Can InfoPath data connections refer to lists on other farms?

A question has arisen regarding whether SP 2010 hosted InfoPath applications are able to access sharepoint lists on other farms.
For example, on the production farm we have SharePoint custom lists of authority data for approval chains, etc.
Trying to create mirror copies of these lists on the dev farm and qa farm is time consuming, and of course having to change the many data connections each time an InfoPath form is ready to be published to the new farm is a step ripe for error.
Since the majority of development changes do not touch the schema or contents of these lists, the developers believe that it would be idea to just point their dev and qa published applications to the production lists, so that no changes will be necessary.
There is, however, some concern that SP 2010 or InfoPath 2010 will just generate errors if this is done.

I would say performing a granular backup and restore of that specific list is a safe method. here is a good resource for that
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/russmax/archive/2009/10/21/sharepoint-2010-granular-backup-restore-part-1.aspx
Another method is saving the list as a template and importing the template to QA & Dev. Your method might also work, consuming a list through data connection to another list as long as configuration is right.
Hope this helps

  • Permissions Issue with Infopath Data Connection

I'm not really sure how else to title this....
Issue - InfoPath Form on SharePoint 2010 gives 'You do not have permissions to access a SharePoint list that contains data required for this form to function correctly."
    It gives a correlation ID
    Log file shows
"Exception Message: The form cannot run the specified query. The list could not be found."
Note the look-up is to a SharePoint list on the same content database.
We have two Web-Front End servers with a load balancer.  We've had a number of other permissions type issues when the 'token' gets switched from one server to another, so we have the HOSTs file on each server pointing back to itself, so that once a
server is 'grabbed' it stays on the same one.
The error we are having currently, only seems to be occurring on the first Web Front End Server.
Also we have sharepoint setup with an address of
http://sharepoint.domain.com as well as an alias. http://sharepoint.
The error we are having currently, only occurs if I use the fully qualified domain
" http://sharepoint.domain.com" on the InfoPath data connection.  If I use the shortened alias, the error does not occur.  That is the current/easy solution, but I would like
to fix it 'correctly' if possible.
So, it appears to me that only on one of the Web Front End servers, it isn't liking the fully qualified path when doing a data connection.

    Hi Support,
In my Project we are trying to migrate sharepoint 2007 Infopaths to sharepoint 2013 Infopaths(there are some 20000 infopaths). Here we want to change the Data Connection from old to new connection.
So please let me know if there is any tool to migrate sharepoint 2007 infopaths data connection to sharepoint 2013 infopaths data connection.
Thank You in Advance for your help.

    Hi Pradeep,
As far as I could search, there is no built-in feature to batch updating InfoPath forms, I’d suggest you consider script or third party tool. Here are the links that might help:

  • Excel 2013 data connection to SharePoint list - charts won't update unless i manually refresh

I have a list called 'donations', and a connected workbook stored in an SP Document Library. On my sitepages homepage, I put an excel web part connected to a chart called "Total Donations".
I'm storing the Data Connection file on a Windows shared drive and I've given my Excel service account R/O to that drive. I'm using the Secure Store Service for my data connection, and it's refreshing data (but only when I open the Excel document).
I think this is because I've set the data connection properties to 'Enable background refresh', and 'Refresh data connection when opening', and 'refresh this connection on Refresh all'.
When I do a refresh from the web part on the home page, nothing updates :(  Anyone want to point me in the right direction?  I was going down the rabbit hole on PowerPivot services (thinking cannon to kill a fly), but couldn't find anything relating
    to this particular use case.
    P.S. I don't want to use the 2010 Chart Part because it's a POS.
Anyway, any direction would be helpful.  Thanks.

  • How can I re-connect rendered files at the other FCP and different drives

    Hello all.
Does anyone know how to re-connect rendered files in another work station.
This is feature film and we need to render effects before playback. It seems to take so long time.
We have really unconventional setting. We use 2 FCP stations and separated media drives.
Our resolution is AppleProRes 444 23.97P 1920x1080 which is very high res for just off-line editing.
I was wondering if I can create new project which has just the sequence
and render at the one station. Then copy rendered files to the other FCP station. I tried, but when the FCP asks for "reconnect" they can seem to do it. - we cannot output DVD at my station and the editor wants to keep working till just before the output.
Exporting QT is another way to make DVD, but it takes 7 hrs vs. 1.5 hrs length film and we cannot have time to do it .
If anyone knows the tips, please let me know. Thank you

FWIW, FCP often doesn't reconnect render files very well. It's usually best just the re-render.

I need help retrieving my ITunes the way it was before my computer was restored and upgraded.

This is why it has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Certainly you did nhot restore your computer without making sure your backup copy was up to date.

  • Disable/Hide Data connection error pop ups in InfoPath 2010

    Hi All ,
I am trying to hide/Disable Error Messages Shown by data connection error. I do not want user to see the error , rather I would check through rules and query the Data source again.
Is this scenario possible at all.
For ex: I have a data connection to user profile server , if it gives and error on form load , I do not want to see the error popup instead i will query the data connection again.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Nandini

    Hello,
what would you expect to change between the first call to the data connection and the second call?
How would you "check through rules"?
I don't think the error message can be suppressed. If you don't want to query the data connection on form load, untick the box in the data connection settings.

  • Additional data connections not supported.

    Hello,
I am currently using SharePoint 2013 and InfoPath 2013.
I want to create a drop down list in InfoPath that points to external data content (in this case a lookup table in SQL server).
The process works in the InfoPath "preview" mode, but when I go to publish it to my SharePoint website, I get the following error:
    "Additional data connections not supported."
I've also tried deploying the data source to my InfoPath Connection library on the SharePoint website and pointing it to that, but to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
One further thing to note is that I am limited to a non-HTML5 web brower so I can't use Light Switch.
    Kind regards,
    Joshua

    Hi Joshua,
Based on my research, we cannot add data connections to External List forms. They are not supported just like the error says. It's a limitation of InfoPath and there is no workaround for this issue so far.

  • How to submit InfoPath form data to multiple SharePoint lists at one time?

    Hi,
I'm looking for a way to submit certain data in InfoPath form to separate SharePoint lists at the same time. I have a form that has two views with many data in them. I want to keep these data in separate SharePoint list besides keeping them in the XML. I know that you can submit to a form library using SharePoint document library data connection, but I'm not sure if you can use several data connections for submitting data to multiple SharePoint lists. Is it only possible to do using code? If yes, can anyone show a sample. I have never coded in InfoPath, though I used C# a lot in .Net.
    Thank you!Regards,
    R.D.M.

This is an old thread but I tripped over a codeless method to do this with OOB InfoPath 2010 and SP 2010.
Assuming your main InfoPath form is published to a document library with the promoted fields that you want to see.
Publish your form to a new document library to capture the secondary data fields that you want separated out.
Using the Publishing Wizard do the following:
Go to – File then Publish
Select SharePoint Server “ Publish form to a SharePoint Library”
Enter location of your SharePoint or InfoPath Forms Services Site:
accept the default in this field from the first published event
Next screen, keep the default or change it, Form Library, Site Content Type or Admin Approved
Next screen, What do you want to do?
    Create a new form library
Add new document library name and description
Next screen, Remove all promoted fields not applicable to the new library and add all of the ones you want to see data for.
    Click Next and Publish
Come back into the form: If you don’t have buttons added directly to the form to submit or update, add them.
Create a new Action rule on the button
Label the rule to keep it straight
    Condition, occurs when button clicked
    Add action, Submit data
Use data connection to the second library created
Create a second new Action rule on the same button
Label the rule to keep it straight
    Condition, occurs when button clicked
    Add action, Submit data
Use original data connection to the library
Then you can add another action to close the form or do whatever you need.
Republish the form to both libraries to set the template for both.
File – Publish – SharePoint Server
Select Secondary library from drop down follow the rest of the prompts
Follow step 5a again, select Primary library from drop down, Add back in all of the promoted fields needed for the primary library and follow the prompts.
DOCUMENT YOUR FORM WELL FOR MAINTENANCE
Special considerations, your primary library needs a unique ID to reference in your secondary library.
Your secondary library will need a unique ID that is not related to the primary if you are going to store multiple records for a single primary library reference.
    Example: One form, multiple updates.

  • Cannot modify Data Connection in Infopath form as the original webservice server no longer exists

    Hi,
I am going to modify one of the data connections in my infopath form, but it throws me an error. The original server no longer exists. I know that I can change the manifest.xsf and replace the old server with the new server name. And when I pulled up the
Data Connections list, I can see all the connection sources have been changed to the new server. But  I am still getting this error:
    Could not open "http://<oldeserver>/<webservices.asmx>?WSLD
I don't seems to see a reference to the webservices.asmx, where will that be?
Please advice. Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Where is this reference came from?

I think I found out where the reference is, it is actually in the udcx file. It is weird though, the one on Central admin has been updated with the new server name, but not the one in the local data connection library, and it is actually referencing the
local data connection library instead of the one in Central Admin.
    Thanks.

  • Create a Report with InfoPath to Show Only Some of Data in a Custom List

I have to create a report using InfoPath from a SharePoint 2010 custom list.
The report has 8 columns, and there will be four repeating? tables in it, each table including data that is filtered from the bigger list to meet two criteria.  All the items in all four repeating tables will meet one of the criteria (Type of Task field
= Human Capital) and each of the other four repeating tables will be different depending on the contents of the Personnel Action Location field.  Neither Type of Task or Personnel Action Location will be columns in the repeating tables.
How can I filter data from a custom list as it goes into a form?
Can I do this on fields that don't otherwise appear in the form?
If I can just figure out how do to one form, we can do many, many more, and finally really move over to SharePoint, but I just need to get the first one figured out please.  Thanks!

    Hi,
If you would like to connect data to InfoPath form from SharePoint list, you could make use of Data Connection. You could locate it via InfoPath form > Data ribbon > Get External Data > From SharePoint List.
And here are the links to use it for your reference:

  • How to move data connections with SOAP web service in different environments in InfoPath Forms 2010

    Hello,
I've an InfoPath Form where I've around 10 SOAP web service data connections. They are calling a custom web service for a custom business process. The web service URL has a query string parameter which identifies whether it's a Test web service or the Production
one. The web service URL looks like this:
    http://server/webservice/wsdl?targetURI=testSPRead (for the Test environment)
    http://server/webservice/wsdl?targetURI=ProdSPRead (for the Production environment)
When I develop the form in Dev environment, I use the Test web service URL and save the data connection as UDCX files in the data connection library. After completing the development, when I deploy this Form in Production, I update the URL in the UDCX
file in the Production data connection library, but when I run the Form in Production, it throws error 'Error occurred in calling the web service'. After doing more research, when I extracted the XSN file and opened Manifest.xsf file in Notepad, I found the
    references of 'testSPRead' parameter.
So, in the UDCX file the web service URL is '/targetURI=ProdSPRead' but in the Manifest.xsf file, there is a reference of Test web service parameter which is 'testSPRead' and that's why it's throwing error.
For testing purpose, I updated the Manifest.xsf file and replaced all the occurrences of 'testSPRead' to 'ProdSPRead' and also updated all the relevant files of the data connections (like XML, XSF etc.) and saved the Manifest.xsf as Form.xsn and deployed
    in Prod and it worked.
The question is - is this the right way of doing it? There should be a simple method in such cases where web service has conditional parameter to identify the Test and Production web service.
Does somebody know what is the right way of doing it? I also thought of adding 'double' data connections - one set of Test and another set of Production and call them by identifying the current SharePointServerRootURL, but that's a lot of work. I've 10 web
service data connections in my Form and in that case I'll be having 20 data connections and setting their parameters in different Rules is too much work.
Please advise. It's very important for me!
    Thanks in advance.
    Ashish

    Thanks for your response Hemendra!
I hope Microsoft improves this thing in subsequent patches of InfoPath 2010 or InfoPath 2013 because I don't think this is a very special requirement. This is failing the purpose of having UDCX files for data connections. Why the WSDL's parameter value
is being written in the Manifest.xsf and other XSF and XML files. InfoPath should always refer the URL and parameters from the UDCX files.
