Can iMovie 11 use quad core?

Does anyone know, if iMovie 11 can make use of all of the 4 cores on the new Macbook Pro I7 processor? I am thinking of buying either the quad core, or the dual core Macbook Pro for iMovie related work.
I asked this at the Apple store, but they were not sure.
Thank you.

I am using a MacPro (3/2014) with 6 cores and 16GB of RAM.
Encoding a 58 minute video in SD is estimated to take 1 hr 10 minutes.
While the CPU monitor shows the "ProTranscoderToolsb" running at 460% and I'Movie at 58%, it is not clear to me whether this means that the I'Movie is using multiple cores (i.e. 5 of my 6 cores) and is multi-threaded.
Does anyone have an answer for this.
I was surprised that this render would take this long as I upgraded my old MacPro (2008 1st generation but with 4 cores) precisely for the additional rendering power.
My impression is like some others, that if I'Movie is using multi-threading, it is not using it very efficiently.  Apple needs to address this on all of its products.  It is ironic that Adobe (Photoshop 6 and CC which rip) appear to use the new MacPro's power more effectively than Apple software products.

  • Compressor 3.0.5 wont use Quad core on iMac

I am compressing HD footage down to SD dvd files so that i can put them on DVDs. I have all the batches running currently on my iMac 27'' 2.8 Quad Core.
When I look at the processor usage on iStat Pro, it says that I am only using 46% of my processor power.
Currently it is taking hours and hours to complete this project. And when I tested the video on my MBP Duel Core it processed at the same speed as the iMac. Something is wrong with this picture. Do i possibly need version 3.5...?

No. looked for Clusters the other day, but figured i shouldn't waist my time if they just did what compressor does. Perhaps i should have searched deeper.

  • Using Quad core processor for PE7

If I run PE7 on a quad core 2.5GHz processor, will it perform better than on a dual core 3GHz (planning to use 4GB RAM in both cases)?
I am planning on a pc upgrade for processing AVCHD movies taken on a Sony HDRSR11e.

Generally, I don't recommend laptops for video editing. They're built for portability, not power. Besides, this program needs A LOT of screen space, and most laptops can't give you the real estate of a 22" desktop monitor.
That said, these are very powerful machines, and the monitors can be set to a pretty high resolution -- so the interface should fit, although the type might be pretty tiny.
I do highly recommend, though, that if you go this route you select the one with the 32-bit operating system. Most of the software world isn't quite ready for 64-bit Vista yet.

  • Give it to me straight -- Can the new Quad Core iMac run Maya well?

Hey all, I've been hunting around the interwebs for reviews of the new 27 inch quad core machine and I'm having a heck of a time tracking down specifics regarding iMacs and their ability to run Maya, After Effects, other adobe programs, etc.
I'm a student right now, going on four years. I own a small graphic design/animation business and I'm afraid my poor little Macbook Pro is going to keel over on me any day now. I've noticed a drop in performance in the last six months, especially with Maya and After Effects. So I've been evaluating options, and I know it has to run OSX. Windows has only given me headaches in regards to Maya work. In short, it's gonna be a Mac.
I've priced out a Mac Pro, and I'd rather not spend 3 grand on a machine that doesn't have a monitor, and may have properties that I'm paying for that I don't necessarily need: monstrous expandability, server capabilities, a big-stinking CPU footprint. But the mantra I always hear is "Only pro models can run Maya". So I reluctantly began putting away money for a new Mac Pro, uncertain if I'd be able to afford the software to go with it. Then I read this article:
    http://gizmodo.com/5411073/why-its-gotten-straight-stupid-to-buy-a-mac-pro
In my mind, this article couldn't be more perfect for my position. It's telling me, "These high end iMacs are almost as powerful as the Mac Pro you can't afford. You can save a thousand bucks off the base computer. It comes with a monitor that you don't have to pay for. " But unfortunately the one question I need answered, that I'm having a heckuva time tracking down is "Can the stinking thing run Maya or can't it?" And if it can, will it be crippled?
So, please, anyone out there, can the new monster iMac run Maya, and if it can, does it suck at it?

No, there's no way to talk to Apple technical support via email, and they probably could not or would not be able to answer any questions about performance with third-party products. I doubt that more than a handful of Apple employees, sales rep or tech, would have access to any benchmark data on Maya with any model of Mac, and those Apple people would probably be those working with the Pro VAR channel or directly with large production companies.
I just got off the phone with an Apple sales associate who emphatically confirmed that the i7 iMac can run "all that Adobe stuff", but she'd never heard of Maya.... fun....
Not terribly surprising; Maya is pretty specialized and the Apple Store phone reps are generalists working mostly with consumers. Most people running Maya would be working with an Apple VAR or would otherwise have access to specialists. You might try talking to an Apple Pro Video/Film VAR - there are a number around the country though none in Salt Lake, apparently - or asking in the Autodesk forums:
    http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-maya/
If you search for "iMac", you'll find some comments, though none I can find yet regarding performance with the new iMac models. But if you post asking if anyone has experience with Maya on the i7, you might get useful responses.
    Regards.
    P.S.
And on top of that I can't buy a 27 inch display separately
Well, you can, and they're not terribly expensive; under $400.00. But that might be more than your budget could accept, which may be what you meant. I'd elect a smaller primary monitor and go with two displays in any case, even with an iMac. I find it much better for workflow to have a monitor for the primary canvas and a separate one for tool palettes, etc.

  • Does Firefox 13 run in a multi-threaded mode and can it utilize quad-core processors?

When purchasing a new PC, one chooses between dual-core vs. quad-core processors and some people claim that Firefox run in a mulch-threaded mode and treats each tab as a separate process and that it can fully utilize the advantage of a quad-core processor. Is that true?

Firefox doesn't treat each tab as a separate process. While this may be a feature sometime in the future, I don't know of any plans to introduce it anytime soon. Obviously, buying a quad core processor is going to be significantly faster than a dual-core, and your browser is usually less resource intensive than many other programs. I wouldn't use it as your purchasing decision. Firefox will run equally well on a dual-core or a quad-core, but windows and other programs will run better with 4 cores.

  • Can FMLE use 6 core fully?

I am recently want to upgrade my computer for higher quality streaming.
I am looking at AMD 1095(6core) and 970(4core).Since stream is about video encording, 6core should have better result.
But i am not sure if FMLE can fully use the advantage of 6 core processor.
Is 1095 better than 970 in this suition? or there are some other cup you will recommend. (perfer AMD but i am open mind)

FMLE can use multiple cores. it is certified for 8 core and 16 cores machines as well. for single stream, FMLE may not use all the cores fully but for multiple streams higher the number of cores better the performance is.

  • What would be improvements in Elements 11  from using quad core ?

At present I am using a dual core desktop.  I find that loading ACR edits to Elements 11 is slow.  Likewise the completion of an edit (after telling it to save) in Elements takes a while to flow through to the Organiser.
The Organiser often has a hissy-fit and stop working and I have to close and restart.
I am quite demanding of the desktop and program, often having up to fourteen layers in use.  Also Panoramas and multiple file activity.  I use RAW for most photos.
If I upgraded my desktop to quad core plus 8GB of RAM (currently 4). which of these would improve please ?

    Hi Peru Bob
My processor is 2.93 gigahertz Intel Pentium Dual-Core
    64 kilobyte primary memory cache
    2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache
    64-bit ready
    Multi-core (2 total)
    Not hyper-threaded
It seems that you are saying that it would be a distinct advantage to have more than 152 GB free ?

  • Can i install quad core processor on Macbook Pro 13"

    appreciate any feedback

Notebook CPUs are not user-upgradeable. They are soldered to the motherboard, not socketed. Furthermore, the firmware is not written to support a quad-core processor.
It would be less costly to sell your computer and buy a newer one with a quad-core processor. The new 15" Retina models both have quad-core processors.

  • Can you use specific Core MIDI inputs in LE7?

In various other MIDI applications on OS X, you can see a list of the current Core MIDI inputs and outputs, usually for the purpose of telling the application which input(s) and output(s) to use. For instance you might want to use something like MidiPipe to modify MIDI messages in the chain before a software instrument like DrumKitFromHell or VSamp. To do this you can set MidiPipe to use the input from the MIDI controller and then set, say, VSamp to use the output from MidiPipe as its input.
Is there any way to do this with LE7? I want the MIDI path to be:
    1. My MIDI controller
    2. MidiPipe
    3. LE7
There seems to be no way in LE7 for me to say: Use MidiPipe as the MIDI input. LE7 just seems to take over the physical MIDI input, bypassing Core MIDI altogether.
Does anyone know any way to tell LE7 to use a specific Core MIDI input?
    Thanks!

If it supports the Makie protocol, it might work... but I wouldn't purchase one on that basis without trying it first.

  • Can InDesign take advantage of quad core processors?

I've been having trouble importing a large excel table in InDesign CS3 on windows 7,  and found that indesign was only using 1 of the 4 cores of my processor, maxing it out and crashing because of it.  So my question is, is there a way to make CS3 use all 4 cores, or failing this, does InDesign CS6 use quad cores?
Thanks for any help on this.

I installed InDesign CS6 trial, but this problem still persists.  I import the file (about a 14000 line excel table, with formatting (this is required for what I'm doing)), but it only uses 1 core of the processor. Only 25% of what it could be using to do this.  Photoshop cs3,4,5,6 use all quad cores and flys!
Anyone know how I can get this to work please?  I'll try anything that might help.
ps I can't import without formating as I need some items to be styled so I can do a find and replace on them, to add indexing elements later.

  • Used Quad G5 Issues

    Hi everybody.
I am looking at picking up a used Quad core G5 which will be used for video editing. Are there any known issues that I need to keep a look out for?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Brian

    Hi Brian;
As you can see from my profile I have a G5 Quad also. I can't think of much else that I would be concerned about with purchasing one unless it might be to look at the radiator to see if it has ever been cleaned out. In order to do that you have to remove the fan assembly in front of it.
For me it has been a workhorse for the year I have had it. I have processed my photos on it. I have also edited some video for friends. It just does whatever I throw at it.

  • Quad Core MacBook Pro

    hi
anyone in the know when there will be a Quad Core MacBook Pro?

I doubt that Apple will use Quad core cpus on MBP, firstly because they have more hungry on system resources and they tend to sweat more, so... new battery, new box design and new cooling system.
and they it comes the software... Adobe already told that CS4 version will not be 64 bits compatible nor quad core compliance. And there is no software that I can recall that was written to use 4 cores!
has to be the system to do such think, and that is not good, and you can see that a Quad Core cpu is not 4x better than a Single Core or 2x better than a Dual Core, that is the main reason, it is kinda having a 64bitx cpu and use 32bits software... What's the point ? unless you wanna for showing, like buing a jeep and only ride it on he city ...
at least that is my opinion on the subject

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

Do you keep your data backed up?
If not, you should always do so*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
You never know when a hard drive or a directory might go bad.  Having a bootable clone is a must.
That link also shows you some tools you can use to recover data.
If you aren't backed up, try buying those tools first, before attempting to repair the directory.
Directory issues can be fixed with these tools*:
