Can iMOVIE HD convert a PAL DVD to a NTSC DVD?

That was all! Can iMOVIE HD convert a PAL DVD to a NTSC DVD? That's my only question. Thanks.

Hi
A. Commersial DVDs - No Not at all - Not even legal to discuss.
B. Home made DVDs (without copy protection)
NTSC ---> PAL.
• Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL-DVD players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
PAL ---> NTSC.
• If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
• If on NTSC-DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to conver the PAL DVD to streaming.DV
• I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
• MPEG Streamclip (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
• Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
I burn to
• Verbatim DVD-R
• Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
• Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)

OK, the videoformat may be changed (PAL, NTSC) by plugin a specified cable to be connected the iPhone to the TV, but how can  I force to have PAL-format instead of NTSC to be send to iMovie via the USB-cable? Al this transcoding afterwards takes a lot to much time. Is there a solution before sending the clips?

Well, thanks a lot.  iMovie '11 is similar, but not identical and unfortunately I don't seem to find any "Frame Rate Pop-Up menu" when I generate a new Project. Do not find an "Aspect Ratio Pop-Up" either. Also the help does not speak of this options.  I just have to choose a Theme and that's it. Also the "Settings" Menu for the Film does not help.
I also checked the general settings for iMovie:
So I would dare say, there is actually no possibility anymore, to set the output format. And also when I create the output file, there is nothing more than a short list of resolutions.
I do not understand why all options were taken away. I admit, I am a little disappointed.
    Best regards

  • PAL DV footage to NTSC DVD help wanted!

Hi there, apologies if this has been tackled elsewhere, but I couldn't locate it!
I have a finished PAL edit of around 90 minutes in FCP 4.5 that I have output to a PAL DVD via DVD SP 4/Compressor 2. Following this, the client has also asked for an identical NTSC DVD to send to the USA. Luckily I have the edit still loaded in FCP - therefore: This is the first time I have needed to do a standards conversion. Can anyone advise what the best method/workflow for creating this NTSC DVD is?
Many thanks in advance for your time, TP

You didn't understand what my last post said.
I said go from his PAL DV edit in FCP to a DV tape (DVCam preferrably). Then have the PAL DVCam tape transferred to another DVCam tape in NTSC.
PAL is better quality that NTSC so there will be some loss just because there is less resolution in NTSC than PAL, but keeping it on a DVCam tape is fine.
Then log the footage back into FCP with NTSC settings and then edit/export/author.
I said nothing about tranferring it to analog or VHS. I don't know where you got that one. He said his original footage was edited in DV.
And YES, if you take it to a "professional" dub house it will turn out better than most software conversions is what i meant. I have used Lightning Media in Hollywood for years and their stuff turns out great.

  • Making a PAL version of an NTSC DVD

    Hello all.
I have recently finish production on a short film, made a DVD with extras for the crew, and now need to send one to Australia (PAL DVD). What is the best way to transform my NTSC DVD project to PAL. Do I need extra software to do this, or simply use the PAL settings on my NTSC video and let compressor do the work? Could I change my DVD SP project file to PAL and let DVD SP work it's magic?
    Using:
    DVDSP 4
    Compressor 3
    Thanks everyone!

    Hi:
    Another one:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=976262&tstart=15
And something to take in account is that "ussually" DVD players & TVs in PAL countries can play NTSC DVDs (what doesn't happen in NTSC countries where most of the equipmnets cannot read/play PAL movies).
You could check that with your contact/customer in Australia.
    Hope that helps !

  • Convert a PAL VHS tape to NTSC

    Hello folks,
I've got a few PAL format VHS tapes from a client who would like them converted to NTSC. If I get my hands on a PAL format VCR should I be able to capture the clip into a FCP timeline and then render into a NTSC output? Also do I need anything special in regards to a capture device? I normally use a Sony DVMC-DA2 to capture from my NTSC VCR into my mac. Or is the capture box blind to video format?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    > Compressor may do this conversion but Nattress's
Standards Converter will likely do it better ...
    Hmm . . .
    Not too sure about that.
I bought the Nattress system and struggled with it.
Then Hanumang gave me this Compressor recipe:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=512672
    The result was stunning . . .
    Andy
I fully accept, of course, that I may have been doing something wrong with the Nattress system but I found it very complicated and the instructions sadly vague (sorry Graham).

  • When to convert from PAL to NTSC?

I want to convert PAL DV movies to NTSC DVDs. Should I do the PAL to NTSC conversion as I export the QT movie, which QT seems capable of, or should I drop the PAL QT movie into Compressor and do the conversion there? Any advise or reports of experience with this process would be appreciated.

    Hi
As I know and try, first convert your movie to NTSC and then convert it to MPEG.
converting DV-PAL to MPEG-2 NTSC is taking too long.
good converting takes 1.2 hour to 1 min of video on G5 Dual 2.5GHz.
you can download my compressor droplets (compressor 2).

  • H264 MP4 PAL to NTSC DVD

Im having issues convertin an H264 mp4 PAL file to an NTSC DVD.  Im getting blocking and stuttering on playback after I use Toast to burn the DVD.  Ive tried to convert the files in mpeg stream clip and in QT but to no avail.  Getting errors with both.  This is an odd scenario in my book, so I figured I would put it out there to see if anyone has had any luck.  Thanks All.

Have you tried JES Deinterlacer? Much better for transcoding.
Also, it might be advantageous to convert first into an editable video (anything with low compression) before transcoding. The way you do it, you are asking for two major steps simultaneaously.
Also, do the encoding to MPEG2 (for the DVD) as a separate last step (in Compressor)

  • Made a great NTSC dvd.  is there a trick to make this into PAL?

Hmmm... ok. so I made a great DVD in the NTSC format. It's wonderful! GReat overlays, submenus, the whole bit.
I made PAL copies of my assets through compressor, tried to put them in the project and was rejected. I changed the format in preferences to PAL and it didn't make a difference.
Do I have to go through all those steps again to make a similar PAL dvd? Is there a simple trick which will allow me to make a PAL dvd using this NTSC dvd I made in DVDSP? Something tells me I should be able to do it. Any pointers? much obliged!!!!!

I did as you said. Removed every shred of ntsc evidence. I was able to add pal copies of these videos easily, but when I went to burn the dvd it said:

  • How to make a NTSC DVD for the USA

I want to put some movies on a DVD for some relatives to play on their DVD player in USA which uses NTSC I believe.
How do I convert my PAL footage to play on their machine in iDVD6?

    Hi Alexander
Two ways. One bad and one very good.
    • Burn a NTSC-project in iDVD - BAD AND LOSY QUALITY
    • Open Your movie in JES_Deinterlacer - Google it - it's free and let it convert Your PAL (25fps) project
to NTSC (29.97fps) then start a new iDVD NTSC-project and drop this new converted movie into
    this.
This should be enough - BUT You can do more.
    • Now Save as a DiskImage to eg Desktop
    • Burn this by Apple Disk Util tool or Toast™ - AT AN AS SLOW speed as possible eg x1, x2 or x4
    • Burn it on high quality media: I use Verbatim DVDs
    • Use DVD-R (not +R or +/-RW)
Doing the last steps gives a DVD that has less writing errors = Can be played on more types of player
eg. stand alone DVD-player or PCs
Yours - HAVE TESTED THIS and got a very good result - confirmed from US: Bengt W

  • NTSC DVD created with iMovie 6.0.3. Need to convert to PAL.

Is there a way to do this without starting over? Can I switch iMovie from NTSC to PAL? Can I take my iMovie NTSC project and copy it to a new iMovie window after switching the preferences to PAL? Would that keep chapters in place? Can Toast or something do this? I sure hate to totally start over.

    Hi
    Please Karsten
    b) export your iMovie project; drag the resulting file into a new PAL IDVD project; iDVD will ask you to keep or change the standard
IS NO GOOD WAY at all - It works but resulting DVD is barely viewable ! (jumpy, un-sharp and really bad)
    a) is an excellent choice as long as TV is fairly modern - else result will be Bl/W
    My notes on this:
PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
    A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
    C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
    • Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
    • I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
    • JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet) to convert to NTSC

PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL  (25 fps)   625   lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720
If iDVD hangs on PAL or NTSC.
    Bengt W wrote
Deleting iDVD pref. file - should return You into NTSC mode.
Yes iDVD can switch to PAL - BUT as You see with a rather lousy result.
    a. Need to convert to PAL - most often not - Most PAL-player can playback NTSC
and on a fairly new TV in color. (old TV in Bl/W)
(Other way around - from PAL to NTSC most often a must - few NTSC-player can use PAL)
    b. IF MUST - then use JES_Deinterlacer to do this conversion - so much better and free.
My list on this (or rather PAL --> NTSC - just think the other way around)
I have to send it overseas
That too can be a problem. As USA = NTSC = 29.97fps and EU = PAL = 25fps.
DO Not let iMovie or iDVD do this conversion from one to the other - Result will be Very
    BAD
I save the movie as a full quality QuickTime .mov file then I use JES_Deinterlacer to do the conversion - then I cont. in iMovie or iDVD with project set accordingly.
JES_Deinterlacer is free on Internet and there are Pro applications but not that much better and costs are astronomical.
    PAL-DVDs - don't play in US
NTSC-DVDs - usually plays well in EU
All plays well on a Mac - What ever.

  • NTSC DVD doc for PAL Europe. Updated Advice on IF I need to convert & HOW?

I have read with interests several posts on playing NTSC, all region DVDs on PAL DVD players. I hope someone may have some updated advice for my situation. In brief, I would like to give out DVD copies to festival goers in France where my Doc will play in April. I thought to produce DVD-Rs on my Mac.
With a film acquired documentary(24fps), transferred to NTSC video (29.97 fps) sitting as both Avid and Final Cut Pro Media on my trusty G-4, I am now ready to export a Quicktime Movie and then encode to MPEG-2, and "author" a DVD in DVD Studio Pro.
Will an NTSC DVD now play on most DVD players and Televisions in Europe? (A contact stated their "players are bi-standard NTSC and PAL", but I'm still uncertain this means my DVD-R or replicated NTSC will play).
Should I make a PAL DVD?
IF I try a PAL DVD is it really as simple as exporting a Same as Source Quick Time Movie from Avid or FCP then using the QT MPEG-2 exporter and selecting "PAL" from within Quick Time? Then I just create a new Pal project in DVD Studio Pro?...... Even if it is that simple to create PAL from QT and my media, I don't see how my 24 fps/29.97 fps doc now magically becomes PAL 25 fps / 59.97 fps just because I converted it to MPEG-2.
Do you all recommend I try to make my own PAL DVD or should I just take my already authored NTSC DVDs and cross my fingers.
I really appreciate any newer thoughts on this topic. I'm an old pre-digital film guy so be kind.
    Thanks, Rob
    G-4 Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Yes, although the vast majority of newer European DVD players and TVs have no problems with NTSC DVDs, the only way to be sure (well, almost sure) is to burn a PAL DVD. You can't legislate for the fact, however, that not all DVD players can play all DVD-R authored disks, but that's a seperate problem!
I generally use After Effects for quick and dirty (but good quality) standards conversion. Whatever you do don't just try exporting your project via Quicktime using a PAL as this will only change the colour space and not the frame rate or frame size. If you use QT to change frame rate it will simply repeat every fifth frame to get to 30fps which will give you jerky motion.
Here's a step by step guide to doing the conversion in Compressor 2, using "optical flow" to interpolate to get the extra frames :

  • Is there a way to import a DVD into iMovie where it can be re-worked and then saved as a new DVD?

I have converted several VHS video tapes to DVD's and want to work with them in iPhoto to create better versions.
How do I import the DVD files into iMovie?

This tip will show you how to import your home movie on DVD into iMovie 11 for editing. It will not work on commercial, copy-protected DVDs. (Ripping commercial DVDs is against the Terms of Use of the Apple Discussions).
DVDs are encoded by iDVD into MPEG2, which iMovie cannot edit. So you need to convert the DVD into a codec that iMovie can edit. For highest quality, I recommend that you convert the DVD to Apple Intermediate Codec. There is a free tool called MPEG Streamclip that will do this. You will also need to install the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component.
    Here are the details.
    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically, quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to the DVD.
    6) Drag the Video_TS folder from your DVD and drop it into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
    9) Optional steps.
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like. If you don't know which is best, try a short clip both ways. I usually do not deinterlace.
9b) Optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/Movies... and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • Can a NTSC Panasonic camcorder be used with OSX 10.6.7 and be converted to PAL

I have the opportunity to buy a panasonic camcorder in USA which records in NTSC and the software to install is NTSC.
As I live in Australia and the TV & Video is PAL.
Can the software be installed and allow the mac to convert to PAL in iMovie or will I require other conversion software?

You can choose to have your project be in NTSC or PAL within iMovie under Project Properties. I don't know at all what the software is supposed to do and wouldn't know if it is even compatible with Mac OS - and, I don't think you need it. iMovie will import and is compatible with many different cameras and camcorders; take a look at this article (and be sure to click on the link for supported cameras):
