It is impossible for me to be certain of your network environment (meaning, the size and configuration of your home, the proximity of competing wireless networks, the number of network devices, and the potential for interference) but you might be better off replacing the wired Linksys router with an AirPort Extreme. That would give you the ability to create a "roaming network" or to use your Express to extend the Extreme's wireless network. I think this would be the easiest solution, but given the uncertainly of your description this expense may not be necessary.
Much of my confusion stems from your original question: "Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2" - the quick answer is yes, but a prerequisite question is, "what signal?" The only "signal" I can determine that may be relevant is the one created by the Express. Once we have the terminology fixed, perhaps we can fix what's wrong with your network.

  • Using WPA with a G3 ibook with Airport Card

    G3 800 ibook
    Running 10.4.7
    Airport Card
    Router DLink DIR-625
This is the only non-extreme unit I have. All other connect with no problem. When I set up WPA and attempt to connect with this machine, I get the following message
the wireless network "xxx" does not support the requested encryption method.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
    Thanks!

As long as you are running AirPort software 3.3 or better you should be able to connect to a WPA network. See KB 107795, AirPort Card: When You Can Join a WPA Network.
Verify that the network is NOT using WPA2. You can't join a WPA2 protected network.

  • Can't Connection With Airport (card)

My G5 can see my network, which uses WPA2 Personal.
I can connect with my laptop (a MacBook), but with my tower does not.
It can see the network, but I get "Connection timeout" as part of the message. Password is correct, which I know because of the checkbox, "Show password".
I'm using a D-Link Router (DIR-655), and can mess with all kinds of settings if need be. But I suspect it's my Airport card, which needs help.
Any clues would be much appreciated.

The router does use 802.11g, along with 802.11n; it can send a mixture. I was shocked at how slow the G5 does wireless web stuff.
FWIW, the way around the timeout problem seemed to be to reboot the router through a browser-based control panel I was able to pull up on my MacBook.
    Thanks for responding.

  • I HAVE A PREPAID PHONE.  WHEN I TRAVEL TO MALAYSIA I MUST BRING THIS PHONE WITH ME.  CAN I BUY SIMS CARD AND USE IT?  I AM TOLD THAT I CAN DO SO.

I HAVE A PREPAID PHONE AS I GO.  WHEN I TRAVEL TO MALAYSIA, I AM GOING TO BRING THIS PHONE WITH ME.  CAN I BUY SIMS CARD OVER THERE AND ASK THE SELLER TO PUT IN MINUTES FOR ME?   WHO CAN ANSWER THIS QUESTION?

That sounds like a great trip urgent! Ann154 asked a great question. Please share which prepaid device you have. 3G Prepaid Phone in a Box (PIB) is restricted for use with prepaid service for 6 consecutive months after activation, and is locked to the VZW network for 12 months after activation.
      • After 6 consecutive months, the restriction to prepaid service is automatically removed.
      • After 12 months, customers can dial *611 from their VZW prepaid phones or 888-294-6804, to receive the programming code to unlock their phones.
      • Non-PIB prepaid devices are not locked, but may require a program code to use with another carrier - typically "000000" or "123456." Sim lock does not apply to any VZW 4G LTE device with global roaming capabilities. These devices are able to be used with a third party local sim card without any additional steps to unlock the device. Thank you.

  • Panther Pismo can't detect airport card

Hi, I just bought a used Pismo on eBay running 10.3.9. I plugged in the airport card I'd been using in my iMac and the Pismo can't see it, not even in the system profiler. I ran a search under "airport" and I can't find any software installed with that name. What do I need to do? Will the Pismo see the card even if there's no airport software installed? Any other ideas?
    Thanks!
    -Ian

    Ian,
You could try downloading all the AirPort software you need:
    http://www.apple.com/airport/
Or reformatting the disk and reinstalling everything you'll need. Highly recommended as you have no idea what is installed, keyloggers and all.
Is the AirPort card in the AirPort card slot, or is it in the PCMCIA card slot ?
