Can InDesign take advantage of quad core processors?

I've been having trouble importing a large excel table in InDesign CS3 on windows 7,  and found that indesign was only using 1 of the 4 cores of my processor, maxing it out and crashing because of it.  So my question is, is there a way to make CS3 use all 4 cores, or failing this, does InDesign CS6 use quad cores?
Thanks for any help on this.

I installed InDesign CS6 trial, but this problem still persists.  I import the file (about a 14000 line excel table, with formatting (this is required for what I'm doing)), but it only uses 1 core of the processor. Only 25% of what it could be using to do this.  Photoshop cs3,4,5,6 use all quad cores and flys!
Anyone know how I can get this to work please?  I'll try anything that might help.
ps I can't import without formating as I need some items to be styled so I can do a find and replace on them, to add indexing elements later.

  • Does iMovie take advantage of quad core processing?

actual version of iLife is single-core only.

  • Can FCE take advantage of 4 cores?

I was wondering if Fce can take advantage of the 4 cores that the mac pro offers. If not, can it at least use 2? If so, can you use the remaining cores to do other tasks without affecting FCE? (Garageband, ect). Any advice would be appriciated. Would one reccomend using a mac pro for heavy FCE and livetpe rendering work as well as heavy idvd work (also, can idvd use multiple cores for proccessing data)?

IMHO if your processing needs drive you to Final Cut on a Quad Core MacPro, you should be looking at Final Cut Studio, not Final Cut Express.
That said, OSX including Tiger has always provided full symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support and also handles assignment & management of multithreaded tasks to the processors. In the majority of applications users do not have the option of assigning specific tasks to specific processors.
You can look at Apple's performance comparisons for FCP and quite a few other apps on quad MacPros vs. quad G5's. But don't get carried away by the numbers, remember that these comparisons were done in laboratory conditions. For what it's worth, an advertised 30% or even 50% increase in processing power doesn't impress me, between those being optimized comparisons and the reality that all sorts of factors (memory, for one) can eliminate the advantages of more or faster processors.
I'd suggest you look at it this way - a quad core machine gives you much more computing power than a dual or single core machine; and that aggregate computing power is available to all the applications you run on it.

  • Does LR take advantage of multi-core processors?

    Nick

    Eric,
Conventional wisdom says you would see some improvement. My experience says that you would get more performance from a faster processor if it was a Core 2 Duo 6600 or better. Then the extra RAM would come into its own. There are lots of things you can do to improve where you are and they should carry over into a new computer. Like:
1 Compact the LR database using this tool. Don't forget to backup
    first.
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/sqlitebrowser/
    2. Get more RAM, about 2 GB should do.
    3. Get a second HD if you only have one.
    4. Put a second pagefile on the second HD, leaving one on the C:
    drive.
    5. Set all of the pagefiles to 1.5xRAM size. Both MIN and MAX values.
    6. Optimize for apps not system cache.
    7. Make sure any antivirus does not scan the LR files when they
are accessed or when starting up.
    8. If you don't process large volumes of photos frequently, turn
off the Render 1.1 previews at Import.
    9. Make sure you are running XP SR2. [sort of a given]
    10. Get the pagefile defrag s/w from MS here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/PageDefrag.mspx
No guarantees though. These helped me. I have a Core 2 Duo 6600 with 2GB Ram.

  • I have a HP Pavilion p6710f with an AMD Athlon Quad-Core processor takes 10 to 12 minutes to boot

I have a refurbished HP Pavilion p6710f desktop, with an AMD Quad-Core processor.  About 4 weeks aog I reformated the HD and reinstalled Windows 7 Prof and the rest o my software and it ran fine for about 2 weeks then it started taking 5 to 10 minutes to boot up in morning or to restart.  I had downloaded a couple of things and I uninstalled them and it did better, but gradually over the last week it has started taking 10 to 15 minutes to boot up or restart.  With either it takes a few seconds to get the HP stuff in the middle of the monitor, then in a few seconds it loads the choices (Function keys for setup, recover, etc.) then it takes 4 to five minutes to show "windows loading" the 3 to 4 minutes to show the 4-colored windows logo and then up to 5 minutes to load my icons and be ready to run--once all this is done everything runs fine until I need to restart, and then it is 10 to 15 minutes again to get up and running.
When I redid everything about 4 weeks ago I made an image on an external 1 Tb HD that is always connected thru a UBB Port and this morning I recovered and It reinstalled it, but it did not help.
Don't think it is the BIOS battery as it doesn't lose time.
    Hope someone can help me

  • Does Firefox 13 run in a multi-threaded mode and can it utilize quad-core processors?

When purchasing a new PC, one chooses between dual-core vs. quad-core processors and some people claim that Firefox run in a mulch-threaded mode and treats each tab as a separate process and that it can fully utilize the advantage of a quad-core processor. Is that true?

Firefox doesn't treat each tab as a separate process. While this may be a feature sometime in the future, I don't know of any plans to introduce it anytime soon. Obviously, buying a quad core processor is going to be significantly faster than a dual-core, and your browser is usually less resource intensive than many other programs. I wouldn't use it as your purchasing decision. Firefox will run equally well on a dual-core or a quad-core, but windows and other programs will run better with 4 cores.

  • Can i install quad core processor on Macbook Pro 13"

    appreciate any feedback

Notebook CPUs are not user-upgradeable. They are soldered to the motherboard, not socketed. Furthermore, the firmware is not written to support a quad-core processor.
It would be less costly to sell your computer and buy a newer one with a quad-core processor. The new 15" Retina models both have quad-core processors.

  • Quad-Core Processor useful for Lightroom?

    Hi
I need to upgrade my PC in a couple of months time and I was wondering if there is any merit in going for an Intel quad core processor. Intel are reportedly almost halving the price of the Q6600 to $266 on the 22nd of July.
Does anyone know if Lightroom can take advantage of all 4 cores? Or, am I better off getting a faster Dual Core processor for the same price?
    Regards, Nigel

I see that Jeff Schewe mentioned that he was getting a 2xQuad Core (Octa Core?) machine so there must be some benefit in more than 2 cores.

Quad cores are the new benchline, even the new iPad has a quad core processor.
If you can take care of your machine and make it last for 4 years, want to play 3D games, then the 15"
If your not going ot play 3D games and will replace the machine in 2 years, light uses, then the 13"
If your rough on computers then buy a $400 Windows 7 PC instead

I have tried with on a new, blank file, with just a few lines on it, but, as soon as I place the first pin, the image disappears, and then, as soon as I click anywhere else in the image, Photoshop crashes. I have followed all the online advice about settings under the Preferences/Performance interface, but nothing fixes the problem. Can anyone please help?

  • Oracle Licensing for a server with Quad Core Processor

I know Oracle Standard Edition ONE is only licensed to install on a server with a max of 2 processors.

Therefore you MUST get the final answer from someone with authority to speak on behalf of Oracle - and that is a Sales Rep.
However, in the mean time, you can read http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/pricing/sig-070616.pdf .
SPECIFICALLY LOOK AT PAGE 15. Many people (including some in this thread) are totaly wrong about how Standard Edition is licensed.
