Can IMovie really do it?

I find something very interesting missing from the many postings here. Has anyone in fact imported HD footage and then edited in HD in IMovie? If so, please tell us about it. How long did it take? What was the differences when editing HD in IMovie vs DV footage? How about those Gee Three plug-ins. Did they work fine while editing in HD?
The bottom line.....Can IMovie really edit HD footage and produce a clean HD movie? Is Apple just hyping when they say you can editing in HD in IMovie?
Emac   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Yup; I edit HDV with iMovie HD (5 and now 6).
As Karl suggests, d'you really think it'd be called iMovie HD if it couldn't? ..And would the Sony man have jumped up on the stage with Steve J at MacWorld the other year to push the Sony FX1 camcorder if it couldn't?
..OK; I know iMovie 3 couldn't edit video properly, to start with ..but yes: you can edit HDV with iMovie HD. The results are beautiful.
There are, however, a few things to bear in mind:
1 - The faster your Mac, the faster iMovie will work with HDV footage. The Mac has to convert, on the fly, from the MPEG-2 format of HDV into the DV/QuickTime format which iMovie uses ..while you're importing. On my Mac mini and G4 PowerBooks that meant that importing the footage from the camcorder took twice or three times 'real time' to import ..sometimes 4x real time. So importing can be -s-l-o-w- ..That's why I eventually got a faster Mac, after checking out import speeds at the London Apple Store on their hardware. I bought the fastest Mac I could which was also a PowerPC. So I got a quad G5, with 4GB of RAM. This imports HDV in real time, so importing is exactly like importing normal DV. No faster, no slower: identical.
2 - Editing in HDV is exactly like editing in normal DV ..in fact it's the same as normal DV once it's imported and temporarily converted into Apple's Intermediate Codec format. Everything works just like normal: transitions, titles, importing pictures and sound, etc. Rendering titles and transitions, etc, took longer than normal DV on the G4 Mac mini and PowerBooks ..but that's not surprising, as every HDV frame has about 4x the information or detail in it. Rendering is back to the speeds of normal DV using the G5 quad.
3 - Outputting back to a camcorder is just like with normal DV ..except that it takes a LOT longer! ..The edited material has to be converted by the Mac from the temporary Apple Intermediate Codec format back into "Long-GOP MPEG-2" format to send to the camcorder ..and that took, on those G4 Macs, about 10x real time. So an hour of video had to be left overnight to Export back to a camcorder. On the G5 quad I've got that down to under 2x real time by (a) using a faster Mac, (b) keeping projects on a second internal disc, instead of on the main system disc or on a - slower - external FireWire disc, (c) using the fastest possible (10,000rpm) internal disc (..a 74GB Western Digital 'Raptor' ..there is a later, higher capacity - 150GB? - version, but that - reportedly - may presently have problems in a Mac, without a separate controller card to drive it). I intend to 'RAID' or to 'stripe' two of these WDs together, when the appropriate controller card arrives, to give what promises to be even faster disc access, and that may cut the export time even further, to perhaps around 1.5x real time.
I haven't yet used GeeThree plug-ins with HD footage: I tend to be rather conservative with my transitions, and just use simple things - usually - like cross dissolves, Fade In and Fade Out and - especially - Wash In and Wash Out. GeeThree (see their site) could probably give you more info about their plug-ins for HDV.
iMovie 6 originally gave very badly jerking PAL DV output to camcorders, as if it was sending NTSC 30fps video instead of PAL 25fps. Matti pointed this up, and the 6.0.1 update was very quickly posted, and has fixed that problem. (If you only use American-style NTSC video, you probably wouldn't have noticed this oddity.)
"..Can IMovie really edit HD footage and produce a clean HD movie?.." Yes, absolutely. I haven't got round to exporting any as QuickTime H.264 and putting it up on the web, but I shall eventually (..sometimes I have other things to do besides fiddling with video..!) and then you'll see - roughly - what it looks like.
"..Is Apple just hyping when they say you can editing in HD in IMovie?.." No. They're absolutely correct. But you do need a fast Mac to make the most of it, so that importing, rendering and - especially - exporting don't take t-o-o -l-o-n-g-

  • Can iMovie 11 REALLY import and edit 24FPS video?

    Hi,
I contacted technical support to ask a pre-sales question:
Can iMovie 11 import and work with 24FPS video shot at 1920x1080P? I ask this because the new Nikon D7000 captures video at this frame rate, and I know the Canon EOS 7D and 5D MarkII also do. I was told "yes" by the technical support rep.
Can someone please confirm whether you can import/edit/export a 24FPS timeline?
    Thanks so much.

AWESOME! Thanks AppleLou for checking and performing your own test!
I will be purchasing the upgrade to iLife 11 now
    Best Regards,

  • Can iMovie HD 6 do inserts?

Can iMovie do inserts? I'm making a music video in which we plan to shoot a wide view of the band and then insert closeups of various performers.

    Hey, Leigh.
I looked all over for an online tutorial but haven't been able to find one yet. In the meantime, I'll try to explain using the Led Zep classic, "Stairway to Heaven."
Say you shoot the band with two cameras -- one static shot from the back of the club with a cam on a tripod, another with a close-up, handheld cam. You want to edit the footage together so that the base footage is the long, static shot, but occasionally you can cut in footage from the hand-held, close-up cam. Here's how to do it:
    1. First, import the whole song from the tape with the static, tripod, back-of-the-club footage. Once you have that clip imported, drag it into your timeline.
    2. Make sure that clip is selected (highlighted) in your timeline. Go to the ADVANCED menu and select EXTRACT AUDIO. This will remove the audio from your video clip and place it on its own audio track beneath the video track in the timeline.
    3. You now have "Stairway to Heaven" imported into your project and the video and audio are on two separate tracks in the timeline.
    4. Switch tapes and import the first piece of footage you want to use from the close-up, hand-held camera. Say you want close up of Robert Plant starting with the lyrics "all that glitters is gold" toward the beginning of the song. Import that footage from your close-up tape, where it will appear in your bin.
    5. Click on it so it shows up in your preview window. Now, drag the triangles underneath that window so your close-up footage is cropped to Plant singing "all that glitters is gold/and she's buying a stairway to heaven."
    6. Go to the EDIT menu and choose COPY.
    7. Go back to your timeline and click on the original footage you brought in of the full song from the back-of-the-club camera. Play it until it gets to the point where you want your new footage to begin. In this example, you would play through the beginning of the song. When the vocals start, you would play through "There's a lady who's sure" and then STOP just before the next lyric, "all that glitters, etc." When you've got the playhead stopped just at the point before "all that glitters is gold" starts ( the same point your second imported, close-up clip starts) go to step 8.
    8. With your original, full-length clip selected in the timeline and the playhead stopped just before the vocals "all that glitters is gold" begin, go to the ADVANCED menu and choose "PASTE OVER AT PLAYHEAD." This will paste your short close up shot of Robert Plant singing "all that glitters is gold/and she's buying a stairway to heaven" right over the footage of him singing the same line from the originl, full-length clip, REPLACING it. When you play it back, you will see the original, full-length, back-of the club shot through the beginning of the song and the singing of the lyrics "There's a lady who's sure" and then you'll see your close-up footage of Plant singing "all that glitters is gold/and she's buying a stairway to heaven," and then it will revert back to your original clip for the remainder of the song (unless you paste over more close-ups at other points.
Since you are are mixing footage from 2 camera of the same song, it should be really easy to match up the video footage based on the audio.
I know this was windy, I hope it helps. In the meantime, I will look for some online tutorials, etc.

  • How can I REALLY downgrade my iCloud storage?  HELP!

How can I REALLY downgrade my iCloud storage?  Apple is trying to scam ppl out of $$. They will NOT allow you to downgrade per their instructions.  It ALWAYS says the iCloud manager is not available, try later.  Here is what my email says:
This is a reminder that on 03/03/2015 you will be charged $10.99 for your 20 GB storage plan using your Visa •••• (deleted). If you do not wish to be charged, you can cancel by downgrading to the free storage plan from your iOS device, Mac or PC.
    The iCloud Team
I'm so disappointed that all my products are currently Apple and now I down't trust them as far as I can throw them.  There is already a class action suit in Florida for the icon taking up 23% of users' available space, now they are trying to charge me $$ yearly when I do NOT need the space?  Shame, Apple.. Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave about your unethical business practices... This does NOT work:
You can also cancel or downgrade your storage plan at any time. For a full refund, contact iCloud Supportwithin 15 days of an upgrade or within 45 days after a yearly payment. Partial refunds are available where required by law. Learn more about iCloud storage plans or get help using Cloud storage.
No... the "done" button will not light up, and it says the iCloud manager is "not available at this time.  Try again later."  This is a known problem... fix it.
    <Edited By Host>

Thank you Roger!  Going into my iTunes at least allowed me to delete my credit card info so they can't charge it.  In the meantime, after 2 calls I finally got connected to a Senior Advisor from Apple who was able to manually go into my account and remove the automatic charge to my credit card.  After sharing my screen, she was able to see the issue many others are having being unable to downgrade.  There is a bug in the system that tells you the manage storage is "unavailable at this time".  She followed me through several of these threads and realized it is actually an issue.  She took all the relevant information and will submit a bug fix request.  She even admitted that goal and apple were having an issue syncing to the correct time zone at that there was no know fix at this time.  While frustrating, the honesty was refreshing.
Thank you SO much for you quick response on this!  My apologies for my tone; this was my first time using this forum.  I went through Apple support and didn't realize that there are no Apple employees on here.  I was on the line with someone from customer service that wasn't as helpful at the time and was very frustrated..
Thanks again for your help!  To all others having this problem, keep calling Apple tech support until you get a Senior Advisor - they will help!!  The advisor even told me to tell people to call in and that they need to manually downgrade on their end until they get this issue resolved.

  • Can I really only use a CD once?

I'm a real newbie, so bear with me.
I just copied a file to a new cd then ejected it. When I put the cd back in to copy another file I got the message "The item "contacts" could not be moved because "untitled cd" cannot be modified."
Can I really only use a 700meg cd once? Feels silly to put a 10k file on there and then nothing else.
    Thanks,
    Fred

AFAIK the finder does not support multisession burns, so you have to use 3rd party programs like Toast or Burn Again.

You will have to restore and thus erase the iPod. If you stuff is in a backup y can restore from backup. Otherwise it is lost.

    You might start with:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
If the above reveals nothing helpful, then create a new user account. Log out of your account and log into the new account. Do the problems cease?

  • Can iMovie edit 50p footage?

Okay, so i don't yet have my Mac but am getting it soon, if everything goes right. So here's my question(s).
Can imovie edit footage in 720p 50 fps I have a Canon 600D and are in a PAL region so 60fps won't do, or do i have to convert it?
Also, i know that Final Cut Pro X cannot work with the H.264 codec, so can imove or again do i have to convert?
One last question, with this brand-spanking-new 50p footage, i was planing to slow it down within iMove, but i have read somewhere that all imovie does is skip frames not double or triple the time that it is played over like most slow motions, or do i need to buy FCP X for this?
    Thanks
    The_Ele4ant

Great video btw, I still have a few questions though.
First of all how did you import and edit the 50p footage as a poster mentioned above that iMovie does not natively support 50p footage import an editing.
Finally how did you achieve such fluid slow motion, did you find a way to do 'real' slomotion as in extending the played time of footage (therefore slowing sown without skipping frames) or the meathod of just skipping frames. All using iMovie or ther free software available on a mac.
    Thanks

  • Can iMOVIE HD convert a PAL DVD to a NTSC DVD?

That was all! Can iMOVIE HD convert a PAL DVD to a NTSC DVD? That's my only question. Thanks.

    Hi
    A. Commersial DVDs - No Not at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (without copy protection)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL-DVD players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC-DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to conver the PAL DVD to streaming.DV
    • I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
    • MPEG Streamclip (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)

  • New User question re BlackBerry Link and Z10 -- can you really reach the computer from the Z10 remotely - how remote?

I am slowly getting there re use and exploring this and that.  Now, I want to know can I really reach my laptop which has BlackBerry Link on it, and my Z10 has all been set up to it, etc., remotely?  I know it can within the same household network, but what about from another network?  Surely it can't do that.  Sorry about the dumb question.
I have unclicked  the connection for the time being as I don't want to lose the phone and have someone grabbing my computer stuff!

    Hi janetnewuser,
Any BlackBerry smartphone accessing your computer would be required to be using the same BlackBerry ID you are signed into BlackBerry Link with. You can access files over any Wi-Fi or the mobile network. Your PC must be powered on with BlackBerry Link running for you to access files on it.
This article should provide more information on the security of this feature. "About the security for the BlackBerry Remote File Access feature in BlackBerry Link" http://blackberry.com/btsc/KB34573

  • Say the new iPhone 5 came out this summer/ fall, can I really turn in my iPhone 4S with $100 to get the iPhone 5 even though my contracts not up yet?

Someone told me that if a new iPhone comes out less than a year after I bought my iPhone 4S, I can get the new one for $100 + my old iPhone. I bought my iPhone 4S in December of 2011, so if the new iPhone comes out, can I really get it for $100?
    Thanks.

I thought vzw did that for one device but you would have to buy it right before the new one came out. Since potentialy you have bought the iPhone 4s almost year by the time it Comes out probably not. I don't think they would. Maybe it was the iPad somepeople bought the original and then the 2 came out right afterword so they let them get $100 towards the newer one.
If you upgrade there will be a $30 fee too starting April 22. Is it worth not waiting? because if you don't have another upgrade you would be paying full retail to me that's a lot and you would be about 10 months away from upgrading. For me i think pros and cons. By the time you can upgrade 20 months from other purchase you will know how good it is and what the hype is, probably bill to the account will be hopefully available, and they will have more chooses at the stores. I know from expierence that when the iPhone comes out it takes while for the Verizon stores to get anything because of how popular it is. I like to go to the store to get things like this. Trying to show you the positive of haveing to wait.
