Can iMovie 08 work in an Open Directory environment?

Hi
Users log in using their network accounts (homes exist on the server) launch iMovie and begin to import a clip/clips. The application stalls because it presents the internal hard drive as the save location. Of course network users have Read access only. Previous version of iMovie did not have the problem.
Anyone found this and if they have is there a workaround/solution?
Tony

For those of you interested the answer is no.
The workaround is to use Roaming Profiles (if homes are with AD) or PHDs (if homes are with OD).

  • Using iChat Server with Windows clients in an integrated Active Directory/Open Directory environment

A co-worker (Super Brent) and I were working on using iChat as an internal IM server after having used Openfire for a couple days. The reason for switching was basically that we had a Mac Mini Server that was available so we decided to take this on.
First problem: Knowing whether or not Kerberos was needed for AD/OD integration. We spent a ton of time on this, not knowing a huge amount about AD and with our server administrator on courses, we just kept poking at it and removed Kerberos.
For the AD/OD integration, we first bound the Mac Mini to our Active Directory server. We shut off LDAPv3 support as we only wanted to use the AD functionality. Additionally, we ensured that the search policy in Directory Utility only used Active Directory. Then we created an Open Directory master in the Open Directory service. We enabled a self-signed certificate and trusted it locally. After creating the iChat service, ensure that you use the self-signed SSL Certificate and set authentication to Standard. (no kerberos).
Second problem: Once this was complete, we started to test clients out. We were unable to successfully login using our AD credentials using Spark IM and Pandium IM. After trying nearly 100 different variations of server configs, we decided to try a new client. I installed Miranda IM on my Windows XP machine and tried a few different setups. It turned out that the magic potion was to make sure that the "resource" field was set to "Home" and use SSL for encryption. This resource setting was the deal breaker for the other IM clients as many of them such as Spark and Pandium do not have this as a login option.
We ended up using Pidgin IM as the Windows client of choice as it did have the resource variable and it's interface was the best suited for our environment and users.
I hope this helps someone out there as we spent days looking all over the internet trying to figure this out.
    Cheers,
    Frenchy and Super Brent

    Hi,

  • 10.7.2: still can't replicate 10.6 Open Directory or restore from backup

I am trying to migrate my Open Directory (OD) database from an Xserve running 10.6.8 to an iMac running 10.7.2 now. As before the update to 10.7.2, I am unable to make the Lion server an OD replica of the OD database running on Snow Leopard.
This is what I do (please let me know, if anyting I do is wrong):
On the Snow Leopard Server (SLS) in the Server Admin utility, I go to the Open Directory service, the "Archive" subsection, choose a target directory for "Archive In", and click on the Archive button. I am then asked to name my archived database and provide a password. Let's say, it is "OD Archive," the file generated will be "OD Archive.sparseimage".
I copy this Sparseimage to the deskop of my Leopard Server (LS).
I then open the same place in the Server Admin utility on the LS. In the "Restore from" section I browse to the LS desktop and "Choose" the saved Sparseimage. I click on "Restore," at which point I am asked for the password of the archived OD database. When I supply it, it appears that my OD archive is being imported.
However, going into the Workgroup Manager on the LS, and logging in as diradmin, into /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1, shows no users from my SLS having been migrated. Why has this still not been fixed?
Likewise, when I try to make the LS an Open Directory replica of the SLS, I again, even after this updated informed that my OD database admin credentials are incorrect, when they are not. I had surely expeced a fix for this by the time we reached 10.7.2.

Historically you have not been able to mix versions between an Open Directory Master and Replica, that is both would either have to be Snow Leopard, or both would have to be Lion.
I have not tried upgrading to Lion this way (I am currently leaving my servers on Snow Leopard) but I can suggest the following based on experiences with Snow Leopard Servers.
As you already appear to have done, in Snow Leopard Server make an Archive of your Open Directory setup
Make sure you also have a backup of the entire Snow Leopard Server so you can go back to it if you can't successfully move to Lion
Setup the hostname, IP address and DNS records (which might mean setting up a DNS server) for the new Lion Server
Check this using the command line
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Make the new Lion Server in to a new empty Open Directory Master
Test this new Open Directory Master by creating a test user and then deleting afterwards
Now move on to the restoring of the Open Directory Archive, when I did this last time, I found that I was given two choices, either to completely replace the Open Directory with the one from the Archive, or to merge the two together. I found that trying to replace failed and resulted in an empty Open Directory like you report, I found that chosing merge did work successfully
If the above still does not work, then you might have to consider the following alternative approach.
On the Snow Leopard Server in Workgroup Manager export all the user accounts except the Admin and DirAdmin accounts
    Optionally export all the Groups
Optionally export all the Computer Groups
    Setup the new Lion Server
Create a new empty Open Directory
Import the files exported from Workgroup Manager
This will not keep the original passwords. You will have to set a password for each account.

  • Can't complete initial setup - Open Directory problems

"Easy to set up, easy to run" my big ***. On initial bootup, the automatic setup failed. "There may be a problem with the Open Directory." A few days later, it was suddenly working. So I set up and enjoyed one, count em, one user account. Then it stopped working again. I can't set up a Group. I can't use Workgroup Manager successfully, either. The whole server has been one big mess of fail.
Is this a common problem? Is there a fix? A workaround? Do I need to take this thing back??

Check this site out for starters
    http://www.wazmac.com/serversnetwork/fileservers/osxserversetup/index.htm
It's not just for schools, and it offers a lot of info on setting up OS X server.
It is possible that there is some hardware problem, but it's more likely that you need to setup the server correctly. If you're not familiar with OS X Server, it's not necessarily easy.

  • HT201358 Can ARD3 work with the Active Directory setup on a Windows machine and without the need of Open Directory

We need the 'Golden Triangle' setup to work with ARD3 running on a Mac server with client Mac details retrieved from a Windows Active Directory. In this system, the ARD3 will be used to install packages from a Mac OS X server, where the client Mac list is gathered directly from a Windows Active Directory, which is already in place.
So, please guide me whether Apple Remote Desktop 3 is capable of getting client machine details from an Active Directory without the need of re-creating the client Mac list in the Mac server running ARD3.
If ARD3 can not be used in this case, do you recommend any other tools that can resolve our issue.
    Thank you in advance.
    Sudheesh.

ARD cannot directly obtain client information from Active Directory, no. It may be possible to create a script that would get such information and be able to put it into ARD, but I wouldn't begin to know how to write such a script. You may also be able to bind your OS X Server to ARD and create groups there. This article is obsolete for 10.6 or later but may provide some clues as to how to proceed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24276
There are a number of third-party systems that can manage Macs that may be able to draw information from AD, such as Casper, LANDesk, and others. Which if any would meet your needs depends on many factors including how many devices you need to manage, whether you're looking for a cross-platform tool, your budget, etc. This is a difficult issue to address in a forum like this since there are so many variables to be considered.

  • Can't login to new open directory users

I have a Mac Mini Server running 10.8.2 Server. I have existing users, most with no home directory and a couple with network home directories.
However, any NEW users I add (in LDAPv3), they aren't able to login. When I create the user, the "access account" option is checked and stays checked after the user is configured & saved, and stays that way when I relauch Workgroup Manager.
However, when I attempt to login to this user from a network comptuer, the "access account" checkbox gets unchecked. I can check it again and save the account, but when I reopen Workgroup Manager, it's unchecked.
    Help???

    Good tip from Francis.
Last night I finaly was able to get things back to semi normal to summarise here are some tips that worked for me.
Things first went wrong when I tried to add a new user in work group manager. After doing this I got some quite strange behaviour.
The server appeared to hang when loggin on with the new user. but ssh to the server was working.  Finally after about 10 minutes I hit the reset button on the server it appeared to go into sleep mode then automagically it logged in the user. Wow did it work .... no,   Bad news other users could no longer ssh to the server... Arrrr.  Cause tracked down to Kerberous reported as no longer running... Clients (my family )  startign to report cant access services like email ... help...
Rather than all the pain of tryig to fix that this is what I did.
    1) Back up OD in Server Admin ( not Server.app) OD dosent show up there dont know why ??
    2) Make sure the DNS is working
nslookup, dig, hostname commands ... all reported correctly  forward and reverse MYSERVER.MYDOMAIN.COM. domain and IP address.  I even re-ordered the DNS name so that the local address 192.168.10.X was reported first  on my local netwrok before the external ip of the server.
    3) Create a completly new OD by deleatign the old one by setting is as a stand alone then re-creating is as a new  master ( use Server Admin tool )
Finally Kerbrous all reported as runnig ... Try again to add a user...
    4) Add new user in Workgroup manager open on server not remotly this didnt work.
    5) set home account with apf://fqd.name/Users/
    6) make sure home account is accessable on network.
    6) set shell
    7) in Server Admin give all permissions to services new user will need. such as ssh login as required.
    8) in Server.app ( not Server Admin or workgroup manager )
check that new user appears.  The local OD must be in the Directory Exployer search path for this to happen
and the server must be binded to this path.
I added both /Ldap3/127.0.0.1  but also importantly /ldap3/MYSERVER.MYDOMAIN.COM
    9) in Server app click on the user then select the Advanced settings. Make sure user has home dir selectd as the correct /Users folder on the server
( this was not set at first and had the value of 99  no idea why ) there are also other important settings here.
    10) Finally restore OD with perevious backup to add back the rest of the users.
Apparantly this actually does a merge not a overwrite.
End state every thign finaly working .....
except the iChat/jabber server for some reasion wont accept authanicate users.... rrrr.
Bonjour works on the local network but well the point of havign a jabber server was for family in countary A to talk to grandparents  and have private secure video phone with country B so would have been nice if that worked
    Good luck
    Hope that helps

  • Can iMovie works with Canon HF20 digital video camcorder?

    Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone out there have this digital video camcorder (Canon HF20) because I'm looking into buying one. I would like to know if this camcorder is user friendly with Macbook (2.2 ghz). Thanks.

I am not an expert but I believe it does. I have the same camcorder and MacBook Pro. The laptop recognizes the camera and it is a straight forward import from camera to iMovie.

  • Migrate existing users from local domains to Open Directory.

Here is the environment I'm working with:
Small local environment (8-10) users. Everyone is on their own laptop, everyone is authenticating to their local directories. Network files are stored on a server, with everyone using a single shared user ID to authenticate and access the files.
I have just installed a Xserve, and it is now serving DNS, DHCP, NTP, WWW. I want to setup Open Directory in Master mode, create user IDs for everyone, and then assign permissions to the shared files area.
The one part that I'm not sure how to approach is the local laptops. If user "John Doe" has a local ID "jdoe" that he has been using on his local laptop, how does he migrate over to being "jdoe" in the OD domain, while reatining his "local" home directory and files? The problem I think I'll have is that when I create "jdoe" on the domain, he will have a UID of (say) 10001, but his local UID is 501 (as is the UID of all the other employees since they are all the first user on each of their respective laptops.) so when he logs back into his laptop after it has been attached to the OD domain, I assume that the laptop will see "jdoe" from the OD domain as a new user and create a new home for him (with the UID:10001), so now John cannot see any of his old files and such.
Also, as a side question: I've worked with Windows ID before, and I know once you join a windows computer to a domain and then login to it, it creates a new user and caches the authentication info, so that when the laptop is not connected to the corporate network, the user can still login and work. Does Open Directory do the same on the laptops?
    Thanks for any help.

Retaining password is a manual process of asking the user what his or her password is and then creating it in OD.
As for migration of account, it is rather simple, provided the short name of the user remains consistent across directory systems. For example, if you have a user named Joe User and his short name is juser with a home folder in /Users/juser. And you create the same account in OD. You can do these few short actions.
1: Bind system to the domain
2: From the Admin account, and using Terminal from root, navigate to /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users and find the plist file for the user (in our example, juser.plist).
3: Delete the file using rm
4: Restart the machine or restart Open Directory
5: Log in as the admin user and change ownership of the users home folder. Recall that when the user is in the local domain, the UID was likely 502, 503, etc (you do have a standard local admin at 501 right?) Now that the user is in OD, the UID will be 4 digits, something like 1027. So understanding that user attributes and user data are independent, you now have a folder in /Users titled juser and owned by uid 50x. You need to make it owned by juser from the OD domain. User this:
    sudo chown -R juser /Users/juser
6: Log out of the admin account
7: Log in as the user after choosing Other at login window.
Assuming you have your OD account set up properly, you will likely be asked to confirm the caching of the users credentials. This will path you right back into the user's home folder and all will be right with the world.
This is simple and quick. If the shortnames are different, throw an mv into the mix to rename the home folder to match the domain shortname. If you have no local admin, then you will need to reset DSLocal and start again.

  • Wrong UID from open directory server

I have a problem with a mac OSX server
I have an open directory server A, that shares all users to every other server i have.
I then have 2 mac OSX servers B and C, that it set up to allow network users. I can easily login with a open directory user, on both servers, but I have a problem. on server B it says the users user id is 1050, which is correct. On server C it says that the same users user id is 1000, which is wrong. Both server set ups are identical, as far as I know. On the Open Directory server A the users id for the user is also 1050, in case that is relevant.
I have checked if server C has a local user with the same name, but htat is not the case.
Any idea what might have caused this problem?

    Michael:
From your post, it looks like your machine is configured as a Standalone server, which means that OD isn't supposed to be running. Did you promote to an OD Master? If not, and you plan on giving it a try, search around on the web and these forums first for guides, particularly related to the importance of correct DNS.

Hi, There is a very funny Mac OS X Server 3.0.2 issue.
After I updated my mac os X server from 3.0.0 to 3.0.2. as my host name is conflict with other Mac mini, I changed X server's Mac mini's host name, computer name and localhost name. When I restart my x server. My defined "Open Directory Master" disappear from my server list.
Actually, I need to change some setting from UI, as it disppeared from UI, I can't do any about it. Is there any way to delete it from command line? or How I can enable it appear again?

As can't find the defined open directory server master, have to delete it from terminal command line as:
    sudo slapconfig -destroyldapserver
and then add a new open directory master.

  • Can't turn on open directory in the server app

hi, i can't turn on open directory in the server app, I am running the new version of Mavericks (10.9.2)
    please help me

If DNS services aren't properly configured and operating correctly, then various other parts of the OS X Server environment tends to be somewhere between flaky and unstable.
To verify DNS is working correctly, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and issue the following harmless diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to enter an administrative password for the sudo, might see a one-time message about the use of sudo, then see some configuration information, and then an indication that no changes are required, or that there are issues with the network or with local DNS services.  This tool will spot most local DNS and network errors, but will not spot an erronous configuration using the .local top-level domain; don't do that.
If you do not have another DNS server on your local network — the screen shot shows DNS isn't running locally, but it's possible there's another DNS server in use.  If you do not have a local DNS server (and you're on a NAT'd network) here's how to set up DNS on a NAT'd network — DNS is essential for proper operations of OS X Server, and on a private NAT'd network, that's only possible with your own DNS services.  You cannot successfully reference off-network DNS servers here (not the DNS servers at your ISP, nor at Google, and not via a low-end firewall that might have a DNS resolver, etc), as these off-NAT'd network DNS servers do not return the necessary IP-address-to-domain-name translations necessary for your hosts.    These name-to-address and address-to-name DNS translations are part of distributed authentication and network encryption.
